I haven't finished the game yet, but it definitely doesn't deserve the hate it's getting. The story is interesting, and I'm excited to find out how it ends. Don't waste your time watching play throughs of the game. I don't think that does it justice.

Calling it a "walking simulator" is kind of a low blow to be honest. I haven't completed a single delivery without something happening,

Calling it a "walking simulator" is kind of a low blow to be honest. I haven't completed a single delivery without something happening, like getting chased by MULES or having BT's show up. It's rarely ever a simple A to B uninterrupted delivery, so theres a level of tension with each trip. After a while, you would actually appreciate a simple delivery. Most of the time you have a new gadget or upgrade to try out, so theres usually a new spin on the delivery process (i.e it doesn't feel very repetitive). The BT's are really scary, and I start getting nervous every time it starts to rain. Theres a real consequence to getting caught by the BT's, so theres a huge sense of relief when you make it to your destination, or the safety of your private room. Keep in mind when looking at the delivery list that the story missions have a thin line of gold going through them. You could get bogged down doing every side mission delivery if you don't notice this.

The online aspects of the game are brilliant as well. It's cool knowing that the ladder you left behind, or the bridge you built is being used and appreciated by hundreds of players. I didn't think I would be as into it as I am. I'm hoping down the line that the player base completely rebuilds the world. I think that would be pretty unique. Full disclosure; I love the Metal Gear series, for what its worth!

UPDATE: After 10hrs in the game this is at least 8/10 game.
UPDATE2: After 20hrs, this is a great game. Kojima weirdness check, cooperation with other people in the game check, long cutscenes check, console is silent even though the graphics are the best I've seen to date check.
UPDATE3: After 60hrs, didn't finish the game, I started to get bored. The game is great but def not for everybody.
UPDATE4: I picked the game again, and it was fun. Finished 100% after 110hrs. Final rating 8/10. Great characters, weird story, you can get easily bored with the game. A bit over bombastic Kojima style. He wanted to make the game longer than it should've been.

A noble, gorgeous story mixed with methodical gameplay that not everyone will enjoy.
In my opinion, the gameplay time is a little too long. But the beautiful storytelling and original setting allow you to immerse yourself in this amazing creation.

So big, so I not planned buy the game before the next year, but well, sales do they job. First of all - Death Stranding have a pro's and a con's at the same time. So I separate my review on this two points. No spoilers ahead!

What I like in Death Stranding:

Plot. Death Stranding is a "game about the story", and yeah, it's absolutley unique. It has a strong drama scenes, a very funny moments, some action-scenes, some horror-like things, and of course you will drop couple of tears, even if you didn't want to. Just because. I would say, that the story is not for all kind of peoples, it's definetly not a new Metal Gear Solid or Zone of the Enders, just in fact. But still, it's really good! And when you complete the game, when you watch a long and smooth cutscenes, when you watch the credits, and again watch some cool cutscenes, you feel a beautiful satisfaction. Because you clearly understand the story, what Kojima Productions are telling you. The plot feels whole, complete, finished exactly how it need to be finished. It's actually funny compares to the main story driving idea - "Make America whole again". KP makes Death Stranding whole. And it's amazing.

Gameplay. I think almost everyone already know about who we play and what we do, so let's skip this part and talk about some details. Playing as Sam is absolutley fresh game experience. never felt anything like this before, and it's wonderful. Sometime it's close to meditation (with a 100kg cargo on your back, yeah!), sometimes it feels like survival horror, sometimes - like hardcore simulator of deliveryman. Most of gameplay mechanics works just fine, not all of them feels on right place, but it's okay. When you sucsesfully avoid a group of enemies, or climing on the highest mountain, or win the hand-to-hand fight with ten terrorists with guns - you didn't see any missing mechanics, you just enjoying that situation.

Cutscenes. They gorgeous. It's an ode to Kojima's movies-obsession. It's not just some another in-game cutscenes, it's a masterpiece. Like watching a high quality movie inside your game. Actor's game is phenomenal, and not only from Norman Reedus, almost every actor in the game do they best. Emotions, what we've seen on screen, feels real. I think that I'm old enough not to cry, but hey, tears happens.

What I don't like in Death Stranding:

Mountain location. High peaks, tons of snow, breathtaking winds, useless vehicles, fighting with enemies and cold at the same time... It sounds cool (in many ways), but it's oddest 5 hours in the game, what cool down (more jokes about winter, yeah) your entusiasm. Mountains just not created like it should be: a lot of points, when you just falling down without a reason, a long-distance quests, forcing you to slowly walking on snow from A to B and back. And you almost didn't get tools for easier walking. And they left you without scaner. And sent a groups of invisible things. Get ready for quiting game and load again after every 10-15 minutes. And worst of all, you can forget about a story, because all these 5 hours you just makes a local-quests, you don't make any progress in Main Story. Just deal with it. Death Stranding definetly may be a lot better, if that part of the game was cut off, or minimaze in two times, but we have what we have.

Then the gameplay, you are walking a lot, it becomes a bit repetetive after a while and you get stuck on stones all the time when you are using your bike... Death Stranding deserves maybe 80-90/100 but not any higher than that since the game is not anywhere close to being the best game ever created! I haven't even ever seen a game that deserves a perfect 100/100 so why is Death Stranding then getting a 100/100 from 18 Critic Reviews when the game actually is not the best game ever created?

Something is fishy about all this... Almost seems like Sony or Kojima Productions have paid some of the Critic Reviews so they give it perfect a 100/100. Of course I'm not sure about this but there is something going on with the reviews unfortunately...

With all that being said, the game is great but DO NOT expect the game to be a perfect 100/100 that a lot of Crtitic Reviews are saying it is when you buy it!

I actually really like the gameplay in this game. Anyone calling it a walking simulator unironically is lost. But the standout of this game is the story for me. I love Mads and he killed it, so did the other actors. The world is super interesting, and the characters backstorys are top tier.

Either you will like it or you won't. Very unusual game. I had a lot of fun managing my cargo and making deliveries. I liked that it's a very story driven game. There are no "wrong choices" and the bosses are not hard. I found the dialogue between the characters very weak at times. The first three chapters are very long but then the pace picks up and you feel like your finally making some headway.

    Negative points:

    - There was literally a chapter explaining the story to the gamer. This should not be needed if it was a better build story.
    - Main tasks became tedious later in the story

If story-based games are your thing/you primarily play games for the story, I'd say it's worth checking out on that merit alone.

    Gameplay: 6.5/10

I admittedly found the base gameplay enjoyable, but by no means perfect. I found it similar to Breath of the Wild; you largely walk from empty landscape to empty landscape, and the environment is often your biggest adversary. I personally quite enjoyed the walking sim aspects, but found the combat rather lacking, the boss fights underwhelming, and some of the missions too tedious; the challenge often lies in either having to cover far more ground in one stretch than Sam is comfortably able to do, or cover ground without being able to fabricate new equipment before setting out. I felt it was at its strongest when you could properly prepare, and at its weakest when you couldn't. While the boss fights themselves were underwhelming, they at least had a lot of spectacle; they have a grand sense of scale, and almost look like things straight out of some type of scifi or fantasy movie. Looking cinematic doesn't fix the fact they, for the most part, present little challenge and feel more like filler.

    Visuals: 9/10

The game is, for the most part, visually stunning. Its geometry, texture quality (in most cases), animations, and character models are among the best I've seen across any platform, and it has a very nice implementation of tessellation on snow. With that said, it can drop frames very periodically, it has just okay texture filtering, and its anti-aliasing solution leaves a lot to be desired; small details, such as fences or staircases, shimmer and appear jagged as you move.

    Sound Design: 9/10

The sound design in this game is very on point, and lends a lot to the overall experience. The choice of music is generally solid in my eyes, while the sound effects and audio cues/"ambient" music add a LOT to the game. For example, when in a BY area, an ominous high pitched pulse continually plays, and the BTs themselves make sounds.

    Overall: 8/10

Overall, this is a game I greatly enjoyed despite some missteps in the combat, writing of dialogue, and tedium in some of the later missions. If the concept of a walking simulator with a good story appeals to you, I highly recommend it; the description of a walking sim frankly isn't very far off from the truth, and it's those moments in which I feel the game is at its strongest. I'd probably have enjoyed the gameplay more as a whole if the combat was either given even less focus, or enhanced to a significant degree, particularly when the boss fights already nailed the spectacle; the systems in place simply did not make those parts enjoyable to me at all. This has easily been one of the most unique games I've played, and despite some glaring issues with it I rank it quite highly. I went in not expecting great things due to how controversial/polarizing it's been, but I walked away quite impressed overall, and I'm looking forward to what Kojima puts out next.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
