Favorite Thing: The story was really weird and pretty great.
Least Favorite Thing: The ending turned into "just kill a bunch of these baddies until they stop spawning".

I really fall in love with this amazing atmosphere. This story, graphic (or better say graphic design?), characters… everything is incredible in my taste. I really love characters in this game, some of them are just unforgettable (like Anti). And I simply amazed by the sound design in this game. Oh boy. Nothing in my entire life gives me goosebumps like the sound of "hisses" in background,I really fall in love with this amazing atmosphere. Excellent game. As many have noted, the clear standouts are the art direction, writing, world building, characters, and visuals. Framing its horror elements with a cold, bureaucratic scrutiny was a brilliant move that often lends itself to outright hilarity. If the setting, story, and style appeal to your personal tastes, you will have a blast with this. As far as the gameplay goes, the different powers are all satisfying to use, and the physics tech and destructible environments are simply superb. The combat mechanics are solid, but outside of some excellent side missions and combat encounters in the late game, Control suffers from one of the problems I had with Alan Wake — namely, it doesn’t always match the inventiveness of its combat mechanics with equally interesting combat scenarios. That being said, with the promise of upcoming free endgame content and future DLC, I’m hoping they will continue to rectify that issue.

As far as performance goes, I’ve been playing on the PS4 Pro — and while performance was admittedly rough at launch, the most recent patch has been a massive improvement, solving my biggest qualm with the game.

All in all, if you’re a fan of story-driven action games, I would highly recommend Control. This has supplanted Alan Wake as my favorite Remedy game, and even with some minor frustrations, I have loved every second spent with this game.

What a ride, what an experience, what a game! It's a perfect blend of gameplay, narrative and style. I just felt engaged the moment I played it. Coming into the game, I thought I would be bored by it's setting but I learnt to appreciate it's brutalist art style and it reminded me so much of where I used to live near the University of Chicago.

If you like atmospheric games like Bioshock, Alan Wake, Max Payne, Vampyr, where you are rewarded for playing it slow and explore everything, collecting documents and lore, you will love this game. It's story is told in a unique, non-direct style, where you have to pay attention 110% and even then, you may not understand all of it at once. That's what I love about it, it's sense of mystery and possibility. I love narratives that encourage discussion outside of the medium, in internet forums, youtube vids etc. It reminds me of TV shows like Lost and Twin Peaks where I had to read up more and watch it multiple times to pick up stuff I missed the first time round.

In summary, these are what I like and dislike about Control:

    Pros:
    Brilliant, atmospheric narrative
Great voiceovers and real-life acting (especially Dr Darling)
    Superb lead character
    Great gunplay
    Cool powers
    Exploration is very rewarding
    Excellent world-building
    Interesting side missions
    Engaging side characters
    Superb soundtrack
    Ahti

    Cons:
Slight FPS drop in intense battles
Background assets take time to load when you zoom in
    Respawn points are a pain
Slow loading times during fast travel

I really hope Remedy does more games. Can't wait for their next project. I will support this AWEsome developer always!

I was so hyped to play this game and once I got my mitts on it I was not disappointed! As a huge remedy fan I am pleased to report this is their strongest title yet. Thankfully they focused far more on the gameplay than any other aspect and if you enjoyed star wars the force unleashed then this is definitely going to impress you. Sadly even with a very well written story bolstered by the original voice actors of both max payne and alan wake, (sooo cool!) the story misses that exceptional quality for myself that would brand it as perfect score from me although it is very high quality and worth reading/listening/watching all the files/tapes/videos littered throughout the game. Cannot wait for the inevitable sequel!

You get to kill people at low hp by ripping them off the ground with such force that it breaks them. And then you get to hurl their lifeless corpses at other bad guys with such form it kills the other guy.

Hideo Kojima has a frekin cameo!

It all takes place in a building that is alive and moves and shifts and reorganizes itself right in front of your eyes.

The game is the start of something amazing. I feel bad for people who can't appreciate awesome.

But it never really ruined my experience or any boss fight. Wish there were more enemy types and more challenging enemy AI. Other than that - I just can’t stop playing it. This reminds me of a game from Valve back when they used to be cool. Oozing in a great sci-fi atmosphere, interesting story, and really cool innovative twists on shooter gameplay. The physics and environmental interactivity are some of the best I've seen in a game. It's a shame it doesn't seem to be selling more, I want to see more AAA games like this.

But the surroundings are great. I even read all these notes scattered around the building, because they are interesting and reveal the history of the game. The physics of destruction is made at a magnificent level. And the company itself is well built, precisely when you begin to get tired of the game, either the maze appears or the game ends. The idea with the double ending is great! And in general, I would rate the game at 10/10, but the technical implementation of the game is not the best. On PS4 Pro, the game slows down significantly in heavy scenes, the opening of the menu occurs with friezes. This could not win with patches even a year later. Expand

Remedy's new IP Control is a mind-twisting game with an interesting plot and lore. The world feels unique and organic and if you invest yourself in it you will enjoy it! Telekinesis powers are awesome and with mods you can make yourself powerful, Remedy made a superhero game without superheroes oh, and the environmental destruction? my god its beautiful! There are also couple powers you will miss if you don't play side missions, so you should invest yourself exploring The Oldest House trough and trough. Map is huge and there are lots of details you could miss if you don't pay attention. Like i said this game wants you to invest yourself in it so there are lots of collectibles to read more about this unique world. Some collectibles are funny and some are creepy. Also i loved small references to previous Remedy titles, and you gotta love Ahti the janitor. Puzzles are sometimes simple but unique. There are more stories to tell in this world, but you need to fill the planks!
Simply The Oldest House is a full season of Twin Peaks with cast from X-files.
After end credits i just wanted more and I was thinking "what did i miss in this game.." i will recommend it, but there are cons.

Rating is a low 9 almost an 8. This game has performance issues and after installing the game playing it couple hours, having a 8 hour break and starting it again, it worked better ?? Even thou those frame dips are still sometimes presents. Small patch could fix this issue because it could be a deal breaker for someone. This game is Vania-like so there is backtracking but that is not a issue for me i just wanted to point that out! The main thing about this game is powers and if you just run and shoot you will have bad time. Remedy wants you listen closely every detail if you don't you will get lost. Map has issues sometimes, which could be a problem if you don't focus. I noticed some npc's T-posing. Environment is pretty boring but still, there are couple good surprises on the way!

Now without effecting on rating, people say its repetitive, I saw it but I even thought God of War is repetitive sometimes, but then I understood that I didn't play this game on its full potential. Facial animations are fine. Someones says that this game is short.. i don't know it took me 16 hours to beat so for a single player game that is more than enough! Use all game mechanics! i mean i saw big youtubers playing this only "Running and gunning" they made this game look boring even thou I didn't have this problem! "Game doesn't tell you where to go" It does, or I'm just smart! (....I'm not smart) Game is generic, yeah if you don't invest on it.. and yeah, Epic exclusive was a bad move...but i think its more 505games fault.

Even thou this game had issues mostly performance vise, it didn't ruin my experience that's why i give it an 9 but those issues could ruin experiences with some players. Writing is different and the story is weird so if you don't like weird stuff this game could be a bummer, so lower ratings will happen. You don't need to buy every game right away. If you are not sure wait for sale or watch game play or read reviews. This game is not for everyone, but giving this game 0 or 2 is unprofessional and good example of troll reviews that Metacritic has.

But I must say, Welcome back Remedy this game made me happy!

It was a greedy move and they said they couldn’t even upgrade existing owner’s games and then accidentally did it, proving they lied, and then took them back. the game has a unique world and story full of lore that makes you wanna explore and learn about it 100 percent, the gameplay is fun and the powers have a great feel to them , there are only a few times that there are many enemies and explosions that are overloading the system and lowering fps but it only keeps for a few seconds so it's not that bad , just for that it gets 9 and not 10

I fell in love with minimalist level design , metal musics and also fantastic gameplay. One of most unique games I ever played on ps4. But some fps drops was annoying but there is not huge on ps4pro. Control was in bad luck to release in same year as sekiro. If it released one year later surely win the goty.

It's such a unique and original game, just the change I needed from playing other games on ps4. The story line is quite gripping, player engagement and advancement great and an environment like nothing I've played before. My only complaint is that the experience was over to quick. It's pretty quick to end game! Definitely worth playing guys!! Expand

P.s. I just have to wonder how people are giving 0-1 reviews either without ever playing the game / just because some one minor thing annoys them.. Or giving 0 on a platform that has nothing to do with the review, e.g. something to do with Epic etc.

People are saying bodies disappear without explanation but that's just false it's explained in the first 20 mins of the game. Alot of these reviews are just angry that it's not cod or the witcher. It's not too budget in nature but definitely an worth it in the end. If your
edge of buying it just wait for a sale but not a bad game in any sense. I enjoy games with creative forms of story telling and unique gameplay functions so I am biased but only to the extent that I have played many, and I mean many cash grab games so I know that this is one with some heart in its development. Has some lag and frame rate drops when things get too hectic or even just by unpauseing the game which can get annoying, and the enemies do share the same color form through the game. Color is dark and bureaucratic. But I do believe some of this stuff can be resolved in future updates and some were for story design. By far the worst of this game is certainly shown when the frame rates drop this it's is immersion breaking and can lead to a death when in a sever fight against the Hiss. Overall I think it was worth the buy but waiting for a sale isn't the worst option giving it is a single player game that you don't have to worry about competing with other players.

Just finished the main storyline about an hour ago and here are my thoughts.

I have to say that I loved every bit of this game. Given there were moments of frustration but only because the game doesn't lend any kind of hand-holding whatsoever. That's a good thing! Almost every kind of game out there right now has some sort of indicator guiding the user through the story and through each objective. This game only offers you a map with a highlighted region of interest. All other sources of information are gathered by story narrative or by the environment. There were many times that I felt true accomplishment when I solved one of the many puzzles in the game. As many of them rely on environmental clues to informer the player.

The environment is very brutalist. The game reminds me of the movie "Beyond The Black Rainbow"; A lot of the colors and simple geometry and futuristic undertones. Its got that same kinda crazy scientist secret government vibe to it as well. The graphics are very impressive, a lot of physics and detailed modeling and lighting throughout. Almost every single frame of this game is picturesque. There were moments of performance dipping but only limited to the menu system when you exit or close the menus. Since 99% of my game existed outside the menu system I feel this a non-issue. Something that will get patched soon I suspect. Being on PC I didn't experience the frame dipping from physics as console players are experiencing(sucks to suck console players ;p ).

I really enjoy games with deep story elements and my goodness this delivers in full. You have lots of really good voice acting and story elements with the main characters but this is a small sliver of the content. Additional story comes in many forms. Littered throughout the levels are all kinds of documents and memos and folders of research that you can pour-over. Additionally, to that, there are audio recording in a kind of Bioshock fashion. But really the best kind of story comes from the these VHS and Reel to Reel live-action recordings. Some, disturbing, and some borderline hilarious productions especially towards the later levels.

I think a lot of players were looking for a Max Payne kindof game from Remedy with all the talk of the combat from other reviews. To me, combat is a nice addition to a game built around a major story experience. I honestly had a lot of fun with the combat. The telekinesis powers grow and become more powerful as you progress and you turn into a master Jedi with a full seat on the council. Once you unlock the Charge gun type you become the infinite rick, a god. Then you really start to push the envelope of the physics and destruction engine this game offers. It has a nice progression that is non-linear, I finished
the game without unlocking all the powers for instance,

All in all the game is great. It disturbed me, it made me laugh, It left me in awe, and I highly recommend this to someone who is looking for a deep story to get lost in and continue even after the credits roll.

9/10 Good job Remedy(how much acid did you take to make this game?)

I was immediately drawn into the story from the very first moment ant it kept me hooked until the very end. It was entertaining and enjoyable but it has its flaws and is clearly outshined by the exploration and the combat. Let me emphasise for the combat system alone I recommend this game to anyone who loves for action games. It is that good!

For me the fighting mechanics are one of the very best in video game history. This is the combat system EA wishes they had for their Star Wars games because in Control some of your powers like Levitation and Telekinesis have never been done so snappy and satisfying. Period. I could literally play hours after hours killing randomly spawnings waves of the same enemies due to how perfect and satisfying the combat is. And I haven't even talked about the service weapon and its five modes which each can be individually upgraded with weapon modifications. In combination you're always switching between slinging huge rocks at enemies and levitating above their heads while barraging them with bullets from your service weapon. It is a dream come true.

Combine this with the vast and intruiging game world of the "Oldest House" which is the home of the Federal Bureau of Control. There's so much to explore in this game. The world strongly rewards players for checking out every corner. It is jampacked full of mysterious memos and audio files which adds to the dense atmosphere of this mysterious building. I think I read/listened to more than 90% of the > 200 collectibles. I couldnt get enough of it and am looking forward to the DLCs.

I also quite liked the characters of the game which are interesting and unqiue.

The only things that frustrated me were the convoluted mini-map (you really get lost too often), too few stand-out missions (More missions like in the Maze please) and some intense difficulty spikes in a couple of optional boss fights. It is a real shame that Remedy hid the two coolest and by far best boss fights in optional side-missions while presenting some rather bland and boring encounters in the main campaign.

That being said. I had a lot of fun with this game and recommend it to anyone on PC. I have heard that there are some problems on consoles though so you might have to be careful there.

There is a good mix of gameplay and some of the areas are locked until you find new access key cards and abilities to progress further, so there is plenty of back tracking to find new secrets and collectibles as well as hidden quests and bosses.

In the end this is a game that stays with you once you turn it off. Definitely worth a higher score than what it has here. I guess many people want more action or more of a multitude of things. But this is a balance of game play, story & combat, . and for me it balances perfectly.
The down sides are maybe a bit too much of her internal dialogues, and the complex and always cumbersome personal and weapons mods. And it is true, it does glitch a bit but nothing that is bothering and worth it of it is the price for all the details I each room.

Level design is incredible, art direction reminds a fair bit of the tv show LOST (in particular the parts about The Dharma Initiative), which is really not a bad thing. It has this old school science vibe which I find very cool. A lot of Jungian psychology and the like for those interested in that, as well as a huge pinch of mysticism.

Graphics and animations are top notch, and my only criticism is that the game's environments sometimes get repetitive with its brutalist-styled architecture. It's really not bad but a bit more change of scenery every now and then could have mixed well with the theme of the game. There is, however, one excellent part of the game that stands out in this respect, but you'll see that when you play it..

Since I'm half-Finnish I also have to praise the game for including Ahti, his tango music, accent and overall take on the world around him... whoever he is...

The combat is rather tough but rewarding once you get the hang of it's many mechanics and options. The story is fine with inspirations from the X-Files and Twilight Zone but characters are possibly the weakest part of the game but the style and aesthetics more then make up for with almost every frame looking like an abstract painting brought to life by a disturbed artist. The fluid gameplay with great art direction is a must play if your a fan of Remedy or any third person shooter for that matter. This is my game of the year by a long shot. Expand

The whole game uses a metroidvania style, where you return to earlier zones, unlocking new parts of them. This is accomplished through security card levels and quests rather than items, but, it's still a good way of navigating the environment.

The story itself is well told and more interesting than most games these days. It doesn't hold your hand and explain things. However, if you listen to the dialogue, and talk to the NPCs you'll piece it together. If you are really invested, there's plenty of additional material to find in the game and read.

The only real weakness for me is that enemy variety does get a bit repetitive after a while.

    Excellent game with:
    -candy graphics
-realistic physics(seriously I spent hour crashing concrete and other objects)
    -great level design
The weak aspects of game are partly story line and shooting mechanics(more interesting to throw concrete at enemies than use guns in this game)

Top 5 PS4 games I've played. Great story and atmosphere, badass fights with weapons and superpowers. Took me around 25 hours to platinum. Played on PS4 Pro, didn't crash and no problems. Would recommend.

It's hard to get more specific without spoiling things but the storyline to me was satisfying with some very bad-ass elements to it. The game looks stunning esp with lighting (seems raytraced?) and the sound design (and, without spoiling too much, music) just pulls you in.

Really enjoyed this game. I found that it captured my interest very quickly when I started playing it; it then rapidly developed into a game I couldn't put down.

The mechanics of the game start off fairly simple, and it does a great job of gradually drip feeding new tools and weapons throughout the game, such that you never feel overwhelmed or lost with all the different options.

The mechanics of the game start off fairly simple, and it does a great job of gradually drip feeding new tools and weapons throughout the game, such that you never feel overwhelmed or lost with all the different options. However, before you know it, you'll have a range of different abilities and munitions in your arsenal ready to be unleashed. In particular, once you unlock the levitate ability, the combat system and overall gameplay becomes particularly exciting, unique and satisfying.

The storyline and the world are absolutely fascinating. It has a really intriguing sci-fi mystery about it. No long cutscenes or huge documents to read, really supporting the immersion. I'm often bored with game storylines but found this truly captivating.

I enjoyed the fact that your ammo "recharges" rather than needing to constantly scavenge for resources. This is a good example of where the developers have done a great job of removing certain boring or frustrating elements that you have in similar games and allowed you to just have fun with the gameplay. I did have one major frustration the fact that you lose 10% of your "source" (money) every time you die though. I felt like this really discourages risk-taking and experimentation, and means that some challenging boss fights, and the jukebox missions can end up being quite a frustration as you see your bankroll dwindling (I'd recommend the developers watch a TED talk called "The Super Mario Effect" to learn more about the negative psychology of such a mechanic!).

The navigation was very tricky at times. I appreciate the fact that the developers perhaps don't want to ruin the immersion by putting huge markers into the game world, but the map is tough to follow and - from what I've seen of other reviews and comments online - I'm not the only person to feel like this.

Overall, a really excellent game with fun gameplay, superb graphics (especially some of the close-ups during conversations) and a brilliant storyline.

I would also like to point out that even though I'm giving this game a great review that others like my cousin would not be so generous. He had problems with the no difficulty setting and didn't even make it halfway through the game. He also didn't like the checkpoints were so far from where he died. I do feel like they should have remedied the situation for other types of players as it would have attracted a much broader audience. If you like intense combat that always keeps you guessing then I recommend this game completely. Expand

Just the first hours of this game blew me away. The visual style, the combat mechanics, the upgrade system and the characters just seem so interesting and connect very well. Courtney Hope's performance as Jesse has been great so far, even with the internal dialogue being a little overused, the Janitor is even more interesting (and funny). There's a great incentive for exploration and it's rewarding that we can find boxes with upgrade materials like Jedi Fallen Order. The environment is one of the best parts too, acting like that Doctor Strange scene where everything is upside down, added to the fact that it's very destructible, only thing that I wish I could do is climb walls or something like that. The combat makes a good balance between run n' gun and dodge/cover play-style, and since you have both the gun and your own innate abilities there will always be a variety of attacks you can do. The weapon modding is satisfying, it gives you 4 types of weapon fire rate plus upgrades and the personal modding utility is a nice addition as well. On the other side of the battle, the enemies are increasingly difficult and the variation is enough to keep testing your abilities. The puzzle parts of this game I didn’t expect, and so far I’ve had a hard time doing them but I like the dynamic - challenge that this creates. Last thing I wanted to talk about is cinematic and cut-scenes, Matthew Porretta, my man, you did one hell of a job. I’d usually skip through this parts but every one of them I have watched and seeing you were Game Awards Best Performance Nominee brings a smile to my face cause it’s well deserved. Props to James McCaffrey as well.

The downsides for me have been: for one performance, I have a PS4 (not Pro) and there's been times were graphics will stutter, mostly in heavy action combat. The map design could use a scroll feature or something since I can't explore it efficiently at times. The save system is alright but I wish it could autosave more efficiently, I don’t appreciate having to do a combat 3 times because I died to a boss that happened 10 minutes after I did that combat.

Overall this game gives me insane inFamous vibes, which is one of my favorites from the PS3 (Second Son didn't do justice to it). I can't wait to complete the game and both DLC's since I bought the Deluxe Edition. Great job Remedy!

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
