Death Stranding is an extremely unique and 'different' video game, that very clearly shows Kojima and his team's passion and efforts. I can definitely understand how this game may be "boring" to many people, but the narrative and intimate experience, at least to me, was imaginative, fresh and even relatable. Death Stranding is not the kind of game that can be appreciated by watching someone else play, so I recommend anyone who is reading this review to try out this generation's greatest walking simulator for yourself.

Story is slightly confusing, but extremely engaging, characters are mostly well-developed and the gameplay is meaningful. Death Stranding will be a cherished experience for years to come.

In death stranding though, you can decide where you want to do these fetch quests to get certain kinds of gagets and upgrades, which makes it alot lessless tedious. What this game has done right is an absolutely stunning environment, great world building and great characters. I can't even begin to say how fun it is, if your one to get lost in a game or in movies, you will definitely get lost in this world. If you thought that the initial trailers were very interesting and you enjoy when a a game that isn't afraid to have slow moments, and let you really get the feeling of being on a journey across hostile terrain, then this game is for you. You can build useful structures that other players have access to and can "Like" which lets you know you're being useful to someone else playing the game. This is a highly satisfying feature which contributes to the whole experience, and even the story, as it is about connecting people.

The main thing for me, is how I'm simply addicted to delivering cargo. It sounds simple, but there's something incredibly satisfying about taking on an order of cargo, planning your route, the tools you'll need, and making your delivery without a scratch, knowing that your planning paid off when you get an S rating.

I can see how this game might not be for everyone but it I personally think it is a highly ambitious attempt at a new single-player game and it'd be a shame not to give it a go if you've got a PS4. Particularly if you're a fan of Kojima's unique, creative weirdness. Go for it.

When I feel hard to deliver a parcel, there is someone deliver the parcel for me. So, I also create new path, create buildings, donate weapons and resources, deliver lost parcels for other players. And I got a lot of thumb up from other players. This is the real content of this game, alone while connected. Those who give 0/10 reviews are those who never connected with others. In this game, if you never help others, others never help you. Or maybe they just never really started the game, just stop in the first few hours (which are three long tutorial levels).

I love the idea of "chill gameplay" where you walk around stunning landscapes transporting cargo, listening to great music by Low Roar... it was absolutely delightful!
The relaxing aspect switches out regularly for a more stressful and frightening one when you must travel through BT or enemy territory, or cross over especially dangerous terrain.

The story was BREATHTAKING! I absolutely loved it so much! It was the best video game story I played in ages... I can't even compare it to anything! If you like dark supernatural stuff, you'll love this!
Also, great acting especially by Norman Reedus and Tommie Earl Jenkins - the mo cap is unreal!
I believe that there are people who will find the gameplay rather boring, but if you are someone who can put a bit of thought into your games and like hidden gems like Shadow of the Colossus, then try Death Stranding and you won't be disappointed!

Death Stranding is an artistic masterpiece with advertisement stickers slapped onto it. Don't get me wrong, the game is excellent, and I hope that elements of this game become incorporated in many future games. But there are a few aspects to the game that almost threw this game off the rails.
    --1st the positive:
The graphics, oh my goodness the graphics were superb, and make the game an excellent capstone to the PS4 generation.
The acting by the cast was excellent. The actors really draw you in and make you feel connected to the story, which is great given the abstract nature of the story.
The balancing system has revolutionized the way a player navigates the map. Until THIS GAMES, map navigation for games was little more than point in a direct then press up. Now, the weight you carry and the direction you take really matters, and makes a player feel connected to the world in the way other games simply haven't done before. Which also plays nicely into the core theme of the game: connection.
Using every aspect of the controller. Need to sooth your BB? Gently rock the controller. Not sure if you are going the right way in those mountains, quick toggle the map with the touch pad. And don't forget to keep your fingers and thumbs ready at all times to keep balance as you explore. How is your BB doing btw, just listen to the sounds emitting from the controller, which is usually held close to a players torso, just where the BB is on Sam. This really helps the player feel the game, not just look at it.
The use of objects developed by other players that are randomly placed in the map makes the player feel connected to the rest of the death stranding community, and doesn't make the player feel so lonely, and gives the game a perspective that we are not in the great quest alone. There is a real sense of community even though it is a single player game.
--2nd the not so positive (or downright negative):
The maps are so cluttered with rock that use of vehicles is almost pointless until you've played the game a while and developed roads or at least become very familiar with the terrain on foot, which can take a very long time, but the vehicles are introduced right away in the game, making them seem like a pointless use of resources.
The story is heavily backloaded to the end of the game. So a lot of what is going on seems convoluted, which I understand it was the intent to give the game some narrative twists for excitement, but the game at times seems so convoluted that it's just downright confusing at times, and distracts from a sense of purpose, making the game seem to drag on without a point at times.
(SPOILER) There should have been a stronger connection to the character of Mama. The main character Sam lost his wife and daughter, that is made clear in the very beginning. One might think that meeting someone else who lost a child would have more to talk about. And since meeting Mama is about half way through the game, a stronger connection would have helped to improve Sams character development. Since he does like being touched, having physical contact, even just a hug would serve to show Sams progression at this point, instead of just dropping it in at the end as "Well, I guess you don't have your phobia anymore. SURPRISE!".
Lastly, the shameless product placement. Thank goodness it is limited to just one area, the shelters where Sam rests and cleans up. But the use of Monster Energy Drinks and an advertisement for another Norman Reedus show is distracting to say the least, and in a game this beautiful it seems almost downright disgusting. It pulls the player out of the game. And while there are several points where the game seems to break the 4th wall, this is by far the worst way to do it. I feel like someone dropped their hotdog on the Mona Lisa and got ketchup and mustard all over it. Honestly, if the rest of the game wasn't so incredible and spectacular, this one thing would have ruined it for me. If it wasn't for this, I would have easily given this game a 9/10 or 10/10. I personally hope Kojima Productions makes enough money from this game to never have to even think about making that same mistake again.

Many people are labeling this game a "walking simulator" which is drastically neglecting all of the various gameplay mechanics. You do indeed start off walking for the first few hours but as you unlock items and upgrades you soon have a massive inventory to manage with several methods of transportation at your disposal. There is much more to the game than simply "going from point A to point B". You walk, you climb, you rappel, you drive, you zip-line, you sneak, and you ultimately find the best route and method to traverse the massive environment. Of course, you're delivering packages the whole time, reconnecting society, and building your own unique game in many ways while either avoiding or engaging terrorists and ghosts. There are weapons to use for combat, ranging from the standard to the bizarre. There are boss fights which are spectacularly crafted. On top of everything you're engrossed with an incredibly strange and moving story that creates such an original setting you'll feel compelled to learn more about it. Death Stranding is a massive achievement in gaming and a truly original game that is hard to pinpoint to any particular genre.
The graphics are astounding, some of the best ever created. The attention to detail in the environment and character models is insane to the point where you'll find yourself just soaking in its beauty. The voice-acting is excellent, and the story is sort of a cross between Mad Max and Poltergeist. You will walk away from this game feeling both confused and exhilarated if you take the time to actually explore everything it has to offer.
The best aspect of the game is being able to build your own experience with the various tools and structures you'll need to complete every delivery. The environment is very harsh in this game and every part of it provides different obstacles to overcome. Inventory and item management is very in-depth just like it always was in Metal Gear Solid games. The difference with Death Stranding is that you can only carry what you're actually able to hold, and you can see every item on Sam in real-time. It's not like most other games where you have this unrealistic arsenal tucked away in your back pocket. Item management becomes an interesting mini-game in itself, along with balancing your character when you're carrying too much cargo.
This game is everything I wanted it to be and more. It's a very different game from what is typically accepted by the mainstream which is definitely why it's being hated and misunderstood. Consider that in most games, even games like Grand Theft Auto, you're either killing a bunch of people or transporting objects from one location to another. This game simply puts the emphasis on transporting and embraces that aspect wholly. You will feel challenged to see how much you can transport, the best condition you can maintain for your cargo, the speed of your deliveries, etc. For all of these reasons I feel this game is a masterpiece and I hope this inspires a trend of new gameplay styles. Kojima has pushed the boundaries of gaming once again with Death Stranding.

The connection & empathy really is needed in the real world as well as in the gaming world.
The industry needs a major change in gaming and this adds to that change.

For way to long due to shareholders & money grabbing CEO'S has held back way too much innovation and talent that is need so badly in the gaming industry.
In truth in the majority of gaming all we have had instead is years of nothing but Rinse & Repeat games and micro transactions.

One note, it's a bit "easy" to me, so I recommend "hard" difficulty (can change it whenever you want). This game has me thinking both when I'm playing and about the real world more than any game ever -- one part of that is the "like" system in the game, which is a kind of meta for some of the game's themes, and I love it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding is a fantastic game with intriguing and fun gameplay, logically coherent background but too much cutscenes. I haven't played a lot of Hideo Kojima games but this one is at least way better than MGSV.

The gameplay itself is outstanding in the whole game industry. It is indeed a misplacement to categorize it as a walking simulator which the mechanisms are almost nothing or designed solely to serve the narration (like in Edith Finch). The core playable content is like Human: Fall Flat which is an adventure with puzzles that is enhanced in freedom by a bit of physical simulation and sandbox. As the game proceeds, you will be able to use a large amount of tools with upgrades to make the delivery, and the use of them can get very deep.

Building a world together is not a fresh idea but it can easily become homogeneous and repetitive when it comes to strategy games, or require impossible amount of resources. The game applied a smart asynchronuous online playing that implement this idea while bringing some fun from social media.

I didn't mention anything about the soundtrack and graphics, because those are peripheral elements of a game as a kind of art. However this game is a masterpiece in interactive art. On my opinion, the best of a game them in other kind of arts is that the background and plot can be deeply embedded in the game mechanisms and in Death Stranding the relationship between them is very tight. For example, the mechanism of deleting facilities is the timefall, which also account for why you need to make deliveries in person. The growth system is well designed, unlike some media said it is nothing, the previous EXP in other games is granted the meaning of LIKES and each kind of level will give our character Sam different kinds of buffs. There are even more outstanding details that make the game coherent but I don't want to spoil them here.

All in all, 10 for the gameplay and -1 for the cutscenes, I don't really care about the decorations on the prototype.

Instead of appreciating a new, complete and unique single-player AAA experience that clearly carries the vision of a single man, unaltered by the publishers greed and without any kind of microtransactions or other monetization practices, they act like children wailing in their own sh*t.

The game robbed you of nothing, it never lied to you nor deceived you - It always showed you what it was: A slow-paced narrative driven game that's focused on making deliveries, featuring a vast amount of rich, complex traversal and item management mechanics, and not your mass fodder "pew pew" and "bam bam". And in my opinion, after playing quite a chunk of it already, just those traversal mechanics are deeper than most of today's games full gameplay mechanics, especially in the AAA segment.

Even if you don't have as broad a gaming horizon yet and still don't have enough of today's mainstream games - Why not just be happy for the game and the people that like it, while continuing to play the stuff that YOU like instead of downright sh*tting on and making fun of something you don't find interesting (and don't even fully sem to understand because you haven't played it, judging by most of the "reviews" I see on here).

Basically you are a porter, delivering stuff to people around a post apocalyptic america. You have to plan routes, connect with different npc's, use vehicles, stealth through enemy camps, avoid or fight monsters/bosses. But the online play brings the real joy. Because you can build stuff in the world that makes traversal easier for you and other players. See a cliff? Place a rope so every player can use it for climbing. Its a really addicting part of the game. You really feel like you can accomplish something, working together.
But be warned, the first chapter takes its time to explain everything to you, after that you are already mastering most gameplay concepts.
If you like Kojima's other games you will like this as well, trust me

I’m gonna be honest I was really looking forward to this game pre E3 showings etc... I loved Hideo Kojima’s metal gear solid games and I knew the guy is a genius and all his games with Konami have been nothing short of spectacular!

Hence I was expecting the same from his new studio. However I was really disappointed with the press release up front and average reviews! I almost said that I won’t buy it because I’ve got so many other brilliant games in my backlog. But then I thought to myself hang on a minute I did this all once before when Days Gone released and ended up not buying only to purchase it a few months later and to be blown away by such a great game!! Plus it’s a Kojima game how could I pass it up?

So glad I listened to my inner voice and purchased Death Stranding day 1! The game is a masterpiece and Kojima is still just as talented as he was with Konami. I don’t want to go into spoilers and details but I’m now 27hours through and on chapter 3 still and the game shows no signs of giving up, finishing or slowing down, actually I think I’m about half way through and I’ve loved every moment of it. There are very few games which make me shout OMG and make it difficult for my eyes to believe what they are seeing and experiencing that is exactly what this game has done multiple times, be it the opening act where your first walking down that mountain with that amazing view and the game starts playing “Don’t be so serious” or the first time where you lay your eyes upon Port Knot City from a distance and another song plays! It’s unbelievable I’m telling you and I wish I could experience those things again for the first time.

At first it can all look a bit complicated with so many menus and data at your disposal but a few hours in and it’s all very easy to control.

Any improvements? Yes of course, I wish there was more FMV videos like what Konami is known for in MGS. Sure there is a hologram image of the owner of every new base/safe house you reach in the game but it’s not that exciting. What would have been amazing is if the people were actually there at each of the bases and you met them in a proper fmv scene. That would have made meeting all the people at all the bases even more exciting and something to look forward to. Maybe there was budget constraints so they chose this route, anyway here’s to a sequel that comes soon, really hope they add this in it.

Death Stranding is not your standard game, to be honest you wouldn’t even be able to explain it to anyone for them to get excited over it, it’s an experience, an experience which once you embark on becomes highly addictive and one that you just can’t put down. It’s a very stress free, relaxing and fun to play especially when you come home from work and have maybe an hour to play and chill. The game is a masterpiece and I can’t wait to see where the epic adventure goes next! Buy it and play it without any doubts and you won’t regret it.

An easy 10/10 for me and one of the best games ive ever played!

Mules: without any cargo the just wouldn’t care about you, but if you have any they’ll try to steal or break It.Like they’re will hitting you with sticks, that’s cause damage on your cargo, or when they hitting you with stick, you can fall, and when you fall, your cargo damages, and Mules can steal your cargo with they’re weapons. You actually won’t need to fight with mules, you’re just need to run away, than larger your cargo, than harder to run away from them. BT’s: when they’ll catch you, they’re shoot down the top of your cargo, then they hit you on the ground, then call a giant BT.Most of giant BT attack knock you down, when you’re knocking down your cargo damages, and it can eat you and cause void out, and void out, will discourage you, to get your way. In conclusion, I must to say that I liked to play Death Stranding, It wasn’t boring for me to play It, and now Death Stranding is one of my favorite games. Expand

Maybe not the best game in several years, but definitely the most impactful and innovative in relation to gameplay. I really enjoyed these 65 hours. Expand

This game is a masterpiece. Do not buy this game expecting non-stop action, however. This game is about a lot more than game play. The music, artwork, story, and acting performances are all amazing. Skip this game is you constantly need flashing lights and loud noises to keep you interested.

Some people say that it's stupid, because it's about inventory management and not action. And that's why I liked it so much. It's "oldschool", where you have to think a bit about what you are going against in this particular mission, instead of just rushing in. I guess oldschool gamers will appreciate it more than the younger gamers.

    The game has it's flaws:
    - boss fights are not that challenging
    - the edge is taken off a bit when you are equipped with weapons
    - the game is linear and doesn't that much encourage you to do side quests, as they seem unworthy, for the most part

    But it has it's pro's:
    - visuals
    - cast
    - story (for the most part)
    - music (!)
    - the mechanics
    - being a completely different thing

Death Stranding shines as something different, althrough very much Kojim-ish to it's core. It's a welcome breath of fresh air blown straight into Konami's face.

Instead of buying a 10th FIFA or 20th COD - buy Death Stranding. If you won't like, at least you will experience something else. And that's always worth your $ and time.

The game is pretty fun. When people call it a walking simulator they don't realize how fun it actually is to walk. It's sort of addicting delivering all of the packages. Finding the best route. Finding the best route. Planning the weather. Trying to avoid Mules and Bts. Also you're always playing a mini game with yourself trying to keep your balance. The combat is pretty lacking though. The guns feel bad to shoot and your melee attacks consist of a 3 hit combo only. Of course there are other things but those aren't worth mentioning. The story also does get confusing. I feel like Hideo Kojima was trying to be confusing and not just making the story. It's confusing for the sake of being confusing. Also the menus feel really cluttered. You go to your inventory and it's just a sea of blocks of words in your face so it's not easy to navigate. Sam could've also been a better character. He did have his own quirks like hating being touched and not really caring about the world. He was always quiet tho. It was surprising to hear him talk. Before playing this game I thought BB was going to be a very annoying crybaby. Well he is a crybaby but not annoying. I genuinely cared about him. When he cried I wanted to cheer him up by rocking him to sleep. When he laughed I also smiled. Throughout the game you see Sam and BB develop a very adorable bond as they travel the world. Speaking of the world I thought it was gorgeous. You can tell they put care into making every single inch of it. But the map isn't just pretty. Its dangerous and I'm not talking about the enemies I'm talking about the map itself. You have to pay attention to almost every rock so Sam doesn't lose balance and trip(which will damage cargo and make BB cry) you have to pay attention to not get hit by falling boulders and stay warm on top of the freezing mountains.

I think this game is worth a buy and is a solid 8/10

It truly is magnificent when you understand the concept of the "online" world and start building structures that make your deliveries easier(but contribute to other players as well). But once you get to know these things the whole process becomes repetitive and you find yourself wishing for the next cutscene to come. If it wasn't for all this mystery that surrounds the world of the Death Stranding I would probably leave the game be. But oh boy the story.... it is excellent. You may find some stuff you encounter a little bit cringy or cliche but believe me when I tell you that the 3 - 4 last hours make up for everything. Everything is magically coming together explaining all the things that wouldnt make sense to you, blowing your brain to pieces. Great graphics, great actors and fantastic music make this journey super realistic and emotional. The whole experience makes up for the not so interesting at times gameplay and is a must play for someone that enjoys a very good story and a more slow paced gaming experience. Even if you didn't like the game you have to admit that these are the games that everyone would like to see. These games are truly innovative and push the gaming industry to the next level.

The catharsis experienced after delivering a heavy load, it taking no damage, while going through some incredibly harsh terrain is unmatched by any game I've played recently giving it a fantastic game loop.
The story as well is brilliant, well paced with enough tid-bits of information to keep you hooked throughout the duration, and completely explained in the ending, leaving no big mysteries to force a sequel that may never come.

The game mechanics while solid, can be repetitive, few enemy types and a standard way to defeat them leaves it feeling relatively simple and while that isn't the game's focus some more enemy types or some difficultly scaling would allow the game to keep the challenge toward the endgame and make side missions a more important part of the journey. With this the game feels like a mountain, the difficulty in the early game is slowly chipped away as you get new items and weapons that allow BT and Mules to become trivial over time, and while that may lead to some satisfaction, looking back down the trail you've climbed it does leave you feeling like you've beaten everything towards the end. A tip to players to increase the challenge would be to eschew weapons all together, leaving it only to your wits and resourcefulness and the way i'd recommend playing, keeping the difficulty and stealth an absolute requirement throughout the whole game, rather than being able to kick the door down in the second half.

Even saying that, the traversal itself is what makes the game, borrow from a friend and give it five hours of your time. Though if it hooked you as much as it did me, your friend may not get it back!

Use your heads before assuming that any of them have ever even seen the start screen. I’m 55 hours in and it just keeps getting better. As much of that time has been spent cleaning up trophies as opposed to polishing off the story. I have at minimum 100 hours left and each time I think the game is done surprising me with technological upgrades to better aid my journeys, I’m surprised all over again. You get a trike, a truck and a hover cargo craft you can ride on as early as episode 3. You get highways to ride clear across the central US from end to end. You get several varieties of grenades, non-lethal guns, various decoys and all the makings of artistic excellence from a man amidst a very strong departure from the slave owners who once drove him into the ground. Kojima made a game where we help one another. The social strand system is INVALUABLE and has made the game everything it is. The maps are also sprawling, daunting and gorgeously designed to the point of putting everything to utter shame with far less by way of assets. Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
