For example, to be able to kill every character, even if this effectively ends the main questline, the option still needs to be there. Also needs the option of hardcore mode (which surely would not be too hard to put in given the attention to detail in other areas), also other simple options like your dog being able to die (again surely not hard to implement). I'm nowhere near the end yet but if there are no different settlement endings I will be disappointed by this, though I understand what Bethesda are trying to do by having the game run on past the main ending, but again there needs to be an option. I also miss traits, they were valuable to roleplaying. And I don't mind the new perk system, but how hard would it have been to put some SPECIAL stat related options into the dialogue as well, those were some of the best parts about new Vegas.

Despite these gripes, I do love the game, and I have played all the other fallouts as they were released barring the first. If this were just a little more like new Vegas it could be a 9 or 10, particularly with the new features. I just hope Bethesda listens to their fans and adds in the options for these small changes, it would go a long way towards mollifying long term fans of the series. I truly believe Bethesda is passionate about the fallout universe and I hope to see more from them, but please Bethesda, if anyone from your offices is reading this, please just listen to your fans and keep up the (almost) excellent work.

Just give me my options back!

I have no idea how people are rating this game so poorly. That is not to say I didn't have a few disappointments, but just because something is different it doesn't make it bad. If you want a RPG like the Witcher 3, go play NG+ on it. For me, Fallout 4 seems like a fresh start and new approach to what Fallout games will be like on the new generation of systems.

    The Good:
Crafting: Customizing weapons, armor, buildings, and battle armor add a layer to the game that is exciting. Instead of hoping you come across an overpowered plasma rifle mid game, you can now build your own damage dealing death machines. You want your armor to look different and distinguish you? Go make some new pieces. You would like to build your own wasteland paradise? Now you can. You bored of your old T60 power armor? Give it a paint job and some more powerful add-ons. +++

Scavenging: Nothing was more disappointing then wasting a good amount of bobby pins on a lock in Fallout 3 and NV to get into a room with only Pre-War Money and Wonderglue. Now, because of the crafting system, I am stoked as hell to find cameras, duct tape, glue, and other pieces of junk. Scavenging now is important, and varies the loot to the point where you care about more than caps and ammo. +++

Atmosphere: The Commonwealth is alive and busy. The landscape varies (opposed to the blasted deserts of F# and FNV. When you get to the large city, it feels alive and full (I was very disappointed with New Vegas when I got there). The changes in weather besides night and day add a wonderful feel. +++

    Contentious:
Graphics: Yes, not the best. However, I don't mind them as much as many other folks. It is easy to forget how few loading screens there are when you are wandering around the commonwealth. A map that large is going to take up a chunk of the memory. I would rather have a larger open world then a smaller one with better graphics. ++/-

    Dialogue:
Options are very limited, and often very simplistic, with truly only 3 choices to every interaction. I do not mind this as much as other folks because there is a richer amount of dialogue in general. The companions also make interesting comments as you wander the wastes, which is refreshing. +/-

    The Bad:
Stat System: Truly the only part of the game in which I was disappointed. Your SPECIALS seem particularly useless unless used to get to higher level perks. You no longer have skills / skill points, which is an interesting twist. Navigating the perks for your build is difficult, and some seem necessary to truly enjoy the game to its full extent, while not seeming important otherwise. -

Overall: It is a great game, it is fun, engaging, and different. People on Metacritic are comparing it to the Witcher 3, which is a total mistake. It is well known that the Witcher 3 set the bar for Next Gen games, but just because the Royals won the World Series doesn't mean the Mets are a **** team. Enjoy the game for what it is, temper your expectations of what you think it should be, and you may be surprised and just how enjoyable and exciting exploring the Commonwealth can be.

10/10 because I made a chick character and she is freaking cute as f*** in her hard hat.

Sucks that you can't jimmy the broken weapons together but instead have to carry around like 10 shotguns instead of say 2 that are at full health. It's hard to drop those 10 shotguns/weapons since I am used to hoarding them and using them to fix my damaged ones. Bit laggy when a lot of **** goes

Bit laggy when a lot of **** goes down but I find the game pretty smooth in most cases.

To me it does have the Fallout feel/experience that other people seem to say it is missing. I feel as though the combat is similar to F3 as are most things in the game. I never finished F3 but I got a damn long way through it. I feel as though this will be the one that I finish.

If you want a big game with crafting of settlements/camps/weapons/armour and the ability to shoot/stab/whack/blow up your enemies then this is for you. Not to mention the skill tree is farking massive and the abilities you get with the levels/perks are pretty epic.

Actual score is 8/10 now that I've calmed down about the cuteness of my character.

For a 10 I would need a few of the old things back from F3, and the drop in framerate sometimes during a bit of heavy combat, etc takes away from the immersive experience that I should have. Also the beginning of the game focuses on your kid being kidnapped, but then you have a buttfkload of unrelated quests that take your time away from finding your kid. You realise that your baby is actually 10 yrs old because you were frozen for another 10 years after your kid was robbed from you, then you waste another 10 years on these damn side quests whilst complaining about how you need to find your kid ASAP. WHY AM I CLEARING BUILDINGS FOR QUESTS DEN? Mek no sense.

i just created this metacritic account just to write a short review for this game bc some of these reviews on here are ridiculous. im referring to every single one that rates this game under a five. I will agree with almost everything they say in their reviews to a certain extent but it in no way justifies a 0 score. the game isnt completely broken as that kind of score would imply. Ii just created this metacritic account just to write a short review for this game bc some of these reviews on here are ridiculous. im referring to every single one that rates this game under a five. I will agree with almost everything they say in their reviews to a certain extent but it in no way justifies a 0 score. the game isnt completely broken as that kind of score would imply. I myself have been thoroughly enjoying this game and would recommend buying it if you enjoy these types of games. my only complaints are the abysmal framerate drops that will hopefully be addressed in future updates and the underwhelming dialogue system that has been dumbed down significantly from previous games. as far as graphics and animations go i give it a pass. The only real improvement over previous entries is a little more detail in textures and of course the 1080p update. The only wow factor that makes the graphics pop for me personally is the lighting effects. I noticed nobody mentioned the absence of an in game brightness adjustment option as well but i believe this shouldnt present a problem if your tv is properly calibrated although i do believe the option should be included. I really cant recall any game ive ever played not having one so i just found it odd and worth mentioning. All this considered though i must say is bethesda really known for eye popping amazing looking games? No so theres really no let down there for me. As far as the voice acting goes it is far superior to all other fallout/elders scrolls games in every way. For me the UI isnt a problem at all once you get used to it and if anyone complaining about it has a better idea on how to handle inventory management in the game then i would love to hear their bright ideas. for me its a non issue other than the fact that theres so many cool items in the game that im always overencumbered bc i wanna horde it all. The perks system does take some getting used to at first but is it better or worse than it used to be? Not at all just different. The only upside is its alot easier on the eyes with its charming little comic strip look. Oh yeah and i was being sarcastic earlier when i said "short review " sorry bout that. Started rambling a bit lol. All things said i myself personally have been having alot of fun with this game and get lost in its immersive post apocalyptic world for hours on end just as i did in all the previous titles set in this universe. I believe that if others could get over the initial disappointment caused by all the over hyping that they would as well bc there is a wealth of content to be had in this game. So please read as many positive reviews as you do negative and do some more research on other platforms other than metacritic also before you make a decision and miss out on a great game. Expand

I realize the dialogue system has been very watered down, and sometimes you don't even know what your character is going to say when you choose what to say. I agree that that aspect of the game was completely botched in Fallout 4.

I also realize that the new "workshop"aspect of the game that allows you to build communities, build structures, assign jobs, create supply lines, and create defenses is kind of pointless ultimately. It's just sort of there and sometimes the game's story even makes you develop these communities to advance the plot.

I also agree that the main storylines and the side quests are probably the weakest of the three open-world, first/third person Fallout games thus far.

BUT, but but but but but...

...To me this is still a good Fallout game. I feel like the shooting mechanics are the best they've ever been in the series. The slow-motion version of V.A.T.S. is even cooler than the version in F3, and F:NV.

The graphics are as good as they've ever been. For example, you can actually see the trees bending in the wind, there are radiation storms, and other subtle touches that make the world seem more "alive" in Fallout 4 compared to previous games. Also, unlike Fallout 3 or New Vegas, there is a dialogue camera that makes the conversations your character has seem a bit more.....dynamic.

It's a great game as far as I'm concerned. It's probably tied with The Witcher 3 as my favorite Ps4 game. I'll admit I'm totally biased when I give it a 9, but something about roaming the wastes in these games really appeals to me.

I like the solitude and I like having it shattered frequently.

Sticking to the missions can get a bit boring, the menus are somewhat confusing and the conversation choices don't seem to make much difference, but freeroaming around the wide open world and killing whatever crosses your path is so much fun! Especially if you are using the mods to craft better weapons and an armored suit, you are set to go and cause some mayhem oh yeah!

In the age of score bombing, aggregate user scores just become a giant tug of war, hence why I find it important to write a review.

First I want to address the hate this game has received and then talk about the game itself. People need to understand what "hype" does to expectations. Fallout is far from the only one to suffer from enormous hype, and it won't be the last. No game will ever live up to the hype. Some of people's favorite games as of late have come from new or previously unknown IP's that had very little hype surrounding them. While it may not be helped by the game developers and publishers, this is largely a monster of our own creation and kills enjoyment. Hype creates unreal expectations that cannot be met.

Secondly, I am ashamed by the actions of a large portion of the Fallout fan base. It is all well and good to dislike an entry in the series and to state it, and vote with your wallet. It is another entirely to troll and spew filth and bile onto anyone that even tries to express their like of this game. Seriously, the way people react borders on religious zealotry, and the great Todd Howard & Co. has desecrated what is apparently most sacred. It's a game people, and an insufficient reason to insult and demonize those who don't agree or who genuinely enjoy the game.

Third, to those that decry F4 for not being as groundbreaking as F3- what exactly was the expectation? To jack into the PS4 matrix style? Of course F3 was revolutionary compared to F2. You went from a dated, clunky isometric style game to a modern, engaging, cinematic first or third person shooter that kept the world and atmosphere from the original games. That was and is Bethesda's bread and butter, so why was there an expectation of a revolutionary F4? A more realistic outlook would recognize that evolutionary steps make more sense if the game formula already works.

Fourth, I would like to address the "good game, bad Fallout game" critique. It is one that is entirely subjective, because what may have attracted one to the series is not what attracted another. Therefore it is as valid as all other subjective qualities e.g. the music, ambiance, color palette. It all comes down to the crux of the whole issue which I will discuss in the game critique.

F4 is a game that was not afraid to do something new. It changed many, many things from its predecessors, many of which I would argue were great improvements, and some that were metaphorical "steps back". Overall, the changes implemented contribute to a fun, replayable game, albeit with shortcomings.

Graphically the game is, of course, better than any other Fallout. Compared to some of the best looking games of the past few years, it cannot compete. However, within fellow large open world games, it is above average. The real pitfalls appear to be textures and some of the lip-syncing and facial animations. In most cases they are merely "meh" but in fewer instances it is outright bad (like the texture on Virgi's mutant body). F4 suffered serious frame rate drops in city areas due to issues with shadowing. Patches have since fixed the issue and overall stability is lightyears ahead of previous games. My F3 and to a lesser extent my FNV games have reached a point of saturation that they stutter, freeze and crash to the point that it is barely playable. In contrast, in all of my playthroughs of F4, it has crashed 4 times and frozen for 4-5 seconds a dozen or so times. Speaking only for Playstation, this is hands down the most stable and least glitchy Fallout game to date.

Far too many changes were made to list and many of them were relatively minor, but solid changes. There are some instances of retconing, some of which seemed like simple oversight and others were changes made to improve game play. Just some solid examples of great changes are the armor and weapon crafting which is the most in depth to date, the appearance, function and customization of power armor and the vastly better combat.

The main story held me engaged and wanting to know what happens next, which is a good indication of a solid story. Side quests were numerous with some very memorable ones.

Some of the big and controversial changes have to do with the reduction of RPG elements in the game. It has become more of an open world game, that is undeniable. It is disingenuous to say that it has no RPG elements however. This is the crux of many issues, because for many Fallout is synonymous with RPG. That's why they see Fallout as losing a core part of itself and the rest is history. I am not a hardcore RPG'er, I do not create elaborate backstories and don't think the only way to build a character is with a point system. I enjoy exploration, replay ability, fun, engaging and humorous encounters that convey a complex story. All this in the F4's unique world and atmosphere is what makes a game "Fallout" to me.

If you're like me, F4 will be a fantastic game.

I don't understand so many negative reviews, I don't rush the story on any fallout games, I mostly like to trek the world that Bethesda make and never use fast travel, and through out my Journey in fallout 4 something always happens, previous entries were quite barren and monochromatic, Fallout 4 adds a bit more juiciness to their universe, with different hues, many and many and many! locations to explore, and let me not begin to mention the settlement building, your life will be sucked, don't have a wife, or a girlfriend.

The BAD: Oh yeah there are a few, now I haven't finished the game yet, but so far Not the biggest of the dialogue system, it feels at times inconsistent, also not knowing what your character is going to say is a bit annoying. sometimes this breaks immersion for me, seeing that these characters are just code, and not actual humans. The story isn't that bad, I actually enjoy it more than 3, fallout 4 hits some high points in its story, no spoilers, but their is one character who cant be recruited as a companion, but had a way more interesting background than all your companions combined and the story highlights that. so much I believe there should a. New Vegas style fallout game staring this character.

all and all, Its fallout, more on the shooty shooty side, but it's still fallout non the less, and to add another note, I have other triple A titles but I keep coming back to this game wasting vast amounts of time.

    - Completed quests are listed in order of completion, making it basically impossible to sort through them if trying to finish every quest in the game. It would be MUCH better if the were listed alphabetically or aragangable in some way.
    - Linear dialog, no paths to choose.

I had heard a lot about this game, good and bad, but had not played any of the previous Fallout games and, as a result, was heading into the game totally fresh. I had heard a lot about this game, good and bad, but had not played any of the previous Fallout games and, as a result, was heading into the game totally fresh. I do believe a lot of the negative scores for this game are related to unmet expectations developed from previous experiences of the franchise. This is a Fallout 4 review from a Fallout novice.

We'll start with the positives - the game, to me, looks fantastic. Grim, post-apocalyptic world, huge range of enemies, and all of it retaining the atmosphere of a post-nuclear future. I honestly think the game looks great - some have said its textures are repetitive, which may be true, but I can see why that's necessary in a game of this type.

The gameplay itself is good - as challenging as you want it to be, lots to do and explore and build up and improve, it really is expansive and you can lose hours of your days in this game - I've lost 40 already and have barely done any of the missions, I've just romped around the map exploring. The combat can get a little repetitive as, while the locations change, the battles are often similar be they 'bosses' or regular enemies. This can become an issue but on the whole I've really enjoyed it.

The missions are something I cannot really comment on as I haven't really focused on doing them - whether this makes the experience better or worse is utterly dependent on the individual player but, for me at least, it feels more authentic to just explore, meet people and respond to the situation at hand. This might not be a sentiment echoed by others and, for those who enjoy a heavy reliance on narrative built through missions, I can see how the game may not cut the mustard. For me it's been enjoyable just to explore and interact and understand the world - this might not be the same for others (especially those who have played previous editions of the game).

To sum up the positives for me I love the exploration, the range of enemies and locations, the size of the map and basically most elements of the game - I have had fun, which is why I play games.

The negatives, the things which stop this game being a 10, boil down to a few things. Frame rate issues will occur on the PS4 and these can be annoying. For me it is not a big deal but these can be huge deal-breakers for others - it depends how these affect your perception of the game personally. The few missions I have done have been very, very similar which doe snot bode well for the multitude of missions I have yet to complete. I think this is where a lot of criticism has come in - for me I have simply not followed the conventional narrative and have enjoyed myself, maybe how you play the game affects your enjoyment? The characters have been decent but certainly lack a bit of background - of the ones I have met there never seems to be enough background to become really invested in them. This is again a big issue is character development is central to your enjoyment and experience of games - for me it is a bonus rather than a key element.

I understand the negative reviews - if you have never played the franchise before I would definitely say play the game. If you have then you'll maybe have to read other reviews and decide whether or not to take the plunge. I did get this game with a discount of 60% due to special offers via PS+ and, at that price, I really think there can be no complaints.

This is an honest review from an honestly ardent Bethesda Softworks and Fallout franchise "fanboy" (for want of a more fitting term). I have played Fallout 4 for a combined total of approximately ten days, spread across 2 'characters' both on the PS4.

I'm too busy playing it to describe my experience. I give Fallout 4.......... 9/10.

Very nice game, i really really like it.
The story is not soooo good but acceptable, nothing wrong to deal with.

The characters are good but not so much because they do not get so involved with them, they are many and this does not allow you to take a fondness for one in particular. In my opinion, Hancock seemed fantastic.

Fallout 4 is one of the best action role-playing-games I have played. Action games typically rely on hand-eye coordination of the player usually having them control a character/avatar focusing on winning, which could be in shooters or other types of games that need good reaction times of the player. Fallout 4 has the shooter type gameplay and melee forms of combat, which is very similar to many other games that are part of this genre. The player can collect guns and other weapons and fights of monsters, wild animals, and other people that are all around the map, which somewhat differentiates itself from other games where the weapons are already predetermined by the game instead of the player actively choosing which ones to use. The player can also customize their own character, as is able to do almost anything they want in exploring the open world, with many quests available and a good story to follow, traits of a well made role-playing-game.
This game comes from a series well established as one of the best adventure role-playing games. It kept the SPECIAL character sheet which was first introduced with the first Fallout game, and moved on from the original having only 2D graphics to now 3D graphics, first being introduced in Fallout 3. Bethesda Game Studios kept improving upon the game after release with six major updates/DLC, as well as added support for mods to be implemented in the game. Fallout 4 changed some aspects of its game compared to previous games in the series like 3 and New Vegas. It added a new equipment system that took off the constant need for maintenance which was prevalent in previous titles.
The graphics of the game are much more better than the graphics from previous Fallout titles like Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. The use of dark colors, which brings in a gloomy feeling when playing the game, was continued in the series which was very prevalent in previous titles.. This gloomy feeling may not be present for the entire map since players can make their own creations with more color in areas called settlements. The game has opening music when loading up save points, and also plays suspenseful music when the player gets into combat or discovers a new location. There is spoken dialogue in the game, so the player doesn't have to read from the screen, with an estimated 111,000 lines of recorded dialogue.
The games graphics and feel comes from cultural aspects of the United States in the 1950’s. It was an era of the start of the Cold War, with fear of nuclear war which the game picks up, although the game does have a significant difference to history on how the power of nuclear energy was used at first (in the game it was used to power innovation instead of war/bombs in the beginning). It affected the way the houses looked, buildings, computers, even though they were all technologically advanced, it still had the feel of the 50’s. The game has also affected gaming culture and pop culture, with people dressing up as their favorite characters from the game to attend events, but also wider areas like how violent games affect people.
The game starts off with a cutscene from World War 2, and tells of how different to what actually happened in real life, people started using nuclear energy to benefit society, but that resources were low and the world is coming to a breaking point at the present, which is where the character the user plays enters. The user gets to choose the sex, characteristics, and traits of the playable character, and after is allowed to walk around in the house in what seems to be a peaceful neighborhood. But soon after, the user is made aware of the upcoming apocalypse and ends up deep underground for safety, only to be frozen for over 200 years to later emerge upon the wasteland to explore. There are different factions in the game and the player can choose to join all of them but may end up turning against other factions once the player gets far enough in the story.
Fallout 4 was released to be an entertaining game with little focus on the serious aspect of what it could become. Though there are some characteristics that could be seen as serious with some similarities to political games and game for change. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland after the superpowers of the world led and all out war which ended with the use of atomic bombs annihilating most of humanity and creating dangerous creatures. The game presents the player with the effects of war and countries fighting over resources instead of helping each other for the benefit of humanity. It sets a sense of warning for the player, in what the world could become if the greed of people for control and power remains uncontrolled, so it may be used as a way for people to advocate control of dangerous weapons and more friendly measures between countries to settle disputes.

You have your choices, you have your freedom, you have your farming choices and YOU are FREE to choose your character, their face, their build, whether thicc or slicc, muscular and beautiful, and etcetera, etcetera. There are literally way too many body and face combinations. Bam, nuke goes down like hell. You can go FREE mode and do some experiments and just laze, or, try to destroy the Institute! This is literally the best of the Fallout franchise. I just can't get enough of it. You can be a criminal or a police guarding DC, be an explorer, or be a steely member of the BoS! Ok, let's start. Firstly, you can BUILD. Unlike any other Fallout game, you can BUILD! Building things is the first clue to know that this is open world. You can go outside Boston, Kick some ass with a Mini Nuke, and kick back and drink a Nuka Cola. You can also go wherever you want. Even better, it covers, so many genres. Action. Adventure. Horror. Building. Sandbox. There are just so many. So, think of this as a real gift from Bethesda! You can just level and level, and level, and become the most badass survivalist in the Wasteland. Hate or Nora, there are truly no limits except for your imagination. Expand

But in terms of what this specific game offers, I think it does it pretty well. I have a lot of different playthroughs with different playstyles and story choices.
The add-ons really add a lot of depth to the story. I do wish they could be more thoroughly integrated into the main map instead of being totally separate locations.
Mainly, after playing it for so long, I'm roughly 98% sure that the main character is supposed to be a synth. It's definitely more interesting to think of it this way when you realize just how advanced technology is becoming in contrast to the wasteland that still exists.
Overall, the story itself is ambiguous enough to be interesting, though the dialogue can occasionally be more engaging than it is.
The settlement building isn't bad, but I feel like it breaks the gameplay flow a little bit to be so focused on junk.
Overall, I had a lot of fun sinking into this character, especially in Survival mode. If you play this, you must play it on Survival mode! It makes the role-playing aspect much more engaging as you need to eat, drink, and sleep, you can get ill, and ammo has weight so you have to be strategic with what you carry. It's honestly fun to be scared of half the creatures at low levels.
I definitely recommend this, though it may not be for everyone. But I'm enjoying my no-VATS, anti-factions playthrough...
P.S. The lore is still great if you pay attention to details.

Fallout 4 is divisive among fans, and I can understand why. While the story is interesting enough, the dialogue suffers due to the flat performance of the protagonist's voice actor (I played as a male, not sure about female performance) and the lack of depth to conversation options. The game effectively tries to be Mass Effect and it isn't very good at it. Fallout 3 seemed to have a conversation option for every kind of player in every kind of situation. Fallout 4 gives vague commands that result in the protagonist saying things that you never intended for them to say. These commands are are basically always the same: Positive response, negative response, sarcastic response, or request more info. The quality of conversation suffers as a result.

Fallout 4 also eschews some of the traditional mechanics of the series. Gone is the karma system, stat allocation, and equipment degradation of previous titles. While I enjoyed the new perk tree system and didn't really miss the karma factor, I was disappointed that repairing equipment was removed. In a post-apocalyptic game with a focus on crafting and scavenging, this seemed like a no-brainer, as it really adds a level of depth to the immersion. I would have at least appreciated an option to turn it on or off.

Settlements are another huge new addition to the series, but the system has a lukewarm implementation. It's truly addictive to upgrade a settlement and watch it grow. I've spent much more time on settlements than I ever thought I would. However, the system makes demands of the player a la The Sims. You seemingly are always being tasked to go build a new one, although you are free to ignore these quests if you like. The trouble comes from your need to manage the resources and happiness of each settlement, which can be annoying. More so is the fact that any settlement can come under attack at any time, and if you don't respond in a timely manner, the settlement suffers damage and the happiness of the inhabitants goes down. You may be on an important quest halfway across the map, unwilling or unable to simply drop what you're doing to help. More importantly, defense rating is a factor. Why did I build 10 turrets for a tiny farm if they can't old off a gang of half a dozen raiders? It makes no sense.

These are the largest criticisms I've seen leveled at the game, and they're all valid. However, I don't think they detract enough from the experience to stop it from being good. The rest of the game is pure Fallout. You wander off into a huge wasteland loaded with a nearly endless amount of places to see, characters to meet, quests to undertake, items to scavenge, and fun to be had. The tried and true Bethesda method of having something new and exciting every 5 feet to distract you from what you were previously doing remains strong in Fallout 4. This is a game that's very easy to get lost in.

Improvements have also been made to combat and weapon customization. While it doesn't handle nearly as smoothly as a Call of Duty game, Fallout 4 has solid shooting mechanics that allow you to play it more like an FPS if you want to. A lot of my experience with the game was playing it like a shooter and only utilizing VATS (the series' famous targeting menu) when I needed it. Weapons also allow for a variety of customization options and although many of the upgrades feel same-y after a while, it still allows for diversity and progression in your arsenal, especially when you get into special weapons with unique perks.

Scavenging and crafting are also a key focal point of the game, and thanks to the upgrade system, new approach to power armor, and settlement building, almost everything you collect will end up being useful in some form. Sometimes the most significant thing you'll find in a location isn't a new weapon or armor piece, but a hefty supply of a specific material you desperately need. For me, scavenging became a meticulous and addictive process that provided a meaningful feedback loop.

Fallout 4's graphics have been criticized, but I never understood why. I never expected Uncharted levels of quality, and given the appearance of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the visuals here are a significant upgrade, in my opinion.

While I don't enjoy Fallout 4 quite as much as I did Fallout 3, I still think it's a great game that's provided me with a ton of genuine enjoyment. What it gets wrong isn't enough to take away from what it does right. After all, Dogmeat can't die in this one, and that's worth something. If you liked the previous games, you may feel like there's a few things missing from this one, but I'm willing to wager that you'll still have a great time wandering the wasteland of Boston

Fallout 4 has been given a "settlement creation" ability which gives the game near endless gameplay.

Fallout 4's story is high and low point. The base story is actually quite good, most of the factions you can join are great but there's no roleplaying to be had here. You are given four options to choose from vs past games near limitless choices.
Want to be a villain? Nope! If you want that you'll have to pick up a dlc.

Another major complaint I have is they re-used Fallout 3's radio music and the new DJ is awful.
I do have to note turning off the music and listening to the new ambient soundtrack is amazing.

    3. Fun character perks and weapon/armor customization. You can build a character based on your play style. I went for a stealth-ninja-rifleman build. Had the most fun with suppressed snipers, rifles, shotguns, etc.

    4. Engaging main story. I used this as an anchor for my gameplay, instead of exploring aimlessly. I'll typically start a main questline and then branch out to sidequests along the way coupled with exploring whatever catches my eye.

    5. Unique cities/towns/settlements with vibrant communities, begging to be explored.

    6. Uncluttered user interface. No intrusive icons on screen to break immersion.

    7. Beautiful art direction and music.

    Cons:
    1. Awful, absolutely awful character models. Time for a new engine Bethesda.

    2. Hacking computer terminals caused my blood pressure to go up the roof! Change the hacking system please for Fallout 5.

    3. Repeated quests that's just there for filler and XP. At least indicate to us that these quests are inexhaustible. Early in the game, I kept doing the Cleanse the Commonwealth side-sidequest thinking it will end but it didn't! What a waste of time. They have these kinds of inane quest types for each faction. Cut this out Bethesda, go for quality not quantity next time.

    4. Poor companion AI. Will always block your way in the doorway, detected when you're trying to sneak, and come on screen during dialog.

    5. Too many loading screens.

    6. Poor dialog options.

    7. Settlement building. Although to be fair, you can ignore this completely. What I hated though was that you'll be prompted to defend your settlements in the middle of a main quest, etc which is annoying.

All in all, I enjoyed Fallout 4 immensely, and found myself devoting my game time solely for this for a good one month. Very immersive and compelling game. If you like games like Witcher 3, Borderlands, Far Cry 3/4, Skyrim, Deus Ex, then you'll definitely love the Fallout universe.

With Nick, Piper, Deacon, John Hancock and Kellgog we got great backstories. I can relate to these characters and feel compassion for them. This is for me a sign for good character creation. Also the factions and their leaders are magnificent. While I don't like some aspects I can at least see where they come from (except maybe one I wont spoil). Again you must chose a fraction at a late point in the game like in New Vegas. The sidequests are also a strength with the Silver Shroud quest-line as my favorite while many others that are also remarkable like Nicks Detective cases, The secret of the Cabot house and Last voyage of the USS Constitution as close second. Some go hand in hand with the dark humor of the Fallout series. There is one dialog where a still working security robot wants you to identify yourself. You can respond with insults to a humorous result. I am in the minority here but I like the crafting, construction elements and settlements. The controls work well or lets say as in all new Fallout games. I am really satisfied with the game. Now to the parts I dislike. The bugs are (slightly) more numerous than in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The new level up system is a hit and miss. While I like that I can potentially learn everything part of the fun in previous games was to create your own build and style. Some fan favorite abilities got removed. I hate that Preston always have uninteresting random quests. I would have liked the character but each time I get near him I have to save a settler from stupidity. I defended all settlements in a way that nothing should harm them and they have enough of everything there but they always find a way to get captured or lost. The power armor is now useless for me. There is no tread serious enough for me to waste fusion cores. Overall this is a bit different but a true Fallout game or experience. I enjoyed it and will give 8/10. Fallout New Vegas in the ultimate / game of the year edition is still better. Expand

Fallout 4 is a massive game, it's really enjoyable and will take you several hours to complete. However it has an iffy rpg element, and which makes you feel that their is less choices than previous fallout games. Howevr, the game is really enjoyable.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for Bethesda. I love their games and the freedom their games give the players, which is no different from Fallout 4. I have spent WAY too much time on this game, but I enjoyed all the little things as much as the big things.

A truly great achievement in gaming and an amazing immersive experience that has its downfalls with various bugs and freezing on the PS4, as well as long load times that can take you out of your immersion while playing the game. The biggest thing going for this game is the amount of content. One of the few games nowadays that actually gives you enough content to justify 60 bucks.

This was my first Fallout game, and i didn't had big expectations. But it was really a surprise to play this. The atmosphere feels so genuine, the story is interesting and it keeps you wanting to uncover more and more of the story.

Bad things, I don’t think there is anything particularly bad about this game other than the usual in Bethesda. This is, first, quite a few bugs in the game, mostly minor bugs but some relatively mayor ;e.g. a companion getting lost and not having a clue of where he/she is, they usually end up showing up again at some point but still annoying. Second, and not less important, a.i. is awful both for enemies and companions. It is especially frustrating with companions, mainly because they get stuck in stuff constantly so you find yourself looking over your shoulder quite often just to make sure they’re actually still there. Other stuff; some people say the game is too easy or too hard, well… I don’t think they’re right about this. In my opinion, this is one of the few games out there where you can actually choose a level of difficulty that suits you, from easy which is really easy to survival (which is very challenging, no fast travel, having to eat and drink etc.). Finally, although not a massive deal, I feel the loss of the karma system has damaged the game a bit; I quite liked having a reputation in the game based on the karma thing. It is true that if you go guns blazing in a settlement they’ll be hostile and that is it, so there is still some consequences to bad actions but not nearly as significant as in F3 or other games in general. A good example of why a miss the karma system is companions (yes, again); there’s quite a few companions for you to choose; some are more good than bad and vice versa (ethically speaking). The thing is, I can go and choose a “good karma” companion and do good stuff (help people, avoid violence etc.) so he/she likes me and get all the dialogues and stuff, right after I finish with that companion I can go and choose a “bad karma” one a start doing bad stuff (steal, easy trigger guy etc.) and it is equally easy to get all his lines of dialogue etc. since he does not have any kind of prejudice towards me because I have no reputation (i.e. karma system) so the A.I basically does not see you as having a personality unless it is something serious enough for it to get hostile (as in attacking them or stuff). So basically, you can switch between being a saint and being a damn bastard and it’s fine, as long as you don’t cross a few lines, being this mainly killing or stealing too much. This, in my opinion does not make sense.

Other good things, pretty much everything else, the game is beautiful to see and hear, gameplay is pretty much the same as in F3 so it is good fun. The thing that I though was particularly good in this one was the story, very good story with different factions and some charismatic secondary characters. The story is what made me like F4 more than F3, it is in my opinion quite good.

Finally, I forgot to mention that maybe I would have liked a venue with a bit more charisma. I don’t have anything against Boston, but for me it’s just another city, does not have anything special (USA people might feel different about this).

Anyway, you liked F3? go for this one, I’m pretty sure you’ll love it. In general, if you like this kind of game (I’d call it an rpg mixed with a bit of fps), F4 is quite a safe bet in my opinion.

To give a bit of background, I am an older and very new gamer, who got the bug about 18 mnths ago. I've played it through 3 times, each time going up a difficulty, and never stopped being enthralled. Let me be straight - it is far from perfect. It is VERY glitchy for one thing. (Carla...get your damn Brahmin OUT of my living room!).The dialogue can be disappointing and it's particularly annoying that you often have no idea what your character is going to come out with, as the very cryptic options you're given don't cover it. As a new gamer I can't speak for how good the combat is compared to anything else, but I've found the weapons have a variety of different 'feels' and seem very response to me, I've enjoyed playing around with the many weapon choices and finding my own style, used VATS a lot and, as I've improved, enjoyed not using it too. The main story line isn't epic but good enough that I've been able to play it through three times without getting too bored, and some of the companions and their story's have been utterly engrossing and moving (I'm looking at you Nick Valentine). In fact, the NCP's are in general a likeable bunch and having them around has added a lot to the experience. And there's Dogmeat, what could be better? Other than his propensity for occasionally getting lost - I once spent a whole week, in real time, frantically searching or him in every available moment I had - he is the perfect doggy sidekick and I actually miss him when I return to real life! I've really got into modding the weapons and armor and have had the most fun playing with my power armor collection. The HUGE side story of this game is the settlement building, which for the substantial community of players that have embraced it, is endlessly engrossing and fun, and for that alone you can keep coming back to this game and have new stuff to do, bigger and better settlements to build. Shame about the settlers themselves who are a totally uninspiring bunch who do little but moan and stand on the roof at inopportune times. I wish they could have been better, Bethesda. It's frustrating to have built a fantastic bar/restaurant with all the amenities, great lighting, decor, music etc. for that miserable bunch of gits to sit there like a wet weekend. I'm surprised at people who have complained about the graphics because they may not be the Witcher 3, for example, but are still plenty good enough and I have often found myself stopping in the midst of game play to marvel at the view from the top of Corvega...or from the balcony of my home in Sanctuary Hills. To me, this game is what gaming is all about, something with a bit of heart as well as a fair bit of running around shooting stuff, plenty to explore and a fantastic range of environments to do it in, and good company to do it with. It seems to me that so much of the negative feedback on this game is from people who liked Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and clearly Fallout 4 is a different thing. Shame though, for it to cast such a pall on such an epic contribution for what is isn't rather than acknowledging what it is. UPDATE: ...so, after months & months of waiting and frustration, mods have at last come for Fallout 4. TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE...I've gone out & bought an XBox and the minute it arrives I'll be diving back into Fallout...with a new beginning...new gear...new dialogue...new characters and places to explore....green grass and leafy trees...Dogmeat at my side AND a companion.....I can't wait. But first, I'm going to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas! Thank you, Bethesday. Shame on you, Sony! Expand

The Wastelands can be both depressing and magnificent at the same time, showing a world that was once known and lived in, now destroyed, while also giving us a new world full of hope and promise.

The combat, crafting options, and settlement building in Fallout 4 are great because it all feels so natural in the world that you are now living in. There are interesting and complex characters that you will meet throughout that add to the overall gameplay.

This game does have its flaws, the graphics are less than stellar, the inventory management can be a chore, and the overall story starts out as promising and interesting but does seem to run out of steam towards the end.

But overall, this has become one of my favorite games. It is a great and highly addictive RPG/FPS that will constantly make you wonder what is around each corner and a world that is absolutely amazing to explore.

Why? Because I can basically make whatever experience I want with this game. Survival? Check. Shooter? Check. Base Builder? Check.

It's not even that buggy, especially with the amazing modding community fixing stuff Bethesda can't be bothered to.

On the base of it, the game is painfully easy, the dialogue choices are lame, and the two endings have virtually no consequences whatsoever, but I can't deny how fun this game is. V.A.T.S has improved from Fallout 3, the game soundtrack is virtually the same, but it's still incredible, and some of the companions have great dialogue too.

The world design & graphics are a little bland compared to it's competitors, but the sheer amount of things to explore within it keeps you busy. This is what I have always enjoyed about Bethesda RPG's, and Fallout 4 takes it to another level (even pushing the depth of Skyrim quests).

Can't take a game for what it is.

That being said, Fallout 4 is my favorite Fallout game. And here's why.
So, I'm going to lay it out right now. Can't take a game for what it is.

That being said, Fallout 4 is my favorite Fallout game. And here's why.

I'm no veteran of the series. I jumped in on 3 and loved that game to pieces. Then I tried New Vegas and it almost murdered my PS3 2 hours in and then refused to play, so I never even got into that one. Despite that, I was lukewarm on Fallout 4. I was excited, but at the same time, nothing about it really made me get it until over a year after it came out. But once I got it, I couldn't put it down for a single second. Most of my time was spent playing this game, tearing it to pieces, exploring and fighting and building my settlements and looting and building my settlements and modding my guns and questing and building my settlements and building my settlements and also, maybe most importantly, building my settlements. The game is a damn blast, and I don't mind the fact that it's been streamlined, because it felt... well, more streamlined. It just flowed better than 3 did, especially with how almost broken that game was in how buggy it was and the fact that it ran at about 15 FPS on average on PS3 and hitting the VATS button was taking a leap of faith my PS3 didn't appreciate at all with about a 50/50 chance of the game just crashing outright. The game is the smoothest running Bethesda RPG to date, hands down. It actually WORKS. I've only encountered 3 crashes in my entire time playing it, and I've completed the entire game, explored everything, done everything, over level 100. Also, you can actually shoot straight in this game, which is cool. Don't have to spam VATS for everything now.

True, what the butthurt fanboys say, however. The RPG elements are dumbed down immensely for this game. The dialogue is nowhere near the depth it was in 3 or New Vegas, with simple one to two word summaries of responses with only four dialogue options, favoring a Bioware-like Mass Effect-esque dialogue wheel, which I didn't really like. I liked the more nuanced responses in 3, and the detailed descriptions of what I'm about to say. The "Sarcastic" response can range from either a quick light humored quip to accusing someone of being Hitler. It basically devolves into the "be nice" or "be a dick" categories. No room for in between.

The story isn't as strong as 3s, even though it has a moral dilemma that's much more compelling. The moral dilemma comes with choosing your faction, and it really threw me for a loop. I actually thought long and hard on which faction I should join, taking in their pros and cons, weighing up the options, considering at one point to just not choose at all, before going to the Brotherhood of Steel, because OBVIOUSLY you choose the Brotherhood of Steel. They have a god damn zeppelin. However, after that, the story falls flat. You just go around doing "kill them all" missions, then you get an ending where nothing changed and none of your choices mattered. It's just a character monologue where none of your decisions are mentioned and then post-game you occasionally see your faction around in the wasteland. That's it.

Additionally, despite being the smoothest Bethesda RPG by far, it's still marred with bugs. Most of them are entertaining, and don't hurt the game, but the settlement bugs can downright break your experience. The numbers of settlers or resources or friggin BEDS can glitch out and display wrong. It wouldn't be bad if the game registered the numbers as fact, making their happiness drop like the Brotherhood's zeppelin really ought to, by the looks of it, requiring you to go to the settlement and manually fix it by going into the workshop once there, and by that time the settlement you just came from bugged out again, and you have to go back and forth for a whole damn HOUR TRYING TO GET THE NUMBERS TO STAY THE WAY THEY'RE F***ING SUPPOSED TO BE. F***ING BETHESDA, FIX THIS SH**!

    *Ahem*

SPEAKING OF SETTLEMENTS! I enjoyed the hell out of the settlement building aspect. You can build buildings, place crops, manage your settlers, assign jobs, make money though shops, and basically build yourself a little living inside the game. It feels nice outside of all the adventuring to just hang out with your friends in a home you yourself built.

Fallout 4 is a blast. I absolutely love it. Everything I explained is without ANY DLC, as well, so I expect the game to only get better with them. Then there's the fact that there's mod support, allowing you to alter the game in millions of ways, providing even more value for your money. Despite it not being your old school Fallout, it's certainly not terrible. It's just different. But that doesn't make it worse.

I really enjoyed the game as a whole. There are always downsides to sandbox games. The main distraction for me personally was building settlements. This is where I spent most of my time. I would fully build and populate one and then explore in an outward spiral from Sanctuary. If I found a new area I fully explored it and did any related quests. After exploring for a while I'd tackle another settlement. As my exploration grew and I met the faction I would do those quest lines as far as possible. Then go back to my cycle. I avoided the main quest for a very long time. That's how I approached FO4. I explored, did quests, and didn't concern myself my the storylines much until I had conquered nearly all of the map. I've always had this same approach with Fallout and TES. It works for me. I felt no urgancy to do the main quest because quite frankly I wanted to explore and I knew it'd be there.
I thoroughly enjoyed exploring and building each settlement and my goal was always 20 settlers at least for each one. The locations varied enough so I never took the same approach twice. I had a few hallmarks, but that is just preference.
Brass tax. The only negative thing I can say about FO4 is the freedom probably took away from the urgency the main quest required. If they had time tables for certain parts, or even the whole thing, it would have been more compelling. I never expect a lot from sandbox games like this in terms of story. I play traditional RPGs for that. I play these for the freedom and open world activities that go with it. I played all four faction storylines to completion. The different takes on the main quest were interesting. The main quest as a whole was decent. I was not expecting anything game changing. I got whst I expected. For what was there it was good, but I wish there was more.
The companion side stories were also fairly decent. Nothing special, but they did add to the characters. I honestly want more from companions, but I knew what I was going to get. I always want more character development. In almost everything.
I'm looking at everything as a whole. I enjoyed every moment I have spent and will spend in FO4. I just can't shake the feeling it has unrealized potential. The world is huge with so many characters and possibilities. Posting this after all DLC is released makes me sad. I'd gladly have paid more for more.
I can't compare this to FO3 as I've not found time to play it.

Sure, the game does get way too expanded and the side questing/exploration distracts from the main quest. When hasn't it been that way in ANY Bethesda RPG?!
The main quest is better than it's ever been, even with the not-so silent protagonist. Granted their lines could have been a LOT more diverse.
Weapon/Armor customization was cool, I wanted more, but there was still plenty of things to do.
I did miss weapon repair system and the karma points. But I wouldn't drop the score for that, nor would I do it for the lack of REAL mod support for the PS4. That was Sony's issue with the game.
Even after platinum this, I've STILL got things to do in the game. True Lone Wanderers know this is a classic, just like the others.

Starting with the graphics and game engine, they are dated and initially (especially after playing The Witcher 3), it's feels like a huge downgrade. Saying that, after a while the graphics grew on me and I've come to appreciate the incredibly full and detailed world building of this game where there is nothing truly empty about the world. Whereas normally in open world games there are large empty spaces with a few roaming creatures/enemies, every inch of this world has a full story to tell if you're the type of person to appreciate that.
The 50s-60s theme just give it a natural aura of nostalgia that ties in perfectly with a post apocalyptic setting where you're meant to feel the tragic loss of the good old days. No other game achieves this level of melancholic nostalgia that's broken up with healthy doses of dark humour, silliness and downright dark theme changes. The world building is just incredibly immersive, interesting and fun.
Every aspect of the roleplay/gunplay/customisation are very decent and not overburdened/padded to insane levels which makes it very accessible once you get the hang of it (I find over-complicated systems and customisation detracts for the core experience of any game and acts more as a padding used when the actual game-play/storytelling/exploration is lacking).
One that point, the game doesn't hold your hand with tutorials which when you come out of the Vault can seem very overwhelming. However this genuinely adds to the overall experience of being thrown into a unknown, dangerous but yet familiar world you can relate to.

On the technical side, even though I bought the game a year after release, technical performance was not that good, however it's not bad enough to seriously detract from the experience.

Lastly the DLCs (especially Far Harbour) are pretty solid additions to the game well worth having and great for the price.

Overall I'd highly recommend the game as much as I would recommend The Witcher3 and HZD. For me these are the golden standard for the genre

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is a game that I personally love because of its ability to be so original and memorable like the old Fallout games. Many people disliked the story because its short length and its small importance on what the player actually does which is sadly true as joining a different faction only changes two things: whether or not the Institute is blown up and what other factions will be killed by the player, only the last three missions change based on which faction one has chosen. Other than the main storyline however the gameplay is great offering one of the smoothest experiences when it comes to weapon mechanics and customization. The settlement feature is cool, but there really isn't much the player can do with the settlement except for sleep and store items there. The DLC's of this game are the crowning achievement. The workshop DLC's are throwaways, but Automatron, Far Harbor, and Nuka World really do expand the world and gameplay further. I recommend only buying the three DLC's I listed since they are the only story based ones. Expand

I'm a PC gamer and this was one of the first console shooters I tried. I had hard time taking over the controls but otherwise the game is solid. No crashes and load times are manageable. If you love Fallout, you love this one too.

I personally enjoyed the story, and even if during some main story quests it was boring, the story itself was well-written. The graphics aren't great, but for a bethesda game, it's pretty good. I liked the companions you can befriend in the game. It is clear that instead of putting in dozens of different companions, they focused greatly on the companions' personal quests, backstories, and personalities. One thing that really frustrated me were some quest related bugs, for example, when you have to follow a character, but the AI doesn't go to his designated location he's supposed to take you, and just stands there. I am aware this happens with many bethesda and non-bethesda games, such as The Witcher 2 (non-bethesda game) and Skyrim (bethesda game), but honestly, bethesda had enough time to fix this bug. There are still many others with bethesda should have fixed during their very long development. I enjoyed the hundreds of quests, secrets, and Easter eggs; I found myself replaying the game for one specific quest.
In conclusion, this game, in my opinion, was very well made, with great improvements on the other fallout games. I truly recommend this game.

On the whole, there is plenty to enjoy in Fallout 4. There are many interesting and surprisingly strong side quests, which more than make up for a few patchy weaknesses in the main overarching plot. The setting, while not wholly unexpected, is wonderful, with a vast array of environments and regions to explore, and plenty of enemies inhabiting those areas to combat. Combat is mostly fun, although a bit difficult at times, especially early in the game, where you can easily wander into an area with creatures numerous levels higher than you.

There are a few gripes that I have with the game, tho. The lack of RPG elements, when compared to the likes of Fallout: New Vegas, does make the game feel a lot shallower than it should be, and the focus on crafting and building settlements made that whole aspect feel like a chore more than anything else.

Overall, I really enjoyed Fallout 4. It's not perfect, but it's a damn fine game, despite it's flaws.

More polished than ever, the latest Fallout finally feels as good running and gunning as it does watching VATS unfold. The locations and setting are possibly the best yet, and the story finally had some philosophical meat to it that offers a lot of roleplaying potential depending on how you view the issues at hand. These games are true masterpieces of design.

The settlement system is the best of the new innovations, HOURS of optional fun to be had there if you want it, though I also appreciate the depth of weapon customization, which is deeper and more tied to player skills/perks than it was in Fallout New Vegas, where I enjoyed the customization as well. I loved being able to permanently affect the Wasteland how -I- wanted to by crafting settlements and kitting out the settlers inhabiting them. The Wasteland isn't just being rebuilt because some story quest tells me it'll happen after the game, it's happening RIGHT NOW because I'M doing it.

However what prevents this from a higher score is for a 2015 game being the same year Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V released the graphics/framerate quality are seriously outdated and even now stutters and freezes and the story itself is not all that great all things considered since 3 and New Vegas were great in this aspect. Almost every faction were unlikable especially my personal favorite the Brotherhood of Steel being more facists than before.

However the best story it offers comes from the companions for the first time in my Fallout history I love the character arcs of the companions even my least favorite Preston Garvey. I recommend this to people who love gameplay but for moral choice storywise this is not the game for that.

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
