This is one of the best fallout games. It's new perk system is much more visually appealing. It's use of voiced character dialogue makes it amazing. The use of factions is good though not as well done as New Vegas. The guns are very good to use and even the melee combat feels good. However I would have like to see some more post game content but hey there's always mods.

Very different than the old ones but I enjoyed it a lot.
One thing I really appreciated is that the character finally speaks and expresses himself.

This is one of the best action RPG games. The last good game from Bethesda at the moment. And although optimization on PS4 Pro has not been achieved, and graphically the game stuck somewhere in 2010-13 from Fallout 4 after 6 years still gives shape to modern games in the open world. Perhaps this is due to the fact that microtransactions and huge soulless empty worlds were not so popular back then. In Fallout 4, the main story is not so important, here is the most important detailed game world, and it has excellent secondary quests. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 should be revisited. Let me first say I understand the knee-jerk reaction of not liking this game. When it came we were expecting another New Vegas and that is not what we got. Even so, I think people are too hard on it . Pros: Imersive world. Great art design, fun combat/perk system, great side characters and side missions. I love a lot of the "busy work" in this game. It gives you a reason to explore the world and a lot of it is fun. I love the settlemen building.
Cons: The story is bland and they dumbed down the RPG elements. No branching story lines. Overall deserves to be revisited

Worst Fallout game, not even a RPG. Far Cry style FPS with rpg leveling system in fallout universe. Quests are boring and have no alternative ways to finish. Dialogs are on school level writing. Every location has mass enemies with nothing interesting to interact withwith.

I remember having played fallout 3 in 2013 5 years after it released. I have good memories of fallout 3 and for me, that was a new franchise I discovered and was looking forward for the next installments. After, for some reasons, I wasn't able to get into Fallout New Vegas and I stopped after a few hours.

Now, almost 8 years later, I was wondering if I should give Fallout 4 a try. I'm glad I did. It reminded me a lot Fallout 3 but with positive improvements. Now, let's explain why I give it 7/10 which is a little bit low compared to the other AAA games I review here.

First, I think the ratings could vary a lot among players depending of how the bugs and glitches impacted your playthrough. For me, it almost made me quit the game after the first 10 hours. There's a whole faction I couldn't do because of a bug in Concord involving Preston, one of the main characters. So there is a lot of XP i couldn't get and I think this faction was really important (it's the first one and give you the first important missions). That' s why also I finished the main story a bit underleveled (L44). So, depending of each player's experience, I understand any ratings between 5 and 9 (the 6,7 average sounds fair)

I decided to continue my playthrough and after, the real fun began. Even though the engine Bethesda uses is really old, I had a blast playing this game and killing super mutants, hacking terminals and lockpicking doors. The companion system is great also.

    Here are a few cons:
    1. The graphics are disappointing. (not a significant improvement if we compare to Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas)
    2. Ridiculous long loading times
    3. The shooting is a bit janky
    4. The ending is weak

Final thoughts: There is a lot of meat in this game and you will have value for what you pay. You should give it a try if you can accept the bugs and cope with that. This is a good RPG and the open world is more organic than a lot of actual AAA open world games.

However, I feel that the new focus towards these weapon systems has hurt the ability for choice-making, which made other Fallout games before it so unique. Despite much defense that I've heard, I refuse to consider this game an RPG. Not in the same way Fallout 3, New Vegas, and even Skyrim were. I enjoyed the companions in this game. I thought they were well-fleshed out in terms of story, and I played with them beside me for almost all 40-50 hours I spent on the game. I also appreciate Fallout 4's beautiful world, and I think it's probably one of Bethesda's more creative over the years. Overall, I liked this game. I don't regret playing it. But there are some important flaws that hold this game back, and prevent it from reaching its full potential. Expand

With my long backlog of games I normally only do one playthrough so I didn't get to see how my in-game choices affected (or didn't affect) the story therefore this element of the game had no impact on my personal enjoyment. There were things I didn't like, for instance the story and ending could have been better and the framerate was extremely poor in some areas, but I was having so much fun with the game otherwise that those things didn't make much of a difference.

Pros: Power Armor. Improved graphics/shooting mechanics from previous entry. Lots to explore. Companions are interesting. Base-building was fun (see cons).

Cons: Some missions get repetitive. The story/ending could have been better. Base building (and protecting your base from attackers!) was a great idea that was left undercooked. The framerate in some areas is unacceptable.

Honestly couldn't Bethesda at least try and patch this issue? I mean okay your bringing out new content with the Creation Club but your not patching the game and there's alot of places and battles in Boston Area and it still has problems.

Sadly I doubt will ever get a patch for the ps4 since Bethesda got bought out by Microsoft, but man this could have been a great game if they would have just spent a little more time with it

After NV my second favorit Fallout game. I play on Pro with SSD and a ton of mods, and this game looks and sounds great. Gunfight is, for the first time in Fallout history, good. The world is worth exploring and the characters are worth meeting. Nowadays, you get the game for less money than a cup of coffee. So there is no reason not to try it.

The world is pretty much empty except for raiders and bugs and what not, and filled with enormous amounts of trash that you are compelled to pick up so you can craft various armor and weapon upgrades, or to build pieces for the useless settlements. In fact, that seems to be the main point of the game. Collect trash, and build and maintain settlements all over the map.

The graphics are very sub-par, so is the music/soundtrack. I was surprised how poor the game looked. Not much of a step up from Fallout 3. Controls are super clunky on PS4. I had the hardest time aiming and targeting.

There really are so many much better games available for PS4/PS5, I don't know why anyone would bother with this trash.

I honestly love the dialog. The mute character always felt a bit weird and Courtenay Taylor is an amazing choice for the protagonist. The sarcasm is awesome, the character creation is great, and the settlement build mode is not bad, but could've used some more items and better snapping.

The early days of the PS4 were an ugly time for games and Fallout 4 is no exception. In 2021, the Fallout 4 looks and plays even worse compared modern gaming, but the SSD in a PS5 is a savior to get through the game's many loading screens. You experience on an old PS4 may vary.

Fallout 4 looks bad. Compare it to The Witcher 3 and there is no contest. Compare it to Fallout 3 and you wonder what Bethesda had been doing for 7 years. It's not just the lighting, character models, and ever present green hue. The game recycles models from Fallout 3 and itself, over and over, so you really have no idea where you are or what the landscape is supposed to be. The character models and faces are indeed terrible. Enemies are completely uninteresting and all wear variations of the same types of armor. The dialogue options are just as generic and dialogue options rarely, if ever, have an impact on the game.

Fallout 4 also plays bad. The V.A.T.S. system from Fallout 3 returns without any apparent changes. (Was this entire game planned as DLC for Fallout 3?) Players can queue up attacks in a way that briefly turns battles into turn based encounters. I like V.A.T.S. as an alternative for RPG fans who are not saavy with shooters. However, if you are saavy with shooters, the live action gunplay is garbage. I don't expect a Bethesda game to play as smooth as a Bungie game, but at least nail the fundamentals of slowing down the reticle speed as you near the target. Or put another way, playtest your game with a controller and not a keyboard and mouse! I found that cover and sidestepping made no difference with enemies. You stand (or crouch) your ground and shoot until all enemies are dead. Every battle is like a war of attrition. Whether you go melee or guns, V.A.T.S. or live action, the gameplay has to pause every thirty seconds to a minute while you scroll through a menu to use a health item.

By the way, I have not got gotten to the worst part. The game forces players to build settlements and manage the settlers. At first, I thought this idea was a little tacked on but had intriguing implications. Those fine thoughts were dispelled as soon as the game forced me to assign a settler to work a water pump. There is no overarching menu screen for this. You cannot boot up a version of Fallout Shelter on your phone. Instead, you clumsily enter crafting mode, highlight a settler with your reticle, and then highlight the item you want the settler to work. If you do not set up your settlements well enough, they will be constantly attacked by enemies. The attacks will show up as quest objects and you can help if you want. Don't. The attacks never end and you will never actually finish the game if you go down the base building, base defending rabbit hole. The entire settlement system and the defense of settlements looks from the outside like a great way to pad playtime so the game looks bigger than it really is.

The settlement and crafting system seems very 2015. Minecraft was incredibly successful back then and many games were jumping on the crafting bandwagon. Fallout seems like a good series to add crafting because you make do with the resources left behind. But not this kind of crafting. Not a chore. Adding insult to injury, every building you craft looks a ramshackle shack. No matter how you design a giant mansion for yourself, it will always look like a monstrosity. Why not just move into one of the cookie cutter office buildings that are still standing?

Fallout 4 does allow mods on the PS4 to change the playing experience. I saw some that make collecting items and thus base building easier by removing the carry limit. This is especially important because all settlement structures require parts that have to be salvaged, and it sucks to make multiple trips to carry it all. Various other mods solve the settlement defense problem. The downsides to mods are breaking the game and losing access to trophies. The game is already a sandbox that is essentially made to be broken. This is the only reason I play these kinds of RPGs. If I wanted a good shooting game, a good building game, or a good story game, I would play almost anything else.

All-in-all, Fallout 4 is a crap game. Playing it more does not make it better. All I really want is for Skyrim and The Witcher 3 to have a baby, and let me make my own character in a world that looks as good as The Witcher 3 and has the quality storytelling of The Witcher 3. Bethesda games are the best in their niche if only because they are the only games in that niche. To be clear about the effect of this, I waited this long to buy Fallout 4 because of how disappointed I was with the game trailers and previews. Quality matters.

Update: I finished the main story and my opinions are unchanged. A dud is a dud.

Full Disclosure: I downloaded Fallout 4 for "free" with the PS+ collection on PS5. Not only did I not pay $60 for this game, I also did not suffer long loading times.

    This is a solid game all around, yes it isn't as good as Skyrim for a number of reasons;

--Too many boring go clear a building quests
    --Locations reused multiple times
    --Uglier terrain
--Nameless NPCs to 'flesh out' cities
    --Lack of location variety
    --Obvious copy and pasted areas
    --More bland infinitely generated quests

But it does come with a bunch of upgrades

--you don't have to level up a perk to unlock a perk, you are free as long as you meet the level requirement for that stat
--you don't have to go into a menu to loot containers and bodies
--your followers all have their own backstories, and as they get to like you they reveal a little bit of it here and there, until they ask you to go on a quest with them!
--completing said follower quest unlocks a perk
--there are multiple factions that actually oppose each other, you can't just join them all

There are also times it seems Bethesda didn't care about the game. When you clear out a location to build a settlement, the dead bodies stay there forever, and I am playing in 2021. You'll be addicted and frustrated. It feels so annoying and passive aggressive when they force a random event "kill some people for no real reason" missions to be selected and pop up on your HUD.

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
