As an aside, I have a 1 year old, and the BB audio effects are very easy to mistake for your real baby's monitor, which was a frequent annoyance. The idea here was cool but it is problematic for newer parents.

Name one game in the past ten years that has gotten the attention of this many trolls. You can’t. I checked.
It’s a wonderful game that challenges you every step of the way. After spending 200 hours with the game I’m still discovering new things and ways to explore. Don’t let all of these fake accounts and fake reviews detture you from experiencing this.

One of the best games I've ever played, and without a doubt different from everything else. So many of the negative reviewers never give any concrete reasons as to why they don't like the game. Only that it sucks or is boring, but no elaboration. Here's why I like Death Stranding.

The story is challenging and requires you to draw your own conclusions instead of spoon-feeding you, like the Dark Souls series. Your enemy is the terrain and weather more than anything you can punch or shoot. You are rewarded for careful planning and attention to the terrain. You can't derp your way through with automatic parkour maneuvers. This is NOT a walking simulator as most people use the term. A walking simulator is just where you push forward on the stick while your character walks to the next area. The walking is more of a mindless time-sink.

In Death Stranding you have to pay attention to so many details we all take for granted. You can't just pick up and carry 1000 items in your magic bag. You can't simply carry 20 ladders because you might need them. The shooting/fighting aspects are simple, but this isn't a shooter or a fighter. Those are more diversions to change up the pace than core parts of the game.

There are so many things that I can't put them all into this review. So many details you can stumble across that make you feel like you discovered something new or leave you impressed that someone thought to include such a bit of realism in this game. If you think facing a challenge and working out things yourself, then you will love Death Stranding. If you want a game you can sleepwalk through will looking at your phone, troll random people to ruin their experience, or yet another cookie-cutter COD like shooter, then you will hate Death Stranding.

Keep that in mind when you read the negative reviews.

Definitely Death Stranding it's a beast of its own, I can't remember where but said something along the lines that it feels like an indie movie with a blockbuster budget, and maybe that might be correct, the only difference is that this is a videogame.

DS is overwhelming in every aspect, from its story to its gameplay, starting with the story, Kojima is a genius in terms of setting a world and making statements or even predictions of our own reality, here in Death Stranding he took it to the next level, when people talk about how MGS is a complex story is because DS hasn't appeared yet, it really overwhelms you with its lore and at times it can be difficult to keep up with all the terminology it uses in its story, I don't want to speak a lot of it because the less you know about it the better, also, I wasn't thrilled with the inclusion of "Hollywood" actors but they surely pay off in a lot of scenes, specially Tommi Earl Jenkins, one of his scenes gave me goosebumps to the next level, it also made my eyes tears a little, they're that good.

The divisive part may be the gameplay, a lot of people said that this is a walking simulator and that may be true at some extent, but is not that simple, the core mechanic to me is that the player goes against the terrain, weather and some hazards, the hazards come as human enemies or BTs (the black beings), but mostly the terrain. In order to progress you need to adjust your inventory and decide what kind of things are you going to take with you, then, depending on how heavy or light is your character, your movement can be from cartoony clumsy to fast as a soccer player, after that you take delivery items from "A" to "B" and repeat till the end of the game, in theory it might sound boring but in practice is really addictive, and once you get to chapter 3 where you get a lot of new items and structures to help you in your journey you'll have a blast. I can't compare DS to any other game but to me, it has a Monster Hunter vibe, where the learning curves are stiff and overwhelming, but once you passed them you'll have an amazing time.

The multiplayer aspect is also incredible, instead of having a competitive experience this is a connection or strand experience where you and your fellow players didn't see each other or play with them directly but help each other with structures or items you construct, i.e. If you set a bridge to cross a river, other players in your server can use it too and also can upgrade it together, this aspect really hit me in a good way, to the point that I even gave away things to my neighborhood in order for everyone to use them. But not everything is perfect with this system, it can at times broke the experience, for example, at least two times I was told that my next delivery would be incredibly hard but, when doing it, I find a lot of things like bridges, power stations or vehicles that made the mission so easy, so it can break the immersion.

As for the negative things, I can see how for someone this can be boring, but one needs to keep in mind that this is not a shooter or a stealth game, but at the end it can feel repetitive and at times cheaty, as for the stealth part, I didn't feel it worked that good with the human enemies, the AI is dumb but the mechanics also felt unrefined at times, a similar thing happens to the "other" stealth mode with the BTs, they give you a lot of tension but once you understand how they work, they're for the rest of the game annoying, speaking of BTs the boss fights with this beings are so cool, flashy and epic but they are also broken and easy, it feels that you can't die from them because the game throws a lot of resources like HP or ammo in order for you to don't run out of them, they're also very fun tho' so it depends on your view I guess. My last and maybe more important issue to me is its world, it can felt empty to the point that it feels unfinished, you'll find a lot of people but they're holograms, for the most part, humanity is hidden in the ground and narratively it makes sense but I can't shake the feeling that is more a budget issue than a story issue, also because exploring is dangerous and also unrewarding, you'll find yourself making the same trajectories or following another player's trail to get to your destination.

Certainly Death Stranding is not a masterpiece for me, but I can easily see why it is for another person, for me it was a great time, and every day it passes it makes me think a lot in its themes, characters and my personal narrative with it, I also hardly believe that the passing on time will give its rightful place as a great game.

Death Stranding is is the highest budget walking simulator. If menus configuring package by weight on different body parts and pressing L2 or R2 to keep balance randomly or else risk dropping your carefully balanced body weight seems entertaining this game is for you. Unfortunately I don’t think this appeals to many.

Story wise it’s a cool movie concept and the ghosts (BTs) are creepy and well animated. So many famous people with bizarre dialogue that is very lost in translation. Why does a character have to be introduced to his own mother as “here is a character. Your mother, [her first name]”, or “it’s me, [weird character name]” the 100th time they talk to you. It’s as if everything is told to you with awkward dialogue instead of showing you. The plot told to you is vague but if you think about it you can get the general idea and it seems cool for a movie.

Graphics are gorgeous and the online feature where you see ladders and other useful terrain crossing items is a cool idea, for a delivery walking simulator. For a walking game there is very little to explore outside of terrain and delivery points. No secrets or lore to uncover just deliver packages. This is incredibly unacceptable for a walking video game.

Such a brilliant game, and a lot to unpack overtime. It won’t come together story wise until the latter half of the title but it’s worth it. The gameplay evolves as you progress and the variations in gameplay from combat to traversal are fantastic. Recommend playing on hard. Would probably give it a ten, but there are quite a few janky animations that cost me perfect deliveries. FantasticSuch a brilliant game, and a lot to unpack overtime. I’ve been thinking, why map in this game is different. For example in Horizon, or GTA V, or RDR2 you can walk or ride in any direction almost freely (often the only obstacles are enemies). For me that makes every trip very similar to each other, the only difference is landscape view and weather vfx. In DS the main obstacle — is the surface you walk. When I need to get from A to B, I must think my route: should I go between rocky field, or by the river, or should I find materials and finish road construction? And if I choose the last option — I need to find materials at enemy camp. Not to mention the relief, when you find bridge above the cliff running from mules, which was left there by another player. There is no easy solution — you constantly need to think what way to choose next time. I don’t mean that game is difficult to play, but it keeps you involved with every new order, and I appreciate so much. Expand

    madly liked the diverse gameplay

    I didn’t like it:

    - not so cool plot twists

    - constant repetition of the same thoughts in dialogs and calls

    - constant calls to the main character

    - inexpressive protagonist who does not care about everything from the beginning of the game to the final credits

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
