After playing through the game and obtaining the platinum trophy last night, I can say that Control s a good game, yet a flawed game that could have been better.
    Pros:
Solid story with solid characters, mysterious plot that keeps you playing, incredible lore, fun core gameplay and great sound design. Great soundtrack.
    Cons:
Terrible checkpoint system that has you spawn at the latest control point you accessed whenever you die, which means you have to spend time waiting for the loading screen AND traversing back to the place you were at. This can be really frustrating.
The game punishing you for dying by taking away 10% of your source. This only adds insult to the injury that is the checkpoint system.
A combination of a bad health system and random difficulty spikes. Several enemies in the game as well as bosses in side mission have cheap attacks that do a ton of damage. You will find yourself getting killed with just 2 or 3 hits a lot. I have health 6 unlocked along with 2 personal mods that increase my health and even still enemies can melt your health if you **** up just once. The blue orbs from killed enemies hardly give you back any health and I think that being able to carry consumables to restore your health would have been great.
Shielded enemies can be frustrating to fight at times because their shield regenerate quickly.
The game's mini-map can be awkward and difficult to use at times and you find yourself getting lost frequently. Jukebox expeditions are pointless since you can get prime & absolute mods by just playing the game.
Occasional frame rate drops that last 2-4 seconds on both the base PS4 and the PS4 Pro (especially the base PS4) during intense fights. The game also stutters briefly every time after it autosaves.

It's a good thing I waited for a price drop after I saw DigitalFoundry's video on the poor performance on consoles. Had I bought it at launch and payed $60 for it, I would have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10 because there's no way that I would consider massive performance issues on launch acceptable. The game in it's current state is relatively stable. All in all, and 7/10 game.

The plot is interesting, because it is not explained at the beginning, and this is the only thing that saves it from being a straight-forward typical plot, which it eventually becomes. Inside an interesting setting, but the plot is something that we've seen 100 times already. Story in Quantum Break was better and much more ambitious.
There is no much change in the scenery, and for a game of this length I would expect something more than just inside of the building and astral plane, and that's it.
I guess I'm glad I bought a disc version, cause I will be able to sell it on.

A mediocre game at the best.
Story is try hard to be original but instead is all around "Bad aliens attack u must kill them"
    That is all.
Now u know everything. It has nice visuals there and u can fly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. **SPOILERS about game mechanics but not story** This is a fun game. They flushed the combat mechanics out. Evade with quick dodges, shoot, telekinetically throw **** (like chunks of the environment) at or (with grenades launched at you) back at bad guys, then repeat. There are only two useful guns of the few available. Control's version of a high-power rifle called Pierce and a shot-gun, Shatter. Both can injure shielded enemies while other weapons are only effective against weaker enemies. Hence Pierce and Shatter's usefulness. All of which your one universal grey gun morphs into. The powers all feel useful and enabled the game developers to make some great choices in a level layout that they couldn't have otherwise. Specifically, you can float, so areas on the other side of gaps or on top of a tall structure are now accessible. You gain weapons and powers as the game progresses at a rate that is enjoyable and rewarding and fits with the timing of the story. The color palette, theme, and overall look is grey: grey concrete, grey metal, and brown wood, with dark-colored carpets and looks as you might imagine a well funded U.S. government facility (in Hollywood). The story is interesting and delivered through some dialogue with NPC's, but mostly **** you have to read. Tons and tons of **** to read in fact. There are some videos that add to the story and interestingly they are live-action. My chief complaint is the save/respawn system. No matter what you do, how far you complete an area you will always load and respawn to a point (you unlock) that is at the BEGINNING of the area you are in. It is intensely annoying to retrace your steps ad Infinitum. Control's different areas look very similar, so it's easy to get lost (even with the map). I gave up playing more than once because I couldn't bother to tread the same steps again, fight the same guys again, just to get to where I was before I died or had to stop playing. This seems like an easily fixed issue. Regardless, the game is still worth a play. Even if it is a wee bit short. I'd post this review on the Epic store, but it's a POS and doesn't have user reviews. Gameplay is cool at the start, but after few hours its all the same. It doesn’t matter that you have few weapons and powers. You always just enter a new room and throw rocks towards red glowing humanoids around you, shooting with whatever gun you have while waiting for the power to recharge. There’s literally just one interesting opponent in the game (the invisible screaming thingie that appears just a second before attacking you).

I’ve finished the game, but second half was just grind to get to the end.

Generally a big disappointment. I really liked Max Payne games from the same studio, but this one is so much worse.

I want to give this game a much higher rating. It has nice gameplay and a very compelling story. It's seriously let down by textures loading in at severely low resolution making things like like an N64 eta game at times. This is inexcusable considering how long the game has been out now. It should have been patched very soon after launch.

I'd recommend just exploring the world and playing with the mechanics and completing side missions. The main story is a complete let down and actually ruins the rest of what they built. The last few missions are just hoards of enemies we've already fought dozens of times. You do 3 missions in a row where go to Tina place to find. Athing and it's just not there. The laziest design possible and they reuse it in three consecutive final missions only to be capped off by an office assistant simulator and a final level that takes place inside the tutorial space.... Too many qualities. Too many flaws.
    Amazing history and character development.
Huge unbalance between regular encounters and boss battles. The scenario is crucial too many times to decide between succes and failure. It's like the gameplay was not polished enough to be at the same level as the storytelling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for the two DLC packs to release before I reviewed this game to see if I would change my score of 7 to something else. Unfortunately, as you can see by the score, I didn't think too much of the DLC. But let me say that it was still good DLC, but you wouldn't be missing out on much if you didn't play it. Now the main game. The story was very confusing and I had no idea what the hell was going on. It tries to be creative in ways that, in my opinion, don't work out too well. The game had a huge frame dropped after you unpause so I just opened the other menu instead of pausing throughout the game. The main character was a very bland protagonist and could've been replaced by anyone else and nothing would change. The map was confusing to navigate at times, often leading me to get lost. The weapon forms were creative and while I would've liked to see a few more forms, I was fine with the ones I had. The supporting characters were some of my favorite parts throughout the story, mostly because they had more personality than Jesse. The cutscenes look very pretty but the way some characters talk looked off to me. There's honestly a lot of good things in this game, although I would only recommend playing it if you really want to. I like the idea (but its not neccesarly original, its basically SPC foundation: the game) but I've got a lot of problems with the execution. Game is clunky, not always pleasant to look at, full of boring combat and just too sensational/emotional for my taste (It could use some more lowkey mystery feel/ logic behind it).

A third-person shooter without a cover system does not have sense. IA is good but the fight balance is very bad. Some boss fight were almost impossible but they did not give you a sense of accomplisment when you win the fight. Spawn of enemies is too much larger and the power of the main protagonist cannot help you so much during the fights. You will always use the standard gun, since all the others aren't effective.
Talking about graphics, the game is stunning but on my PC (Intel i7 9700K, 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz ram, SSD M.2 and Geforce RTX 2060 Super, the loading of texture is very poor. To use ray tracing I have to lower graphical details. So much frustating.

What started out as a really strong thiller/horror that had me hooked into the story, slowly eroded over time into a Weird Sci-Fi that I wasn't unsatisfied with but wasn't expecting. The story was great up until its abrupt end. The level design was really well crafted, I was constantly awestruck at how well the team took urban offices and pushed their architecture into something that shaped the mood perfectly. The soundtrack was masterfully done and had all the flavor that comes with Weird Sci-Fi cinema like Arrival. The combat design felt simple and engaging without feeling stale, and I am a personal fan of one-difficulty method as it makes me feel confident that the game is perfectly designed with intent.

Where this all went wrong for me was the introduction of the levitation mechanic as it became painfully obvious that the grounded Thriller/Horror genre was gone and what I was playing was just another sci-fi shooter. What finally tipped me over the edge of no longer wanting to play was the inevitable platforming gameplay that arose in the Foundation DLC.

Everything that the game had built was replaced with a bland environment filled with a platforming playstyle that the game can't support due to the tedious speed and nature of levitation. After a few hours of clearing through black Astral blocks in a void-world of slow Mary Poppins drifting I realized I haven't even finished 1 of the 4 objectives and I wasn't having fun at all. So I returned to the Old House and finished out my time in the Investigations DLC and then hung up my I.D. card. Overall I feel my playthroufh ends in mediocrity. I would celebrate the studio for the attempt as it was good but not great all the way through. I'm looking forward to more of their work.

    - The quality and the graphic is good but sometimes for some reason it become a ps2 quality. The game allow you to break and destroy many things around you but not the stupid lightness that **** ur eyes i really hate that.
    - The map. The most annoying thing in the game maybe im a retard and if i am, surely theres many like me that spend more time searching for the place of the quest than accually playing it The map dosnt show you anything not even the level you are in and in this type of desgin you really need it. - the difficulty is also a big problem there is no chosing every gets the same difficulty And sometimes the game become very hard in a very stupid way. And when that happend you will die alot and the checkpoint system doesnt help it one bit. If you played it you will understand me If you didnt trust me you will get very pissed from me like i did. - the story didnt intrest me i had a felling its **** but idk maybe its ok.
    - the game reminds me of infamous very much maybe the game didnt make it to be like infamous but the gameplay in it sure does.
Its really good and the best thing in the game The abilities you get through the story and the quests keep you intrested in it become nothing else does. So there is no boring in combat. its very enjoyable.
So Control is a good game truly ngl but the negatives in it makes u think of deleting the game at least one time in 1hr.
Thats why i am giving its a 6 and i hated it.

Also I like some characters (there are few of them, but some, like doctor Darling are wonderful. I recommend watch every video record with him.)
But unfortunately game in some way seems undercooked for me:
    - Health recovery system. I really feel disappointed by the fact that if I want to cure and there are a lot of aggressive enemies around then I need to risk to cure. I think it would be better to have slow recovering in battle mode and recovering in calm mode, because it's really frustrating when you left with almost no health after finishing of battle but there are no health pieces left.
    - Checkpoint system. If you copy Dark Souls bonfires then you must provide better shortcuts. Because few times when I died I needed to make very long way to the area at which I died. This is frustrating and even can motivate you to enable cheats.
    - And yeah, facility to enable cheats in settings instead of changing difficulty levels. I hope I should not explain why this was a bad idea.
    - Also it's hard to orient when there are a lot of special effects on screen. And my PS4 Slim react on this with FPS lowing which is not very good when you are supposed to play aggressively.
    - On higher levels weapon become less effective against enemies than superpowers.
    - NPCs has potential but I would expect from them being more deeper.

I recommend to play it but don't raise your expectation too high. It's good game but its flaws can leave you with some kind of bitterness.

The shooting and combat are one of the best in the industry, its Remedy after all. They make games that has some of the best shooting and combat mechanics. With the added Telekinetic powers, it adds so much depth and mayhem towards the combat gameplay. I have no qualms with the combat, although some enemy types are literally designed to take the piss out of you.

As i also mentioned, it is also an absolute miss. Let me start with the one of the most atrocious map and mission designs I have ever seen. Do not blame yourself once you get yourself lost for an hour or two just trying to figure out where you are heading towards. Besides that, not giving you a mission brief, there will be no markers, and the objectives are so vague. I have spent hours just running around figuring out what the hell am I supposed to go and what exactly to do. The puzzles are designed poorly as well. Trust me, a regular visit to Youtube walkthroughs will be frequent. And it is going to be absolutely frustrating. The checkpoint system is bad. When you die and fail a segment of the mission, it places you several corridors back. It will take unneeded time hiking back to the same place you died. A terrible design and I have no idea why Remedy did not spot this.

The story, I apologize. But it is sub-par. The writing and the character development are weak. Narrative is very drab. You can't connect at all with Jesse, the main character. As you slog through the missions with her vague narrative of the story. She isn't a very compelling character. Remedy seemed unable to land great storylines of old, such as Max Payne and Alan Wake. Quantum Break's story and main characters also suffer from the same syndrome and I really hope they improve their storytelling in future games.

Graphics? Awesome. Although the level designs are nothing to shout about. But the game, at times is absolutely beautiful to look at. The lighting are great. Visual effects on the telekinetic powers has weight and looks fantastic. Physics of objects getting destroyed are very impressive as well. I played the game on maxed out settings on a 1660ti and the performance is decent although not great. Overall, Control is at times, very visually astounding.

Overall, its a 6.8 out of 10. Control has some really impressive graphics and physics, almost next gen at times. Coupled with Remedy's trademark combat mechanics. This is a great recipe for an amazing shooter. I just cannot give the game anything higher due to the certain design aspects such as map navigation, puzzles and mission structure in addition to a sub-par storyline bottlenecking the whole experience down.

Should you get it? Yes. At a very discounted price. If you can look past its bad design choices in exchange to get yourself a chunk of that Remedy-styled combat mechanics. Why not? But prepare to have a good amount of patience with the game tolerating its glaring flaws.

I felt like the story had too many blank points - dialogues that were supposed to create mystery, but eventually felt redundant or not very important. One thing has to be said for the almost perfect game length - the main story line doesn't go longer than it needs to. It's defnitely for the best as the shooting parts after a few hours start to become a little tedious, though the gameplay itself is definitely an improvement compared to Remedy's last entry. Worth playing if you're a fan of sci-fi themes or looking for something not too long to play for an afternoon or two. Or at least just to have a chance to have fun in the 'ashtray maze'. Expand

This is most notable in the boss fights, but even at other parts of the game, the difficult simply doesn't always make sense, sometimes being too easy and at other times being too difficult and never being super consistent. The game has an interesting story although there is certainly a lot of filler. All in all, it's certainly far from a bad game, but also not a great game. If they could tighten up the shooting and combat and make the powers more fun to use, we could be on to something here. Expand

Regardless, it was a pretty immersive story for the most part, despite having several peaks and valleys. I have to compliment the acting in this game, especially by some of the later characters. The gameplay feels like a very well executed third person shooter that belonged on the Xbox 360. I don’t mean that in any good or bad way, but after reading the developer’s history, I can totally see how the developers also made Alan Wake and Max Payne. So the gameplay feels like something we don’t see much of anymore, and this genre really ran its course a couple generations ago, it’s still fun. The only real complaint I have is that this game would have benefitted from a more linear mission-based design instead of the open world design. Since the entire game takes place indoors, I found myself getting lost pretty regularly. The graphics are also very impressive for a PS4 game, and look fantastic on the PS5. Overall it’s a dated formula that is executed with a unique story that isn’t like many other games. The best way to describe the experience: I enjoyed it, but I will forget about it quickly. Expand

The story concept is interesting, not gonna lie, but its.. empty, theres no memorable/interesting characters, the story pace is terrible and looks like devs spent 50% of time development writing texts cause oh boy, youre going to become an expert reader in Control due to the stupid amount of docs and reports to read, looks like they didnt wanted to show to us some things, got lazy, and just wrote it down in a piece of paper. I like games that presents docs containing more story info to the players, but this game is like WAY too much.

Game is way too easy, enemies variety is a joke, as well as the environment; you look right u see offices, you look left you see more offices, you look down, guess what, offices! The maps absolutely sucks, u get stuck 80% of the time, and its not me, i love for example the SoulsBorne series, it doesnt even have a map, but once u put some hours into these games u memorize the map, because ITS DIFFERENT, theres DIFFERENT areas, theres VARIATY... things that Control sucks way too much.

I rated as 5/10, because theres great graphics to pleasure you, and the combat is kinda great (it also becomes boring with time because weapons start to become useless and u only levitate things as defence), also theres the destruction factor which i truly loved, the scenario is great for destroy objects, glass, walls and etc..

This review will be spoiler free as I only want to talk about my experience with the game and how the game holds up in a general sense.

So firstly I want to talk about the positives.
Control's gameplay was very good as it gives you a variety of ways to defeat enemies and all of the abilities are well balanced... well except for the rock throws that are in the game. I know I said I would talk about the positives first but most of the game has a great template but when you get deeper into it, you see how flawed some things are. So about the rock throw ability, when I first got the ability I noticed that it was a little bit too strong and thought that throughout the game it's strength would even out, but yeah that wasn't the case. I maxed out the throw ability as early as possible and it made the game feel like I am playing it on the easiest difficulty while the weapons were only useful when I ran out of energy (stopped being a problem when I maxed that out too).
I fully understand that anyone can choose to just not use the throw and focus on the other aspects, but in my case the other abilities and weapons seem good at first, only for me to realize that none of the other game styles proved to be fun, seeing as how the enemies became repetitive very fast, I needed the fighting to be at least a little fun but without the throw it all felt like a long chore.

Now moving on to the story. The lore and backstory of the game is honestly amazing, and so was the setting that they went with. The game was completely immersive in both storytelling and gameplay, I genuinely loved how the game was setup in terms of the world. My favorite part was probably the maze nearing the end but I will refrain from spoiling it as the mission is really great.

Now the story itself falls completely short at the end. The game builds up so much suspense and as you're coming to the final missions it leaves in you a state of "oh I can't imagine how this will end", you know it being a story about supernatural beings all that. But no, the story just falls completely flat in my opinion and it really seems as if it is a college essay that you would write at 3am the day before the deadline and don't have enough time to finish it. All the ending really does is give you new clothes and lets you free roam some boring side missions. I have a big problem with endings in games and movies, if the ending isn't better than the whole story then I dislike it, I know many people won't relate but this ending really ruined the experience for me.

About the other smaller talking points, the voice acting was mediocre for the most part, I really didn't feel any emotion coming from 80% of the characters (no disrespect to the talented voice actors who worked on the game, it just wasn't their best work). The music was amazing, it always set the mood well, the graphics were extremely good so I do not have any criticism there.

All in all the game is worth playing but more so as a side game that you would finish while you wait for some big release to come out. The most outstanding part of the game was the IP while everything else starts well but just jumps off a cliff midway through.

I decided to platinum this game because it was featured on PS+. It’s not bad, there’s nothing I hated about it, but there was equally nothing I loved about it. Some of the ideas and atmosphere were cool, but it was executed in such a way that made the most interesting thing about this game the ‘meh’ feeling I had as I trudged through the game. It’s perfectly okay. I don’t get the hype personally. Expand

Control introduces awesome new game mechanics that hold the promise of an innovative experience. However, the overall execution left me feeling like I was interacting with a mere shell of a game. While the gameplay mechanics were intriguing, they weren't enough to keep me consistently engaged. The game lacked the depth and content necessary to encourage repeated returns. The foundation of great mechanics is there, but the overall package leaves much to be desired in terms of substance and replayability. Expand

Impactful gunplay bolstered by a telekinetic twist, and a mystery you’ll be turning over for a long time afterwards. Welcome to the Oldest House, Director. [Issue#167, p.79]

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
