i played about 8 hours and i like it. something i wanted for long, a chill game that you walk around in deliver package. im a bit done with the action games so yeah if you like a chill game this is definitely for you! but sometimes mechanics are a bit broken in my opinion that you want to pick something up from the ground but sam decided to just jump around for a bit like wtf dude take it easy.

Death Stranding is a weird game indeed. When you start playing you come across beautiful graphics, engaging story and one by presenting everything that has come. At first you start asking yourself, "Am I going to be pacing all the time?" But the answer comes over time and makes the gameplay very attractive with little touches of tension.

Combat is rare because it is not the main focus of it, this means that the people that expected this to have frequent combat moments are severely let down. About 10 hours in and it is an interesting and enjoyable game but is not for everyone. It is a really high budget walking sim with lots of long and many cut scenes Kojima is known for. The beginning few hours in particular are heavy with walking to destinations with not a ton going on in terms of action (mostly stealth sequences) and at least an hour worth of cut scenes. The beginning few hours in particular are heavy with walking to destinations with not a ton going on in terms of action (mostly stealth sequences) and at least an hour worth of cut scenes. So if you aren't into any of those things, this game is probably not for you.

If you are, well you are in luck! It's a unique take on a post-apocalyptic scenario that most in the genre is usually either filled with zombies in an urban environment or a Mad Max type of hellscape world with marauders. This game is actually full of varying environments from moss covered mountains with rivers and streams to rocky desert environments (and this is just the two first zones). Flora and locations are very detailed and a few times I stopped and soaked in the scenery. Character models are amazing in terms of detail as well and definitely is pushing whatever version you have of the PS4 to the max! Only games in terms of graphics that rival this game on the PS4 is Detroit: Beyond Human. Voice overs are top notch, again on par with Detroit or close to any Naughty Dog game. Ambient sounds are well done such as thunder, rain, and rivers and over a long mission the game will throw a mellow indie song to go along with your adventure.

Gameplay is unique or annoying depending on your prespective. You are essentially the Special Forces of package delivery, making treks over long distances and your packages take damage from falls, time-altering rain (yes that is a thing here), other humans who want your packages, while avoiding the occasional invisible ghost called a BT. To elaborate more on the falling part, you can trip on rocks, tip over if you are carrying too much weight, fall off cliffs...but you have a nice arsenal of handy equipment like ladders and rope to help you traverse these obstacles, with full blown bridges, truck, motorcycles, and user built roads later in the game.

The multiplayer in this game is unique too as you don't play directly with anyone, and I'm not sure how many people are assigned to a zone/server with you (20-50 is my guess) but you can find other player's gear, vehicles, buildings and use it. For instance, you may be coming to a wide river and have no ladder to put horizontally across to ease the crossing but luckily another player thought of that and you can use theirs and distribute "likes" to the player for the ladder like you would a funny meme on Facebook (and that you should).

Story is interesting IMO, but maybe too convoluted for some and the game doesn't go into detail about the who, what, when, where and how of some things until later in the game. Not going into the details of the story because it's all to some extent a spoiler. You play as Norman Reedus aka Sam and take items from point A to B is most simplistic summary I can give without giving anything away or straight confusing people with the actual details. Will just tell you this isn't your typically Call of Duty single player campaign of shoot bad guys, stop nuclear/biological/chemical weapon. Nothing wrong with those games ( I enjoyed the latest Modern Warfare campaign) but this game adds lots of unique ideas that I've never seen in other games, so most is going to be unfamiliar and hard to follow for some.

All in all, really liked my time with the game thus far but as mentioned this is going to be a love or hate it type of game I think. People who enjoy walking sims will really like this because unlike most indie versions, this game has a lot going on in terms of finding things to do and exploring and really doesn't force you to continue the story or force you anywhere if you don't want to go there yet. I like that kind of independence in a game and think many others do too. Again, if this doesn't sound like your cup of tea but are somewhat intrigued, rent it. You will be able to tell in the first 5-6 hours if this is a game for you or not.

I've never played any MGS games before and didn't know much about Hideo Kojima before seeing trailers of Death Stranding. Here's my summary of good and bad points (I've only played like 4-5 hours in total so far)

    Good:
    - Great graphics on the PS4 pro with beautiful landscapes. I love walking around and exploring the post apocalyptic world, traversing rivers, rocky mountains etc.

    - Great cutscenes, feels like being a part of a Hollywood movie. Like a mixture of Lost, Stranger Things, Black Mirror.

    - Lack of action and pacifism was appealing to me. I have no rush and I see this as a relaxing experience as if I'm actually exploring a new world trekking around. This really might be a new genre and it has tons of potential for improvement.

    Bad:
    - The technology of the world seems to be too advanced for sending deliverymen around on foot. This feels weird. Could be better if the survivors weren't this "clean" and plastic. I like the world presented in the movies "The Road" and "Book of Eli" when it comes to post apocalyptic environments.

    - Could have been better if there was vehicle physics and gameplay like Spintires.

    - The async multiplayer feels weird. Makes the game easier but funnier. Might be better if you play it totally offline, giving you more isolation and realism of being alone in the environment.

The game was slow to begin with alot of cutscenes when I just wanted to get into gameplay but now I am really enjoying it and keep coming back to play, I got so excited when I unlocked vehicles lol but I didn't even mind the walking (it's not a walking simulator) I love all the micromanaging aspects of the game and the way Kojima has integrated the online is so cool the story is very interesting and keeping me involved. I'm not sure where everyone's getting this "obsessive advertisement" from have they even played the game? There is small amount of advertising when you visit your private room with 5 cans of monster energy on the table but they actually have a purpose you drink them for extra stamina and when Reedus takes a poop the doors advertise Norman Reedus rides on amc which I actually thought was funny didn't bother me at all people are making a big deal out of absolutely nothing.

And one last thing and probably the most surprising and best I have been playing since day one and have not experienced one bug the world is massive but nope not one it's great to see such a well polished game released, normally if I buy day one it's riddled with bugs so I was so surprised, Kojima should be proud just of that he has done a very good job here and other developers should take note that you don't need to rush and release a buggy mess I think we appreciate it more if it's finished to perfection which this game is, I will be playing this game for a long time I absolutely love it.

The game looks and runs beautifully on a regular ps4. The game is a literal UPS/USPS simulator but with guns and bombs and more tools at your disposal with rhe addition of ghosts(bt's). Some people might find this boring and some people might find it satisfying to deliver the packages safely to their location.
I believe that the people giving the game under a 6 is either a hater of kojima or just plain casual gamers who went in expecting this game to be like a ghost recon or cod type of game. Unfortunately those of you were wrong lol.
Now, i give this game a 7.5/10 because it's repetitive nature of the beginning. And the positive of great actors, voice acting, amazing story and lack of bugs (so far after 20hrs no bugs). Other than that it's a solid game you should buy when in sale if you're skeptical. So if you read this review thank you and have a wonderful night/day.

No, this is not a "walking simulator," anymore than Alien Isolation was a "hiding simulator," or a Quantic Dream/Telltale game "one big unending quick time event." That reduces what it actually is to a ridiculous level. It is also, not for people expecting a Metal Gear -esque game. I will tell you who will like this game, people who liked Journey, who liked Silent Hill (there is an element in this game where you are notified of a change in the world, and the world becomes much more dangerous, much like whenever the siren sounds in Silent Hill, it is intense when it happens), Fumito Ueda games, Cyan Worlds games, Quantic Dream games. If you dislike any of the above types of games, this game likely isn't for you. The "clumsy" mechanics is intentional, to mimic the actual difficulty of traversing land. You do repeat the singular task of delivery, over and over, much like the task of travelling to the next temple in The Last Guardian, over and over. It's the types of things that can happen to you each time, which gets intensified, more complex, each delivery and the next, which creates the tension, addictiveness, meaning and challenge of the game. Not to mention a very compelling story. It is bar none, one of the best game I have played this year.

I gave this a 8, due to two flaws: 1) the world is too empty, they can populate each station with a few people on the surface to give it a sense that it is a living world, though I understand the intention of creating isolation in the main character and due to aesthetic, much like a Fumito Ueda game like Shadow of the Colossus. 2) There is not enough stakes for the deliveries. Instead of cargo that are essentially all interchangeable with one another, it could have been that he's delivering a bomb or weapons or some secret codes or something that you SEE being used. Maybe this occurs later in the game (I'm still in Episode 2: Amelie). But these two flaws are a bit too jarring to not be noticed.

Otherwise, this has been a personally utterly immersive and gripping gaming experience for me. When BB cries, and thunder claps, the rainbow appears, I get the same feeling of intense dread I felt with the first Silent Hill games I played, whenever I heard the siren. It was very visceral.

It's not perfect, but between 8 and 9 out of 10 is where I'd put it. But do not buy it if you were expecting MGS. It is not. It's a great Quantic Dream-esque/survival horror-esque/Journey-esque/The Last Guardian type game, but with a lot more customization you can do with gear and a great story.

The people giving 0 are reviewing the wrong genre.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
