The only thing that this game has improved on compared to its predecessors is the gunplay. In every other way, it is a massive step back. The dialogue system is completely insulting, with only four options that boil down to: Yes, Yes?, Sarcastic, and No(really means not right now). The script is laughable, and if the game didn't take itself so seriously, one would think it was satire. The only thing that this game has improved on compared to its predecessors is the gunplay. The script is laughable, and if the game didn't take itself so seriously, one would think it was satire. There are no longer multiple ways to finish most quests, because every quest is "Go here and kill this". The game no longer has skills or traits, instead they've "streamlined" all the rpg elements away, and all that is left is a game that is no longer an rpg at all. There is now only one build, and that is a combat oriented one. It honestly feels more like a poorly made clone falling somewhere between the mass effect and borderlands series. This is not a good thing. Stay far away unless all you are interested in is shooting things and looting locations. There is no payoff at all for your actions in this very shallow playground of a game. It did accomplish one good thing by making me want to replay New Vegas! Expand

Fallout 4 managed to catch my attention but only a small way into the game. I started with low expectations hoping I would be surprised once it starts and well it hits common ground fast. That's good for me. I believe that if you're making a sequel you should keep the good mechanics of its predecessor and build upon them. After finishing the first major story quest an elderly woman mentions the words "Diamond City" to me so I brush it off as the location I will eventually get to by following the main quest line. Five hours and a bunch of quests later something hits me: that vague hint was the main quest wasn't it... The game had me believe that for the past five hours I was doing repetitive familiar quests over and over again with the hope of progressing the game's some what at this point unknown plot. The reason why this annoyed me was due to the previous entries making clear what was a main quest and what wasn't. With the full intention of finding out what the hell I should do I journeyed to Diamond City to find some plot. My instincts were right and from that point onwards the plot never slows down again. This is unfortunate as the tone and general urgent feel of each main quest I began to ignore the side quests. In the end the plot was okay but nothing spectacular. They try to pull of too many plot twists towards the end that make earlier plot points seem pointless to have.

Side quests...oh boy the side quests. This game boasts at how much you can do and how alive the world is as each NPC has their own little story you can get involved with. Unfortunately the creative team must have only worked on the main quests as around 75% of the side quests are rinse and repeat the same. I especially find the Minute Men almost pointless to help if it wasn't for the big faction war Fallout games have at the end of them. The new mechanics are mainly for the Minute Men quests which I got bored of fast so they were pointless for me. What made this worse was the fact that other mechanics were taken out making this seem like a waist of time. Things that helped so much like the repair mechanic have been removed and instead I have 7 10mm guns in my inventory taking up space. Making matters worse Fallout's currency becomes pointless in this. I don't remember one time I had to buy anything in the game because everyone kept handing me crap. The power armour is another complaint of mine as I only had to use it twice during mandatory points I needed them: 1. when I got it 2. when I walked into the Green Sea (covered in radiation).
Besides from this I completely abandoned it with power cores building in my inventory and no desire to use them.

NPCs in this game are a joy to talk to with the voice acting and AI being on point for the most of it (even though I mainly use them as body shields). Fan and personal favourite Piper has been a fun companion and rivals Serena of Skyrim and Veronica of New Vegas. Didn't like the single companion capability when previous entries had around 3 companions at a time.

Rounding it all off with the graphics and scenery: the graphics are beautiful but at times seem waisted on a forgettable bland and mix of the settings from Fallout 3 and New Vegas. You will have the occasional moment where you want to just stop and stare but with those moments far between I never bothered to remember most of the locations. A highlight for me was the Brotherhood's airship appearing

I have been a fan of the Fallout series since the release of the first game. So I had very high expectations going in. Did it deliver? For the most part. FO4 is as good as I had hoped it would be, however, it has some glaring flaws.

I have been a fan of the Fallout series since the release of the first game. So I had very high expectations going in. Did it deliver? For the most part. FO4 is as good as I had hoped it would be, however, it has some glaring flaws.

    The negative:
    - First and foremost, the game engine. It is clearly past its prime and we've seen it far too much now. Don't get me wrong Bethesda did try to spice things up a bit and did the best they could with it. It's still a fun game engine. Just far, far too familiar at this point.
    - Diverse dialogue, or lack thereof. The dialogue wheel is really far too basic and is mostly filled with different ways of saying the same thing. It kinda limits the immersion at times and feels almost lazy.
    - The settlement system. While this was a good idea, aside from trophies and the few related story missions, it serves little purpose and is really nothing more than a distraction. It would have been nice if they had made it so you could completely clear settlements of all debris (I know there is a mod on PC that allows this.) Limited landscaping might have been nice too. All in all this feature felt a bit incomplete. With some tweaking it could be some thing great.
    - Ending(s.) Where are they? Every Fallout game's epilogue gave you a breakdown of what happen to all the key areas/factions, kinda making you feel your actions made a difference. FO4 has kinda done the ME3 ending thing. A few slight variations of the same thing. Kinda lazy when you have just spent +100 hours on the game.
    - Soundtrack. It's mostly the exact same music from the previous FO games. The 50s did produce more than ten songs you know. Also hard to believe that no one in the wasteland is composing original work.
    - Character models. Bethesda, yo people is uglee. Seriously, it's the PS4 yet the people look very plasticee.
    - Recycled background banter from unnamed NPC fluff characters. OMG, they keep repeating the same dialogue over and over. It is so irritating. Same goes for banter from raiders. Funny how all these different raiders in different locations have the exact conversations.
    - Sex and nudity. Seriously, FO4 was rated M in the US and 18 in the UK. There is plenty of violence, language and drug use. Yet for whatever reason everyone in the apocalyptical wasteland is chaste as an after school special. Take a page from the Witcher games, if you're going to make a game for adults, then treat them like adults. FONV at least tried in this regard. It still amazes me that this puritanical approach still exists in this day and age.

    The positive:
+ The Commonwealth. At first glance it come across as small. But you quickly notice that it is overflowing with locations.
+ Boston and the rest of the Commonwealth is beautiful. When compared to FO3 and FONV, FO4 is just visually stunning and so much more attention to detail. Every location feels like it was given a personal touch.
+ Quests galore. There is just so, so much to do in this game. A ton of well written content. I do feel that the main quest lines do get pushed to the side to easily and could have been given a bit more of a sense of urgency, but this is not a negative thing, just a result of the overabundance of side content.
+ Companions. So many to choose from, and they're all pretty fun to play with. A shame the aggression setting from NV is no longer there. Companions do make it a little hard to play a stealthy approach. But once you have the best gear, that approach kinda gets redundant.
+ Crafting. The weapon crafting system is awesome.A shame that armor crafting didn't really get as much variety.
+ Story. Just a great story with a ton of new lore to keep things interesting.
+ Voice acting. Just fantastic all around from all involved.

    Overall:
For all my gripes, I still loved the game. With a bit more polish and effort Bethesda could make something far greater than they already have.

I prefer to use the VATs combat system primarily, and even 100 hours into the game, every slow motion kill is still extremely satisfying. I became really invested in the settlement building aspect of the game as well, and felt a great sense of pride in the communities that I created in my personal version of the Commonwealth. I didn't run into any gamebreaking bugs like some players seem to have. All of that being said; for a person that has adequate time to play, I strongly recommend. Expand

I know a lot of people were frustrated that the game was dumbed down in order to become more appealing to casual gamers, and although that is a shame, it's no reason to downrate the game into the negatives, purely based on being let down according to your expectactions. The shooting is extremely imprecise, as I often just resorted to walking up to whatever enemy and punching them in the face. I have hit several bugs, such as items disappearing right in front of me, NPCs stop talking in mid sentence for no reason, and some clipping issues. I have been told that they dumbed down a lot of the mechanics from previous games, but after my experience with this one, I really don't want to go back and play other games in the series. Haven't played any of the other Fallout games, so for me I'm new to the franchise. I am not nearly done playing, and am a bit of a newbie still, but so far I absolutely love it. I can buy into the world, the characters, learned the crafting system, and the leveling system is interesting. - Plays similar to Skyrim, but with better graphics, and a different setting.

After a while, I lost confidence in the game as I was always expecting things to break. I've been forced to reload old saves in order to avoid critical game breaks, resulting in me losing hours of game play and forcing me to backtrack character progress and story missions + conversations. It is as fun as it sounds.
I understand that on PC there are workarounds available (where you can use various console commands to skip missions or scripts) but playing on console, you are basically stuck.

Looking at what Bethesda has planned for us, you get Fallout 3 with improved graphics and a non-interesting story that fails to motivate you. You will most likely get lost in a myriad of side quests that are even more boring. The characters you encounter are somewhat charming and has strong personalities, but fail to stick to your mind. I have better memories of Mass Effect 1 followers and that was how many years ago?

The news are a crafting system that will force you to collect junk, speedtravel back to base, drop junk, collect junk. Rince and repeat, over and over again.
There is also an level editor where you can build houses and defences. This editor is no exception to the poor design which the game reeks of. Anyone that have used any level editor (Unreal, Hammer) will probably rip their hair trying to control this mess included in Fallout 4. Seriously, a first person build editor? WTF. At least make the walls snap in a favourable way, please.

You're better off playing Fallout 3 again (or if you haven't, you should), because this mess is simply not worth your time.

I looks as good as some areas of Half-Life 2). I'll admit that at times the world does look very good, and this is usually when the sun is setting or during a storm. Anyway, on to the positives; Bethesda are amazing at telling a story and making you feel that every decision you make will have an effect on where the story ends up, and that's because it will. You never feel like you're making your own story because truly you are not, thats basically 4 generic choices in every dialogue ( Yes, No, Info, Sacastic/funny joke ), and the worst is that you don't get those exclusive skill dialogues, only speech matter here. Other thing that bugs me alot is the complete removal of skills and the karma system, there is no level cap so eventually you will become god by unlocking all the perks. The other two weak points are the generic ''find your son'' story and the **** glitches. The endings leave something to be desired with very few alternatives. The side quests are few in number yet most are very interesting and unique. Fallout 4's main strengths however are its world and its game play with a great crafting system, unique enemies, and a variety of cool weapons. The companions in Fallout 4 although not very useful are interesting, some offer some of the best quests and backstory in the game. My one major problem with Fallout 4 is the dialogue system I miss New Vegas with its silent protagonist and multitude of choices in the iconic Fallout style. Bethesda made a huge blunder with a voiced protagonist because each quest requires far more work accounting for the shortage in the main game as of now. If Bethesda had left this feature out perhaps they could have used their time to add in more side factions like in New Vegas where some groups like the Boomers or Khans were not essential for an ending. These down sides did not effect my enjoyment in the game and though I do hope future DLC will give the game a fuller feel I would recommend this game to everyone. Expand

Your character is the only survivor of Vault 111, in Boston (called "the Commonwealth"), after a nuclear holocaust. The new character creator is very powerful and very fun to use. This is one game that, when you picture in your mind what you would like your character to look like, you can actually make it. Even if you are not happy with your design, there are a few opportunities to change it before you get into the main game, and you can get facial reconstruction surgery at any point you like.

The gameplay is comparable to any purely FPS game, and is actually a lot more fun. The crafting system is literally the best crafting system from any game, and using a workshop to build settlements can be considered a game in itself. You can literally spend hours building whatever you like. There are endless possibilities.

The game soundtrack is amongst my favourites. It is tense, powerful and captivating. Even the soundtrack playing at the main menu is beautiful. I just wish you could buy a CD of the soundtrack like you could with the first Mass Effect game.

10/10. Great game. There is always something to do, somewhere to go and something to find. You will never be bored.

While not perfect Fallout 4 is a gripping, sometime stunning and profoundly enjoyable game. It's story (like Fallout 3's and Fallout new Vegas's, and Skyrim's) is lacking in tension due to the player's ability to choose NOT to do the main quest. It is hard to be fair to the game if one attacks it due to its story. Like all Bethesda RPGs the story is teh way in, the player ultimately chooses their own way through the story.

That said in comparison to Skyrim, Fallout 4 lacks something else in this respect. The programmers have been too faithful to the post-apocalyptic setting. So much so that it is hard to feel "at home in" in the same way that one can in Skyrim.

The games graphics are a mixed bag. The scenery is breathtaking, the monsters are horrifying, the armours are excellent (the armor system itself is worthy of a note of its own, see below), but the character's and NPCs' face models and textures are ghastly. Given that the Skyrim modding community has had to fix this and has achieved amazing results I have no doubt the Fallout modders will do the same soon enough. But that said why do they need to? Why is Bethesda choosing to make such poor quality face models?

The game system engine has been upgraded and the changes are great. The new armour system is ingenious and weapon modding is good fun. Settlement building is in my opinion however tedious but YMMV. Playing on the PS4 the graphics are solid, the frame-rate is fairly steady (similar to the Witcher 3, there some fps drops occasionally but not often) and the controls are fairly intuitive. The only serious user interface issue I encounter is its sorting of some important quest items (especially holotapes) into a catchall "MISC" menu where they are inevitably lost. This was a crazy decision by the developers and needs to be fixed.

The lost of points in this review are less about the game itself however than the lack of imagination on Bethesda's part. If you've played Oblivion and Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas you will find this game repeating the same type of quests (fetch item, clear area, rescue loved one, pick a side) played out with little narrative depth, and little variation from the 2006 formula (or 2002 formula if you've played Morrowind).

Unfortunately I can't see myself sinking over a thousand hours into Fallout 4. Like it's sibling titles, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas once finished I wont go back to the wasteland. The success of Skyrim over 4 years ago still over shadows Fallout and the impact of games like Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V on the open world oeuvre has left Bethesda's tried and trusted formula looking a little old and tired, if no less engaging.

They say it's dumbed down and stats no longer affect convrrsation. This is wrong. People on multiple playthroughs are noticing differences in this regard. It has those stat/skill checks, it just usually doesnt give you a big text block saying "pick dis option using high int lol" So which game is dumbed down again? They say your conversation choices dont matter, but thrre are countless examples of when they do and you could even lock yoyrself out of things but being too mean. I even skipped a whole string of quests because of my high intelligence. Why go find new parts to a ship when you are smart enough to repair the old ones.

As for factions, you have four large ones that are all important to the story. You get tons of endings based on how your various truces play out, or you can take out three and have one reign supreme. Sorry but half the factions in NV had little impact on anything. Id hardly qualify random casinos as a faction..Oh, you could sell chems with the great khans? I have an entire farm I created with my own brahim where I make my own jet and make a fortune doing so. I even got a guy willing to give me nearly double what shops give. I shot up a drug deal, killed the witnesses, tossed their bodies in a river, stole the chems, broke into the place where they were made, looted it all, shot the place up, and had mister sandman visit anyone who accused me. I threw on a BoS suit, they thought I was one of them even though I was with their enemy, and infiltrated them.

The roleplaying is still here, you just gave a backstory and more defined motuves, you know, like every other rpg. Is the Witcher not an rpg because you gave to play as Geralt? Get real. My character is a smooth talking high intelligence woman, who is on the outside appears to ve doing goos, but in reality is a sarcastic asshile violent drug lord rebuilding the Commonwealth on blood and jet.

Let's talk about why I love this game. This is easily the best looking Fallout. While it doesn't compete with The Witcher in that regard, this game is certainly more fun to play. They vastly improved the gunplay, and as simeone who plays tons of shooters, it gets a thumbs up. The world is huge and there is so much to do. The most fun I gave is just wandering about finding new places. Two months later and people are still finding new things. I love the Settlement building as well.

I highly recommend this game. Ignore the ignorant haters who didnt play this and metabombed it took seconds after its release. Its a shame a few ignorant "professional reviewers" listened to that loud minority of gamers and repeated the same ignorance without checking the facts. I remember a certain "angry" reviewer who just jumped on the hate train without checking actual facts or giving a game like this enough time. Funny, but there is nothing angry about this guys reviews, he just **** a ton. I guess rather than making decent reviews some people just want to appeal to their troll fanboys.

There's a good reason why mostly everyone who is anyone plays this game religiously. It's that much fun.

How has this game drawn so much hate? I've played hundreds of hours, and really enjoyed all of them. The story line, I'll give you, is not entrancing. I don't mind. Fallout 4 is an ok game, but it's a terrible Fallout game, and I am rating it as such.

The list just goes on. It's an incredibly shallow experience and I grow extremely bored of it's repetetive quests and empty world.

Please, no more of this. Let Obsidian make the next one..

Would have been an 8 or 9, but the sub par graphics combined with some horrific loading times and watered down npc conversations = 6.

The building aspect while entertaining for an hour or so, is too buggy, feels rushed and shoehorned into the game. It also takes far too long to grind out scrap to build a mega base.. It should be fun not a chore.

I love Bethesda. I think they make incredible games, and when I purchase one I expect it to be my main hobby for 5-6 months. Let me start by saying that everyone who gave this game between 0-3 is ridiculous. It held my attention for a decent amount of time, but it was not on the level of Skyrim or Fallout 3 for me. I don't know if I missed something, but I barely found any engaging side quests!! Not even with the factions. It felt ridiculously repetitive. The beauty of these games for me is not necessarily the main quest, but the days upon days you can spend exploring the world and helping/ screwing over its characters. In this game, it felt like there was absolutely no point. All anyone would have me do is go clear some random camp/factory.

And nothing that I cleared out would stay clear!!!! Why travel the map clearing anything if you're just going to be sent to the same spot and do the same thing?!

Combat was fine, graphics were not incredible, but great graphics don't make a great game. Engaging content makes a game great, and that is what Fallout 4 does not have.

I'm gonna be honest I was very disappointed with Fallout 4. That said it still is enjoyable in some aspects; the shooting mechanics are better then ever, the weapon and base crafting are addicting and overall good additions. And that's about all the praise I can give.

The new dialogue system coupled with a voiced protagonist is probably the worst change since 3, speech choices are much more limited and is often presented as vague "yes" "no" "sarcastic" responses that the voice actor says in dull unconvincing performances. The story has a very cringe worthy scripted start and is a flipped version of 3 in terms of plot and the voice actor for the main character does not help. One thing I have to address is how awful the awful lip syncing and animation for the characters you talk to are, seriously it looks like it came from the ps2.

Level progression has also changed into a simplified skill tree which turns your character into one build that can do anything in stead of allowing for fun unique builds like 3 and New Vegas did. Its also very easy, you can acquire the most powerful weapons very early on and the new version of power armor in the form of a mech suit(that you also get early on) will remove any sense of challenge that remained.

The graphics are unimpressive and the frame rate is pretty bad oftentimes going below 30fps when too many things are happening. The environments are more varied than 3 and look much better than 3 obviously but are still pretty bland in design.

Though It is addicting and will give you many hours of gameplay it pretty obvious that New Vegas did it better.

This is my first review on Metacritic. When reviewing this game it's important to know that I am a huge fan of the Fallout series. I have never anticipated a game more than I have this one. It delivered everything I was hoping it would be. If you're looking for a fast paced game, this is NOT the game for you.

It delivered everything I was hoping it would be. If you're looking for a fast paced game, this is NOT the game for you.

When reviewing this game, I think it's important to know that it takes some time to get going, especially if you're going to compare it to the other two incarnations; Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The first 10-20 hours of gameplay are very similar, with some notable differences in gameplay mechanics that I feel are a major improvement. One of the alluring things about Fallout is that you can get started and then abandon the main storyline for a long time without worrying about coming back to it.

There are so many things you can do in this game before worrying about the main story, even avoiding the faction storylines leaves plenty to do. The thing I love about this game's story, and if you don't give it time to develop you'll miss out, is how the main story blends in with the faction questlines with a great surprise. I didn't see it coming, and I thought I knew about most of Fallout's secrets.

In reading a lot of the negative reviews I can only guess that people were either looking for a fast paced game, or didn't give it enough time to develop. I play over 70 in game days before I even touched the main storyline. There is that much to do.

I travelled all over, found most of the bobbleheads, built my level up and maxed out the few perks that I found the most useful. The settlement building mechanic is unbelievable. The weapon modding mechanic is so much fun. These two aspects make almost every item valuable for something, whether it be for making a silencer for your shotgun or a painting for your living space.

I find the FPS aspect of the game much improved. I hardly use VATS (the computer assisted targeting system) at all. The baddies are harder (think World War Z zombies) and smarter.

I have not had a single glitch playing it on my PS4. The load times are acceptable. The graphics aren't spectacular, but considering the sheer size of the game, I have no problem that the graphics aren't the best. They are definitely an improvement over the previous incarnations of the series.

If you want a game that is very involved, a lot of variety (from what I can tell, there's at least 6-8 different ways to play the story and get a different ending), and play time value for your money, Fallout 4 is the best game available.

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
