OK so everyone who giving this game a 0 OR a 10 are lying and full of S***. One camp is the COD generation who just cant fathom anything but mindless action, and the other camp are kojima fanboys who are just detached from reality.

This game “while not for everyone” has some areas which we can objectively judge.

Pros: The story and world building are superb, with some well realised characters. There are some genuinely emotional moments in the story, together with some great surprises and twists along the way. The voice acting and motion capture are probably the best in any video game so far, and the direction is overall magnificent. The graphics also are worthy of praise, with some scenes, especially in that opening and some vistas nearing photorealism. Finally, the score and the soundtrack are beautiful and genuinely evoke a sense of wonder and really added to the daunting atmosphere the environment creates.

Cons: This game has one of the best opening sequences in recent memory, and then follows this up with 10 hours of slow and tedious fetch quests. The core gameplay loop is repetitive and completely unsatisfying, and slowly degrades into a test of the player’s patience. Even players who are looking for a calming experience while traversing the vibrant landscape will be disappointed as the cavalcade of elements that need to be micromanaged are overwhelming. Boot health, feet health, baby happiness, balance, package health etc. Certain obstacles are included purely for annoyance, and the required frequent backtracking makes this game extremely frustrating to play.

Why I gave this game a 7: From a gameplay perspective this game is a failure, however the story, world and characters were engrossing enough to keep me playing for the 50+ hours of the main campaign. Every time I turned off the PS4 out of frustration, I was back a few hours later, because I was so desperate to find out what happens in the story and figure out what is going on. I understand this won't be enough for everyone, but it was for me. However, that doesn't mean I had FUN with the gameplay, just that the story was enough for me to tolerate it.

Should YOU buy this game? The answer depends on how interesting you find the post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi setting and Kojima's narrative style. If it appeals to you, you will be able to overlook the awful gameplay loop. If it doesn’t then I wouldn’t recommend this game.

Kojima's first post-MGS title is satisfying, slightly grinding, and very original. The humor is toned down while the empathy is turned up. The game is beautiful, meticulously balanced and aside from mid-late game grind, doesn't have a downside. Well, that and Monster drink. If he pulls that again, I think I'll have major criticism, but under the circumstances I can let it slide.

I think, if players can make peace with what Death Stranding is not, they can enjoy what it is.

The online system is fantastic, the world is photo-realistic and absolutely beautiful (the game reaches its peak visually when you’re up in the snowy mountains), the BT encounters are consistently tense, and as weird as it sounds, the walking is the best part about it. There are cutscenes aplenty to wade through with varying degrees of success (the late game cutscenes, while interesting, are a chore to finish), but you should come to Death Stranding for a wholly satisfying gaming experience that needs to be played to be believed, filled to the brim with a colourful cast of characters (and cameos aplenty from the film world to look out for!) and scenery to die for. The graphics are amazing. The decima engine has proven it can be used to create an amazing world and landscape, which can be fully explored as long as you have the equipment to do so (ladders, ropes, bridges, etc.) and the fact you can use the structures left by other players is an awesome concept as well

The story was interesting, even though it took a lot of time to be able to understand it.

The characters are memorable but that is probably because they have the dumbest names in gaming history.

The music is great. I added the sound track to my spotify and listen to it on my way to work.

The only cons are the tedious and repetitive gameplay loop, the crap enemies that only served to annoy me and hinder my progress, and the world, while fully explorable, gives ZERO incentive to explore it.

I think Kojima has something here. He just needs to create better gameplay around it. It is a beautiful game but it is one I will most likely never return to after beating it.

So in a game like that, they story has to be very compelling and a game loop that draws you in. After 5 hours, I can say that Death Stranding failed on both those counts.

So what we have is an interactive visual novel, mashed up with a walking simulator. A narrative that feels too mercurial to get to grips with that leads to a very unsatisfying and unrewarding experience.

Скучно, уныло, повторяющийся геймплей и много ходьбы. Понравилась графика мира и персонажей, так же приятные песни играют на фоне. Но люди явно не такой игры ожидали, судя по интригующим трейлерам. The purpose of Death Stranding was NEVER an exciting and addicting traditional "gameplay" experience. In fact, Hideo Kojima was purposely poking fun at gaming/social media culture and satirizing with social commentary at every turn. It cracks me up to read all the comments about Death Stranding boiling down to a glorified FedEx simulator...those people just DON'T GET IT. Hate to say it, but I just don't think the majority of people playing video games in this day and age have the attention span and mental capacity to truly appreciate an experience like this. Truly unique, and memorable.

The result? A perfectly balanced game as all things should be. *Insert Thanos meme*

Well, I am one of the lucky few who trully enjoyed this game and would score it a perfect 10 out of 10. But liking a game and reviewing it are two different things. I can clearly see why this game is not everyone's cup of tea. Yeah, story is good. Yeah, it has inovative ideas. It has a good message beneath it all but at the end of the day even I have to admit this game is BORING as hell. Come on, you have to deliver some cargo from A to B, how is that engaging? I wanna shoot some losers, I wanna make things go boom and I wanna create chaos. It's quite easy to see the argument of those who say this is a bad game.

The gameplay is quite simple. Deliver from A to B. However, as time progresses the game will try to keep you more engaged by progressively inscreasing the difficulty and adding a few more elements to keep things more balanced in terms of learning curve and difficulty. But when everything is said and delivered, you still have the same boring gameplay of walking for hours. And that is for sure boring as fu*k. For 50% of the gamers thats is.

However its hard to provide an argument in favor of this game. I found no chaos, I found no losers to shoot or bangs to explode. All I can say is that the game knows quite well that it is boring and grindy as hell and doesn't try to hide that. Even the main antagonist says it at some point: "Aren't you tired of all the grind?" So, why?

Its quite simple, balance. The gameplay is so simple that is easy to design an algorithm around it that will play with you along your delivery. The game knows where you are where you need to go. You will face terrorists that wanna steal your cargo. BTs and rain that will damage your cargo. Tricky terrain that is hard to traverse and all it takes is one dumb mistake and BANG, game over. The game is designed to punish you for not planning ahead. You take your delivery, it is time sensitive. You see a Terrorist camp in the distance, you plan your path to avoid losing time. Only to later find out that there was a river or a huge chasm in your path. But wait, you forgot to take the ladder. You still have options: You can either face the enemy or go back. You decide to go back, game knows it, suddenly it starts to rain, BB gets stressed. Now BTs show up. Decisions: you can face them, or maybe go through the terrorists. Tick tock, clock is ticking. You decide to sneak past the terrorists. The delivery time makes you impatient. You get too close to the terrorists and they ping you. Now they are chasing you. Maybe you are running low on stamina or maybe you didn't bring items to face them. So you run for your goal. They keep chasing you. On your way you stumble on a rock, you lose your balance, you fall down, cargo is damaged. You get up, you keep running. You finally manage to evade them. You take some time to catch your breath. It stops raining. The wather clears up. You see your goal in the distance. A song starts playing on the background. You casually take stroll and finish your order. You get ranked for being dumb, not taking a ladder and in the process damaging your cargo. You connect that "Node" to the network. Now you can see other players structures on your way back and the chasm that started it all no longer poses a threat because someone was not dumb like you and actually brought a ladder. You decide to build a bridge over it in order to help the community and yourself. You carry on with minimum threat risks. One day later you have 1000 likes and you feel appreciated. This is how I can describe one of my MANY adventures that I had delivering some cargo in this walking simulator. Yeah, when all said and done, it can be boring as hell, but every single delivery feels like an adventure. You feel rewarded for playing it smart and planning ahead and you feel punished for doing exactly the opposite. In the end, this is not everyone's cup of tea but you won't know if it is your cup of tea until you taste it.

Note: I allowed my roomate to play this game. I saw him stumbling on every fu**ing rock on a flat surface. I saw him attempting to climb rocks without the proper gear only to fall down on his back. I saw him sprint through a river only to be swept away by the water. I saw him running past a BT infested area with no regard for the threat that they could pose to his cargo. In the end, he said the game was trash, played it for like an hour and refused to play more. I imagine that the 50% who don't like the game felt the same way he did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Keep on keeping on! I really enjoyed my time playing the game. The story was very deep and engaging within an extravagant dystopia post apocalyptic setting. Imagine watching a movie and wondering what happens between scenes for the characters, this game “bridges” those moments with a nice dose of reality. Is there a lot of walking around, yeah there is until you are capable of building your own vehicles and then using zip lines. I dont see replay value other than to look for easter eggs but you don’t have to start a new game for that. I believe i missed out on some missions because I didn’t keep up with my mail until later. I would replay just for those as it seems like they have to be completed at specific times and not at the endgame open play.

I will admit this may take a particular gaming palate for someone to fully appreciate this work of art. Because that is what Kojima has created here.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
