This game had so much potential to be something great, but it is marred by bugs, design choices, and story structure. The first few hours were great, the rest of the game, not so much.

You play Jesse Faden, a woman who is in search of her missing brother. She is led to the FBC which is a secretive government agency which secures, contains and protects against paranormal objects and events. If you have seen the SPC site in the internet, its essentially that. Within 5 minutes of entering the building you are made the director (boss) of the agency and its up to you to find your brother, defeat the paranormal entity infesting the building, and do everything your staff need you to do.

The design of the game is a big letdown. Although the building the game is set in is TARDIS like with unlimited dimensions inside, and with the paranormal objects which fill the game and according to ingame lore can affect their environment, causing new dimensions (thresholds) to appear in the same area. you'd assume this would result in some variety of area design, but no. All areas are just grey concrete filled with desks, and/or pipes. The thresholds you see are limited to putting a few piles of clocks on the floor, or a quarry filled with black rock. Wasted opportunity, as the graphical quality isn't too bad, although more effort is put into flashy dust like effects and debris.

Areas which contain enemies are overly dark, illuminated only by red light as the concrete walls swell and close in. Combine this with enemies who lack discernible differences in appearance except for glowing red spots, and it can be difficult to discern which enemy is which type (necessary for some option missions where you need to kill a certain type), and to determine which is the biggest threat. Combat was generally easy in my experience, only becoming difficult when you get swarmed with shielded regenerating health enemies, or if there was snipers with rocket launcher, for whom you get little warning their homing rockets is coming towards you. You do get the power to convert enemies to your side, but I found the AI lacklustre, as converted suicide bombers just stood pointlessly whilst there is enemies running around them.

Mission structure tends to consist of go to place, find thing but thing isn't there, go somewhere else, find thing and boom, mission done. This becomes incredibly tedious, especially with the obtuse way the story is told to you. Between the story/mission structure and the level design, I was just getting bored.

Actual gameplay is pretty good, with you combining gunplay with powers such as telekinesis and levitation for combat, and with the debris effects it can be really entertaining/ but repetitive, uninspired enemies and level design made this too, become boring and tedious to do the more i played.

I cant really comment on sound design as the soundtrack is subtle in the midst of gameplay, so all I can really say was that it was there, but not good or memorable enough to be remembered.

Playing on a ps4 pro, I experienced numerous frame rate drops, freezing, slow loading textures, and had to reload my save a couple of times as certain mission items would not load in. These issue may be fixed in a future patch, as is the norm these days.

In summary, this game had so much potential to be something amazing, it's a brand new IP with a unique setting and fundamentally good gameplay, but it is let down by a lack of imagination by the developers when it comes to sound, area, mission, story and enemy design. I hope that in the event of a sequel, more effort is given to these aspects and then we may have an amazing series in the future.

I would give this an eight if it weren't for the staggering slowdown that crops up right in the thick of battle. It doesn't happen often, but c'mon, it's 2019. They did not even tell us this is a hardcore game. You can not choose difficulty. No reload checkpoint. No guidelines.
The map which will support you to find the way, do the tasks is almost useless. Even it has a map, it's still hard to no where you should go to next to reach the destination. If you have 15inches or 17inches monitor, you will have to run around to find what you need, and sometime, it won't be on the map, which mean the mark. I ran around for 10 minutes just find the way to the mark. Shooting,, flying, throwing stuffs into the Hiss is fun. The story is fine, just fine. Not worth buying if you are a person who use game to entertain or release your stress.

Sadly, I think I'm going to have to with the general consensus here or even a little below that.

Shortly after I started the game, I was like "Dude this is awesome! I can see why this won GOTY!"

But while Control's strengths like story, setting, lore, characters, acting, and world-building become apparent almost immediately, its flaws take a little more playtime to get to you, but then they REALLY get to you.

After a certain point, I was just IMMENSELY annoyed by the combat. I don't play shooters a lot and consequently, I'm not very good at them, but I was actually doing fine up until a certain point in the game (maybe about two thirds in) where the difficulty curve just TOTALLY takes off. And not just that, the way the game achieves this is purely with brute force, namely sending more and more and more enemies after you and giving them more and more and more health to the point that it becomes bloody ridiculous. Even if you take difficulty completely out of it (I eventually activated Assist Mode), the combat just becomes a tedious grind. The game progresses like this: Corridor, open space with combat, corridor, open space with combat etc. etc. ad nausea. Worse yet, enemies even continue to spawn in "old" areas that you re-visit, which you have to do quite a lot. I normally quite like this style of Metroidvania gameplay, but not if I have to fight five waves of 8 enemies each with insane amounts of health (sometimes they're even regenerating health). The game doesn't allow for any chill exploration, it just keeps ramming the combat down your throat until you're utterly sick of it. There are puzzles in the game as well, but they rarely go beyond "Put block into socket".

The environment, while interesting at first and creating a unique atmosphere, is really all gray concrete throughout the entire game. Until you get to "The Foundation" DLC, that is, where the endlessly repeating gray concrete is swapped out for endlessly repeating caves with red sand. This DLC also contains the worst sequence of the game BY FAR, where you're just going from platform to platform in an empty void, pointlessly fighting off dozens of enemies and putting blocks into sockets, just so you can activate more platforms where you can do the same thing all over again. It almost seems like this level was designed to combine all the worst flaws of the game into one terrible experience and I was just BEGGING for it to be over. Thankfully, I had already turned myself invincible with Assist Mode at this point, because otherwise I would have had to spend even more time here and I honestly don't know if I had been able to tolerate that and keep playing.

The game also absolutely DROWNS you in mods, to the point where I was opening up my inventory to deconstruct them every 10 mins. Finally, I said "You know what? F*** it!" and completely stopped bothering with them altogether. It would've been nice to at least be able to upgrade the number of mods you can carry throughout the game, but apparently, nobody at Remedy thought of that.

There's also A LOT of reading material in this game, to the point where I asked myself if I don't want to just read a book instead lol. It's all optional of course, but the world-building contained in these files is a huge part of the game's appeal, so it's kind of a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.

Boss fights: There really are no boss fights. I mean, technically there are, but they're just normal stronger enemies with more health. There's not even a real boss fight at the very end of the main game, just even more hordes of normal enemies, in case you haven't gotten sick of them yet. Very disappointing, especially considering what could have been done in this regard considering the game's story and the possibilities with the PSI-combat.

I realize that all of this sounds like Control is just a big, boring, grindy mess, but it does have very strong redeeming qualities: I love the generally weird vibe, the acting and writing (except for Jesse's inner monologue, that is often just plain stupid), the lore, untangling the mystery of it all. And while somewhat repetitive, the Oldest House can still be a fascinating location to explore and you're constantly wondering what revelation you'll be stumbling upon next. The Psi-abilities are fun and generally well executed (sometimes they can be a little janky) and the Service Weapon with its different functions and modding abilities allows for a personalized approach to combat. I just wish that there was more of the genuinely awesome and weird stuff in this game (the Ashtray Maze is the absolute highlight) and less of the repetitive shooting of the same few enemy types literally 5,000 times over.

And, oh yeah, there's also still quite a number of bugs 1.5 years after release. Nothing game-breaking, but definitely noticeable.

The game’s story isn’t anything new - shadowy government and inter dimensional beings similar to Stranger Things - but it’s well executed. You’re along for the ride with the main antagonist’s inner dialogue and interacting with the environment. Story is also told using other media like human actors, puppet shows and audio recordings. It’s solid. I completed in maybe dozen hours more or less and reached a new game plus to continue.
The single, semi-open world is also done well. You can interact with most objects around by shooting and destroying them. I get the sense that a good amount of effort in design and “under the hood” type stuff is going on to allow a stable world to interact with. But the design of the world - a secret government building isn’t that fun to traverse. You are rewarded for exploring, if you have the right key cards and abilities, and there are secrets and gun mods to pick up. But the bland office settings can be confusing and dull if you run back and forth too much; but you are rewarded. There are also puzzles with answers that aren’t instantly apparent, but I think it comes down to design choice and the game does not hold your hand or tell you exactly what to do, so I don’t count that as a negative. It asks the player to think.

The biggest problem is that your character can take huge damage quickly. Sometimes you won’t see what’s outside of your field of vision and the controls can be a bit stiff to reacting quickly. So in a few hits you’ll be dead. And then you have to sit through a 20+ second load time. If you’re dying a bunch and having to repeat the process, it’s frustrating enough to consider not playing anymore and that’s the biggest knock. You can also fall to your death easily.

In all, it’s a solid 6 other than the death check pointing and to a smaller extent, less than fluid controls. I wouldn’t be satisfied paying full price. It’s a good backlog game when you have no big games to play.

There seems to be a need in Remedy games to stuff them with enemies to shoot at - this has ruined this game this time. cons:
the pacing of the game is just horrible

the amount of fetch quests that also includes the main story missions is just absurd every time you reach a new thing in the story they cut you out of it and make you go to the other side of the map so you can unlock the next main mission which is really tedious

the amount of performance issues such as bugs frame rate issues is just to much even making me take a break from the game just because i could not handle the frame drops

the main story mission is written poorly and overshadows the cool concept of the creepy hunted house

you fight the same boring looking enemies the whole game even most of the main mission bosses are horrible to look at

if you want to get the cool content and the good looking bosses you gotta do side quests and search for them which is okay if your main mission bosses aren't boring af

the main character is just ugly also there is still a bug in the game where she talks and her lower jaw just snaps to the left it is funny but still really ruins the moment

    the ending is meh

the navigation map is awfully designed i was sometimes stuck 10 to 20 min searching for the place i have to get to just because the map is so hard to read

the whole monologuing thing while talking to someone does sound cool on paper but the execution is poorly and weirdly done by the devs

    pros:

the game play is the best part of this game the telekinesis powers and the gun play is the most enjoyable thing in this game

the whole hunted house concept is really cool and i really loved it although it was over shadowed by the main story there are missions where the concept really shines i think the best example is the head phone mission where the whole area completely changes i can gladly say that that mission is hands down the best part of the game

the side missions are the best part of the game having the coolest areas and bosses if you play this game you gotta do the side missions

in conclusion this whole game sounds so good on paper but the way it is made isn't what i expected there are cool moments in it but most of the time i was either bored annoyed by the fetch quests or just searching where to go because of the annoying map which bring me to my final score a 6 out of 10 i just wish the second game will be better than this one

Remedy should seriously consider adding the ability to change difficulty levels because as is some areas are so incredibly frustrating in terms of plain difficulty on top of being poorly designed in and of themselves that it is prohibitive to progressing for players (like me) who both aren't good at games and don't have the time to spend to "get better" at them. (Also, walked into a boss-fight area, the big font popped up saying I discovered this place, and I couldn't see **** and died immediately. So good planning game).

I struggle to recommend it because while I love the aesthetic and the story (as much as I have gotten in the first several hours), the gameplay is SO Frustrating and the loop is just not fun enough to merit the difficulty level being where it is. I don't know who's decision that was but they made a serious mistake by not allowing players an option to change difficulty (an option present in I think every single Remedy game prior so its not as though there's precedent). Example: In most games, if there's an area I just cannot get past, I turn the difficulty level down to get through it, then pop it back up to where it was prior. Games like this that go from fairly straightforward and fun go to **** Dark Souls in an instant and it's ALL over the place.

Watch a Let's Play instead, unless you have hours and hours to improve at the gameplay, or unless you actually think *you'll* enjoy it. Fully subjective, but to me it's not at all worth the effort of the gameplay just to get to the story, which is what i was excited for.

Then there’s the constant inner voice-overs in whispery, cringe-worthy form, mixed with closeups of eyes that, don’t match the character models. And lastly the painful grind of having to go through rooms again, every time you die, filled with enemies, just to try to get to your destInation again - also filled with enemies. And any one of them taking you down, means starting over again and again. I’m seriously thinking about putting the game down because I’m stuck in one of these hateful loops.

Wait for updates. Wait for a sale. The trailer looked soooo good, but that energy doesn’t translate and the artistry is diluted when there’s nothing but that same look over and over and it’s populated with bad distractions. So disappointed.

I just wish there were more moments like that in the game but with a few clever twists and turns it still managed to hold my attention and fascination. One of the problems I ran into was the confounding map system that was completely terrible and could seemingly have you wandering aimlessly despite following it.

Which brings me back to the implementation of the wacky ideas. It would have been great to explore more of what was contained in the case files rather than the straight forward plot marching. The side quests were fine but nothing too memorable. Even the boss fights were largely forgettable. The one interesting fight was repeated a second time and I felt that could have been a slot reserved for a different enemy but repetition bogged down the game quite often. There was a lot of world building yet surprising not enough exploring and I hope that's changed with some DLC so we can get into more of the mythos behind the FBC. I won't even get into the console frame rate issues. That kept me from giving it a higher score.

Very cool ideas in a very good game that needed more time to develop itself.

The map is virtually useless for navigating the labyrinthine and repetitive locations and there is no compass. You spend a lot of time wandering around dreary office space and it is not fun. I didn't do any side quests because I was afraid of getting lost forever. The environment is not very interactive, aside from using telekinesis to throw office furniture around.

The story is odd in the wrong sort of way. It feels like starting the second season of a show you've never heard of. The weirdness is presented in a very unsatisfying way. for example, why are there employees just standing around when there are demons or whatever infesting the building? The protagonist has all the charm and personality of a Terminator. She is so robotic that at first I thought it was some kind of a joke or a bit, but no. It is not a bit. The cinematics are extremely boring: you meet a weirdly animated character who explains some boring aspect of parapsychology and then they send you off in search of another quest item. Every once in a while there is some cool effects animation.
The gameplay is fun at first, but then the bad guys level up and it doesn't feel like you catch up. So by the time you get to the flying enemies that dodge your telekinetic attach, you spend 2 seconds shooting your underpowered pistol and then hiding for five seconds while it recharges. But they heal faster than your gun reloads, so you find yourself in a truly sisyphean challenge. It is frustrating and not fun, especially when the enemies constantly one-shot you and you have to start over from a distant save point.
The load time is very long and the save point mechanic and the -10% XP penalty for dying feels unnecessarily punishing.

The sound design is cool and some of the weirdness is intriguing, but overall his game sucks and I hate it.

They went back to the Noir style monologues from their previous games, like Max Payne or Alan Wake. It doesn't come off as well as it did in those games but its not terrible. The gameplay is ok but can be a bit too chaotic at times, which can lead to some very cheap deaths towards the end of the game when a lot of enemies and two or three shot you even with full health. Performance wise, there's a lot of problems with this game. Especially for the consoles. If you are going to play this game on a base PS4 or Xbone then I'd suggest waiting till its patched as there's tons of slow down and performance issues that will grind your game to a halt. It's only slightly better on the Pro and the One X too. If you had to play it now, get this for the PC as it seems to be the most stable version. But if you can play it, there's a lot of fun to be had here, even if the game is very short. Although, I should mention how easy this game is to 100% complete for that Platinum trophy/Gamerscore here. I barely put in 15-20 hours and got it easy. So for achievement hunters, this game will be very rewarding. At the end of the day, its a fun game, that's short and has performance issues. If you can find this for around 30 bucks, do it. But I wouldn't recommend it for much more then that right now. Once the performance issues are taken care of, this is a very solid 8/10 game, just like a lot of Remedy's previous games have been. Healing is a pain, because you have to run around like a headless chicken while rockets are coming from EVERYWHERE- and them BAM, you're dead. You get sent all the way back to the checkpoint and it gets very tedious. Honestly the game is too challenging for this type of genre and I had a harder time with it then Dark Souls. Very annoying not knowing where multiple rockets are constantly bombarding you from. And while the effects, lighting and art are excellent, especially the physics, the game picture wise looks like poop on a Pro on a 4K tv. You can really tell the developer only put time into the PC version and neglected the consoles. Frame rate stays consistent for the most part, but 1080p/30 is unacceptable for a "premium" console. Badly optimized. Obviously this is all subjective, but I would wait until its around $20, maybe get it now if you have a beast PC if its like $40 on PC. Expand

Every single texture in the entire game is sharp and crisp. No matter where you look you will find not a single low resolution texture in the entire game. And the ligthing is by far the best i have seen in any game so far. Im not even exaggerating here, i have my fair share of critic with this game but the graphic is without flaws.

    WORLDBUILDING:

This game is very good at pulling you out of your comfort zone and throwing you right into the twilight zone where anything can happen at anytime. It creates from the start a very dense atmosphere which carries over the whole game. If you play this game for the story then you will love it.

    ###CONS:

GAME IS WAY TO EASY AND HAS ONLY ONE DIFFICULTY SETTING:

None of the enemies you encounter needs a special tactic or strategy to beat. They are all just total cannon fodder you can brute force your way through.Other PVE games like remnant from the ashes, dark souls, sekiro or nier:automata have proven that it is definitely doable to create distinct and interesting looking enemies, which are challenging to fight.

Controls enemy design is the biggest let down of this game in my opinion. If i would rate this game alone on the combat and not factor in the graphic, story and overall atmosphere, i would give this game a 6 out of 10.

You are almost never in any danger of dying. You have infinite ammo for your gun. And the enemies drop way to much health packs. All of that makes combat very boring after the novelty of flying around in the sky and throwing heavy objects with telekinesis wears of.Beside the enemies being boring to fight, there is also not much enemy variety in this game. Even different enemy types look way to similar. Most of them are either possessed humans or some strange anomalies glitching around
on the screen. And none of them has interesting abilities which go beyond heat seeking missiles, shields or damaging aoe fields. There is really not much depth in combat to be found in this game.

LEVELDESIGN LOOKS BREATHTAKING BUT GAMEPLAYWISE THERE IS NOT MUCH HAPPENING BESIDE OF FETCHQUESTS:

Don't get me wrong the areas look gorgeous and the game is very effective in creating a lot of atmosphere by pulling you out of your comfort zone and throwing you right into the twilight zone where anything can happen at anytime. But the game does gameplaywise not much with this setting. You mostly do fetch quests. Go to point A to find something and then bring it to point B. Which on its own wouldn't even be a problem if combat would be more interesting and challenging. There are some puzzles to solve, but they consist mostly out of finding battery boxes and putting them into power generators to open gates. The puzzle design is just as unimaginative as the combat, except of maybe less than a handful more interesting puzzles.

Beside of the enemies, there are also not really much stage hazards like you find them in other adventure games.Almost no deadly traps waiting to be activated by you, no machines which disable your flying ability in an area around them, no walls which shift gravity, no underwater areas, no stealth gameplay. There is so much they could have done gameplaywise in this setting they created, but they strangely restricted the player mostly to fight swarms of cannon fodder enemies and put battery boxes into generators.

UNIMAGINATIVE SKILLTREE AND ONLY A HANDFUL OF INTERESTING ABILITIES:

The game has a few interesting abilities which make you feel very powerfull and feel very good to perform, like flying around, dashing and throwing heavy objects with telekinesis at enemies. All of these are very well implemented, are very fun to use and give the game most of its identity. Even if the dash feels a little bit slow and creates also not much space. But flying and throwing objects feels perfect.

But beside those 3 abilities and the 5 different fire modes for your gun which feel also very rewarding to use, there is not much else in terms of interesting abilities to get. The skilltree has mostly passive stat boosts like more health,or damage boost, but nothing which would change the way you interact with your environment. No lifesteal, no teleport dash, no additional movement abilities, no melee ability upgrades, no stage hazard resistancy (because there are almost no stage hazards).

Most of that comes probably from you being able to fly anyways, so falling into a lake of acid or lava or whatever is not a thing to begin with. But as said they could have created something like enemies or wall and floor tilling, which inhibits you from flying in a certain area.

THE GAME IS VERY SHORT WITH A AVERAGE PLAYTIME OF RUFFLY 12 HOURS

MINIMAP IS ONLY 2D INSTEAD OF 3D WHICH MAKES IT HARD TO NAVIGATE IN THIS COMPLEX BUILDING

Control is a "Beyond, two souls" meets "Warehouse 13" third person mystery shooter but without the interesting outside shots from warehouse 13 and without that vast story in "beyond two souls" with everything in the game "Control" located inside one giant multidimensional concrete building ...

with A gun (to that later)

the Story is quite interesting but the developers somehow show no interest in telling the origins to actually set this story up correctly.

The Game basically starting with you being the main actor -out of unknown reasons-.. going to this unknown building -out of unknown reasons- guided by an unknown force and encountering an unknown federal agency with unknown origins guided by an unknown "board" to help you with unknown abilities to hunt down an unknown enemy..

and then later during the game you will then get clues about those "unknowns"
That is, you are willing to collect and read them .. there are also some video clips to watch, but those are actually glorified audio clips with a video loop playing in the background.

One of the issues is, that the prologue is completely missing to set up the main character and her motives.. you start without a clue who "Jesse" is or why she is here or how.

You will get insight later in the game but you will have to collect codex entries and have to read them and then see if that entry covers the main Characters story or if that is an information about something different.

i found myself going from stopping the game every time i picked up an object to read the codex to simply mindlessly collecting the flashing item on my screen and then scrolling through the codex without reading them.

new codex entries have a marker but that marker disappears once you scrolled over them and on ps4 its hard to see those entries since the marker dissappears once you scroll over them. a filter function or simply a sorting new to od would have solved that issue. After you killed any new enemy that showed up, you will also get a new database entry to look up the new enemy type you just killed.

The gameplay is sometimes wonky and feels sluggish but nevertheless quite entertaining. Force pushing objects into enemies was fun in Star Wars and is fun here. Frame rate drops are often and in dense encounters you can drop down to single digit frame per seconds
The game lacks some "pivotal" moments (It has them, but just at the wrong time, e.g. when you play the sidequests and encounter the bosses there. which is also the only time you encounter real bosses )and it feels that you just run into new encounters on your way to somewhere else.

The map design is horrible and most of the time you have to guess and simply brute force your way to the new area by runnign around since you cant even zoom in or see on which level you are. The sigs on the wall are often way more helpfull tha the map.

For encounters there is quite some background explanation missing on why and how you get all of your abilities and equipment and how it works.. and most important why.. .. And to be honest, most of the abilities do not fit the playstyle of the game , but you are fine without using them. i havent used a anything for combat than evade and force push.

Lets talk about "the gun".. you basically have a handcannon, a shotgun, an smg and a sniper.. all in one "grip" with several different barrels .. but you just need the base gun and level that up. You will find out later int he game that this gun is supposed to be like Mjølnir or Excalibur, but that feelig did not transport itself well. its a nice gimmicky gun. You can kill most of the enemies with the standard gun and finsih them off with a forklift in the face.

Some positives: I did nopt know about the SCP but i loved the TV series "Warehouse 13", it really was one of my favorite popcorn shows and i found a lot of parallels in "control" with those "Objects of Power"; thats definitely one of the reasons why i will keep on playing..

what else is left to say?

the main actor is not as pretty in the game as in the box art but that's not important, the dialogues are quirky and those "inner monologues" take WAY to long and too much room in the game without realy contributing

lore/story sometimes just pops up in your inventory/database without informing you.

I will definitely finish the game for the Story although it looks like they somehow tried to bolt on some "endgame" with some challenges and unlockables.
I think the story of that game could have been fine without any configurable weapon and character skill trees, its not an RPG ..

i do not understand the games media and their willingness to give the game a 100 out of 100 other than to assume this is paid advertisement.. Yes you are allowed to fangirling over this game but this isnt God of War.

    Fazit: "OK" game.

After an hour I just put the game down because there is an annoying boss battle (in the mail room), and the save point is far away. I just don't care enough to keep on trundling back for this :(

It is always a challenge to make a game that hasn't in some way been done before. And while there are mechanics that are familiar, plot elements that have been used, the setting altogether is very special. Jesse herself makes for an okay hero, although it really could've used better character development altogether in the game. Some quirky characters are there with enough mystery and humor (looking at you, Ahti the Janitor) to keep the interest afloat, so no worries there.

The real worries are in the annoying systems at place with saving and loading a game after a death. And oh, death... Sometimes you just... fall. And die. Other times it's understandable of course, you just should've looked at the environment more closely. But the game doesn't tell you everything, and all the skills don't work 100% of the time to the players advantage. Most of the time all the throwing and manipulating stuff in different ways is fluid, but other times it can get quite tedious. Combining to that some combat sequences you have to repeat because you died. And had to backtrack from a control point, which also works as a fast travel system. It's just a lot of time wasted. Combat and the environmental destruction though looks incredibly good, which is a real plus.

The variance is also there with the weapons and the enemies, although towards the end it does become a bit dull and repetitive, but not so much as to break the game or make you give up. The game is quality stuff and gives a much better direction for Remedy to go to. Can't say if we got a franchise in our hands, but i do hope this makes enough profit to spark interest in one. There is much to explore in this world plot-wise.

After all is said and done, Control holds up quite well and doesn't really do anything stupid to seem completely ridiculous as a game. It takes itself seriously, but at the same time has these humorous oddities in place that give it color and keep up the interest. A few cool side quests help the cause of course. But then again, a few tedious ones bring it down. Much of the lore is placed around as documents and videos, of which some are interesting to watch, but again, towards the end it becomes harder and harder to keep up with all the material.

I'd say the game is close to being an 8, but technical problems and oddities in combat and checkpoint systems bring it down. Also the plot is a complicated one, and almost falls in its own twists and turns in the multi-dimensional setting. All in all it is an exciting adventure and if you are into strange plots, Inception meeting Matrix and System Shock with Remedy's own twists, you should try it!

Why 6? a truly terrible level design leading to you getting lost/uncertain about objectives every 10-15 minutes due to repetitive areas, and a convoluted, obtuse story that tries to appear overly intricate and deep, but simply appears as frustrating to get into as the game makes absolutely no effort to entice you in its lore.

furthermore, despite occasional moments of suspense and horror, the overall effectiveness of these moments when they arise is muted due to the way the game is set out: you walk into a new area, you can already see a red mist indicating combat is about to happen, and around you, you will already see highlighted items that you can interact with (think items to use force pull/push) - all this before you activate a brief cutscene to trigger a boss fight or battle with various enemies.
    IMO not worth it.

Control is another one of those games where at first it seems like something new and original, however after just a brief hour or three you can see through its shiny chassis to the flawed and repetitive mechanics underneath.

    The good:

Smashing things up, using telepathy and running-and-gunning are mega fun. Despite this being incredibly repetitive and there not being much diversity in the enemies it can be fun to alternate between throwing slabs of concrete at soldiers or running up close with a shotgun-like blast. The atmosphere is great at first but the darkness and clinical environments soon make it tiresome.

    The bad:

The map - it's almost useless. On my PS4 Pro it is minute and doesn't give specific directions. I can be told to 'meet Emily' without them saying where Emily is, only for me to find she's in the room right next door after I've wandered around half the available map.

The difficulty - quite a few people have remarked on this, and for me where it went wrong is that the difficulty lies with the health bar. You can have 20 guys in a row shooting at you and not take a hit, only to walk blindly into an enemy who kills you in one shot, leading to a loss of credit, a long load time and probably a long journey back to where you are - this I found maddening.

The layout - your environment is cold, dark, confusing and meandering. The map could have resolved much of this but they really screwed that up. Things are far too hard to find and much of the traversal relies on guesswork.

The story - some love it, some don't. I don't. The characters talk actual gibberish far too much, the story lacks coherency and it even lacks a compelling element. The Janitor character at the start was annoying as hell - just tell me what's up and let's move on!

Overall, games like Deus Ex managed almost everything this game does only so much better. This is not worthy of £20+. I wasted a few hours of my life on this. Don't make the same mistake.

Control is a game that had the potential to be one of the games of the generations but as a result of too many faults, I don't think it can be considered anything more than good.

Starting with the positives, I found the gameplay to be generally really good. The use of both guns and powers have been well integrated to give a fluid control system. Switching between shooting your enemies and using your powers to defeat them is seamless giving you a variety of manners beat the enemies. And there are a wide variety of mods and upgrades to help customise your approach to the game.

Level design is also really good for the most part with most areas giving you the opportunity to both run-and-gun and take cover depending on what your situation requires. There are a few places where you are fighting in tight spaces which does go against how the game tells you to keep moving but I did find these few and far between. There is also a lot to do with numerous side missions that will unlock powerful mods or even new powers and helps expand the games already impressive lore.

Sadly, as already mentioned there are quite a few negatives, especially on the technical side of things. Graphically, this isn't impressive for a game from 2019. Everything looks a bit washed out and bland whilst the character models just don't look right with a large number of characters, sadly including the playable character (Jesse), having weird looking heads. This is a relatively minor issue but other technical issues aren't. Loading times are really poor taking an age to get you back into the action. And worst still is the frame rate. Whilst it is usually stable, when you hit a situation where there are several enemies on screen it can plummet. And bizarrely, when exiting the pause menu the game stutters and freezes. It does feel like optimisation has been a bit of an afterthought with Control.

Whilst I did generally enjoy the gameplay for Control, it isn't without its issues. Often it can be hard to see where the enemies are leading to cheap and frustrating deaths when an unseen telekinetic enemy wallops you with a projectile. There are icons to show you the direction of the enemy that is attacking you, these are so small that they are far too easy to miss in the thick of battle.

The checkpoint system is also a mess. You might think that seeing the auto-save icon in the bottom corner of the screen means you've hit a checkpoint but the reality is you haven't. With the exception of the odd instance, each death will see you return to the last save point you accessed which can lead to loads of tedious back tracking throughout areas of the game you have already cleared, often to be ambushed with a load of enemies that just randomly spawn in front of you. And this system has apparently better than it was at launch!

More often than not, Control is a fun game. But there are too many irritating issues present in the game to make this the must have title that it could have been. If you can pick it up cheaply or got this when it was free on PS+ than give it a go. If not, I would just play something else.

I have experience playing third person shooters such as Uncharted, PvsZ Garden Warfare, GTA and Red Dead but, I have not played a Remedy Entertainment video game before Control.

This game is a mixed bag. I am not familiar with Alan Wake or any lore related material, making the story of this game rather convoluted and disconnected. However, these confusing chapters are what kept me engaged in the story. Because Control is a Metroidvania, you won't be able to walk straight through the world. Your major objectives will take you on a pre-determined path, but you can often deviate to discover new regions or revisit ones you've already visited. As you might anticipate, you'll obtain new talents that will allow you to overcome dead ends, allowing you to either continue the plot or explore other locations. These skills are crucial to the game's gameplay, deeming Control as not just a simple third-person shooter.

The battles in Control are the meat of the game, and they frequently begin with adversaries falling down or warping in as you enter a room, even if you've already cleared the area. You begin with standard security guard foes, but towards the conclusion of the game, you'll be mixing and matching enemies with comparable abilities to Jesse, as well as cannon fodder enemies. Because there is no cover mechanic, things can get fairly frenetic, so keeping on the move and making smart use of your talents is crucial.

Control was fun to play. You develop talents at a reasonable rate and can upgrade them with ability points earned from missions and sub-quests to make them even more valuable. Some of the side tasks are a little tedious, consisting of nothing more than killing more monsters or searching an area for things, while others have a puzzle element to them that I appreciate. The large number of items provides a wealth of lore and information about the puzzles.

You'll be done sooner if you stick to the main storey, but if you explore and do all the side stuff like I did, it'll take you roughly 15-20 hours, with the most of that done in two play sessions. The storey had its moments, but it didn't really take off until later in the game; instead, it was the gameplay, particularly the battles and exploration, that had me playing for long amounts of time and kept me entertained. Things might get challenging at the finish as monsters start striking hard, which surprised me a little. You resurrect at control points rather than natural checkpoints, which means you have to fight the same foes all over again, but you keep everything you collect. Control is a fun game with fast-paced action and a lot to discover. I liked it but didn't love it, but if you like the developer or the genre(s), you should absolutely give it a try.

The bosses are reskinned, and the areas are used over and over again. The puzzles where very good, and the best part of the game. The clothes are boring, but the combat was interesting. I liked the jeans and leather jacket the character started with, and used it throughout the whole game. The mods were confusing, but quickly learned. Points are taken away when you die, and never regained. I would recommend this game to a good puzzle solver, someone who doesn't mind dying a lot, and someone who loves a challenge. Expand

this would be a great game if it had a decent save mechanism and nav system but when you die you're likely to go back very far and have to travel (long download) then walk then travel again (long download) then walk, then kill the same enemies til you get to the boss again. the map is essentially useless so you have to navigate via signs on walls so there's too much walking around.

For all the talk about how this game was a game of the year candidate, I was definitely underwhelmed by the overall final product. A solid story, great combat, but everything else felt half baked and cookie cutter. (progression & fast travel)

Where the game is unsatisfying for me is the overall immersion, setting, and NPCs. Everything here feels like it tries to be clever or immersive, but just feels like it misses the mark in so many ways. I think a lot of the time the game was trying too hard to be edgy, strange and mysterious to a point where it wasn't organic. Was not a big fan of the Oldest House.. It was one setting that doesn't change that much from each location.

Overall Control is a solid game. Solid story, great gameplay, but overall feels like it misses the mark for me. My favorite part of the game was the AWE DLC and the Dr. Darling videos.
Whether or not you like this game I think will really come down to what you find as a priority as a gamer.

Quite "Ordinary" game. Good action, but bad story and main protagonist. Once you maximize throw and energy, you become overpowered and there is no need to use weapons or any other power.

This is a mediocre game and I don't understand why it was being hyped. Like how do you have a 3rd person shooter with no cover system? The powers are pretty mediocre and sometimes it doesn't even snap to what you want it to snap to. At least Quantum Break had auto-cover and better powers. And the graphics on the PS4 (what I'm playing on) aren't that good. I'm just playing this until GhostThis is a mediocre game and I don't understand why it was being hyped. Positives:

    - Unique Powers, the throwing of objects and floating and gliding through the air was a blast - Weapon Upgrades, Skill upgrades etc - Good graphics, moody atmosphere, some of the stuff in it is very "Inception Movie" like - You can't change difficulties however you can play around with game balancing in settings to adjust to your preference if your finding it to hard

    Negatives:

    - Hard to follow the story, just didn't really care about it I just wanted to shoot stuff
-This game probably isn't for everyone. Map issues (discuss later) and the only checkpoints are the "control points" which may put the less "advanced gamers" off a bit
    - Towards the end of the game and especially some of these boss-related side missions enemies were freaking bullet sponges man and on top of that your health goes down SO quick. Also the Launch ability, that was OP, it could do serious damage and if you levelled that up with energy at the same time it was insane
    - THE MAP. I've heard reports that this was intentional because they wanted the game to be more "immersive" ?? For me the map was a nightmare and I can't imagine how difficult it would be for some players with eye sight issues to figure out where the triangle blip on the map is. For me it wasn't so much a problem during the story it was once I started to do side missions where I had no idea where to go or where to find/destroy a certain "thing"

Overall I gave this a 7. It is a bit of a rough rating but it's my personal opinion, it's just not the game for me. It's one of those games than can be hit or miss depending on your preference. This was maybe hit but I just never felt 100% invested in the game.

The environment is pretty interesting, but that's about it. Characters are, apart from their distinctive look, very bland and give boring dialogue. Similar to Jesse who's a pretty uninteresting protagonist, with no character traits apart from that she wants to find this person and that person even turns out to be more boring and underdeveloped. There was no character who interested me or made a remark that made me feel engaged.
I also find the story very problematic as you have zero idea what's going on whereas Jesse has no problem just going along with this supernatural environment that doesn't seem to be grounded in reality whatsoever. I felt there was no goal apart from finding this person, but I didn't know this person so why should I care?
Now a bad story doesn't have to ruin a game if the gameplay is fun, but I found the combat very unbalanced and I felt the team who developed it didn't have enough experience to craft balanced combat. I immediately stuck all my points in my ability to through objects and this just became extremely overpowered. This was because if you throw an object you just hold L1 and Jesse will lock on to a target and then you release L1 to throw. This requires zero aim or skill and made combat so lame. sure you can shoot too, but this was less effective and after a few throws everyone was dead within 30 seconds, You also need to really get cover, because otherwise they'll kill you in no time, while I did have an upgraded health bar. so combat is pretty lame and is only there in short bursts. Framerate can also really tank here and I'm saying this after patch 1.03.
After 10 hours I stopped playing the game.

The destructive fun of the supernatural powers in Control were ruined for me by the awful frame rates, the unhelpful map, the distorted plot points, and the countless number of sheer cliffs that landed me in the endless abyss. It ended up being a very average experience for me. Nothing made me care about these characters.

At least i got the game on sale for $30, just sad that i don’t think I will finish it :( after you die (which happens alot) you have to go through the same area & kill the same enemies over & over! It reminds me of Groundhog’s day!!!! :)~ Expand

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
