Definitely innovative and different. There's far too many cutscenes which get out of hand. Once you get into the game it's definitely relaxing and quite the journey. It surely picks up as it goes on and is unlike anything you'll ever play. Vehicle controls are simply not good, I'll leave it at that.

Death Stranding is a very controversial game. I really love it, but wouldn't recommend it easily:

Pros are amazing graphics, sound, atmosphere, story, message of the game itself (rebuilding America) Cons are it can easily be found VERY boring. It's basically about moving from point A to point B, with a lot of backtracking. If you fall in love with Sam Bridges, then it's a great game.

Bad first, gameplay is not very adrenaline inducing , just requires constant focus and patience, so it turns off the majority , other than that everything from the soundtrack to the graphics , atmosphere, story , and the interactions with the world and characters is an extremely well made product in those aspects

A decent but ultimately flawed experience. Death Stranding was definitely a unique experience to say the least, I've never played anything like it.
The game's visuals are incredible, some of the best to date. I see many saying that the gameplay is just a "walking simulator" but it's really much more than that. Yes at times it can feel like a slog to get to where you're going but overall

Yes at times it can feel like a slog to get to where you're going but overall it was enjoyable. There's many different things at play to keep you entertained as you traverse the world.
There are a few things that keep me from giving this game a higher score. Firstly, the game's driving physics are pretty terrible. In 2019 there's really no excuse for how bad these driving mechanics are, especially from a game with such a high budget. Then there's the gunplay/combat in general, it just feels like an inferior MGSV. Another thing is the difficulty of the game or lack thereof. I played this game on hard mode and I only died maybe 3 times and I never failed any of my deliveries. The lack of challenge was definitely a detriment to this game. Lastly the characters, most of the cast is pretty forgettable. For a game that obviously wants you the player to get invested in it's story and world, it's pretty disappointing that the majority of the cast is subpar.

No joke! I'm even not so interested in playing it. I really do it only when I have nothing to do... And to be honest, I find it boring, and complicated! I want to have fun when playing, and this game doesn't give me emotions.
I loved the metal gear series, but this game doesn't wake my interests. I am very disappointed about the money I spent. I would rather play Metal Gear Solid 1 or even Silent Hill 1 on the PS1, than this game.

    UPDATE

I give this game a 7 in the end (it was a 4 before this last review update).
After the first weeks, the game got better and more interesting to play. So I completed it. The story is very nice. Like an A class movie.
Anyway still far more inferior to metal gear alltogether.
I have the feeling that the money invested in this game has been very much and maybe could have been better used... Something is clearly still missing...

Cutscenes way too long, and the plot is too complicated. I feel like I would need a second playthrough to really grasp all the details, at the very end of the game it all starts to make sense, but I feel writers should find better narrative ways to get us to understand everything while we play, somehow the way it was told is to ambitious and complex for a video game.. Who wants to read hundreds of found documents, and emails to completely understand a games plots?
Game play is uneventful and not saying it needs to be action packed, im all in for slow relaxing games, I enjoyed it most of the time.. but the game does not surprise very often. And finally the scenery is not THAT beautiful as some say.. looks artificial and too digital.
Menus are too complicated and it takes for ever to organize your inventory for each mission.
All in all, I still played it to the end. It was a satisfying 'every now and then 1hr of gaming' perfect for relaxing after a days work.

I am Not a 'gamer' but enjoy playing (good) video games every now and then.
I loved; Sekiro, Zelda BOTW, Inside, Last of Us, Celeste, & Control- And enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has balls. As someone who grew up never playing Metal Gear this is my first Kojima game and overall a good gaming experience.

    The Pro's:

The game loop is addicting. If you like world building games or open world adventure games this might be for you. After spending 100 plus hours getting platinum the gameplay is what keep me going. The game is polished right out of the case. A rare case in today's triple AAA market.

    The Cons:

The story is bad, just bad. It's too on the nose for me. The characters writing is not good. Fragile is one of the worst written characters i've come across. You could have cut Higgs right out of the game and still have came to the same ending. He is one of the better written character too.

Despite the meaning, the Amelie story thread was not what I wanted. I felt the that connecting the UCA was secondary for Sam as he was chasing after Amelie. So yes I was looking for your 'classic chase story' in which Sam chases after his sister to connect.

    Overall:

A good and unique gaming experience in today's bland gaming space. I will never play the Metal Gear Series but look forward to his next project. Would recommend to all as a gaming experience and to some as a game. The highs are high and the lows are low; 7 out of 10 is about right for this game.

My feelings about the game are complex, and this, perhaps, is what has made it worth experiencing. The first night after playing it, I had no choice but rant to a friend for the better part of an hour in trying to understand just how I had actually received it. I'll start with the positives. While the game isn't for everybody, it's not necessarily only for those of any profound "artistic sensitivity", to semi-quote a rather tasteless comment Kojima made in denigration to Americans and our supposed lack thereof. It is rather, I believe, more geared towards those who might enjoy a game like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, or maybe Truck Simulator. Along those lines. While much of the gameplay is rather mundane, I have actually taken great satisfaction in just navigating the landscape and managing my supplies. The whole "strand" thing has been neat too; it's fun to see others building things around and with you, and it's neat to know others are there, even if only in a kind of ethereal way. The game is generally beautiful, and a lot of the aesthetic is pretty cool, though some does come across as pointless and "artsy" to the point of maybe trying a bit too hard, a la Fragile's umbrella. In any case, there is a lot to appreciate here, but once again, the actual game part of the game seems more niche than would probably be ideal for a blockbuster game. It shouldn't be blamed for that, however. I'm genuinely happy to see something so bold executed at such a high level of production. Even if the game were to be a total failure, it would still be a cultural touchstone, more or less.
Now for the bad. The script. My God, the script is overwrought, self-indulgent, forced, and has made me cringe to the point I've thought of just hanging up my controller. Don't get me wrong, I generally love weird, obtuse things in general, often strangeness for its own sake, but much of this just feels contrived. The metaphors are almost not even metaphors for want of subtlety, and much of what might be profound in the game is obscured by what I can only describe as "off". It feels like a case of something trying to appear profound by means of obfuscation rather than any real meaning, and this coming from a huge fan of John Ashbery's poetry. I can digest weirdness well enough, but when it is clobbered up with things that are, to me, tastelessly stupid, I have a hard time. Take, for example, the name of one of the NPCs, "Die-Hardman". I can't get over how awkward and try-hard this feels to me. This kind of off-kilter, B-movie stuff might work in Metal Gear games, but this game takes itself far too seriously to pull it off, and it often comes across as just plain bad. This is all subjective, of course, but I am not into it. At all. Throw in some mind-bendingly out of place product placement, and now I'm just confused. It doesn't seem like the vision of an auteur as much as it feels like somebody trying to impress all his arthouse friends with a kind of manufactured esotericism. If it were only a movie, I'd just feel sick for having watched it. Most fortunately, the cutscenes can be skipped. I should say though, that the premise isn't entirely terrible. There are some really neat things that have been done in the game, and some of the concepts are generally pretty interesting. I personally think the intertwining of the worlds of the dead and the living and some of how that ties into the technology is actually pretty awesome. My problem is with the implementation, plain and simple. Altogether, I like the game. It has made me think, and the actual gameplay scratches a particular itch I have as a gamer. However, the game isn't for everybody, and the story framing it is for far, far fewer. Certainly for Kojima himself. It is beautiful, it is strange, it is provocative, but it is not well-written, it is not subtle, and its themes don't go any deeper than any like-minded platitude. There are beautiful moments in the game, moments that might actually border on the profound, if only it didn't get in its own way.

Play it for yourself. This is one of the most addicting and unique games I have played this generation. Its themes are layered into the mechanics like nothing else out there. The story and world provide just enough information to keep you curious and invested. You will lose yourself in the exploration and deliveries.

But lets get to positive stuff.
The Game can still be fun if you have patience. it rewards you for some side delivering with cool equipment throughout the whole story. Some characters are really interesting and story is pretty solid, but predictable near the end. Also after playing the game over 100 hours i didn't see lot of bugs and optimalization is good.

Kojima's desperation to be recognized as the penultimate artist has never been more desperate, and never more apparent, which has resulted in a discombobulated mess of a game that has many high-points, and as many, if not more, low-points. The fanaticism of his worshipers doesn't allow them to view the game objectively, and therefore gives this game a lot more praise than it deserves in many areas. The pace trudges along asking more than any other game from the average player just to get through the opening hours. It almost blatantly disrespects your time and does so all while constantly preaching it's message of unity and teamwork of a united country, whilst relying upon the work of one man. The plot holes are numerous and the environments are boring, offering little diversity in gameplay throughout the entire experience. At the same time, once you get into the role and start diving into the story, it can sometimes be somewhat enjoyable and rewarding. It just doesn't always make that an easy task. Certain sessions can leave you feeling exhausted by the end, and it's hard to tell if that comes from a sense of accomplishment and conquering adversity, or if the banality of it all is just that mentally taxing to stay immersed within. However, under no circumstances whatsoever is this a perfect game. It's flaws are numerous and the only thing saving it from being trashed into oblivion is Kojima's name. It's also not the absolute worst experience that I've ever had in gaming. I can't wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone, but if you're looking for an interesting experience and committed to fully diving into a peculiar gameplay style with many repetitive loops and some glaring plot-holes, this might be something worth exploring. If nothing else, I'd highly recommend buying it on a deep sale if you're not 100% certain that it's the game for you. At least then, if you don't like it, you won't feel like you're losing out on that much money in the process. Expand

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
