This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    Pros:
    - Control's world is intriguing and really makes you want to read every collectible you come across. While the main story itself may not be groundbreaking, you always want to learn more about the FBC and their history
    - The Oldest House is an incredible setting that oozes style and diverse environments
    - Gameplay feels nice and tight and the abilities Jesse (the protagonist) has give it a great sense of verticallity. By the end you are essentially playing as Jean Grey with guns.
    - The universe it shares with Alan Wake seems very promising
    - Quite visually impressive... when it isn't glitching out.
    - The game's use of architecture and colors combined with it's supernatural setting provide for some of the best levels I've played this year
    - While not all of the characters are as memorable as they should be, Dr. Casper Darling makes up for all of them and has turned into one of my all time favorite fictional characters ever
    - The game has a well structured trophy list

    Cons:
    - Bugs, bugs, bugs and more bugs. Control runs very poorly at times on a PS4 slim, with FPS drops that are as bad as 5-10 fps. This usually happens when **** is going down and tends to take you out of the game. Constant texture pop-ins are also a problem.
    - Control has a serious difficulty problem. Jesse usually dies in about 3-4 hits which is very punishing considering how many tough enemies you usually end up facing at once. The devs have added an invincibility mode you can use which is nice if you get very frustrated but it doesn't compensate a poorly made difficulty system.

Overall Control is a glitch-filled masterpiece which could have been a 10/10 if it was well optimized and had an ending that was a tiny bit better. However it's still a must-play and serves as an amazing origin for the Remedy-verse. It gets an 8/10

I fell in love with minimalist level design , metal musics and also fantastic gameplay. One of most unique games I ever played on ps4. But some fps drops was annoying but there is not huge on ps4pro. Control was in bad luck to release in same year as sekiro. If it released one year later surely win the goty.

At least i got the game on sale for $30, just sad that i don’t think I will finish it :( after you die (which happens alot) you have to go through the same area & kill the same enemies over & over! You'll probably die once or twice each big fight, but then you learn and improve and feel great. All the way past the Ashtray Maze (a masterpiece), I really liked the game. Unfortunately, that game ends all to soon. And a new, horrible game takes its place.

The curtain drops and suddenly you're playing a very bad Dark Souls. The difficulty scales in the most infuriating ways for every side quest and the end of the main quest. Long load times and long runs back make for gameplay loops of just dying over and over to have a slim chance at the perfection needed to succeed. When you do win a fight, it's usually because you found a cheesy spot where the AI is too dumb to engage and you just fling auto-aimed bricks. Otherwise, it's nonstop homing attacks and enemy design that couldn't be worse or lazier if it tried.

The Jukebox is an embarrassment to good game design. The weapon upgrades and customization feels so poorly balanced that there's often a "correct" option. Although, even that can be hard to tell because this game loves to punish you for trying anything new at this point. You'll be dead before you know what did or didn't work.

Add in bugs, crashes, and performance issues on the PS4 and your nightmare is complete. One loading screen after another. If you enjoy that amount of grind and masochism, then I hope you enjoy Control. Otherwise, play something with competent balance that respects your time.

I played this on a PS4 Pro on a 1080p television but it's stylistic art design makes it a joy to marvel at on any device & yes it had a few issues where it would momentarily freeze and stutter after pausing & sometimes textures would take a while to load upon first boot up. But I can look over these moments, as they weren't all that frequent.

    My 2 down points are:

Save points, considering that the gameplay was very challenging I was surprised when I was sometimes then forced way, way back to a checkpoint from 30 minutes ago.. yes it only respawns a small amount of enemies but still, I feel that checkpoints may have been a good option.. however, I do appreciate that the 'souls-like' formula does present an appropriate challenge.

my other issue is small & shouldnt really be mentioned in a review.. but the game is beautiful, as I've mentioned earlier its stylistic art style makes you constantly tap that share button for a screenshot.. but the Photo Mode is something to be desired, it's there and has very basic features but after playing games like Uncharted, horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-man etc. it's hard to go back to such a basic photo mode.

Overall I'd say if you're looking for a game like no other & like exploration, this is a very perfect match for you.

    - Dr. Hartmann boss (3rd fight) ist he most annoying and badly designed boss I have ever seen. Extremely unfun, unfair and stupid. I have played Dark Souls, Nioh and Sekiro, but this was the first boss where I had to turn on the cheat mode
    - Combat is a little bit repetetive
    - Story makes no sense, but maybe this is intended
    - Annoying difficulty spikes that make you wanna rage quit. When you die, you have to clear all the enemy waves again, and this can take some time
    - Devs wanted game to be Dark Souls, but it doesnt feel right for this type of game. Too hard
    - Quest markers are not precise enough, you have to search areas like an idiot
    - There are some stupid quests like an Arcade mode or an Expedition which are boring and uncreative
    - Spawning mobs during boss fights
    - Regenerating bosses
    - Mobs respawn if you leave and room and return immediately

Including the DLCs and nearly all missions, I needed 84 hours (I am a slow player).

    Pros:
Solid story with solid characters, mysterious plot that keeps you playing, incredible lore, fun core gameplay and great sound design. Great soundtrack.
    Cons:
Terrible checkpoint system that has you spawn at the latest control point you accessed whenever you die, which means you have to spend time waiting for the loading screen AND traversing back to the place you were at. This can be really frustrating.
The game punishing you for dying by taking away 10% of your source. This only adds insult to the injury that is the checkpoint system.
A combination of a bad health system and random difficulty spikes. Several enemies in the game as well as bosses in side mission have cheap attacks that do a ton of damage. You will find yourself getting killed with just 2 or 3 hits a lot. I have health 6 unlocked along with 2 personal mods that increase my health and even still enemies can melt your health if you **** up just once. The blue orbs from killed enemies hardly give you back any health and I think that being able to carry consumables to restore your health would have been great.
Shielded enemies can be frustrating to fight at times because their shield regenerate quickly.
The game's mini-map can be awkward and difficult to use at times and you find yourself getting lost frequently. Jukebox expeditions are pointless since you can get prime & absolute mods by just playing the game.
Occasional frame rate drops that last 2-4 seconds on both the base PS4 and the PS4 Pro (especially the base PS4) during intense fights. The game also stutters briefly every time after it autosaves.

It's a good thing I waited for a price drop after I saw DigitalFoundry's video on the poor performance on consoles. Had I bought it at launch and payed $60 for it, I would have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10 because there's no way that I would consider massive performance issues on launch acceptable. The game in it's current state is relatively stable. All in all, and 7/10 game.

Inside an interesting setting, but the plot is something that we've seen 100 times already. Story in Quantum Break was better and much more ambitious.
There is no much change in the scenery, and for a game of this length I would expect something more than just inside of the building and astral plane, and that's it.

Core gameplay is very outdated. It feels like the game from late 90s or early 2000. The whole game is just enemy spam over and over again. Some part of the game is either too dark or too bright or both at the same time, even if you calibrate the brightness, so you can't see anything on the screen, makes the game nearly unplayable. The map navigation is the worst in history of game industry.

Remedy.
Remedy!

There's a lot of lore to read which is great, but the why you have to traverse the already read list of documents until you find the one that is yet to be read is annoying.

The puzzles in this game are incredibly dense. You will never figure them out without using a guide. Solutions dont feel organic. You will walk away from this game wondering how anyone was supposed to figure that out. Beyond that the story is convulted and pretentious. (Even for a kojima fan). The destruction and special effects is top notch . Unfortunately not enough to redeem this game for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. **SPOILERS about game mechanics but not story** This is a fun game. They flushed the combat mechanics out. Evade with quick dodges, shoot, telekinetically throw **** (like chunks of the environment) at or (with grenades launched at you) back at bad guys, then repeat. There are only two useful guns of the few available. Control's version of a high-power rifle called Pierce and a shot-gun, Shatter. Both can injure shielded enemies while other weapons are only effective against weaker enemies. Hence Pierce and Shatter's usefulness. All of which your one universal grey gun morphs into. The powers all feel useful and enabled the game developers to make some great choices in a level layout that they couldn't have otherwise. Specifically, you can float, so areas on the other side of gaps or on top of a tall structure are now accessible. You gain weapons and powers as the game progresses at a rate that is enjoyable and rewarding and fits with the timing of the story. The color palette, theme, and overall look is grey: grey concrete, grey metal, and brown wood, with dark-colored carpets and looks as you might imagine a well funded U.S. government facility (in Hollywood). The story is interesting and delivered through some dialogue with NPC's, but mostly **** you have to read. Tons and tons of **** to read in fact. There are some videos that add to the story and interestingly they are live-action. My chief complaint is the save/respawn system. No matter what you do, how far you complete an area you will always load and respawn to a point (you unlock) that is at the BEGINNING of the area you are in. It is intensely annoying to retrace your steps ad Infinitum. Control's different areas look very similar, so it's easy to get lost (even with the map). I gave up playing more than once because I couldn't bother to tread the same steps again, fight the same guys again, just to get to where I was before I died or had to stop playing. This seems like an easily fixed issue. Regardless, the game is still worth a play. Even if it is a wee bit short. I'd post this review on the Epic store, but it's a POS and doesn't have user reviews. In the end this is a game that stays with you once you turn it off. Definitely worth a higher score than what it has here. I guess many people want more action or more of a multitude of things. But this is a balance of game play, story & combat, . and for me it balances perfectly.
The down sides are maybe a bit too much of her internal dialogues, and the complex and always cumbersome personal and weapons mods. And it is true, it does glitch a bit but nothing that is bothering and worth it of it is the price for all the details I each room.
In the end I give it a 9,5 but will give it a 10 here to raise the score.

You always just enter a new room and throw rocks towards red glowing humanoids around you, shooting with whatever gun you have while waiting for the power to recharge. There’s literally just one interesting opponent in the game (the invisible screaming thingie that appears just a second before attacking you).

The text logs that you find spread across The Oldest House help create a very interesting fictional universe, *almost* to the point where I begin to question whether real world objects are actually as "dead" as they seem, or could they in fact have some connection to, say, alternate realities?

Level design is incredible, art direction reminds a fair bit of the tv show LOST (in particular the parts about The Dharma Initiative), which is really not a bad thing. It has this old school science vibe which I find very cool. A lot of Jungian psychology and the like for those interested in that, as well as a huge pinch of mysticism.

Graphics and animations are top notch, and my only criticism is that the game's environments sometimes get repetitive with its brutalist-styled architecture. It's really not bad but a bit more change of scenery every now and then could have mixed well with the theme of the game. There is, however, one excellent part of the game that stands out in this respect, but you'll see that when you play it..

Since I'm half-Finnish I also have to praise the game for including Ahti, his tango music, accent and overall take on the world around him... whoever he is...

The combat is rather tough but rewarding once you get the hang of it's many mechanics and options. The story is fine with inspirations from the X-Files and Twilight Zone but characters are possibly the weakest part of the game but the style and aesthetics more then make up for with almost every frame looking like an abstract painting brought to life by a disturbed artist. The fluid gameplay with great art direction is a must play if your a fan of Remedy or any third person shooter for that matter. This is my game of the year by a long shot. Expand

The whole game uses a metroidvania style, where you return to earlier zones, unlocking new parts of them. This is accomplished through security card levels and quests rather than items, but, it's still a good way of navigating the environment.

The story itself is well told and more interesting than most games these days. It doesn't hold your hand and explain things. However, if you listen to the dialogue, and talk to the NPCs you'll piece it together. If you are really invested, there's plenty of additional material to find in the game and read.

The only real weakness for me is that enemy variety does get a bit repetitive after a while.

Combat was great for me. More difficult enemies appear as you go, and I think they set up the hardest content as the side mission bosses, which means you can skip the biggest challenges if you wanted to. That said, those are some really interesting fights, and it would be a shame to miss them. You can come back to them at any point with new abilities, weapon forms and mods to help.

Control points were a lot more frequent than I expected given what I'd read in some reviews. That wasn't an issue for me at all. And I had no glitches playing on a ps4.

It's just such a gorgeous, coherent place to be in, the art direction is stunning at every level. It's hard to get more specific without spoiling things but the storyline to me was satisfying with some very bad-ass elements to it. The game looks stunning esp with lighting (seems raytraced?) and the sound design (and, without spoiling too much, music) just pulls you in.

Too many qualities. Too many flaws.
    Amazing history and character development.
Huge unbalance between regular encounters and boss battles. The scenario is crucial too many times to decide between succes and failure. It's like the gameplay was not polished enough to be at the same level as the storytelling.

Something different in a good way. RayTracing, graphics, story good. It was exciting and a good setting with the abilities (it is not just shooting)
German synch was not good. The Foundation DLC not good, i dont like caves

The game is beautiful: story, controls, action and missions ( main & side). The ultimate edition a must have, great expanding and experience. The only con for me is the frame drop on PS4.

I had heavily anticipated this game since its very first announcement, and I was relieved to see the hype I had for it be satisfied. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for the two DLC packs to release before I reviewed this game to see if I would change my score of 7 to something else. Unfortunately, as you can see by the score, I didn't think too much of the DLC. But let me say that it was still good DLC, but you wouldn't be missing out on much if you didn't play it. Now the main game. The story was very confusing and I had no idea what the hell was going on. It tries to be creative in ways that, in my opinion, don't work out too well. The game had a huge frame dropped after you unpause so I just opened the other menu instead of pausing throughout the game. The main character was a very bland protagonist and could've been replaced by anyone else and nothing would change. The map was confusing to navigate at times, often leading me to get lost. The weapon forms were creative and while I would've liked to see a few more forms, I was fine with the ones I had. The supporting characters were some of my favorite parts throughout the story, mostly because they had more personality than Jesse. The cutscenes look very pretty but the way some characters talk looked off to me. There's honestly a lot of good things in this game, although I would only recommend playing it if you really want to. Since I first played Max Payne on pc, I was 18 years old, (that's around 20 yrs ago BTW) I was blown away by the storytelling, the fantastic atmosphere and experience, then later on I got the same feeling playing as Alan wake.
Now playing this gem, I can't stop playing it, I'm almost at the end and I want to see more, this world Remedy have created is massive but it never feels empty.

Graphics are great, everything looks polished and beautiful, the attention to detail is superb. Only downside is after I press pause and want to continue playing the game again it freezes for a couple of seconds but doesn't crash, and there are some minor framedrops, but considering how vast the world is I'm ok with it.

Sound is spot on, the characters are very well played, the ambient sounds makes it feel alive, voices are good, nothing bad to say about them.

All in all I'm very satisfied with the game, I'm hoping for a part 2 for the ps5! Please make it happen!

    Thank you

Gameplay is really good, amazing visuals though the graphics could be better and there's a lot of fps drop in combat. Personally, the story started really well and had huge potential but it seemed rushed near the ending.

Really enjoyed this game. I found that it captured my interest very quickly when I started playing it; it then rapidly developed into a game I couldn't put down.

The mechanics of the game start off fairly simple, and it does a great job of gradually drip feeding new tools and weapons throughout the game, such that you never feel overwhelmed or lost with all the different options.

The mechanics of the game start off fairly simple, and it does a great job of gradually drip feeding new tools and weapons throughout the game, such that you never feel overwhelmed or lost with all the different options. However, before you know it, you'll have a range of different abilities and munitions in your arsenal ready to be unleashed. In particular, once you unlock the levitate ability, the combat system and overall gameplay becomes particularly exciting, unique and satisfying.

The storyline and the world are absolutely fascinating. It has a really intriguing sci-fi mystery about it. No long cutscenes or huge documents to read, really supporting the immersion. I'm often bored with game storylines but found this truly captivating.

I enjoyed the fact that your ammo "recharges" rather than needing to constantly scavenge for resources. This is a good example of where the developers have done a great job of removing certain boring or frustrating elements that you have in similar games and allowed you to just have fun with the gameplay. I did have one major frustration the fact that you lose 10% of your "source" (money) every time you die though. I felt like this really discourages risk-taking and experimentation, and means that some challenging boss fights, and the jukebox missions can end up being quite a frustration as you see your bankroll dwindling (I'd recommend the developers watch a TED talk called "The Super Mario Effect" to learn more about the negative psychology of such a mechanic!).

The navigation was very tricky at times. I appreciate the fact that the developers perhaps don't want to ruin the immersion by putting huge markers into the game world, but the map is tough to follow and - from what I've seen of other reviews and comments online - I'm not the only person to feel like this.

Overall, a really excellent game with fun gameplay, superb graphics (especially some of the close-ups during conversations) and a brilliant storyline.

Expand

I would also like to point out that even though I'm giving this game a great review that others like my cousin would not be so generous. He had problems with the no difficulty setting and didn't even make it halfway through the game. He also didn't like the checkpoints were so far from where he died. I do feel like they should have remedied the situation for other types of players as it would have attracted a much broader audience. If you like intense combat that always keeps you guessing then I recommend this game completely. Expand

Just the first hours of this game blew me away. The visual style, the combat mechanics, the upgrade system and the characters just seem so interesting and connect very well. Courtney Hope's performance as Jesse has been great so far, even with the internal dialogue being a little overused, the Janitor is even more interesting (and funny). There's a great incentive for exploration and it's rewarding that we can find boxes with upgrade materials like Jedi Fallen Order. The environment is one of the best parts too, acting like that Doctor Strange scene where everything is upside down, added to the fact that it's very destructible, only thing that I wish I could do is climb walls or something like that. The combat makes a good balance between run n' gun and dodge/cover play-style, and since you have both the gun and your own innate abilities there will always be a variety of attacks you can do. The weapon modding is satisfying, it gives you 4 types of weapon fire rate plus upgrades and the personal modding utility is a nice addition as well. On the other side of the battle, the enemies are increasingly difficult and the variation is enough to keep testing your abilities. The puzzle parts of this game I didn’t expect, and so far I’ve had a hard time doing them but I like the dynamic - challenge that this creates. Last thing I wanted to talk about is cinematic and cut-scenes, Matthew Porretta, my man, you did one hell of a job. I’d usually skip through this parts but every one of them I have watched and seeing you were Game Awards Best Performance Nominee brings a smile to my face cause it’s well deserved. Props to James McCaffrey as well.

The downsides for me have been: for one performance, I have a PS4 (not Pro) and there's been times were graphics will stutter, mostly in heavy action combat. The map design could use a scroll feature or something since I can't explore it efficiently at times. The save system is alright but I wish it could autosave more efficiently, I don’t appreciate having to do a combat 3 times because I died to a boss that happened 10 minutes after I did that combat.

Overall this game gives me insane inFamous vibes, which is one of my favorites from the PS3 (Second Son didn't do justice to it). I can't wait to complete the game and both DLC's since I bought the Deluxe Edition. Great job Remedy!

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
