I heard a lot of people saying this game is completely boring (I'm sure you heard someone saying it, too), and I can tell that after a 45 hours of playthrough on hard difficulty I still have the desire to play it. For me, it was not boring at all because every delivery is not just a run to some point, but a little journey, with all those troubles you face on your way to receiver. There are so many things trying to interrupt you that you just do not have the to get bored. And every time you start to think "I'm tired of this" you receive some new gear or equipment that will make a new trip much more interesting. Consider that I had such an experience playing on high difficulty and I believe it is the one that is most balanced. Things got really hard only during Cliff encounters. So let me pick out all the pros and cons of the game I highlighted. + Beautiful graphics. Some places look really stunning and it was a pleasure to look at those landscapes. + Cool-looking locations and characters. Their design is so damn cool that you will definitely use on of them as wallpapers. The game is really stylish and I believe no one will dispute that. + Story. I cannot say it is kind of mind-blowing or ideal story. Moreover, I noticed it is pretty much overstuffed and it could be 5-10 hours less, but it has interesting stories of characters, nice ending and it will certainly make you want to cry at some moments. + Humour and just some weird stuff. It sounds strange, but there are a lot of little things that will make you smile, for example, you can just shout "Over here!" and receive a response "Over where?" of there is another player around. It has no point but you just can. You can grimace looking into mirror, or the boss can say something like "Are you going to lower the difficulty?". + BB. This child is the one you will love with all your heart. It is so cute and adorable that you just cannot "think of it like as instrument". It is a baby and you will feel like a father for some time even if you are not one. + Cooperation. The game makes you a part of it's world and this makes you to spend hours doing side quests and deliver materials to build some road, bridge or anything else. The mechanic of likes in its turn gives you the possibility to face the consequences of your actions. It lets you know when someone is using your bridge or when a vehicle you took and then left is destroyed. - Terrible controls. You will definitely try to break your controller sometimes because of that. The controls are just so bad that they are the reason you die most of times. I even thought of it as a kind of game mechanic. - Empty world. There are lots of mountains, plains, rivers and...and nothing. All the knots look the same and most part of the game you see nothing but just some empty fields or mountains. It is really monotonous. So, as you can see, the game is really unique. It has its style and ideas. I believe it is an experience everyone should face, because this is truly a masterpiece. Expand

It is a different game from what you are used to, I do not understand why they say that the story is not understandable, since the begining in the scenes they explain everything. It is definitely a long game, so are all RPGs, to enjoy it you must level up the facilities. The story despite being rare is good. I recommend playing this game and don't let the hate influence you.

However, here is the story what will impact you deeply. It will be confusing at the beginning, but, once you get it, the plot can be appreciate it in all its glory, giving you feeling your experiencing an unique distopic sci fi movie.
The music is simply awesome, perfectly fit in specific moments to enhance the emotions of a give moment. The performances of Norman Reedus and Mad Mikkelsen are a delightful gift, and the graphics are beautiful.
Sadly, they could give us an unforgettable cast of enemies, as any Kojima production, instead they are kind of plain, however, this does not overshadow the rest of the game.
It is not a game for everyone, that's for sure, but, if you are looking for something different, this is your best shot.

Game experience is best with the online mode enabled.

    Story 9, Gameplay 8, Graphics 10, Music 10

    Now,

With that said, I realize the game might not be for everyone and isn't without it's flaws. I do think internet memes created a lot of unreasonable bias preventing potential fans from picking up the game. It's far more than a walking simulator, and only takes a few hours to get to your first vehicle in-game. I feel like most people hating on the walking aspect of the game didn't bother to even play it this far. Throughout the game, you get more and more tools to help you deliver packages more efficiently, all but completely negating making deliveries on foot.

It is more of a delivery simulator, I can kind of agree to that, but the system is designed in a way that it does feel good and doesn't get old for me. I finished the game with over 20 million likes and I can't even remember how many packages I delivered, but it far exceeded what you'd need to do to simply get through the game. And that's something I admired about the game actually, a player could choose how much they wanted to do and play. If you wanted to just do the story, you could get through the game fairly quick and ignore a great majority of the game.

In addition to phenomenal cutscenes and story-telling, the game did a fantastic job integrating the game mechanics into the story itself. There was a reason behind earning 'likes' and it played a bit into the motivations of some of the NPCs.

The game's greatest strength, in my opinion, is the atmosphere it creates for the player. Everything contributes via the story telling and attention to detail. You really do feel isolated out there traveling from point A to B. And for a long time, encounters with BTs stayed spooky as hell. Stepping into a new region to have a beautiful soundtrack play caused me to slow down and take it all in as the song played. I was attached to every single moment spent in the game and I really took my time. I doubt many players spent the time in the game that I did, and I literally did everything getting every achievement and completing every delivery. Any excuse to keep myself immersed in this world.

Why didn't I give the game a 10? Well, a perfect game simply doesn't exist and I believe a 10 is a disingenuous rating (same with a 0). And the game did have its faults, like the animation that alerted you to entering a BT zone. That got old quick and disrupted the game flow as you could not skip it (I've learned that a later patch, after I stopped playing, addresses that). I think the building structures aspect of the game could use a little more polish and quality of life changes. Wouldn't have minded a GPS auto-drive scenario for travelling main roads and frequented paths. AI behavior could have been a little better, particularly friendly porters travelling around.

Last thing I want to touch on, despite the beautifully written and acted story, there was a sequence in particular that was godawful and repetitive for no good reason. Doing the same exact action got old after the second or third time and I can't even remember how many times total you had to do it. I felt myself falling out of the story and getting frustrated with that sequence.

I wish more players gave this game a chance beyond the memes and the first hours before getting to your first vehicle.

Overall, I'd still give the game a solid 9 and I hope Kojima revisits this world again soon and brings Norman Rheedus back for another story. I can't wait to see what else Kojima does.

If DS is anything, it's the product of Kojima's inner psyche, and this really shows. It's a game made foremost for Kojima by Kojima, and honestly, I can see why it's so divisive. The menus are a pain in the ass to navigate, for example. After 20 hours or so the player adjusts to them, but then again that's after 20 hours of navigating menus that you can't exit out of without saving their state. Grindy-ness is another serious problem the game sports. It's very repetitive with missions almost always "get this, take it here" with a few "get this from a hostile zone, bring it back" sections interspersed in between. Obviously, people can take issue with this, without a doubt- doing the same thing over and over again often doesn't sit well with a generation that wants as much variety as fast as possible. However, IMHO, the fun in DS comes from the routes you take and the way you tackle deliveries. Oh, got a massive amount of cargo you can't carry? Will you use floating carriers or a vehicle? Can those floating carriers get up that mountain? Can a vehicle? Are there obstacles you need to avoid? Will you change your route or go straight through? In what is essentially a giant walking simulator, this variety in execution, coupled with the new equipment and upgraded equipment you are almost constantly gaining from these deliveroo missions, makes for a genuinely fun and varied experience, not based on the missions themselves but how you go about solving the obstacles presented to you within those missions.

Now, the story. It's convoluted- to say the least. It requires almost constant attention to figure out what the **** is actually happening around you and required me to play through the entire game two times (that might not seem like a lot, but ended up in me clocking in a total of 372 hours) to understand what was actually happening during the story. It's very abnormal and breaks from the norm in the way it tells its story, but overall, even before I finally managed to understand what was actually going on it made for a very emotional and moving experience, especially that almost godly ending. Sam and BB's relationship grows throughout the game, and by the end, you genuinely feel connected to all the characters you meet, especially deadman, praise that guy.

Graphically, the game is stunning. The terrain modeling is quite simply some of the best I have literally ever seen- the environments look awesome, and so does the aesthetic clash, with futuristic clean surfaces and cities colliding with beautiful Icelandic terrain.

Combat is less than great but still good. Stealth at the early game feels decent and genuinely needed, but by the end of the game, the stealth aspect is overplayed and essentially useless as you can just gun BTs straight back to the beach. There were some items I literally never used, such as the fake cargo packages and the smoke grenades, as I was almost always armed to the teeth with at least 2 non-lethal assault rifles and plenty of blood bags, meaning getting shot was barely an issue for me. Another issue I had with the game was resource management. You almost never have an issue with resources being scare until it comes time to build the trans-map highway, which ended up draining every single outpost of materials in my first run, and wasn't even finished- so I feel like that could have been balanced way better.

Overall, however, this game was an absolute treat to play, and it might just be me but I never had a problem with the clearly monotonous and repetitive mission cycle, as I always had another way to try and get around it- this gets my personal 9/10 and is my favorite game of 2019, just barely passing AC7.

It is nice for a change of pace to play a game where I can focus more on the scenery and story than combat.

That's not to say there is no sense of adventure. Choosing the right route. Planning ahead for multiple loads. Soon enough you'll get vehicles which help a lot.

It has a very satisfying gameplay loop in which you breathe a sigh of relief every time you make a successful delivery. Getting new equipment to help you on your journey is exciting too.

It's a game that prizes patience, helping others, and exploration.

The story is a tale of death and life. Loneliness and human connection. It emphasizes how humans need each other to survive.

The only reason I'm docking 1 point is for the poorly shoehorned in product placement for monster energy drinks and amc's Ride with Norman Reedus. That and some hokey character names. In both cases they slightly detract from the believability of the world. But they quickly become an afterthought once you get into your rhythm.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
