Sucker Punch did a great work. They recreated original old Japan setting pretty cool.

    The pros:
    - A serious samurai story without bells, whistles and other desperate attempts to impress people. I, also, enjoyed the dark tone of the game, keeping the comedy elements to the minimum. Not *every* story has to have the classic comic relief character.

    - Very nuanced combat system which indeed makes you feel like a legendary samurai.

    - Breathtaking open world. The art direction is phenomenal.

    - Memorable soundtrack.

    - The atmosphere of the game and the level of immersion are unparalleled.

    - (bonus) For those who grew up with Kurosawa's films and/or samurai stories, this is a game tailored specifically for you. Like, it checks *every* box on the list.

    The cons:
    - Bad AI.

    - Very basic stealth mechanics.

    - The camera.

    - The fox/bird mechanic can get irritating at times. I think it should be toned down.

All in all, this is a great game, truly. It has its flaws, but once it clicks you just don't care about them that much.

Because I'm a trophy hunter, I had to finish Maneater before starting on Ghost of Tsushima. Maneater was ok as fun. Anyway, that's why I'm a little late to the party on this one.

This game is actually a game I wanted to share some thoughts about, unlike Maneater which is just some great mindless fun. Right off the bat I thought Ghost of Tsushima took you right into the action, and I loved it. I didn't even know where we were but I also yelled "For >Tsushima!!" as I charged down the hillside. My point is I was pulled into the setting and story right away.

What really grasped me at first was the stunning use of color, saturation and contrast. Every aspect of the graphics generally really wowed me. Then I got to experience the combat as a samurai. Before I got to explore any of the skills, learn any of the skills I thought the combat was satisfying. Even more so with the following perks. As the title sugguest you can be the "ghost". Which is also really satisfying. People say it's like Assassins Creed but in a samurai setting. That's like saying Doom is like Call of Duty with demons. No, Ghost of Tsushima feels alot more like it's own. Not like Assassins Creed or any other game with stealth elements. Sometimes the game forces you to do tasks as the ghost. Like telling you that if you get spotted it's game over. Although I love the stealth gameplay aswell as the thrilling face to face combat. I wish the game offered you more RPG elements in that regard. I think I should be able to always go the "honorable" way if I choose to. I played through the story with both the samurai gameplay aswell as the ghost on hard difficulty and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Call me sappy, but I had some tears 3 times during the story. The game really explore every main characters and make you understand them and somewhat care about them. I thought they built their characters superbly. There was 1 or 2 characters I didn't really care about, but I think that might be subjective. The story overall was perfect and I couldn't ask for more. And this review has gone on for long enough, I just really wanted to share my opinions because this game really suprised me in alot of ways.
One thing I thought was kinda bad for me as a trophy hunter is that the game has an obvious armor with traits you feel like you have to use if you are a trophy hunter. Because it gives you 60% map unfogging and the controiller shakes when you're near a secret or collectible. I never used any other armor or explore different combinations because of that trophy hunt. But if you don't really care about trophies, this is not an issue at all. The armor and items gives you plenty of different choices and combinations you can explore and tailor to your playstyle.

I loved this game, and it's absolutely a high contender in my game of the year list. I thought it was beautifully done and the story was excecuted excellently. I'm hoping for a sequel in the near future!. Great job Sucker Punch!

The only thing i really found annoying about the game was the lack of lip syncing with the Japanese voices with the character models. I absolutely loved the choice of the VA for Zoro being the VA for the main character. Otherwise its a beautiful game.

Aside from the very few bugs on release and something at the very end I disagree with, this game is absolutely amazing. With amazing graphics, interesting characters, and a wonderful story, this is an amazing tribute to Japanese culture and a great way to honour those who died defending Tsushima.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I started playing the game right after the release and had smaller and larger breaks in between. Now, after almost 50 hours, I'm done and very happy to have started it again and again.

    story

For me the greatest strength of the game. The campaign is divided into three acts and shows a clear increase. Act 2 had parts that made me pause again and again, but the transition to act 3 and especially the last act raised the game by one point for me.

The first Mongol invasion in Japan around the island of Tsushima is treated. You play the fictional samurai Jin Sakai, who establishes himself as a legend on the island in the course of the game and defies the Mongols with everything he has. Khotun Khan as Mongol leader wants to subjugate the island and Jin is forced to operate outside the ways of a samurai.

I found the villain in particular to be a strongly chosen character who was staged very well and symbolized the strength and cruelty of the invasion. In connection with this, however, the rebellion of this island against the overpowering Mongol army through skill and solidarity was very successful.

The game has some incredibly good dialogues and knows how to convince with the whole atmosphere it creates. In addition, there are many well-made cutscenes, but they have to cut back on facial expressions. For some characters that was just too wooden, too generic.

In addition to these two main characters, there are also numerous minor characters who have done really well side quests. Although many are about revenge, the outcome is not always the same. Characters like Masako, Yuna or Sensei had nice quest series and really feel like Jin's constant companion and sometimes like newly made friends united to stop the invasion.

The synchronization does the rest and is done very well, but I also played it in the original every now and then.

Here are some more quest example highlights: The Spirit of Yarikawa, A Reckoning in Blood, Hidden in the Snow.

    Atmosphere / graphics / performance

I've played the Ps5 in performance mode for the last 20 hours and it went absolutely smoothly. Wonderful to play. By the way, Tsushima Island looks fantastic. The different colors of cherry blossom petals and many other flora is simply beautiful to look at and offers you fantastic opportunities to use the photo mode again and again (I used it a lot).

You never get bored of marveling at the scenery, riding through the landscape and enjoying the many colors.

But not only the set design is convincing, the music also contributes immensely to the atmosphere and is just great to hear.

All gold that glitters? What I especially missed about Tsushima were really striking places that really look great. The villages or smaller settlements or large fortresses were too generic for me, not present enough. I would have liked to have had more of these passages that are really remembered, such as the big Buddha statue in the Omi monastery.

So you have a beautiful landscape, which lacks the distinctive villages in detail.

I also have to say that I often had problems with all the NPC characters right at the end. They often went on the spot and I had to wait for it to continue. Maybe that was a bit of bad luck, as I hardly had any such problems in Act 1 or 2.

An essential feature of the game is slowing down. Everything should be absorbed, played patiently and not rushed through hastily. Each mission is introduced with a character and the mission title and there is also a brief moment to pause after the mission. I'm actually a fan of slowing down and it didn't bother me during the main missions, but with other gameplay mechanics.

A constant deceleration is not really my thing and has always led to the fact that I put the game aside again for the time being.

For example very simple secondary tasks felt artificially inflated by this staging. You also had to spy out camps, etc., which really annoyed me because I often wanted to have the option to just go in front of the gate and challenge everyone and not be forced to play in stealth mode. Especially these stealth missions were too much for me and towards the end you were constantly forced to sneak past and act secretly.

In any case, to underline Jin's struggle with himself and his samurai code, one has to go other ways, but I think that some situations could have been resolved with a choice. Also, I wouldn't always have needed the animations after each mission and would have gladly pushed them aside. As I said, it was too constant for me to slow down.

The combat system is actually pretty awesome. You have many different ways to defeat opponents, especially many tools at hand such as e.g. the smoke bomb. You also have combo bars that you can fill up and the opportunity to heal yourself. I only recently played Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and even if Ghost of Tsushima is easy to fight, I think Sekiro is miles ahead.

But all in all awesome Game! 9/10

Whatever. Anyway, Game is really fun. At the first glimpse at E3, saw the amount of details they presented, I did not believe that this game is open world. But after like 70 hours into it, I can safely say that this is hands down the best samurai game ever made. Combat is simple (4 stances for 4 different types of enemies. dodge/parry when you need to), but it managed to keep interesting till the end. Story is really unique, probably a rather more interesting story in a video game. Graphics look really good, not because they look "realistic" but because of the art design. It is, again, very unique and special.

The only thing that is considered to be "bad" to me is that this game uses a old formula established by Assassin’s Creed long ago, which is rather hard to surprise anyone now. However, it is a old Assassin’s Creed done right. This is what Assassin’s Creed should be like, not a **** money grabber that pops up every other year with a more and more sloppy story to go with just to keep the series going. So yeah, it is still a good game in my opinion

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
