Uncover the chilling mysteries of this RPG-investigation game, descending deep into a world of cosmic horrors, creeping madness, and shrouded Old Gods within Lovecraft's iconic universe.

The Cthulhu Mythos has been fascinating audiences for generations, growing to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned and giving birth to countless stories, novels, movies, tabletop and videogames since the original publication of H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Adaptions and references have formed a widespread legacy stretching back to the very beginning of the 20th century, latching on to the key fear of the human psyche: that of the unknown. Now, Call of Cthulhu will bring the mythos to life like never before, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

In this world, nothing is as it seems. Sanity is an irregular bedfellow, all too often replaced by the whisperings in the dark. Strange creatures, weird science, and shadowy cults dominate the Cthulhu Mythos, intent on realizing their mad schemes to bring about the end of everything. Your mind will suffer -- balancing a razor-thin line between sanity and madness, your senses will be disrupted until you question the reality of everything around you. Trust no one. Creeping shadows hide lurking figures... and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

Call of Cthulhu is the Cthulhu RPG I never realized I needed in my life. From the moment the atmosphere shifted upon entry to Darkwater, I was hooked. The Cthulhu mythology is presented with obvious appreciation for the source material, crafting a story of cosmic horror and the cults being crazy enough to worship those beings. Aside from some difficulty with sneaking, the game makes the descent into madness... fun? Can one have fun when descending into madness?

If the devs had simply dropped the skill points and let players freely explore at their own pace, it would have been a better experience. It’s still a good one, though, and a required play for anyone with even the slightest interest in the mythos that inspired it. Ratin

Call of Cthulhu is a beautifully twisted cosmic horror. Although it has it’s issues here and there, and doesn’t look as good as you would expect a PS4 game to look, it has enough moments to really grip you and keep you playing. The story is an example of really great writing, with enjoyable characters and a mind-bending plot. The gameplay is solid, with only certain segments that become frustrating and repetitive.

Like the creature itself, Call of Cthulhu is a convoluted mix of ideas; some god, some bad. Being based in Lovecraft's short story guarantees a great atmosphere that fans of his works will surely loved, but here, the cosmic horrors are more myth than reality.

Cyanide obviously care very much for the source material, and their earnest desire to do right by the Sisyphean task of a celebratory Lovecraft adaptation is hard to fault. I may have struggled with the poor stealth segments, but I did feel compelled by its campy cast and cosmic intrigue to see the game through to completion — something that can't be said of Infogrames' or Bethesda's attempts. Cyanide's take on Call of Cthulhu is undoubtedly the best yet, for better or worse.
  6. Call of Ctulhu successfully impacts the player with its atmosphere and story which makes you curious as you play. The places we see in the game and the story is well made, but we also see the effects of low budget developments in the overall package.

Call of Cthulhu's atmosphere, especially early on, is delicious, but it's let down by wayward pacing and plot and some muddy graphics.

Very atmospheric game. For lovers of creativity Lovecraft the most it. The graphics are not at an ideal level, but for me this is not the main thing.

Not enough gameplay, no real exploration. I had to do it a second time after a few month to make up my mind, because there were still stuff I liked in the game, as a Lovecraft's fan. And now, I like it. Still not perfect, some parts are even bad I think, or have no logic. Like sometimes, you'll play another character, who has the same skills as the main one, who is supposed to be a detective, and a guy who can hide and stuff. But when you play someone else, it's the exact same gameplay. Too bad, I thought they could have done something great with the change of perspective, but they didn't. otherwise, it's a pretty good atmospheric game. The horror of the unseen, the story, it's familiar for fans, and a lovely love letter. Gameplay is really simple even if sometimes hard (one boss in particular, if you don't know what to do, you'll yell at your screen), graphics are not great but the artistic direction is interesting and good, sound is great. This game had such potential, but now I have completed it, it's potential ends in vain. As a Lovecraft fan i natrually bought this game onThis game had such potential, but now I have completed it, it's potential ends in vain. As a Lovecraft fan i natrually bought this game on release day in the UK. It is based on the author's original story but adds details and events of it's own. I've been told it mimics the board game but I cannot compare not having played it. It starts out very promising with an intruiging L.A Noire style case investigation into a family who died under suspiscious circumstances. Ass the storyline unfolds it becomes darker and blends well with the atmospherics created for it. However, the intruige halts about half way through for me when choices you make restrict you from seeing certain parts of the game without playing over from the start. It's diceroll engine provides a selection of answers depending on how capable you character is which is a nice element that clearly relates to the board game.
Unfortunately it takes a nose dive during the second half where the lack of choice and free roam becomes more evident. The on-rails feeling reminds me of consoles in the early 2000's. Some of the choices you make also affect the endings, but these are so superficial at the time that you can miss them, or pick the wrong one, which restricts you from seeing the endings without starting over.
Some of the skin and rock textures are very nice but the character movement is somewhat clumsy. The atmospherics and scenes of mental disturbance are well portrayed but happen so often it eventually loses effect. The voice acting is ok, not the worst at all, but conviction seems lacking in certain parts of the storyline to warrant some of the conversations you have. Some of the puzzles and routes are also so simple in places it can feel insulting. This isn't helped with the overused floating mist effect that overlays everywhere you go and the endless walking, particularly in the final chapter which seems to make you climb a set of stairs with no interaction for ten minutes in an attempt to biuld tension. The two main endings, although tense, ultimately flawed the story and could have expanded. Here is a list of positives and negatives:
    positives:
    Atmosphere
    storyline
    character skills system
    some good scenes and scares
    item and text discovery
    great intro
    good level design
    Reconstruction scenes

    nagatives:
    clumsy movement
    some very simple puzzles
    on rails feeling
    overused atmospherics
    monotonous set pieces
    superficial choices
    flawed and brief endings

This being said, I would say that it is worth a play, especially for a fan of the genre. It could be compared structurally to games like Bioshock and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but ultimately lacks the punch of either of those.
