Flawless game in every way, great graphics, fluid combat, engaging and fascinating story. Small technical errors in no way hinder the great immersive and fun experience of the game, it surprised me too much.

Ghost of Tsushima is arguably Sony’s last hurrah before moving into the next generation. Thinking back to the original PS4 and its specs, it is incredible that a game like Ghost of Tsushima is able to run on such dated hardware, and yet offer a new, beautiful experience.

The art style and direction are impeccably done. It stays true to the Japanese culture and is visually eye popping.

For reference, I completed GoT on a PS4 Pro at 4K. As you explore the map, you will note that each section has its own distinct feel. And whilst we are on the map, let’s talk about fast travelling. It is insane to see what Sucker Punch managed to deliver here when confined to standard hard drive speeds. After completing Spider-Man, I couldn’t help but wish the PS5 was here now so I didn’t have suffer any more long loading screens. However, Ghost of Tsushima manages to make this experience significantly less painful and it is an impressive feat. Many open-world games can suffer from pacing issues when long loading times are introduced, but this is simply not the case in GoT.

The way you navigate around the map to your mission destinations and side-quests is very well done. Sucker Punch clearly intended for an uncluttered HUD experience, which is a great decision as it offers very little distraction and allows you to focus on the amazing art style. To navigate, a ‘guiding wind’ appears on screen, which is visualised by the trees and grasses blowing in your specified direction. It is elegant and simple, and something that I wish more open-world games would consider.

The fighting can be challenging, but hugely rewarding. This is not a hack and slash game, and nor should it be. I played this game on the challenging mode, which was brilliant. You have 4 stances you can take (technically 5, but I’ll say no more), and each stance is effective against a type of enemy. It works very well and is fluid. Perfect parrys and dodges will reward you with more effective takedowns and high damage. Alternatively, you can abandon the way of the Samuari and take on an assassin approach. Or, you can just settle with a bow and arrow. GoT really lends itself to different play styles and it is done incredibly well. You do not feel pressured to follow a particular path, and there are multiple outfits which offer bonuses for your desired play style. It can be as varied as you want it to be. I would occasionally swap between master assassin, samurai or as an archer. It kept the fighting and experience fresh.

My only criticism at this stage is the plethora of shortcut menus to access your kit and styles. Whilst I found the stances easier to navigate, I found choosing the kit less intuitive. I often went through long periods of the game not using certain items as I simply forgot which button combination it was and it would otherwise ruin the flow. Towards the end however I had just about managed to select all my equipment based on muscle memory. It may be worth spending some time getting used to this so you get the full experience.

The storyline is very compelling, as you would expect from a Sony exclusive. What struck me more, however, was that the side-questions were wonderfully done and incorporated. In many open-world games (I’m looking at you Horizon and Spider-Man), the side-quests often felt like a chore or tacked on. GoT doesn’t suffer this, they are very well incorporated and feel very much part of the world.

There is so much more I could say about this game. I held off for awhile as I was hoping the price would fall. However, Lockdown blues made me take the plunge and I am so glad I did. It is perhaps one of the best and most unique games I’ve played on the PS4. I tend to be apprehensive about open-world games as I find they can be in some instances torturous in length and pacing (RDR2 for instance), but I just couldn’t put this game down. I have yet to try out the multiplayer Legends mode, but I hear good things.

If you have been lucky enough to preorder a PS5, I would personally wait to play GoT on your new machine. In 60 FPS, this game is going to shine even brighter.

The best samurai game I have played so far. Amazing art style and graphics, good historical accuracy making you feel like you are in medieval Japan, good animations and a good story. But the fantastic combat game-play and better stealth than AC games is what truly makes this game a 10/10.

All I got to say is... Bloody Masterpiece this game is mate. Yes there are a few issues in the game like the camera and the animations in cutscene when speaking with other characters. BUT. BUT. Mate this game is just MY GOD. I LOVE IT. And I bloody hate ac type games. AND I LOVE THIS GAME. The exploring is just so natural. It does not feel like you are being forced to explore. The side quests can be sometimes boring, but they are all different and unique from each other. SOMETHING THAT UBISOFT DOES NOT BLOODY UNDERSTAND. The game world is just so beautiful it is an orgasm for your eyes. I promise you that you will spend a good chunk of time with the in game camera because its just so beautiful. The story starts of well in act 1 but then flat lines at the portion of recruiting allies. But once you end act 1. The story JUST TAKES OFF MAN. And the ending OOOOOHHHH MY GOOOODDDDD. Its just written so well. And do not get me started on combat. IT IS BLOODY GREAT MATE. You are Jin Sakai a lone samurai and you grow the legendary tale of the GHOST. And mate the combat just bloody reinforces the feeling of being legendary. The combat is smooth and gory and glorious. You feel like an absolute storm running and slaughtering through enemy encampments and bases. Its is just BLOODY WOOOWOW. You also have the opportunity of completing mythical tales that give the player the opportunity to get mythical move sets in combat and mythical armor. And all that mythical gear and tales. SO GODDAMN WORTH IT MATE. It is absolutely amazing how a small studio like sucker punch can wipe their arse on a huge studio like Ubisoft in a genre where Ubisoft is a seasoned veteran. And SP absolutely SHARTED ON UBISOFT. I had very low hopes for this game in the beginning but I am glad that I am wrong. Well Done Sucker Punch you guys are absolutely Amazing. Not only have you just made a Masterpiece of a single player game but also a coop game. You guys are the kings of 2020 games. Expand

Ghost of Tsushima offers a beautiful looking world that is worth you're time exploring. The soundtrack is top quality and so too are the graphics. The side content was good and so too was the story. A few bugs here and there did hinder the experience but it wasn't excessive and there where a few repetitive world tasks that weren't all that great.

This is my personal game of the year

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is actually a 9 for me but i think 10 is deserved, its a great samurai game, combat is also great, the opening sequence sound track successfully gave me goose bumps, the only thing that's lacking from this game is the content of the map in act 3, act 1 and act 2 has a really beautiful map with diverse environments that each bring these unique vibe to it, but map of the act 3 got only snow and feels empty, i think about 1/3 of the map is that burned down area which is kinda let down for me and the rees, rocks and the other stuff that used to fill the previous act map feels like it doesn't exist there, it only feels that we play 1/2 of the map. Other thank that everything is perfect and beautiful Expand

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
