Great little experience if you like Lovecraftian horror or even if you just played and enjoyed the board game to some degree. It does a great job of portraying the horror of the unseen. Will definitely play through again. Expand

Actually it’s not a wonderful game. However you can’t stop play it again and again. You can enjoy this world, and find some special view to this world. Don’t lose your mind and find the truth.

Second I’d like to mention this game has great world building and really does a great job in immersing the player in the theme of madness. Unfortunately this is where I have to end my compliments for this game. The game suffers majorly in the character building. For someone like myself who is a big dnd fan it’s not that big of a deal but in the video game market characters are shallow, forgettable, and in some moments in important scenes you will be like “who is that again?” Second the game looks like something that was supposed to be on the xbox360. It’s not bad but again in the market it’ll be off putting for people. Lastly for many who are looking for a horror game that’ll keep you up at night it’s not this. While I believe the game is tense and has a few great scenes it pans out a lot like a story game. Again I want to reiterate that is not bad for the target audience. But please be warned that this is made for a small crowd of people. If you are looking for a game that makes you question reality. Come truth seeker. If not there are plenty of other games. Expand

A terrible walking simulator. The game holds your hand from the beginning till the end without giving you any gaming value. The mechanics can be summed up like this: walk to the object, activate instinct mode, wait for the cutscene. Do that for 10 hours and congrats, you beat the game.

Everyting about this game feels empty, cheap and lazy. Here's a quick list of things that went south:

-Only one shambler as a direct paranormal opponent - really?
-Hud-screen is littered with stupid messages and shining markers (the devs think you're an idiot)
    -instinct mode
    -Level design
    -Pacing
    -Character animations
    -Glitches
    -Lackluster endings and story
-RPG elements (Why are they here? Almost no effect on story)
-No horror element (only 2 semi-scary encounters)
    -Farting lanterns
    -Focus Home Entertainment

One of the biggest disappointments this year, avoid this garbage at all cost.

However, none of those games ruined the entire experience by floating a bright white light over every single thing you can interact with - even doorknobs! That's right, and you CANNOT turn this feature off. Every single book or letter you can read, every drawer you can open, every doorknob you can turn, has a bright white light on it -- so the whole game is basically just walking to each light and clicking. It's like a hand-holding walkthrough is built into the game that you cannot get rid of. Also, even some of the WALKING is done for you. At certain moments the game takes over and you're on a rail as you walk along and talk to a person. Very very very bad ideas. These just spoil the game for me. So I have uninstalled until they fix these things. If they fix these things.

Note that if you go to Cyanide Studios' web site to ask about this, you will find that Cthulu is not listed among the games they are accepting inquiries about and they state they will not respond to any questions about games not listed. So there is no opportunity to get support for this game from the developer!!!! Believe it or not.

As the evening goes on however, he's having a beer to much and the session starts to get a bit weird. However, everyone had fun and you leave in a good mood.

The graphics are average at their best and pretty bad at their lowest. Puzzles are alright and there is no combat system. It's primarily narratively and stealth focused. It's also not a lovecraftian monster cabinet - which is good, because the game is at its best when there isn't a monster around. Much like Soma, which is a good comparison as well.

In the end, if you're looking for an interactive lovecraft story, this game is currently your best bet as far as i'm aware off. If you look for a lot of cool lovecraftian monsters and a bigger focus on combat, this game might not be what you are looking for.

So I was rather happy to open this game and find that the game is filled to the brim with nods to all of Lovecraft's work (both Cthulhu and otherwise), the atmosphere is spot on, even with the more last-gen look of the graphics it still works. When it comes to gameplay it's a bit more old-school then current games are, for me it felt like a game you loved in the mid 2000's and re-opened after 10 years, and you realize it's really as good as you remember it.
Sure the AI and gameplay feel a bit dated, but it really did not bother me at all because everything the game did well (story, atmosphere, mechanics, ...) it did so well that the lesser points (graphics, dodgy FPS sequence) just didn't really bother me.
I played trough the game twice now (PS4) and am thinking about a third play trough with a different build to experience some of the scenes in a different way.
Now, I do have to admit that maybe if this wasn't a Lovecraft game I might have liked it less, but let's face it, it is a valid reason to like something more.

Call of Cthulhu is a prefect example of a game that is more than the sum of its parts. It is obvious that the game did not have a huge budget, people move awkwardly, every second npc shares the same face, and there are too many find this than do that puzzles.

The story on the other hand really sucks you in and for me at least, that is more than worth the cost of admission.

Early on in the game you need to lift a hatch in the floor using a winch. You need to find a handle for this and low and behold there is a handle on the floor. You put it on and then you still cant do anything. You search again. You find a rachet device that you put on it. Still you cant do anything. You look around the wharehouse again and find a gear to complete the set up.

Why couldnt i at least try to open the hatch and then it close after i stopped cranking. SHOWING the player they needed something else to make it through to the next area. This is an early event but it happens almost every time there is a puzzle in this game.

Its not hand holding if you show players why they cant get through. Having them complete part of the puzzle that has multiple unseen parts and then have no feed back is bad. This isnt true for all puzzles in this game, but probably over 40% which is to high.

Also the shambler part basically ruined the game for me. The AI is so delayed. It makes the section so terrible i doubt anyone had fun playing it.

It is a narrative game and as such it works excellently. Its main mechanics include exploration, puzzle solving and a slight survival horror and RPG component. If you like Lovecraft's work, you will enjoy this game, the setting is quite good in that respect. However, there are superior games in the survival horror genre. 'Soma' or 'Alien: Isolation' surpass it.

As a Lovecraft fan i natrually bought this game on release day in the UK. It is based on the author's original story but adds details and events of it's own. I've been told it mimics the board game but I cannot compare not having played it. It starts out very promising with an intruiging L.A Noire style case investigation into a family who died under suspiscious circumstances. Ass the storyline unfolds it becomes darker and blends well with the atmospherics created for it. However, the intruige halts about half way through for me when choices you make restrict you from seeing certain parts of the game without playing over from the start. It's diceroll engine provides a selection of answers depending on how capable you character is which is a nice element that clearly relates to the board game.
Unfortunately it takes a nose dive during the second half where the lack of choice and free roam becomes more evident. The on-rails feeling reminds me of consoles in the early 2000's. Some of the choices you make also affect the endings, but these are so superficial at the time that you can miss them, or pick the wrong one, which restricts you from seeing the endings without starting over.
Some of the skin and rock textures are very nice but the character movement is somewhat clumsy. The atmospherics and scenes of mental disturbance are well portrayed but happen so often it eventually loses effect. The voice acting is ok, not the worst at all, but conviction seems lacking in certain parts of the storyline to warrant some of the conversations you have. Some of the puzzles and routes are also so simple in places it can feel insulting. This isn't helped with the overused floating mist effect that overlays everywhere you go and the endless walking, particularly in the final chapter which seems to make you climb a set of stairs with no interaction for ten minutes in an attempt to biuld tension. The two main endings, although tense, ultimately flawed the story and could have expanded. Here is a list of positives and negatives:
    positives:
    Atmosphere
    storyline
    character skills system
    some good scenes and scares
    item and text discovery
    great intro
    good level design
    Reconstruction scenes

    nagatives:
    clumsy movement
    some very simple puzzles
    on rails feeling
    overused atmospherics
    monotonous set pieces
    superficial choices
    flawed and brief endings

This being said, I would say that it is worth a play, especially for a fan of the genre. It could be compared structurally to games like Bioshock and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but ultimately lacks the punch of either of those.

As a Lovecraft fan, who enjoys the mythos, I loved this game. Dark, moody, graphics were good and the story was good too. Thoroughly recommended.

The environments shown in the game are very high in quality and fit the tone, and fine voice acting, the game still ends up feeling mediocre due to the stiff character animations, bad lip-sync, and most importantly: the story falling apart near the end and not having a satisfying conclusion, mainly as a result of the lack of consequences to your 'choices' earlier in the game.

In this game, it's possible to summon Cthulhu so at least because of this it is worth playing. A fun and atmospheric game that I played through once and probably won't revisit. The bad parts (the unnecessary shooting section) are generally overshadowed by the atmospheric gameplay sections and if they make a sequel, I'll give it a shot.

Had a LOT of potential that it didn't quite carry off.

Story was okay, combat was eh, and acting was eh. The character animations didn't match with the dialogue either, and while I can forgive that with games that originated with a different language, I'm 90% sure this one originated with English-language animation/writers/actors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty poor for the ambitions highlighted during the development. The story itself seems good as well as the narrative. But the game play is boring. Everything is so linear, music is dull that at the end you just want to finish it as soon as possible.
Graphics are good and for the Lovecraft mythology fan I will anyways recommend to play it. Especially because of the silhouette of the dark god far away in the storm at the end of the game.

    Neutral:

the voice acting, I don't want to say it's bad but it's not good either, accompanied with the static first person perspective you're locked in makes dialogue a bit dry.

Like sometimes, you'll play another character, who has the same skills as the main one, who is supposed to be a detective, and a guy who can hide and stuff. But when you play someone else, it's the exact same gameplay. Too bad, I thought they could have done something great with the change of perspective, but they didn't. otherwise, it's a pretty good atmospheric game. The horror of the unseen, the story, it's familiar for fans, and a lovely love letter. Call of Cthulhu’s strange and eerie visuals somewhat succeed in recreating the atmosphere of Cthulhu mythology. However, instead of contributing to the story, stats such as Sanity feel like they deny the player’s trial-and-error. From shooting to stealth segments, the wide array of different systems needed more polish as well.

At best, this is just a very gimmicky adventure game. Each level having its own thing is a bit refreshing from always having to pixel-hunt for objects, tying simplistic stats into the mix adds some planning, and the way this title forces players to commit to their actions is nice. Sadly, as the journey reaches its half-way point, the story unravels in a very unsatisfying manner. Characters are built up and don't get the proper pay-off, while some disappear entirely.

Call of Cthulhu is not a horror game as such, It’s a title filled up with suspense, amusing moments, even surrealism is in there, which, to be honest, is the most entertaining part. Also there are moments in which you don’t know what are you doing playing this game while you could be doing anything else. Lovecraft’s universe is placed in a game that cannot reach the immensity of Lovecraft’s imagery. And It ends up being a heap of circumstances and mechanics so positive as others that we should left behind in the past.
