    Shadow of Mordor on steroids.

    Great game; these review bombing people haven't even touched the game which shows how immature the gaming community truly has become.

    Get it, worth a buy at full price. Don't buy the MTX's if you don't want to as they are NOT needed.

    Guys i got this game 2 days ago and i found it great in every aspect so why zero everything improved i love the story . I love to be like a commander as commander Shepherd in mass effect and guide my army it feels good . maybe some fighting mechanic in the first chapter was better but it is great as a final

    9 of 10, why? 60+ hours of great gameplay - that's why! Seriously, I'm Tolkien fan, not so many thing in game lore arrange me, but storyline forged amazingly!

    Shadow of War is an exciting and engaging sequel to the masterpiece that was the original. It expands the world and improves on the nemesis system.

    The game is an ok improvement from the previous version. Most annoying thing in battle is to find an orc to drain or look for that damn elf shot.
    The Nemesis-system is not as amazing as they made it look. You cannot make friends with the orcs or make a choice between saving a follower or killing your nemesis, as was advertised.

    Best 2017 open world action adventure game! Best story , best offline mode (i love story offline mode) best upgrading system , best graphic and best environment. If you love lord of rongs , you love Middle -Earth and you should buy this game! ❤

    Shut up and play the game before you give it a **** review. The microtransactions only helps you finnish the game earlier. The end game is not locked behind a paywall and the loot boxes you can get just by actually playing the game. The game doesn't even pressure you into buying any. Need gear? Kill some captains or do some vendetta andDon't listen to the people giving this a 1-5 or around that. I guarantee they they didn't even play the game. Microtransaction system is Unobtrusive, u can finish game easily without even opening "shop" window.     I am not in habbit of writting long reviews but I just mention few points below.
    - The game is worth playing at least this year's best game and surely proved that as well in terms of all aspects, graphics ,story and gameplay.

Well, I can say this much - I got so much Mirian already early on, that I could easily spend a whole lot of it, and yet never feeling poor - cause like in other game’s with systems like this, the paid storefront here, feels less predatory and actually more like an unnecessary addition. The only difference (as I see it) is that the better and expensive chests just hands guaranteed better loot, but I personally rather get that in-game anyway.

    The GFX is gorgeous and the enviroments is stunning, as is the details on the Orc Generals/Officers, armor and weapons. The Nemesis system feels both familiar and improved since the first. The Skill-tree has some nice and awesomely helpful abilities, while others just feel "MEHH!!". Still there is variety enough that early on they matters, but later on you'll most likely have covered them all. Even though the Armor & Weapons looks neat and cool, but their abilities doesnt hand the same variety and awesomeness, also it becomes a tedious task to always be in need to un-lock their bonus abilities as soon as you get a better piece.

    The story is not all that compelling, but it doesn't bother me all that much since there is so many other things to do (some of the stuffs can after a while feel bit repetative). At its core it is a great experience, and for me personally, this game is a brilliant game that gives me more flesh and insight to one of the many untold stories in Middle Earth.    … Expand

    The gameplay and animations feel so much more fluid than Shadow of Mordor. Don't get me wrong, SOM had incredible gameplay, but it always felt like it was lacking in variety, with only a couple different animations for each combo. SOW has outdone itself in terms of gameplay mechanics.
    Also, when you think of games like Destiny (for comparison, no bias), the sequel was very good in its own right, but it wasn't that much of an improvement from the first game. Shadow of War, however, has absolutely smashed this sequel out of the park. The map is massive, with the in-menu world map being 3D rendered. New mechanics, combat moves, Uruk variation, enemy types and environment settings. It has a much more flushed out nemesis system, and RPG elements never before seen in SOM. The progression feels perfectly paced, with the story starting a little while after the events of SOM.
    As for the story, I cannot say, as I have not played anywhere near enough of it. But just from the opening few missions, I can already say that it is going to be one to remember.
    In terms of accuracy in the LOTR universe, the names of places, the placement and map generation, and even time- they're all perfectly flushed out and thought about carefully. As a massive LOTR fan, I am not disappointed by how they have portrayed the game.
    In conclusion, this game has definitely been worth my money and time, and I cannot wait to play more of it. WB and Monolith have not failed to impress, as always.    … Expand

    This is a great game, all the loot box whiners haven't got a clue. Play the game, play the quests, follow the story and side quests and there isn't much to complain about. Its no 10/10 but it is overall pretty good.

    Loot boxes are pretty fail, but not necessary. As usual, they are for the lazy gamer, just like all the garbage reviews.

    Now that that is out of the way: I **** love this game already. I've defeated a **** ton of captains already and each and every one was unique and fun to fight against, required different tactics, and had different personalities.

    The combat is pretty much the same as the first game, but that's a very good thing here. The first game had amazing combat and this is no different. Its very similar to games like Assassins Creed or Batman: Arkham Asylum. One thing I love that Monolith has added to the game is dismembering enemies. It happens at random but man does it look cool when it happens.

    I like all the RPG elements that were added also. Captains, and warchiefs now drop loot that you can add to Talion to customize him as you see fit. They are also able to be broken down into Mirian, the games in game currency to buy things like gem slots for your gear.

    I haven't made it out of the first area yet, but that's because it is just jam packed with things to do and also because i want to level up my character so he isn't underpowered later on in the game. One of such things is clearing out all of the captains from the army screen. I like to think of it as sowing chaos among the ranks of Orcs, because whats an army without its captains?

    All in all, I am having a fantastic time with this game. I'll be giving an update later in the game though to see if my feelings changed.    … Expand

All of them are people complaining about microtransactions, without even playing the actual game and reviewing it based on what it's worth.     Having played nearly 15 hours of the game already, I've been having a blast. I was a big fan of the original, and this game was an on-the-fence buy for me due to time, but honestly, do not regret buying it at all. More than enough content and nowhere near the end still, also I've only explored two regions to this point, imagine all that I have left to do and explore.

    Microtransactions play such a small part in the game; you can probably get 60 hours of game time without even considering or looking at them, according to most people that have put in that amount of time since getting their early copies. The only benefit you get from them is getting higher ranked orcs, which you can do in the game yourself, better-ranked gear, which you can get in the game, and some XP/loot bonuses, which you can't get in the game, but don't make it that game breaking.

    The gameplay has been thoughtfully tweaked from the first game, based on player feedback over the past years, making the combat system more fluid and diverse. You can have different combat styles now, ranging from assassin to warrior to archer to a mix of all three and more. (personal favorite is Mount Rider, love my Caragors) All skills benefit from so many new additions or tweaks that it plays like the previous iteration while bringing in a whole new truckload of options. (i.e., Poisoning Grog Barrels from afar, then shooting them to cause an explosion, resulting in a poison-proof captain cheating death and hunting me down)

    The story is going to be either a hit or miss for some people, it is genuinely exciting and brings new lore to LoTR, people saying there is no lore or story are incredibly wrong and probably lazy enough to skip all the conversations and lore items found throughout the world. I have barely done some of the story missions and have found myself immersed in the game's story and it drives me to continue. Obviously, there are going to be sure things that don't make sense at first *cough* Shelob *cough* but give them time to explain it in the story, and it falls in place making it all the more entertaining.

    Graphics are a step up from the first game, some of the reviews on here have said they are awful and the reduced resolution. I have played both the PS4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One versions (PS4 being my main copy) and on all three consoles, it looked great, with some apparent advantages on PS4 Pro for textures and the overall fps rate. Someone on here went as far as to say the original games graphics were better, which is entirely crazy. Apparently, this user had both games playing side by side to make this comparison, because from what I've seen they are a definite improvement over the original.

    Grinding is another big thing people are complaining on. Most of these players don't care for having to grind; they are just using it to bolster further their hate of microtransactions, which once again are not necessary and you can ignore entirely. If you are playing a game in this day and age without some grinding, then I'd like to know what it is because most games (good ones at that) have grinding implemented in some way. (i.e., Borderlands, MGSV, Diablo, Overwatch, Dark Souls, Witcher, Nioh and much more) For most of the people complaining about grinding, please do understand that RPG/ARPG video games that have endgame content or open worlds aren't going to give you a never-ending story unless you plan to pay them. ("DLC! Oh no I have to spend money for more! Unthinkable!" -Most of the Negative Reviewers) Now, this is where the loot and nemesis systems and oodles of side missions come in, to give players a goal to get better loot and keep coming back to take on stronger enemies. If you don't like those systems, then you shouldn't be playing games built mainly for looting or open-world adventure, which is done exceptionally well in this game.

    See I haven't gotten to the end quite yet, but friends and professional reviewers I know have gotten to the end have not complained about a single thing, other than a lack of a stellar ending. So people complaining about all these issues are either nitpicky gamers expecting $60 to be a lifetimes worth of gaming in 2017 or plain crazy.

    Make your own opinions, buy the game and play it, because it honestly is a great game. Most people complaining about microtransactions are merely doing so because they feel compelled to buy these to compete with other players, who do this as well.

    Will be playing this for the next couple of weeks or months.

Still even if these things make me angry, it's a fact that this is a great game. If you loved the first one, you are going to love this one also.     Overall I would say this game is a real gem. If you liked the original you should play this game. If you like Lord of the Rings you should play this game. If you like Assassin's Creed or Arkham Asylum you should play this game. Basically, you should play this game.

    For anyone with a genuine interest in this game it is worth noting straight away that you do NOT need to buy micro transactions in this game. For people who play the game how its supposed to be played (not powering through it and trying to complete in 15 hours) then your character and orc army will be more than capable to get through the final few acts.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is not just the best Lord of the Rings game, it is one of the best games ever made. Easily GOTY 2017.
    It takes what made previous game, Shadow of Mordor, so great and doubles everything, at minimum. It does everything better.

    Story follows Talion (Troy Baker ) and Celebrimbor (Alistair Duncan), after the events of first game. They create new ring and aim to conquer all of Mordor. Same time, Dark Lord's forces gather all around them preparing for the final battle, that will decide the fate of whole of MIddle-Earth.

    Story is very well written and has several absolutely fantastic twist on the way to end. There are several absolutely marvelous characters and atmosphere is just what it should be.

    This is also pretty long game, but it is not too long or repetitive. Certain basic gameplay elements are there whole time. Nemesis system is the big deal and orcs come in so many diffrent shapes and skills. Combat does not get boring, it is very engaging, thanks to one of the best combat mechanics ever created. It is easy to learn but difficult to master.

    There is also so many those little things that really make this game that good. There is so many lore in there to be found. Many artifacts have story of their own and many very famous characters also have so much more story in them.
    I must say that the first time Witch-King of Angmar emerged from the shadows, was absolutely fantastic moment and boss battle is one of the best ever in so many ways. One thing I would change thou is the fact that his weapons are not that good. Sure, it is loyal to the source material, but I would have added a sword for him and made his weapon look more different from Saurons (like in the movie).

    To point out few of the worst things in game, first that comes to mind is pit fights. Those are so bad and boring. To a certain point those are not even that difficult but champion level is brutal and that is the point when you are furious when you see how incompetent those orcs are. They do not do what they are suppose to do.
    Also, micro transactions, cancer of gaming. It is there, but you do not have to use it. Sure, its makes the game easier but I managed very well without it.
    Also, there is certain community points in game, but I really do not care about those and paid little to no attention to it.

    There is so much I could comment about the game but the best way is to experience it yourself. This is masterpiece, nothing less. I got myself Gold version just to get all DLC Expansions. I am huge LotR fan and this game delivers so much.

For those who only want to kill captains and not play the game as intended this could be seen as a Pay-to-Win, but you just need to use the Free in game currency to repopulate the dead captains. Even the Legendary Loot boxes are possible if you complete the Online Revenge quests to get the higher tier currency for FREE. You could also allow yourself to be killed to quickly repopulate if you find yourself low on currency, but I've not had this problem.

    Because of my play style the games very enjoyable, and won't require any additional purchases past the original game purchase. Though I'll probably consider future DLC expansions.    … Expand

    i just completed on nemesis difficulty without ever putting any extra money into the game and the "grinding" is not necessary, playing the game normally had me at lvl 43 at the final zone where the recommended level was 40.
    The game is pretty much a copy of the previous one with many improvements. Every single upgrade you get when leveling has 3 subcategories to improve the skill. Killing captains now drops gear instead of runes (runes have been simplified and are dropped by regular orcs), 5 regions compared to the 2 of the previous game.
    The game is really fun and as a LotR fan i thoroughly enjoyed it, even if the story doesn't really follow actual LotR lore.    … Expand

    The game is amazing. Haven't touched a loot box. Have like 9000 mirian saved up. Not necessary to use. Like the first game but with cleaner gameplay. The story is fantastic. Lord of the Rings fan dream come true.

    I just finished the game and won the platinum trophy in less than 40 hours, the box system is useless and pushed to the force do not understand the complaints and criticism, I do not support it but this system is not intrusive, this is the best game in the universe of Tolkien.

    Behold! My 10/10 score has been restored! The game is better than the first, the microtransactions are in the background and not forced at you, and you certainly do not need them to beat the game. People are just following the crowd.     This game is very addictive, it builds up from its great predecessor (Shadow of Mordor) and adds a lot of content and gimmicks along, its better than the first one and it's very enjoyable, it gets old the tribe-oriented theme, maybe it gets better with the dlcs, maybe not, it's worth the full price and more if you like (maybe not if you are hardcore fan) LOTR.

The orcs in the game had far more of a personality than any humans that you would run into. It felt as though someone was holding my hand throughout the fight. Some of the fights with the orcs in the game were way harder than that. The sieges in the game were amazing to watch though. The main parts of the siege are not focused on surviving but making sure that the captains you brought with you don't die. The fights with the overlords were quite difficult and it would occasionally take me several tries to defeat them. Unlike Shadow of Mordor, the ending to this game is really cool. I did not go through with the countless siege defenses to finish the game and I may edit my review after that but the boss fights are not quick time events, the story takes a major twist, and the story somewhat fits in with the movies. Taking all this into consideration, the nemesis system is probably the best thing in the game. The story is bland up to the end but that doesn't make it a bad game. It does a good job of wrapping up the story of Talion and Celebrimbor. One thing that I want to know from the other reviews for the game is "why do you harbor such a deep hatred for the game?" I ask this because all I am seeing are people bashing the microtransactions. I do admit that I do not like them either but it does not break the game. I understand some of the reviews with like 4s and 5s saying that the story is boring or something else was wrong. But the low scores on the microtransaction alone is kind of arrogant.     I've finished the first 4 stages of the shadow wars end game (there are ten stages in total) and it's surprisingly fun. it's just siege missions (either defence or attack) which can be repetitive but at the same time the sieges are one of the best parts of the game so i'm spacing this part out and taking my time with it.
    All in all I can see why people are disappointed but this isn't andromeda, it's still a really good game which is a lot of fun. It's just also quite flawed in areas. I'd say pick it up on sale and give it a go. You'll probably enjoy it but don't buy loot boxes because they really aren't necessary. You can just recruit orcs during the siege missions of shadow wars, there's no need to buy them.    … Expand

The visual and graphics are phenomenal, beautiful, creepy, and cool especially the characters, the drakes, the caragors, the graugs, and Ghûls. I loved how real the people looked. The different areas were really real looking and looked so much like the scenery in the movies. The gameplay was remarkable especially the fighting, the drake riding, and the missions. The story and writing are terrific. I love to ride drakes and kill captains. The enemies are awesome. The voice over performances are fantastic especially the ones for Talion and Shelob. I loved all of the different weapons and the armour you can get. I love this game so much and it is a A+ game.… Expand

    WB Games did a good job with this game. The graphics are not as good as other 2017 games but I liked it anyway. The game is so much longer then the first one but it's funnier and has a lot of side stories as well. Easy platinum in my collection :)

    With the microtransactions gone the game gets put in the light it should have from the beginning. Much has happened sinne Shadow of mordor, the new Shadow of war has a bygger world, better mechanics and depper detail in combat. The voice acting is stunning as an example.

    It was a great game. It had improve almost everything from Shadow of Mordor. The game is not true to the original source (books) but it has a good history eitherway. Visual quality is not the best but it is fair when you see the big battles and the quantity of things and characters in screen to take or defend a fortress.

    This is actually a good game. I really liked the nemenis system and the story was good until the end. The end requires way to much grinding and disturbes the games pacing. Another great thing about this game is its fortress battles which require a lot of planning and preperations. Its very original. Overal I highly recommand this game.

    It's clear that WB Games was the studio behind this because there were lots of things (like loading screens and the occasional taunt screens when you die) that were pulled straight from the Batman: Arkham games (hell, some of the Uruks/Ologs look like Joker Titans). There is also a lot of familiarity between this game and its predecessor, which I don't mind because I liked the first game. Some new mechanics, like online Vendettas and fortress assaults, can be fun, but are only minor additions.

    There are lots of complaints about the microtranscations, which, frankly, I didn't even notice. Probably because I don't ever do micotransactions. In console games or in time-waster apps on my phone. That did not subtract for me.

    The combat is still pretty fluid like the Batman:Arkham games, but they pretty much literally throw 40 enemies at you at the same time, which makes aiming your "execution" maneuver at the right baddie pretty difficult at times. The "getting ambushed by a Captain" quirk is cute at first, but sometimes, you get ambushed by one guy...start fighting him, then another shows up, and another. I did think it was cool when I was ambushed by three of my own "converted" captains as part of a "Rebellion," though. Probably because I'd converted every captain on that part of the map.

    The maps are more detailed than the original - which isn't saying a lot because ME:SoM was bereft of pretty much anything resembling structures. The story tries to make sense by introducing Shelob (who looks like Kirstie Alley in her skinny Cheers days when she's not a spider) as a being looking to quell the power of Sauron. The game also throws in the fall of Minas Ithil, which apparently doesn't fit the timeline, Ringwraiths (who are bastards to fight), and traitors in all shapes and sizes.

    The power-up system is far more fun this time around and you don't get all the power-ups by halfway through the game as in ME:SoM. And, you can tailor the power-ups based on your style of play. Personally, as a fan of hide and strike (and then hide again), I had fun winning a lot of my fights by poisoning grog barrels from afar and letting the enemy take itself out.

    I suppose that's why I liked both of these games. If I was overmatched for a time, I could climb a wall or sprint out of the area and hide until I could heal and try again, maybe divide and conquer. This is a mechanic that is sorely lacking in many newer releases where you're pretty much in an arena with no way out and have to win the first time. Only in fortress raids, and in particular fortress throne rooms, is where you encounter the win-or-die...a la boss fight. (On an appropriate aside: the pit fights can be highly entertaining)

    The graug mechanics are still stiff and the drake mechanics are probably a bit worse, while the catagor mechanics probably became a little too forgiving. Still, the standard difficulty is about where it should be and there will be a few frustrating deaths, but none that will make you want to give up on the game.

    How grindy the game is is really up to you. You should be able to fly through the story pretty quickly, but the epilogue (where you have to defend all of your fortresses) DOES get grindy. You have to level up pretty high to be able to have the army of defenders you need. I tend to go around and get all the stuff in games (which helps leveling up), but I still needed a shave over 40 hours to complete the epilogue and get to Talion's ending.

    Voice acting was mostly good again, particularly the leads. The monsters seem to, again, recycle the same 8 voices...and, my God, their monologues are SUUUPER long sometimes. You might be able to finish a captain in less time than it takes him to tell you all about how he's going to feed your guts to a catagor.

    (Something that most folks won't care about but I thought was a nice touch: there is a nice tribute to a team member who passed away during production during the end credits.)    … Expand

    As someone who completed Shadow of War 100%, this is the benchmark Lord of the Ring game with a good story, unique nemesis system, personality orcs that still amaze me, wonderful soundtrack, and all of my playthroughs. I beat the game on Nemesis Difficulty (Hard Mode), and even then, I didn't buy any microtransactions because the game is built on tactic and building the army of orcs to the end.

    Shadow of Mordor is still one of the best games in the whole franchise. Shadow of War ist just as good but a bit buggy and full of micro transactions. Still enjoyed it. Overall rating: 7.6.

    I have to say being strickly and Nintendo fanboy, Sony is my 2nd choice. I dustted of my PS4 and Bought both Middle-Earth Games online and i can say " i made a very good choice" Great game, great graphics and battle system keeps me playing for hours on. Runs smooth and plays even smoother. Alot of fun here.

    I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

    A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.
