Even though I had a bad feeling after reading the reviews especially about microtransactions, after playing the game for about a week or more i can tell that the game is wonderful, and there is no need to worry about the microtransactions if you are willing to play the game for enjoyment and not for finishing it as early as possible. I would like to give it a score of 9

The Game is Awesome! Just fantastic. Criticisms of microtransactions are not understood because they do not influence the main game.In both playable and graphic, history, duration, everything is perfect. One of the best games I've played in years, I'm in love with the nemesis system

*****This game no longer has microtransactions, which I believe was a huge issue many players had well before I picked this up.****

    PROS
+ Very interesting and engaging story
    + Great voiceovers
    + Fun missions
+ Fast paced, somewhat smooth and fun combat with many different ways to kill and damage enemies
+ The Nemesis system is much the same as in SoM but with more creative ways to manipulate Orcs
+ Genuinely funny dialogue from Orc captains

    CONS
    - The controls are quite honestly the worst I've ever suffered through. I'm not exaggerating. I played Brutal, which is the hardest difficulty, and while challenging, the most difficult part of the game was actually the parkour, especially trying to climb a monument to destroy it. It is incredibly sticky, nonresponsive, and unintuitive. You will climb onto the wrong ledge multiple times, either placing you right in front of an Orc you were trying to avoid or placing you in Orcs' sights while you're trying to evade archers.
    - If you dominate an Orc and move away from him, he'll revert back to hostile. This runs contrary to the idea you're creating an Orc army and doing so is a core mechanic of the game. If I wanted to dominate all archers in a fortress before attacking to give myself an advantage, I should be able to do that. Unfortunately, you can't.

I can understand the frustration with microtransactions in the early release of this game. I, however, got it on sale after the microtransactions were removed so I've only played this game is it currently is, and should have been from the start.

With that said, this is the best game that i've played on PS4. It's so polished, deep, and has a ton of replay value even after you beat it.

With that said, this is the best game that i've played on PS4. It's so polished, deep, and has a ton of replay value even after you beat it. The story mode of the game from what I remember (it's been a while since I beat it) was ok, but just doing the online fortress raids and continuing to strengthen my own armies is where I'm enjoying this game the most.

The depth of character and ability customization available in this game is impressive. So many different ways to build your character and minions, you can guarantee that your 'Bright-Lord' and his army are truly one of a kind. I played Shadow of Mordor and loved that game, and this one took the series to the next level entirely!

Shadow of War is a STEAL at the price it's going for these days, and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially fans of the Lord of the Rings movies/books.

The game takes place in a vast open world, and the graphics are breathtaking, making players feel like they're truly a part of this fantastic universe. The combat system is refined and more challenging than its predecessor, with a variety of moves and abilities that give players greater control over their characters.

The Nemesis System, which was one of the defining features of the first game, has been expanded upon, allowing players to create their own unique army of orcs to take on the enemy forces. The addition of new orcs, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, makes the gameplay even more varied and exciting.

The story is engaging and well-written, and the characters are compelling. Fans of the series will appreciate the return of fan-favorites such as Talion, Celebrimbor, and Gollum, who are all voiced by excellent voice actors.

The game also has an incredible soundtrack that complements the action on-screen perfectly. The sound design is top-notch, and the game's atmospheric score adds to the immersive experience.

Overall, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a fantastic game that improves upon the already impressive Shadow of Mordor in almost every way. It's a must-play for fans of action games, open-world titles, and the Lord of the Rings franchise. With its compelling gameplay, excellent story, and engaging characters, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a true gem that should not be missed.

The number one improvement is probably how much better the characters are (excluding Tallion, he seems to be less likeable this time) and how cool each orc is. You can ease drop on orc conversations and they are making actual small talk. Its a minor thing, but I would find myself stopping to listen to them before I'd stealth kill one of them.

I have not experienced any game breaking glitches yet, but there were minor things here and there. The worst I've had was the pre-fight speech didn't trigger once but after waiting 30 seconds or so the fight began anyway. The biggest draw back is about 75% of the way through the game I kind of stopped caring about most of the missions left since I had completely conquered each area. Other than that its a strong follow up to the previous.

Although the controversy of micro transactions (which has now been resolved by Monolith by completely removing them) a lot of fans called this game "pay-to-win". This was not completely true, you could buy micro transaction, but they were not required to win, they honestly just led to an easier way to make your orcs powerful. it was not required for anything else. Anyway, its pretty petty to whine about such things in a game where it only matters in conquests and pit battles (conquest isn't even a huge benefactor either). But that is all in the past. As for the story... it was a little less involved than in the first game but it was on the right track. I appreciate the lore characters such as Shelob being major characters, and they all played some kind of role instead of just being there for show. The twist of the story was rather disappointing in the end for me but hey, others probably enjoyed it. Overall this game is a solid 8. Expand

Played this after the microtransactions were removed and I have to say it's a pretty good game. It doesn't really improve the graphics of the previos game, which were good nonetheless, or the gameplay mechanics. It might become a little repetitive at some point, but the stpry is amazing, loved every bit of it.

    c) The inventory menu is ok. Too small and unnecessarily complicated.
    d) Control system should be better. Sometimes I want to jump off and end up grabbing every wall in town while being hit by Tark hating scum. I mean come on.
    e) The story is solid and as an avid reader of all Tolkien books, I can do not mind them branching out. Tolkien is no Jesus. Calm down. It is all for fun and doesn't affect canon.
    f) Cannot make any comment yet on MTS as I have about 7000 Miriam and I still haven't bought any loot boxes. People say it is a grind in the end. Hell, I still haven't stormed first fortress and it is already a grind and I love it. Enjoy every boring mission.

I have waited for so long for this game and I am not disappointed at all. I almost got put off by bad reviews but then I decided to make my own mind up and let's be honest, I was gonna buy it anyway. Who am I kidding? Buy and enjoy.

The game does suffer from a lack of tutorials, and only being able to equip one bonus per power at a time. However, the game still has a lot to offer, and is one of the most fun games I've ever played. Now, to address the elephant in the room, the micro-transactions don't affect the game at all. I am 10-12 hours into the game, and I have not seen a single thing promoting loot boxes. They are not necessary to play the game, and only there for people who don't want to play the game. I would argue that the loot boxes are even more prevalent in Battlefield, Overwatch, and CS:GO, but no one complains about those. This game is amazing. Definitely worth the $60, and I expect to have even more fun as the game progresses. The problems are blown out of proportion by journalists. Play this game. You'll thank me. Expand

I played the first game, Shadow of Mordor through twice 100% in less than the time i've already spent on one playthrough of Shadow of War. (EDIT: I forgot to mention that i also played all of the DLC through in that time.) And frankly, i must say that Shadow of War is better, in every way that it can be. The graphics are nice, the game runs better, there's no longer these useless or annoying sidequests, but they are replaced with actual, interesting story content. The nemesis system is better in every way, and helping your followers feels good, (even though after you've conquered all of mordor you have little connection to your followers anymore.) The game is basically just better in every way. God i loved the Nazgul fights.
But never in those over 50 hours of gameplay did i experience an impassable paywall where i either have to grind for 50 hours or pay money to get through act4. I actually spent an hour per area, hunting for good captains, assigned warchiefs and upgraded my fortresses with the money i had gathered throughout the game, (and i spent about 50 000 miriam on lootboxes just to see what i'd get at lower levels)
Having upgraded all my forts to a the fullest extent i could, in less than 5 hours of gaming i started playing the sieges. Oh damn, i just won, and they didn't even breach a wall. Damn well i guess it will get harder. But it never did, i just dominated orcs during the sieges always getting the max level guys i could. You get a level per siege so keeping up with the enemy isn't a problem.
I only lost 2 sieges and those were because of my own error, and not because of the level of my fort or my followers.
Not once in my playthrough did i face a paywall or even notice the microtransactions.
I also saw someone complaining that their followers started dying all the time, well that's because you didn't go revive them or you just generally didn't look after them. Never was a problem for me.

All in all the game was totally worth the money i spent on it, i will buy the expansions to the game, because i absolutely loved the experience. All of you who are complaining about the microtransactions or the paywall or what have you, have not played the game or suck very deeply.

This game is by far the best RPG game I have ever played in my entire life. The Witcher 3 come really close but in a different way. There is absolutely everything in this game that anybody may ever want. INSANE amount of variety in EVERYTHING!!! Nemesis system is improved tremendously after the first game! I played for about 20-30 hours before I started noticing SIMILAR (NOT THE SAME) NPCs huge depth of their characters makes you feel their uniqueness within the world, and even when I pass by regular orcs I just feel obliged to rid the world from this monsters because I feel I truly fight the dark powers and really make a difference by killing them! This is the first game ever that makes me feel that way about any regular monsters that are scattered throughout the world. The danger of any orc being able to slay you and earn the respect and promotion makes you feel cautious of your every move. The variety of the surrounding area is just stunning! every single location is the size of the whole map from the first game which is pretty impressive, considering the amount of action that is packed within. Scattered artifacts and hidden memories now MAKE SENSE! I feel the desire to find out what has happen to the world and once again I feel like I really can make the difference by submerging into the atmosphere of battle between light and dark. Skills are designed to make you think about the upgrades you should use approaching any significant battle be it an assault, ambush or anything else that leads to the weakening of the Saurons army. It will take me another review to discuss the battle system. Such a variety of moves that Talion and the orcs display just stuns me every single time I engage in mortal battle for survival. Slo-mo is absolutely incredible and is always more than appropriate! I have not experienced anything like it in any game (maybe Witcher 3is coming close to that but not quite). Animation of the characters (main and regular farming material) makes me feel like those scum is actually may be an individual with a personality. The promoted orcs are just fabulous. I can't stop admiring the quality of detail and depth of the characters. I am still amazed with the orcs chit chat right before the mo fos are about to go down. Within the battle there can be numerous moments when the tide can change and the fight balance can shift either way. Several times I was unexpectedly saved by soldiers popping out of nowhere giving me a chance to survive. Just as many times I was about to slay another green beef cake as suddenly I was tackled by some giant in an ambush attempt. The variety of approaches you can take is just mind boggling to me. Loot system is not excellent but is an improvement still. Now there is at least a reason for you to "farm" the orc, although coming back to a variety of the enemies, it does not feel completely like farming, since I feel every enemy is unique and worth my time slaying the bastard. And I think the last but not least, the graphics. Stunning. The level of detail is exceptional, colors are beautiful and the textures and attention to the world is awesome! Finally, microtransactions. If you are one of those people who complete the game on easy difficulty, keep buying the chests. For those who are broke and can't afford it - beat it. You don't have to buy it. It doesn't affect you if someone buys a loot box, so wtf would you complain about someone playing the game with a little help? it's their own story! I would understand if it was an MMO and you were busted by jerks who buy 100 boxes and farm you every time. Expand

Yes loot boxes are a thing in this game but contrast to what all the salty reviewers looking to give this game a bad name for being greedy say, the loot boxes are a big issue, and aren't needed to experience the game as a whole. Onto the gameplay: the gameplay in Shadow Of War is rather rewarding to play, and defeating orcs has been refined since the first title. it may become a little repetitive after awhile, however for someone who is looking to enjoy the game (and not trying to savagely gut it for being a micro transaction game) it is easy to overlook. As a fan of the Middle Earth universe, the most offensive thing about the game is the story. it breaks the lore in every which way and has no respect for how rings function in this world. I won't go into more detail, lest I spoil anything. Finally, I'd like to briefly talk about the graphics. The graphics of shadow of war are stunning and are a massive improvement over the first title. Even if the occasional orcs body glitches, the graphics are still amazing and the glitches are minor.

Overall a very enjoyable experience thus far. If i had one recommendation to you it would be to ignore the salty reviewers who are only here to tear apart the game for having micro transactions and see what fun and beauty the game has to offer.

I, for one, don't forget those days in the 80s and 90s where - if we wanted a true AAA experience - we had to insert 25 cents or 50 cents into an arcade machine to play a game that doesn't even come CLOSE to the experiences we get in today's age from the comfort of our couch in our living rooms on our very own console. We're lucky, indeed! Hopefully, Metacritic will delete these erroneous reviews. Expand

If you enjoyed the first game, then this one is much like it just more options. More skills, better loot system, more orc varieties, an enjoyable story line so far, and just all around fun. You can also set difficulty this time. Bottom line is just buy the game and avoid the microtransactions if you hate them.

I don't understand people crying about micro-transactions... You can easily finish the game without using it !! It is just a possibility if you want more epic and legendary orcs etc, but really not an obligation at any time!!
It is definitely a great game let's be honest!!

Its literally "pay and go to the next chapter, pay to get the weapon that does 5444 damage vs the sword you get in the game that does 77 damage." Those are extremes that "Shadow of War" doesn't go to. Mobile apps also rely heavily on what is referred to as a "whale". The 5% of the people who get the game for free who encompass more than half of the overall profit of. Nobody aims a gun to their head to make them pay.

If you owned a company and could make a profit doing this, you would all do it. If you have willpower to play the game and not even look at the micro-transactions (buy the stuff with in game currency or actually earn your loot) then it would be a pleasant experience. It is NOT grindy in my opinion because it is fun to use some strategy and kill/capture the harder orcs. Also, you do not need to pay to beat the game, you do not hit a steep wall that you cannot get past unless you pay, you can enjoy it regardless. You guys are so annoying, giving this game 0/10's when it is actually an extremely fun game with plenty of things to do.

I am willing to bet that most of you just trash the game, but then run straight to the store and buy it/enjoy it. You just want to complain for the sake of complaining. Play the game or don't review it.

People whining and wetting themselves over the loot feature havent even played the fantastic story mode. Buy this game and appreciate it for what it is, one of the most fun adventures (and best looking) around. Warning though! The AI, aka Nemesis System, is scary good.

I did the daily quests and earned enough online currency to buy the two starter loot boxes (Act 1 and Act 2) about 1300 coins. I received over 20 orcs, 8 xp boosts, and a handful of in game currency boosts. I used my XP boosts while I was playing the numerous main and side quests. Doing this I was able to skyrocket to level 60 and never feel like I was grinding, sometimes gaining two or three levels at once. Be careful though because they only last for two hours of real time, so make sure you use that time wisely. The only "grind" part was getting my orcs at a higher for the Stage Defenses of my Fortresses. This did take me about 5 hours to get all my fortresses leveled to my level. But, since then I haven't purposefully leveled a single orc, at worst during my siege defenses, I capture more powerful orcs and put them in place of the weaker ones. With all that said, the facial graphics during game play is the reason I gave this a 9. As for all the complaints about the loot boxes, I did not pay for a single one and am still having a great time. Expand

Shadow of War the sequel to the epic game called Shadow of Mordor is a great game, and I haven't been able to put the controller away since purchasing it.

This game is fun, but even I was skeptic towards buying the game seeing how a lot of talks were going around how the game is pay to win because of the loot boxes. That does not seem to be the case at the end of the day one can play this game without loot boxes and enjoy it thoroughly, but purchasing them does make it easier to progress throughout the game.

The game itself has an fantastic nemesis system that makes the game feel alive. As you are progressing through the story itself, it feels like you are creating your own story by killing orcs or making them follow you as one of your companions. They really developed the nemesis system into something great seeing how orcs that worked with you helped you capture a fortress might one day turn on you and conquer everything you worked so hard to get.

The combat system is flawless, its pretty much the same as the previous game with a few new niches to it to make it a little bit better. Plus the new RPG elements of upgrading your hero is more in-depth and lets you form Talion and Celebrimbor into the hero of Mordor you want to be.

The scenery is impressive, the regions are all beautiful and different, but sadly the gameplay is pretty much the same in every area except that some areas got one type of enemies with some power that isn't as usual in another province.

I don't want to put the focus on microtransactions, they are there, and I don't like them, but I won't let them ruin my gaming experience, and I won't let them keep me away from playing a great game. If you ignore them and don't purchase them then maybe the gaming companies will stop putting them in the games, you might even boycott the game overall to make a statement towards the company group if you want to do that go for it.

Either way, the game is much better than the first one and would probably get amazing reviews if it wasn't for the microtransactions being in there. It isn't something groundbreaking, but they took a working recipe from the first game and upgraded it into a worthy sequel.

If you like what I read make sure to take a look at my blog for more reviews like this, just google therealzadeh and you will find it.

I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.

Big, brutal, and - alas - bloated, Shadow of War is a disappointing follow-up, conjuring battles of grand scale and then deadening their impact through grinding repetition. [December 2017, p.79]
