Fallout 76 is one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. I've poured thousands of hours into the games from Bethesda Game Studios. They used to make games that were impressive and pushed the boundaries of video games. Fallout 76 marks the end of that legacy. I've poured thousands of hours into the games from Bethesda Game Studios. They used to make games that were impressive and pushed the boundaries of video games. Fallout 76 marks the end of that legacy. It's a soulless, joyless, haphazard experience that doesn't work on any level. The story is abysmal and the entire world of Fallout 76 is a joke. Flaming pitchforks, snow-ski swords, and paddleball paddles are the kinds of ridiculous items you'll find in this world. Bethesda undermines their own narrative constantly. They want their version of West Virginia to be haunting, but it's full of silly quests and stupid items.

The narrative, or story, of the game is poorly told through holotapes, terminals, and environmental story-telling. Not once have I met an NPC that is alive. The main plot is bad. Gone are the choices that defined the older Fallout games. You can't affect the world or the story in any real way. You're stuck with a static world that is, conversely, more cluttered and more empty than any previous Bethesda game. The audio log mechanic is poorly executed as well. It's easy to pick up 2 or 3 holotapes in the same area, and have to sort through your inventory to find them and play them. That's assuming there's no other players around making noise and drowning out the audio from that holotape.

The gameplay, likewise, is awful. The shooting mechanics of Fallout 4 are back in Fallout 76. Well, mostly. VATS has become a shell of its formal self. No more a slow-mo killcam, instead VATS has become a glorified auto-aim. It has also become almost useless. The enemies dart around, forcing the hit percentages to vary wildly. The inventory space is far too small, the stash size is laughable, and the mechanics around scrapping and crafting are so badly implemented that it's amazing Bethesda released the game in this state. You'll spend the entire game at or over the inventory limit. The entire game is built around exploration and Fallout 76 punishes you for ever bit of exploration you do. Multiple guns are necessary, as the ammo is scarce and unable to be broken down and re-crafted. The trouble is, those guns break often and are quickly replaced by higher-level guns. You'll always be out of space and holding out-dated weapons. Which brings us to another problem. The level-locked loot is a major problem in a game like this. You'll discover items you can't use for 20 levels. What are you supposed to do with said weapons? You could drag them back to camp and break them down, but they're essentially dead weight in your inventory. You could drag them to one of the rare vendors around and try to sell them, but they're so undervalued that you'd only get a few caps for them. The bottom line is that the inventory system, much like everything else, is poorly designed.

I can't believe in 2018 Bethesda released a game like Fallout 76. It's a miserable game with miserable mechanics. Red Dead Redemption 2 just released, and that game pushed the boundaries of gaming. God of War was released earlier this year and it was a magical experience. Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild released last year, and made for substantially better worlds to explore. Bethesda has learned nothing since the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion days, and it's showing. In a year that had some truly superb games, Bethesda dumped out a game that belongs in 2010. It's pathetic.

This game is going to provide me and my best friend the ability to play together in an open world we've both dreamed about for years. The lore is deep, the gameplay mechanics are satisfying, and the exploration is unmatched. Bethesda has the ability to patch bugs and add free content moving forward, and I'm looking forward to watching this game grow.

The game is essentially unplayable. I wouldn't recommend his game to anyone, unless you're a hardcore Bethesda fan and just needed to buy this game. I get it. I'm a COD fan boy and I even bought Advanced Warfare. But even I knew not to buy Infinite Warfare (which is what this game is the equivalent to).

This isn't Fallout 5. It was never supposed to be. Instead, it's the perfect mixture of Bethesda open-world gameplay and multiplayer elements. It's everything you and your friends talked when you sat around watching each other play Elder Scrolls or Fallout games. It's a completely unique experience.

It's not like Rust, it's not Fallout 4.5, and it's amazing.

I went in to this game expecting it to be a buggy mess, considering this companies track records for stuff like that and the multiplayer addition I am surprised. The game is actually really well made, as far as Fallout goes. This game is essentially Fallout 4 replace npc's with random people, it'll be as good as the people you play with, or as bad as the people you run into.

    - "Microtransaction Cash Grab" yeah... but it's all cosmetic...
    - "Its not fallout i remember" because it's not.. it portrays the FO world better than their other games imo

    Now for the actual review.
You basically get to play 2 different mode in this game, solo & co-op. I personally enjoy both for different reasons. Solo, i get to listen to all the story. Yes there are stories. The quests are, in my opinion, even better than Fallout 4. I played the full beta and at the release, I dropped 16 straight hours (thanks to the GF for grabbing me food) and didn't even feel like I finished the story I wanted to. I haven't had engaging stories like this from a video game in a long time that kept me immersed for 16 hours. I'm at work now and I can't wait to get back and find out what happened in the story.

Now co-op is a whole different story. It opens you to goofing off with your friends. You run face first into any challenge and start doing events rather than quests. You start capturing workbench and territories and join group PVP events such as "civil war reenactment" or play who can craft the better base. When your friend is downed by a horde of melee supermutants and you lob a grenade in the middle because you're an **** Hilarity ensues.

Also, I've sank probably over 40 hours into this game now if we're including the BETA and I didn't encounter a single game breaking bug. I was disconnected once (about 12AM EST at launch) and was able to instantly rejoin, and a few t-pose scorch. If that's unplayable to you, then idk. Good luck finding a game without bugs. Even my horse in RDR2 was running halfway into the ground at one point.

Fallout 76 is a good game... not a great game but a good one. I've spent about 10 hours on it so far and realize that is by no means a lot but I feel like I have a good idea about the various mechanics of the game. Here is what I feel are the good and bad things about Fallout 76:

    The Good:
    - Immersion without NPC's: Yes we have mic spamming idiots who don't know how to turn off their mic instead of direct interaction with NPC's. But I would argue that we get the same satisfaction from the various holotapes found in the countless nooks and crannies in the game. You can tell the developers really went out of there way to try and capture the charm and magic of these stories and in fact I find myself getting lost in the narrative of their micro stories.

    - Fun Quests: No not every quest is a banger but there are some really interesting and fun quests to play in Fallout 76.

    - Multiplayer Exists: Maybe your a solo player (like me) or someone who can't play a game unless you are playing with your friends. Well now Fallout appeals to both those crowds. As someone who hates player interaction in RPG's I actively avoid players, fallout makes it easy for me to do so with small world servers and limited player interaction. On the other hand if you need to play with others you can walk up to anyone in the wasteland and join a group with them.

    - Gameplay: First things first, Gunplay and aiming is the best it has been in the series. It's smooth and intuitive. In past games it has felt clunky and slow.

    - Crafting: In Fallout 4 crafting was terrible. It was limited and frustrating to put your vision together with the limited tools presented. But Fallout 76 improves all of that with enhanced crafting and schematics. Honestly it feels really good and the C.A.M.P. system is cool where you can build your base anywhere. That's about all I can say about that.

    THE BAD:
    - The Players: I know I said multiplayer was a good thing but this expands on that a little bit... Imagine you are searching a house listening to a compelling story of a scavenger who lost his friend to ghouls when all of a sudden you hear some **** idiot on a mic spamming music because he doesn't realize mics have the ability to be muted.... That's basically it. A simple fix would be to mute people by default or allow players to opt out of voice communication but I don't see that option anywhere. This is the main problem I have with the game and keeps it from being a great game for me.

    - Leveling System: This is different from previous games where you spec out your character from the beginning. Basically in this system you are good and kind of everything eventually. And there are no fun perks that I have seen yet but I'm sure they show up at higher levels.

    - Lack of manual saving: You can't save manually in Fallout 76 this hurts me a bit spiritually since as a Fallout player I'm very careful when going into mines and dangerous areas. Additionally it's hard to know when it saves automatically and i'm constantly in fear of losing the cool **** I got savaging.

    - Not difficult: Playing for 10 hours I would expect to die at least a dozen times. This isn't the case in Fallout 76. It's easy to breeze through enemies who die to one hunting rifle shot or two machete swings. It takes the fear out of exploring the unknown that comes with Fallout.

Overall I like the game. It's fun, in fact all I'm thinking about right now is how much I want to get back on and find more **** to build my base up with. I see where people are coming from with their complaints but it is not as bad as everyone says. If you love fallout you will like this game. Just be okay with a little bit of change. and go along for the ride.

    The game is really really good. The sad part about this, is that people are scoring the game without trying it, out of pure hate for it being online and having multiplayer, or because it's not Fallout 5, like they were expecting.     Whats new or back;
Gun condition and ammo crafting, you cannot sell or dismantle ammo you already have which is a shame but the low cost of making ammo makes is not to bad, just be careful not to make too much as ammo has weight and you have at this time a limit to your stash size (more on this later)

SPECIAL, now you start at 1 for each stat and grow as you play and level up, every time you level until level 50 you get 1 new SPECIAL attribute to assign as you see fit.

PERK CARS, this new system is somewhat confusing until you start messing with it and it becomes quite clear and easy, Want to play a snipper today and a melee brawler tomorrow? you can now do that.

Semi-Survival, You need to stay fed and hydrated, but nowhere near as hardcore as Fallout 4 Survival, you can still get sick and need to cure which add to the survival aspect of the game,

    Inventory
I assume they did these changes for server stability but I honestly am just guessing.
The Bad: You have a player inventory which is the same as you are used to, but now you have a limited stash, currently this stash amount is 400lb which at first doesn't look like enough, and you are probably right, but they are perk cards to combat this to make it less a pain (the pain is still there), some decrease your junk wright down 90%, some do the same for your guns/armor/meds.
During the BETA I never kept my stash over 200lb selling stuff to vendors when I went over or with items I had an excess of.
The Good: your stash is linked to chest all over the map, this is not the most realistic but it is very convenient when needed.

Base Building: you can build your base almost anywhere albeit not to close to someone else or to close to a town, as you level up your base size grows and you can add more to it every time.

Plans: Now you dont come out of the vault just knowing have to build a pipe pistol, you need to find the plans to build it, same goes for gun and armor mods, instead you can either find the plans to it or you learn them over time by dismantling guns and armor.

I am glad there is finally a Fallout game I can play with a friend and the changes they made are all positive in my book except maybe the limited stash size.
My personal review just had a few exerpts of the game, all in all, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone who enjoyed Fallout 4

So utterly disappointing and flawed in every possible way… The first few hours, most of it can be ignored, and occasionally the flaws can be forgotten, but only briefly before they come storming back to the forefront. An awful, boring, empty, pointless experience. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. It's worth mentioning that there has already been a Bethesda title that was equally as unimpressive: The Elder Scrolls Online - but looking at it now, it has transformed into one of the best MMOs out there. There's always the hope the Fallout 76 develops the same way and becomes something special, but for now, that seems impossible. It's a world away from that.

Fallout 76 isn't your typical fallout experience. You don't have NPCs or dialogue, but instead get real players that should fill this void - that ultimately fails to do so. It does some things right, but as of now I cannot recommend getting this game as long as it stays a broken and boring mess that it is right now.

Fallout 76 is the series’ Freshman introduction into the world of online, multiplayer games. As a result, we are experiencing all of the awkwardness and clumsiness associated with that season of life. It is imperfect and a bit uncomfortable, but I see opportunity for Fallout 76 to be more than it presently it - to be a truly great, rich Fallout experience.
