Skyrim is a flawed masterpiece so I gave bethesda the benefit of the doubt and bought Fallout 4. I regret it. The nice-ish graphics would matter more if the frame rate were above 4. To give a tangible metaphor it is like a chinese-made knockoff sandbox with knock-off toys that comes in a shiny new (£50 at launch) box. It accurately foreshadowed Fallout 76 and bethesdas laziness. I will not be buying another bethesda game after this broken mess. It plays like a ps1 game. Expand

Its more similar to Skyrim than Fallout 3 but a crappier Skyrim version.

The dumb down dialogue system was one of the dumbest decision they made. Guns are derivative. Power armor lost is novelty when it drops down to you at the early part of the game.

Base building was a nice idea but very very poorly executed. Characters were not memorable.

A preclude to this to come.

A lot of world to explore, yet it feels so incredibly empty. Quests hardly interact with each other from a narrative standpoint, the village building while interesting can be very frustrating especially when the building placement bugs out. Also bugs, because Bethesda. I personally got much more from New Vegas.

This is a bit of a bugbear of mine, too many games play fast and loose with their main narrative drive and saddle you up with irrelevant sidequests as you go, and it's a serious conflict that ends up undermining their fiction.

This is a bit of a bugbear of mine, too many games play fast and loose with their main narrative drive and saddle you up with irrelevant sidequests as you go, and it's a serious conflict that ends up undermining their fiction.

Basically, it's quite common practice for RPG developers to write a strong main plot, typically with dire personal stakes, but then also bolt on a large sandbox around it. On the one hand, this has the benefit of fleshing their world out, making it feel like it's an autonomous, functioning space, but it also has the risk of introducing severe narrative dissonance. An excellent example of this problem is Fallout 4 (though most open-world titles are guilty of it), where you're theoretically on a desperate quest to find Shaun, but in practice you keep taking detours to help some **** dirt farmer with his bloatfly problem.

Ideally, when making a plot-driven RPG, you'd want to pace your story progression with natural downtime periods, when maybe you're chasing leads that might further your urgent goals or you're trying to earn your keep while you're waiting for a previously-concluded thread to bear fruit, thus introducing both the opportunity and excuse to engage with side-content.

When people say they want choices, they want meaningful choices. All the choices and solutions to quests in Fallout 3 are absolute meaningless, with no affect on anything whatsoever. Not to mention a lot of the solutions are overly simplistic and too easy to achieve.

Also, Fallout 3 didn't translate jack and **** from the first two games. It's like someone parading around in your favorite series's clothes, telling you that it's totally part of your favorite series. But it's not. It's a cobbled together pretender that uses recognizable iconography and some RPG systems from the series to make people think it's an actual Fallout game.

One of the most glaring issues with Fallout 4 lies in its narrative. The game's main storyline fails to engage and falls flat compared to the intricate and morally ambiguous narratives of its predecessors. The choices and consequences, which were a hallmark of the series, are disappointingly shallow and fail to have a meaningful impact on the world or the characters. The lack of branching paths and limited dialogue options undermine the sense of agency, leaving players feeling like passive participants rather than active contributors to the story.

While the game's open world is expansive and visually impressive, it lacks the depth and variety seen in previous entries. The settlements system, touted as a major feature, feels underdeveloped and tedious, with repetitive tasks and limited customization options. The side quests, while numerous, often lack the creativity and complexity that players have come to expect from the franchise, resulting in a sense of monotony and missed opportunities for engaging gameplay.

Additionally, Fallout 4 suffers from technical issues that hinder the overall experience. From frequent crashes and frame rate drops to glitches and inconsistent AI behavior, these technical flaws break immersion and undermine the game's potential. The lack of polish and attention to detail is particularly disappointing, considering the pedigree of the series and the long development cycle.

Despite its shortcomings, Fallout 4 does offer solid combat mechanics and improved gunplay. The V.A.T.S. system, which allows players to target specific body parts, adds a tactical element to encounters and injects some excitement into the otherwise lackluster combat. The gun customization system also provides a satisfying sense of personalization and variety in weaponry. However, these gameplay improvements are not enough to compensate for the game's overall weaknesses.

In conclusion, Fallout 4 is a letdown for fans of the beloved franchise. While it presents a visually impressive open world and refined combat mechanics, the lackluster narrative, technical issues, and missed opportunities prevent it from reaching the heights of its predecessors. This installment fails to capture the essence of what made the Fallout series so captivating, leaving players with a sense of disappointment and a yearning for the depth and innovation that defined earlier entries. Unfortunately, Fallout 4 falls short of its potential and feels like a missed opportunity in the franchise's storied history.

They took away all the good features what the game had in New Vegas. The map is smaller and it took only 5 minutes for me to run from the other end to the other.

1 point for weapon customization and 1 for building a useless shelter.

Anyways - long story short. You're better off sticking with Skyrim until mods begin to roll out for Fallout 4. It's good in it's current state but.. Isn't exactly worth the price as of now. A huge let down from all the hype, learn your lesson - don't get excited for a game, no matter who the developers are. I just hope this isn't the future of Bethesda Game Studios games. To me Fallout 4 is like stabbing myself in the leg and trying to convince myself it feels fine.

(Copy and pasted stuff from my Steam review.)
    - It's a half/half game, it's good and bad. Story is horrible - gameplay is good. Personal character is horrible - NPCs are good. RPG is gone - shooter takes its place. To me this game feels like a spin-off of Fallout, kind of similiar to how FNV is to F3. There's a lot wrong but it makes up for with various aspects. Lore is once again messed up, it honestly doesn't even feel like a Fallout game if it weren't for the Deathclaws and BoS, those are the only two things that make F4 feel like Fallout. No player freedom like we were given in previous games, referring to TES and Fallout, we obviously have the freedom to roam around the wasteland but other than that it's nothing.

    - This is less of a RPG game and more of an open-world shooter. Bethesda wanted to do new and innovative stuff, while they accomplished most of it they failed to keep true to what the game is. The one thing they failed exceptionally at was the dialogue system, it fails to do what even other studios failed at. Voice acting is alright but doesn't fit in - and that isn't me being a nostalgic silent protagonist, it just truly doesn't work. Let me give an example, you can join whatever faction you want right, true. When you join the BoS you're a tough militaristic and devoted soldier to the BoS and their tenets. However when you're roaming the wasteland searching for your damn son you're a father figure and continue to act as such. In addition you can join the Minuteman and other factions - all of which your character acts accordingly. Getting the picture? One second you act like a loyal soldier, the next you're a father, then you're a passive smuggling rebel. It just flows so awkwardly. To go back to the system itself - like I said - it fails horribly. Yes, No, Maybe, Info/Sarcastic. What is this BGS? What the hell do you call that? Screw it, in the end it doesn't even matter because all of them mean "yes" anyways.

    - No choices, no consequences, nothing that made Fallout great is in Fallout 4.

    - Back on mods though, BGS in it's entirety SHOULD NOT rely on modders to make their games good. It's no wonder they're making mods available across all platforms, it makes sense now. They feel they're allowed to half-ass the games now because we modders will fix it and make it better, therefore allowing them to slack off. I'm still waiting for their plans to return to paid-mods, I can see it now it'll be with Fallout 4. But not going to relight a fire, on to something else.

    - For some reason I'll put the story here. It's bad. It doesn't even feel like any thought went into it, it's the exact same as Fallout 3 except the roles are reversed. Nearly the same god damn thing. You leave the Vault, go to a large wasteland city, find people to help, continue searching, find someone that knows something about where your goal is, convince them to help, meet your goal and find out that they're really the leader of something massive. Done, bam. Hell, I enjoyed a CoD series more than this, dafuq? Now after the aforementioned story you go on to faction stories and whom to support. FACTION STORIES HAVE ONLY TWO MAIN QUESTS. ALL OF WHICH ARE THE SAME. And that's it. That's Fallout 4. Alright, alright - I forgot to mention that almost all missions in between the beginning from the end are filler side op missions, get this, kill them, repeat. If you thought Skyrim was bad then you're in for a surprise when it comes to this. There is hardly ANY side missions. Yes I know the side op missions I just mentioned are actually called side missions and are considered missions themselves but that doesn't cut it, that's just **** Those side op missions belong in the misc missions not a mission themselves. I understand that not all missions can be long and drawn out quests that are their own entire story, there needs to be a balance between the two, Fallout 4/BGS just didn't do that. The misc missions far over-number the amount of actual missions. And it just doesn't work that way. Nothing is fun about it, hell you don't even go to new places they send you back to the same locations.

Remember this is only a partial review of notable sections from my actual Steam review, so things are a little out of order and may not totally make sense.

In Fallout4 and MGSV, what I feel about protagonists is more like a worker ordered to finish bunch of repetitive missions. The protagonists are lack of self motivation and purpose of living, and thus not able to build/push their own story ahead but to be an object/interface that you use to access the virtual world. In other words, they are inferior, relentless and neglectable, and I feel their story are mostly stiffly padded by narrates rather than developed during the progression of the their own doing.

In GTAV and Witcher3, dev put more work on depicting the mental development as the result of the surrounding events, and the story is actually progressed by the ambition and action of protagonist self. You can annotate this as that they are more susceptible/sensitive to the surrounding and have strong desire to achieve something mentally and independently. These makes a much more vivd and motivated feeling of a real human you are playing and experiencing a true life from him who want to do some amazing things to make himself unique, rather than a robot thrown into a open world to serve as a slaver.

Nowadays, the in-game world is exaggerated to a distorted proportion to characterization. In the extreme form, we know its called sandbox which some devs think is the future, but no! Not only the current and near future tech is far from enough to make player self to create a memorable and wholesome character in game, also it will be a tragedy if that becomes true. We don't want an object to control but a human with story to experience.

After all, Fallout 4 failed to create a protagonist who should act as an independent, self-motivated and susceptible real HUMAN and an engaging story struggled by the protagonist's own ass out. Next time, please focus on characters rather than just that open world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, it must be said that this game is nowhere near complete on PS4. The graphics/textures are awful and the framerate frequently dips; it's crashed several times with generic error codes; and there are numerous gameplay issues:

1.) There's no indication of mission difficulty ANYWHERE in the PipBoy. I just stumbled upon the Mirelurk Queen at level 13 and I can't do anything but barely scratch her with my pea shooters. Where are the indicators for mission difficulty? And I wasn't able to talk to Preston without doing this mission, so if he dies because I flee, both of my other missions that depend on him will most likely fail. I was able to talk to him, but he kept saying "we must focus on clearing this castle." Like he can't talk to me about other business while we clear the castle? COME ON!

2.) The Ghouls can lunge literally 20-30 feet, and you can't strategically engage combat on any scuttling creature. Humanoid foes can hit you with their spraying bullets from behind cover. I have screenshots of enemies behind pipes and walls with bullets still hitting me. If you sprint, you lose your AP; every battle ends up being a straight line backward shuffle trying to keep away from enemies that can do half of your health in damage by lunging and smacking you from 20 feet away. And your dog or whomever you have with you as a companion? Yeah, HAHA, good luck! Most often my dog is down within seconds, or just standing there doing nothing as the hoards advance on me. Pointless, stupid, and awful AI.

3.) The building system is completely stupid, boring, and lacks motivation. Some missions force you to do some of it, and for scavenging and breaking down components it's a necessary addition, but ultimately it's stupid.

4.) AP drains way too quickly unless you waste precious SPECIAL points trying to build it up at lower levels. Everything drains AP, too, including sprinting? What the...? Melee...AP drain; spring...AP drain; which leaves almost none for VATS.

5.) The idiot dog keeps standing in doorways and blocks your way in and out of combat. And when you have to trade with the meat sack to load your gear onto him, he runs off and you can't target him to get the command list!!! And speaking of the dog carrying loot, it's equally stupid and unnecessary...why not just let my character carry all of it himself??!!!??!

6.) Everything upgrade on EVERY gun or armor requires freaking adhesive, which is in such rare supply that you MAYBE can do one or two upgrades for every 7 hours of picking up worthless gear that you have absolutely zero knowledge of how it pieces together, how it will work, or anything. There aren't any guides or anything in the game to steer you along the proper path. If you're not at a workbench, good luck figuring out which components are required to upgrade your stupid gun.

7.) The worst offense: it's NO different than Fallout 3. Absolutely zero difference, and with the graphics and crashing problems, it's actually worse. This game has been hyped and hyped, as usual, to make a cash grab of gamers, but Bethesda should be ashamed and embarrassed to release a product this incomplete and buggy, not to mention frustrating. I realize they cater to the PC gamers and they'll fix all the problems for Bethesda, but we console owners demand better since we can't fix these problems on our machines. This game is going back and being uninstalled until such time as this garbage is fixed. I'm highly upset at spending this kind of money on a game this poor quality. And nice job with the embargo on the reviews until the day of to make sure no one else knew of this garbage in advance. Must be nice to buy space on Conan and hype up a game this embarrassingly poor. I'm sorry that I'm speaking like this, but I think it's a downright scam that companies are taking advantage of gamers over and over again. It shows you have zero respect for the people lining your pockets. Over and over again, companies aren't giving us next gen anything, it's bug-ridden, latency-ridden, framerate-stuttering, day one nonsense. Destiny and now this, this generation of gaming has nothing of its former self, just the same - or worse - garbage from the last gen with maybe a few graphical sparkles thrown in for good measure. How is this "next gen?"

If you're someone whos a big RPG fan, you're going to be disappointed. If you're neither of those you might have a good time with the game but if you do i strongly advise you whip out the last gen systems and play FO3/NV (Especially NV).

Now for a more in depth look at this game. First of im going to list what was improved upon, because though the game is bad i feel like for this to be a fair review these FEW things have to be acknowledge.

    1. The gun play is the improvement every Fallout player was hoping for. Its still not a perfect system, but its leaps and bounds from the last iterations of the franchise.

    2. The character creation is pretty fantastic, though the graphics dont allow this to shine as much as a graphically more impressive game would.

    3. The settlement feature is fun and adds quite a bit whilst being completely optional.

    4. Voice acting is much improved in terms of voice variations. Some of it still sounds poorly read.

    5. Animations all round are better (but again, not perfect or anywhere near) which leads to more interesting fights, different enemies have much more varied attacks than before.

Those are what i believe to be the improvements. Now the important stuff. What did Bethesda do to absolutely ruin this game. Here goes:

    1. Dialog wheel, dialog wheel, dialog wheel. When. Will. RPG Devs. Learn. I dont understand how this idea got past in a meeting. There have been numerous RPG's which have implemented this along with voice acting from a more traditional system and precisely ZERO have gotten better because of it. Did no one learn from the travesty which is now the Dragon age series? It limits what you are able to say/ask. You get limited information on what you're going to say which can lead to ridiculous encounters where you're blurting out stuff that is completely different to what you thought. And to implement it into a game the WHOLE dialog system has to be dumbed down, no skill related conversation options - what replaced it is pitiful and not fit for purpose.

    2. The environment is very boring from my experience. The major city in this game is ludicrously small and the map is not much better. There are a lot of side quests and encounters but im talking just the general environment, it all looks very similar and dull to the eye. Boston is the weakest setting so far.

    3. You dont appear to have much of an impact on the world, much like Skyrim. This is no Witcher 3 ladies and gents, Bethesda got this completely wrong and makes major decisions seem trivial.

    4. A very black or white morality with no reputation system or karma. IMO a step backwards for the series as it could have been improved upon from that last games and been made into a really enjoyable and in depth mechanic. Bethesda decided to scrap it instead.

    5. The perks...lord, the perks are terrible. Not that what they offer is bad, or even that there isnt variety. Just that without a skill system it all seems rather empty and shallow. Again, instead of improving upon a mechanic that people liked that just scrapped it to make it simpler.

    6. Your companions are just as dumb as the were before if not more this time. I swear dog meat spends more time in front of me in doorways than he does following. Again, you cant switch them from ranged to melee anymore, you can change how they fight. Another mechanic which could of been improved upon and made brilliant but instead was scrapped for a simpler less satisfying and frankly annoying system.

    7. The story has MAJOR pacing issues. Its all over the place, gets good after a few hours in but Bethesda needs to hire some better writers because it doesnt hold up with other game of the same genre. Not even close.

    8. New legendary monsters. This one might be just me because what they've chosen to do is a creative choice rather than just a bad decision. But basically its like borderlands. You get random really strong monsters on side quests or when you're exploring and they drop better loot. But calling them legendary really waters down the experience of fighting them. After fighting 'legendary' mongrels that are less than two feet tall and somehow take twenty bullets on normal difficulty the system just seems really stupid and arcadey. It doesnt suit fallout at all. I hope to god they take it out i feel like im playing some god awful MMO. In other Fallouts named raiders etc would be exciting, because they're characters, and they might have a story behind them. But now they just fade into the abyss of endless slain legendary enemies who sponge bullets. It waters it down.

The whole game just feels watered down. For every step forward they took two steps backward. Fallout 4 is an average game whilst being a TERRIBLE RPG and an even worse sequel. I hope these reviews get noticed by someone in Bethesda.

I wouldn't be surprised if in 4-5 years they try to sell us a new elder scrolls in the form of a mod kit for £50 and just continue to laugh as the money pours in :(

    1. Story. Very linear and illogical. As you go further the characters become less interesting and badly written, it seems that the devs just got lazy at some point. Ending just sucked. I got 30 seconds trailer that is the same for all variants. No more Roy Perlman in the end. No comment about the dialogues.
    2. Gameplay. Quite good, I must say. Shooting is fun and enjoyable, new VATS version is interesting and more logical for a 3d game dynamics. Interface didn't cause any trouble too6 though it's usable only on consoles.
    3. RPG Basics. None, they do not exist in this game. Black Ops 2 has more options and endings.
    4. Graphics. Satisfying for a console version. Din't like the "fog" in the buildings. Also there are some typical Bethesda bugs, such as missing textures, 3d models, or just artifacts.
    5. Music and audio. Amazingly done. No minuses at all.

To sum up. Fallout 4 is a very poorly done game. It is a major setback in the series, that got to much hype thanks to the professional marketing of Bethesda. As for me, remove the word "Fallout" from the title and the game will be 8/10 (name it "Rage 2" for example). But as for Fallout series game, it is a very bad joke.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have restarted my game for the third time yesterday. The first time, it was because a key NPC had just disappeared, yesterday I just lost the ability to crouch. I decided to start all over again, in a kind of hopeful way - maybe if I went back to square one, I would minimize the risk of bugs or something. And then I was hit by the bug where you're stuck right out of the pod until you restart your console.

So, yeah, even by Bethesda standards, this is painful. I've had buggy saves in their RPGs before, but the worst that had happened was to have a secondary quest I couldn't finish in Skyrim. Never anything this terminal and annoying. And I'm not mentioning all the bugs I managed to work around: crash to PS4 home when changing Piper's weapon, and so on.

Then, there's what Bethesda have done with Fallout, and that's worse than any technical glitch.

I can't stand the dialog system. I used to love it in the old Fallout games, and Planescape: Torment, when you had pretty much half a screen of dialogue options to read, and in certain cases having to be real careful about what you picked. The new system is just risk-free, over simplified nonsense.

Cardboard cutout characters, complete lack of substance in their backgrounds...

It just doesn't feel like a RPG any more. I miss my drug-addicted prizefighter from Fallout 2, a guy who had amassed terrible karma before setting on the path of redemption. That guy had a story, that guy had a style of his own, that guy was FUN. He was utterly rubbish at many things, he had to give up on some parts of the game because of that, and he felt real.

This guy I'm playing in Fallout 4 can just do everything, and he can do it very well. He's neither a beacon of hope leading a rebellion, nor the scourge of the wasteland terrorizing settlements. He's just an asshat who tinkers in his shed and just happens to own 4 power armours and 3 Fat Men despite having been outside the vault for a week or so.

I miss the quests from the old Fallout games where you could kill a guy subtly by tampering with his heart medication, rather than HAVING to blow his brains out with a shotgun.
    (Spoilers ahead)

The bit in the Combat Zone is, for me, very representative of the turn that Bethesda has taken. In an old Fallout game, you could have probably done any of the following:
    1. Wait for a fight night to rob the betting money
    2. Enter the cage yourself and become the local champion
    3. Bet on any fighter to rake in some caps
    4. Buy out one the fighter to have as a companion
    and probably more.

In Fallout 4, well, none of that. You're in a place, where there are other people. Therefore you will fight, and kill them all, and loot them to get back to base and continue building your glorified shed. Woohoo.

It's a decent shooter, despite the glitchy stuff. The modding mechanism on weapons is rather fun, and as usual the random exploration of places is by far the most exciting element of the game.

But it's jut not a Fallout game any more, and it's not really an RPG either.

After I got bored I thought, you know what I'll just make a new character and play the villain...nope you can't do it.

For me this game ended up being the same as Star Wars Battlefront in that they both feel like so much is missing and have that training wheel feel to them. I guess many game companies are starting to design their titles fro kids and leaving the older gamers behind and that is why many games are being dumbed down to the point in which they are...just a theory. Any way if anything this is Fallout Lite, less calories and less filling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is the latest "Roleplaying" game from Bethesda, known for creating The Elder Scrolls, an actual roleplaying series. And buying the Fallout series just to downgrade it.

First of all, Fallout 3 and NV was amazing, I have over 200+ hours on those games. In Fallout 4 I had to force myself to play it for 60 hours. This game is so dull and boring, well let's just start the review.

    1. The Story
The story is so predictable and repetitive. It has the same concept that previous Fallout games did. Find someone or something. The only difference is that those stories wasn't full of clichés. So I'm gonna sum up the story right now:
    1. Exit a vault
    2. Find your son
    3. Find some s**t in order to find your son
    4. Get help from different factions
    5. Your son turns out to be the leader of the bad guys faction (Original, I know)

    2. The graphics and audio
The graphics and audio in Fallout 4 has to the worst of last year, seriously it looks like a 2011 game. Audio doesn't even match up with what you walk or run on. The only good audio is Dogmeat's.

    3. The characters
All the characters and companions in this game are either from previous game, or they have a backstory that you honestly don't care about.

    4. The game world
Since this is an open world game you expect hours worth of quests and locations, right? Well there are 70% less quests and locations than in previous Bethesda titles, like Skyrim or Fallout 3. You'll just end up going to the same location for the same repetitive quests give to you by faction leaders over and over and over.

    5. Almost no RPG elements
That's right, you read that right. Almost no RPG elements. They were either removed or watered down since the last game. Let's list them all because I have nothing better to do.

    1. The dialogue system: The dialogue system has suffered a huge downgrade since the previous games. Remember how you could select from a bunch of dialogue options and use your skills? Well in Fallout 4 it has been downgraded to 4 options.
    Yes
    No
    Sarcastic
    Bye
    2. The Karma system: The Karma system from FO3 and NV has been removed. So you can just go around stealing and kill everyone you see without being punished.
    3. Skills: Skills have been removed and have been replaced with perks. Each time you level up you can chose from different perks.

    6: The HUD
The HUD in Fallout 4 is so badly make, the green color makes you want to puke. And the power armor HUD will give you a headache. Sure you can change it by going to the options, but do you really want to spend time to chose which color you want the HUD to be?

    7. The game is way too easy.
Even on Hard difficulty the game is too easy. You get power armor in the first 20- 30 minutes of the game, plus a minigun. From there you can just buy new weapons and armor by using exploits. Stimpaks and Rad-Aways are also too easy to find. I remember in Fallout 3 and NV when I found almost no Stimpaks and Rad-Aways. I Fallout 4 you find them in almost every location.

    8. The Power Armor
Remember how in FO3 and NV you found no power armor untill you reach a high level or start a quest that requires you to be high level? Well, as I said before you now find it in the first 20-30 minutes of the game. Taking away that epic feeling of finally entering a set of power armor.

Well, I gues that's all. I really don't recommend this game if you own a PS3, PC or XBOX 360. Because you can just buy FO3 and NV on those systems. BUT! If you don't own those systems, then I guess you can buy this. Just be ready to be disappointed

The charming moments that made up the other games, are notably rarer in this, and honestly only situational for some character. Your options are also severely limited when it comes to dialog (seriously....4 choices, that's it?) and don't even show you what your going to say accurately. Hell, some one made a mod, JUST FOR THAT. Dynamic Dialogs are cool concept, but they make some aspects of the game notably less fun, like if your companion decided they need to talk with you, right now, while your running from a deathclaw. The plot could easily be described as 'Bladerunner if it happened in the post apocalypse' and the lack of character build options by gutting out skills and changing the perk system to this....chart....is seriously disappointing. Sure the combat bits are pretty good, but Fallout as a series has been a game with conflict/combat, not only about rushing to the next fight. The scattering of legendary enemies/effects also makes legendary weapons feel less special, like...alot less special, than it did in the older games, and then the workshop dlcs that basically pay wall people to be able to craft ammo is terrible. Just like the change to radiation lowering your max health instead of, at set points, weakening your character in various ways, so your not INSTANTLY GETTING SCREWED OVER BY IT.

TL:DR It's a good general game, but not a good FALLOUT game.

I was then told to find some people in trouble eastwards and it turned out they were being attacked by things south of that location. So basically I knew this was just going to be another Bethesda game of trecking across the map to kill one thing and then coming back and getting the reward and then just grinding everything out with no purpose. I had this trouble with Skyrim as well where I found that there was far too much to do to the point where the side quests are well over 10 times the size of the main quest and they just spiral out into this endless void. But it's not worth it at all. All the characters are boring and they all sound depressed or just poorly voiced so I just don't care about them at all. Every quest is just so much effort and there's no final boss or thing to work towards. I personally prefer a game I can beat in about 40 hours and be satisfied with. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So let me get this straight: there are no choices that actually matter. Let me explain in Fallout New Vegas at the beginning you can join the raiders that prey on a small town or the townsfolk and each opens up a lot of different quests. In Fallout 4 the raiders attack you on sight and if you say no to helping Preston Garvey it still makes you do it, I said no and the objective still said do that action. And also the characters can't be killed, in New Vegas (kina ironic that what most people say is the best Fallout is the only not made by them) you could kill anyone, here more than half of these terrible characters you simply cannot kill. Lastly the graphics are terrible, when I shoot the ground I expect a bullet impact but no not even that... The graphics per time can be really pixelated, do you have any idea what game came out the same year and had excellent graphics (Mad Max). This game has been nothing but disappointing so far. I've played for over 40 hours, expecting things to get better, but they have only gotten worse, casual FPS style.

    The Pros:

-Graphics are improved over previous entries, but are still sub-standard.

-Enemy AI is slightly improved, animals will burrow into the ground when you try the old 'stand on a rock to get out of reach' trick that has worked in every other Bethesda RPG. Human enemies actually take cover and don't just rush to their deaths, they also weave when you are aiming at them.

-Building is a nice touch, although the mechanics of it could be hugely improved, as it is riddled with illogical flaws (like floating buildings). You can actually build a flying wooden house in the sky (not actually flying, just daft physics). Yes, really.

-The shooting mechanics are a little better than previous entries, BUT the improvement is not massive, and it still feels largely the same as F3/NV. Don't expect Bioshock shooting or anything.

-Crafting/upgrades. Good, but require far too much time investment to get anything worthwhile.

    -------------

    The cons:

    - Dialogue. The new dialogue system is absolutely atrocious. Now F3 and NV weren't exactly perfect in terms of dialogue, but they provided interesting, unexpected choices, with numerous outcomes in every situation. Remember spitting on Butch's sweet roll? Remember being an evil character? None of this exists in F4, and this is the game's biggest failure: dialogue is now reduced to 4 choices at all times:
    1) yes (the only way to progress)
    2) no (=come back later if you change your mind)
    3) why/what? (provides a recap of whatever has just been said, in case you skipped past the dialogue)
    4) Sarcastic (tell a joke, none of which are ever funny or remotely amusing, and none have any additional effect on the conversation).

Almost every conversation has only one outcome: violence. I've obsessively re-loaded and tried multiple ways around each conversation/standoff. Only rarely was there any choice whatsoever to avert a bloodbath. More than 90% of these situations have only one outcome. I enjoyed F3 and NV even more. F4 has completely destroyed the most fun and enjoyable aspect of the series: RP and interaction with NPCs. This has truly ruined the core of the game: your choices DO NOT matter. At all.

    -RPG elements removed. Seriously.

-Voiced protagonist. This was a horrible addition. I have not yet played a female character, but the male voice actor is ridiculous. He sounds completely nonchalant about everything. To clarify: his infant son has just been kidnapped, and he never gives any hints of being upset or traumatised, or being angry or anything. There are a few main story quests where he starts to sound a little upset, and of course, every storyline situation turns into a battle. You get a choice of 4 ways of saying 'ok, let's fight' every time before it starts. The voiced protagonist has no character, and really brings the whole RP element down as he plays the uncaring, nonchalant father looking (or not bothering to, most of the time) for his missing child.

-Ridiculous plot holes and narrative flaws:
    1) Kellogg (the man who kidnapped your son) somehow knows your son's name, despite there being no possible way of him knowing this, having abducted the baby as an infant and having never seen or heard his name. Somehow, Kellogg magically knows Shaun's name. Ludicrous. Bethesda cannot write coherently at all.

    2) I wandered into a place called Covenant, where my character immediately started getting dialogue options to ask about characters he has never heard of previously, calling them by name. This happens a LOT in Fallout 4 if you do your own exploring instead of just doing what quest-givers tell you.

-General lack of challenge, juxtaposed against cheap overpowered bullet-sponge 'legendary' enemies.
The vast majority of side quests consist of 'clear all ghouls' followed by the same quest 10 times in different locations. When it's not 'kill ghouls', it's 'kill all raiders', or 'retrieve item'. These quests make up the vast majority of the game's content, and they offer no dialogue at all, just combat with no other option.

Within the first 15 minutes or so of starting the game, you are given power-armour with a minigun, and you are made to fight a Deathclaw immediately after getting this gear. Within 30 mins of that, you'll join the Brotherhood of Steel after killing a few ghouls. The power armour removes any aspect of difficulty from this game, so I absolutely refuse to use it at all, it is like having god-mode cheats activated from the beginning. I can't stand using it.

-Bugs, ranging from the mildly omical, to the game-breaking.

Do you like Fallout? Avoid this garbage!

Soon it will hapen like in mass effect that every game had even less choices because it was a pain in the ass for the developeners to voice everything

Worst Fallout game, after a few hours of gameplay, i saw a lot of bugs on the map. I couldn't play it anymore because i couldn't end the situation because of the bug. I though it was only by me, but my friends had the same bug. Fallout 1-3 were much better than this. Idk what they did with the time. The game is broken.

This is my first review on Metacritic, I felt compelled to set up an account purely to warn people about this game. Im a long time fan of the Fallout series and I keep an open mind to most games that come out, but this instalment had me gutted after 14 - 15 hours of playing(PS4), I just was'nt bothered going any further with either the story(yawn...) or the exploring of the landscape. I was expecting Bethesda to release a wonderful game, I had never been so excited for a game release and I had been picturing how amazing it would be for a long time(Just like most of you im sure).

I give this game a 1 which is a true reflection of the garbage that is Fallout 4, I am disgusted to be honest that it actually made it to the shelves in the state it's in and feel like an idiot for buying it outright thinking it would be the best game ever made. This is the last time I buy a game from Bethesda, also the last time I pre-order a game, I have finally learned from my mistakes in recent years. Ok so ill try keep it brief:

    - Graphics are a joke, they look similar to games I played on 360 and PS3. I dunno about you guys but I was expecting much much better than this. Some of the textures are laughable and borderline offensive by today's standards. The NPC's and most of the characters are also lifeless in appearance and the guns dont look great either despite the hype about crafting/customising, they all look like scrap metal in the end. This game looks like it was made back in 2008 or 2009, so outdated in appearance.

    - Gameplay is pretty annoying and sluggish, I grew so frustrated with the shooting it just feels strange. I dont think I enjoyed a single exchange in the whole game, the fights were so boring and there are huge fps issues when the larger gun fights break out. Dont even get me started on perks and the protagonist, no matter what you choose/say it all feels and sounds the same there is a glaring lack of effort put into this part of the game. That stupid dog annoyed me greatly as well and the new V.A.T.S was also meh...

    - Performance is really poor, as I mentioned above fps issues a plenty and I encountered enough bugs to piss me off enough to give up on Fallout 4. Some of the bugs had me incensed, where you will be forced to reload an earlier save which can mean you need to repeat various tasks/missions all over again. Such a mess I recommend manually saving if you somehow like this game and want to play it further

Its a broken game, its lacking creativity on all fronts and the AI will drive you insane at times. The entire game is lazy and poorly made, its not functioning properly on all platforms from what ive read and in my eyes it is a colossal failure. All the mods in the world wont fix this sorry excuse of a game, save your time and money if you haven't already made the same mistake I did.

There are multiple PS4 titles out there which are far more deserving such as Dying Light, Bloodborne, Borderlands, Uncharted Collection and Last of Us to name a few, all of which I found very enjoyable but hey that's just me we all have our preferences. I cant really put into words how I feel about Fallout 4, its not what I thought it would be but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Literally no positives to mention, except the bobble-head figure I got for picking it up at midnight which looks cool.

    Yours sincerely,

    A heartbroken gamer :(

But I focus on story, quest design and RPG mechanics, and all of that is a pale shadow of what FNV especially did well. I thought Bethesda would learn from Obsidian (FNV), but they actually dumbed down even more than FO3. Wow. Honestly, I should have waited a few years and picked this up from the bargain bin. It's another nail in the coffin for me never pre-ordering/day-one buying again.. Expand

As with many other games, when you "simplify" and "streamline" games that were already wildly popular, you are basically dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator, and ignoring the fact the game was wildly popular before without having done so. What once was a great game is ruined. The fact you could kill almost anyone was a reflection of the make any choice feel to the game. Now, 90% of NPCs are invincible, but are able to remember your bad actions and kill you even after you have respawned from the fact they just killed you. No weapons are armor degradation. Boring repetitive dialogue wheel. I would rather have kept no voice for more depth of dialogue choices, outcomes, consequences, and funny responses. You could be whoever you wanted in the game, but of course with consequences. Now, besides your looks, every character is the same bland character at heart. Yes the previous fallout had general endings, but at least they were ranged based on what you've done and the kind of person you had been throughout the game. The things that made the game an enjoyable challenging, like actually have consequences and rewards to having certain special attributes, skills and perks, to weapons and armor degradation, to having to or choosing to alter your playstyle to fit your characters unique skill set and personality, was what made the game so immersive and made you feel as if you were a part of the game, telling your own story. I find the biggest irony to be that the game is rated mature but gutted out, dumbed down and simplified enough so that small children can follow along. The thrill of finally getting your hands on power armor midway or late in the game is quickly replaced by a deflated instant gratification of being in armor 20 minutes into the game. Yes the FPS elements are improved, the settlement idea is cool if that's your thing, and it makes the massive amount of random items more useful, but it also makes them potentially more annoying and tedious to collect. I could care less about the graphics, and even some of the bugs, if the story, choice and gameplay elements were as great as before. Bethesda failed to realize that the very same thing that allowed them to get away with what has turned out to be a massive hype train cash grab is exactly what they have abandoned. The overpriced McDonalds happy meal quality pip boy that needs a phone to work with the game, otherwise its a cheap fragile prop. The t shirts, the figurines, the collectors edition vault dwellers guide, etc., etc., etc. this game was so commercialized from the beginning I should have seen the quality coming. No I have nothing against Bethesda, well at least not up until now. I never played and elder scolls, skyrim, or mass effect. But apparently this is a common theme from understandably pissed repeat victims of Bethesda. As much as the COD sheep crowd and professional critic crowd want to dismiss us as unpleasable, stuck in the past "metacritic troll" curmudgeons, this game is a siginificant downgrade to the series. I also find the critique of saying its a remastered fallout 3 or a fallout 3 dlc to be too kind. Fallout 3 and IMO especially Fallout New Vegas, are superior in every way to fallout 4. The only way I will ever consider buying another fallout is if obsidian is put in charge of development again. Wasted money on a watered down disappointment, that sacrificed the awesome intricacies for superficial "mass appeal upgrades" like a voiced character and improved FPS elements. Sadly and ironically the game already had mass appeal without these horrid "tradeoffs" and now in my opinion, never will have the same hype. Franchises always do this. Ditch what made you an awesome game in order to have more mass appeal, but in the end never realizing that what you chose to ditch is exactly what gave you mass appeal. People don't buy franchise games because of how much they are exactly like other franchise games. They buy franchise games because they are their own unique game, yet they are similar to other games in the franchise, but with improvements, without detracting from or sacrificing old elements that made the game a thrill in the first place. If I want to see COD elements in every game, I will keep playing COD. If I want to see GTA in every game, I will keep playing GTA. If I want to see fallout elements in every game, well I guess I cant play FO4, I need to go back to new vegas or FO3. People don't buy different games to keep playing the same generic game with different studios and names plastered on front of the game. I thought I was buying fallout 4, not fallout of duty black ops. GOTY? no, more like disappointment of the year. Expand

Here's just a few of the details that ticked me off:

No room for strategy in fighting any more - it's all reaction-based trigger pulling

Characterisation is incredibly shallow now, dialogue is badly written and shallow, and there are very few actual choices you can make now.

You can't 'detect life' any more making play as a long-range sniper or at night pretty much useless.

They swore blind the FIV map was larger than F3 and FNV - this is a plain lie. The landscape is much smaller.

The crafting system, so vaunted, is not actually very sophisticated, it's just time-consuming and laborious. The 'settlement building' game is a frustrating and fiddly time sink.

...Oh, and I thought the Skyrim PS3 port to PC was a bad joke on PC users but the FIV port to PC is much, much worse.

    Very annoyed with this game.

The minute I saw this game trailer months ago I immediately knew I wasn't going to buy it. Why? Because it looked TERRIBLE graphically. YES! Terrible graphically! Call me spoiled but I expected much better in 2015. I love the Elder Scrolls (I've played Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and loved them all), one of the best fantasy franchises of all time, and I played both Fallout 3 and New Vegas and loved it;. In 2008. Bethesda dropped the ball big time and the only reason anyone would positively review the game is because they're in the first stage of grief: DENIAL.

"It's not that bad... the game I waited for 7 years for, couldn't possibly be this bad... well, it's buggy and looks terrible but, you know what? We can expect that? Graphics and bugs are normal in all Bethesda titles despite them being almost unique in this consistent output of crap. So what if graphics look like they're from 2007 when even small budget studios produce better product, quicker?"

"Oh, but graphics aren't the most important part of a game." Right, but they are important and in 2015 when 95% of other AAA games have perfect frame rates on spectacular graphics while this game is using a 10 year old Gamebryo engine, yeah, no, stop making excuses.

Again, this game would be great, as Fallout New Vegas was in 2008.

But this is 2015. And I went and played it on my friend's PS4. It looked AWFUL. Clumsy, the animations were off, and the gameplay wasn't fun, and it was completely NON-IMMERSIVE. The lip syncing was so bad it was almost like I was playing a bad joke. And then reused animations from Skyrim? The jerky animations done in 3D Studio Max? I played for four hours before just shutting it off. Then I played it again the next week, for another couple of hours and still couldn't forgive the graphics, so much so that the gameplay was just... blah. It didn't feel like it was a living breathing world at all.

Honestly, the only reason this game made almost a billion dollars was just clever marketing hype. And in saying that, I admit that the age of gaming is really over, forever. Now, the developers that you'd expect amazing content from are producing un-fun, watered down crap and then charging an arm and a leg for it. People say, "oh, the graphics aren't a big deal because of gameplay." Sure, but the gameplay isn't that good to overlook it. Want a game with amazing gameplay, with not so great graphics that was completely overlooked? Look at the Xenoblade Chronicles. One of the best games of all time. But if a game comes along with amazing graphics but has tiny issues with gameplay? These people are all over it with their criticism. But since they are Bethesda fanboys, they literally know no end to their hypocrisy in praising a game that looks like it is straight out of 2007, and plays like it is straight out of 2007.

Want a good game? Buy the Witcher 3. That game has the heart, the substance, the style and the love put into it that you would expect for a game in 2015. The Witcher 3 deserves the Game of the Year in 2015, and if Fallout 4 gets it, you know for a fact that the entire industry is corrupt, rigged and undermined by developers and blind fanboys alike. Hell, even Star Wars Battlefront, which itself isn't an amazing game by any leaps and bounds, looks better, runs better, plays better, and has more replayability over Fallout 4.

And for people making excuses like, this game just looks like crap on consoles as compared to PC. The PC reviews are even worse. Just go look on Metacritic for the PC reviews.

Just because a game is associated with a developer and IP that you like, doesn't mean you have to turn a switch off in your brain that allows you to make informed decisions. If this game were any other title, it would have been completely panned. But since the main character is wearing a blue and yellow jumpsuit, it becomes a 10/10? Seriously? Can't you people see what you're doing? You're willfully rigging the entire system in order for it to continue milking customers and depriving genuinely talented studios from surviving!

Lastly, people talking about "80 hours of gameplay". I've put in 260 hours with The Witcher 3 and just saw Uma's transformation last night. 260 hours! That's what you expect from a game worth $60!

I was more concerned about the core experience and it did not deliver in any way.
-Terrible UI, (Menus for Quests, Inventory, Stats, completely counter intuitive)
-Terrible Writing, (i didn't know it was possible to have no subtlety nor humor simultaneously)
-No options within story line, pick faction that's it (dialog options are superficial, you are told what to do)
-Map is slapped together carelessly(i.e. settlements of independent farmers adjacent raider and mutant camps, literally across the street from each other)
-Settlement scrapping, building, settlers, it's all pretty messy (it doesn't really belong in Fallout, is very unintuitive, and is little more than a set of chores if you decide to do it)
-Skill System is a huge step backwards(easily could have been improved in design stages)
-Weapons, armor, loot is lackluster(few unique skins, "legendary" items feel random)
-Voiced Protagonist is for unimaginative people who don't know how to/don't like to read

I don't want to bash Bethesda. Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim are all past favorites of mine, but this doesn't feel like it's from the same developer and needs the criticism. Though games like Skyrim might get away with it, due to the richness of the setting, Fallout 4 falls short, and fast, into a futile repetitive exercise of killing, fetching and modding with no discernible meaning nor deep objective, the Fallout setting just seems coincidental to this.

Bethesda does not yet understand, that what made Fallout a great franchise was it's capacity of turning the setting into a story. Instead of just putting content for the sake of it, when developing, the priority should be on exploring the relations of power between communities that have survived, and get aspects, social, economical, even philosophical into the game, that's the way you create immersion. But with this game everything remains on the surface, there is no deep engagement, only inconsequential actions and a less than engaging main plot.

I'm sick of bugs forcing constant restarts and then 5 minutes loading screens. I fill like this point I have replayed half the game.

WTF did they do the Fallout franchise? Everything combat, dialogue is pointless, mystery, and usually painful just to play through.

Settlements system is redundant and it's interface is counter-intuitive.

The only saving grace of the game is the amount of artistically well done content and sound. In the absence of other high profile RPGs around, this game can take your next 100-200 hours easily to discover everything.

Bottomline - hard to recommend buying it in the post Witcher 3 world, but if you're already done with it and have spare 60 bucks - why not.

Some of the serious bugs and glitches are now game-breakingly annoying with the new Survival Mode.

    Long Version:
The new Survival Mode checkpoint saving (beds only) PLUS a buggy game EQUALS 0 score.

Why 0? Because the game is broken in my eyes, no matter how large it is, no matter how many features it has, and so on. If I'm being punished for their bugs, the game is broken.
    • I refuse to repeatedly replay half-hour survival runs that I got right, because of their poor programming.
    • I refuse to play on a lower difficulty. It's too easy as it is.
    • I refuse to constantly find checkpoint-beds to work around the bugs and flaws, because it also means having to replay parts of the game that I got right.

1)Watching bodies / loot disappear before I can grab the loot feels like an excercise in epic trolling.
    2) Having my settlers suddenly start stealing from both workshops and containers is not a game feature. It is a design flaw or bug that feels like an exercise in epic trolling.
    3) If a game feature (building/settlements/settlers) is implemented so poorly that the players have to talk to each other to find ridiculous work-arounds, the game is broken.

I don't care that the game is an A for art design and map design.
Make a game that's half as big, with half as many features, and get it right.

Having now finished the game I feel compelled to amend my initially favourable review. I am/was a massive fan of the Fallout/Elder Scrolls series however I feel completely disappointed and even cheated by Fallout 4.

I can live with PS3 re-mastered graphics, and even the odd glitch here and there (I didn’t run into anything too significant in my 70 hour play through). However what has ruined the entire game for me was the complete an utter lack of originality, and criminally repetitive missions.

90% of the time you are sent from point A to B, you will clear out 15-20 Raiders, Feral’s or Super Mutants collect something then return to point A. I soldiered through it, but quite frankly I was so bored after a while I just powered through the main storyline so I could start playing MGS5.

I do not know anything about the development process, but to me it feels like a game that has been thrown together for maximum profit with a few cosmetic upgrades, a change of scenery but zero innovation, originality or thought to the repetitive nature of open world missions.

My true score would be something in the region of 4 or 5 out of 10, but given the resentment I feel to this cash in I'm giving a zero in hope that they may actually try next time.

    What about Fallout 4?
It's even worse. Although it made some fine improvements over the basic gameplay mechanics and doesn't play like an indie tech demo any more it went the entirely wrong direction.
Now It's basicaly shooter with crafting. Story is typical Bethesda's **** Dialogue system is a disaster and makes RPG'ing impossible. Autistic leveling system that removed all the skills from SPECIAL system. Game feels extremely "safe" in it's design. it brings no emitions, has no depth, it's not the dark fallout world we loved and appriciated years ago.

Being a Philosophy major, I'll help people understand the problems here. Fallout 4 is not a good game because it was created not with the content or art of the game in mind but the money. There is evidence to show, and in fact business/accounting majors are taught this phenomenon that happens globally, that when money becomes a reward for doing an action, intellectual involvement decreases as well as detail oriented work and consideration decreases. This corresponds to the game in that this was an anticipated blockbuster hit. Because the money came first probably since the marketing team oversees many projects within a company, the game lost what would have made it a "True" fallout game like that of New Vegas and 3. Intuitively, this is easy to see from the marketer's perspective, "Do I pay this story writer three times more than I do now for a good story in this game and get payed less or do I just make sure the bells and whistles work long enough to make more money and cut out a story?" Simple answer, the marketer is taught how to make money. Don't expect a mathematician to work with artists about how to make art theory more rigorous. Don't expect a theologian to try to give arguments against the existence of God. Don't expect the marketer to worry about the aesthetic value of Fallout 4 in dealing with choice, determinism, literature, story, and experience. He worries about cash. Extend this to other games. Call of Duty franchise after CoD4, League of Legends with not well thought-out champions, World of Warcraft after Wrath of Lich King with bland armor designs, dumbed down lore, etc... Bethesda will learn that people didn't come to see cheap county art fair drawings. We came to see the next piece of art that guides the gaming community and creators. Money is easily forgotten, but destruction of reputation is a deep scar. Let this be a lesson for any company that thinks a marketer can do better than a chef, musician, programmer, engineer, scientist, painter, mathematician, or a philosopher. Leave those arts to their masters, not a person looking to make a profit off of it.

    Sincerely,
    A gamer.

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
