Great little experience if you like Lovecraftian horror or even if you just played and enjoyed the board game to some degree. It does a great job of portraying the horror of the unseen. Will definitely play through again. Expand

As a Lovecraft fan i natrually bought this game on release day in the UK. It is based on the author's original story but adds details and events of it's own. I've been told it mimics the board game but I cannot compare not having played it. It starts out very promising with an intruiging L.A Noire style case investigation into a family who died under suspiscious circumstances. Ass the storyline unfolds it becomes darker and blends well with the atmospherics created for it. However, the intruige halts about half way through for me when choices you make restrict you from seeing certain parts of the game without playing over from the start. It's diceroll engine provides a selection of answers depending on how capable you character is which is a nice element that clearly relates to the board game.
Unfortunately it takes a nose dive during the second half where the lack of choice and free roam becomes more evident. The on-rails feeling reminds me of consoles in the early 2000's. Some of the choices you make also affect the endings, but these are so superficial at the time that you can miss them, or pick the wrong one, which restricts you from seeing the endings without starting over.
Some of the skin and rock textures are very nice but the character movement is somewhat clumsy. The atmospherics and scenes of mental disturbance are well portrayed but happen so often it eventually loses effect. The voice acting is ok, not the worst at all, but conviction seems lacking in certain parts of the storyline to warrant some of the conversations you have. Some of the puzzles and routes are also so simple in places it can feel insulting. This isn't helped with the overused floating mist effect that overlays everywhere you go and the endless walking, particularly in the final chapter which seems to make you climb a set of stairs with no interaction for ten minutes in an attempt to biuld tension. The two main endings, although tense, ultimately flawed the story and could have expanded. Here is a list of positives and negatives:
    positives:
    Atmosphere
    storyline
    character skills system
    some good scenes and scares
    item and text discovery
    great intro
    good level design
    Reconstruction scenes

    nagatives:
    clumsy movement
    some very simple puzzles
    on rails feeling
    overused atmospherics
    monotonous set pieces
    superficial choices
    flawed and brief endings

This being said, I would say that it is worth a play, especially for a fan of the genre. It could be compared structurally to games like Bioshock and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but ultimately lacks the punch of either of those.

Graphics and animations look last gen. The budget looks low production. Voice acting can make or break a story driven type of game like this and it is kind of ropy. I laughed my ass off at Cat. The environments shown in the game are very high in quality and fit the tone, and fine voice acting, the game still ends up feeling mediocre due to the stiff character animations, bad lip-sync, and most importantly: the story falling apart near the end and not having a satisfying conclusion, mainly as a result of the lack of consequences to your 'choices' earlier in the game.

A fun and atmospheric game that I played through once and probably won't revisit. The bad parts (the unnecessary shooting section) are generally overshadowed by the atmospheric gameplay sections and if they make a sequel, I'll give it a shot.

Had a LOT of potential that it didn't quite carry off.

Story was okay, combat was eh, and acting was eh. The character animations didn't match with the dialogue either, and while I can forgive that with games that originated with a different language, I'm 90% sure this one originated with English-language animation/writers/actors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty poor for the ambitions highlighted during the development. The story itself seems good as well as the narrative. But the game play is boring. Everything is so linear, music is dull that at the end you just want to finish it as soon as possible.
Graphics are good and for the Lovecraft mythology fan I will anyways recommend to play it. Especially because of the silhouette of the dark god far away in the storm at the end of the game.

Like sometimes, you'll play another character, who has the same skills as the main one, who is supposed to be a detective, and a guy who can hide and stuff. But when you play someone else, it's the exact same gameplay. Too bad, I thought they could have done something great with the change of perspective, but they didn't. otherwise, it's a pretty good atmospheric game. The horror of the unseen, the story, it's familiar for fans, and a lovely love letter. Call of Cthulhu’s strange and eerie visuals somewhat succeed in recreating the atmosphere of Cthulhu mythology. However, instead of contributing to the story, stats such as Sanity feel like they deny the player’s trial-and-error. From shooting to stealth segments, the wide array of different systems needed more polish as well.

At best, this is just a very gimmicky adventure game. Each level having its own thing is a bit refreshing from always having to pixel-hunt for objects, tying simplistic stats into the mix adds some planning, and the way this title forces players to commit to their actions is nice. Sadly, as the journey reaches its half-way point, the story unravels in a very unsatisfying manner. Characters are built up and don't get the proper pay-off, while some disappear entirely.

Call of Cthulhu is not a horror game as such, It’s a title filled up with suspense, amusing moments, even surrealism is in there, which, to be honest, is the most entertaining part. Also there are moments in which you don’t know what are you doing playing this game while you could be doing anything else. Lovecraft’s universe is placed in a game that cannot reach the immensity of Lovecraft’s imagery. And It ends up being a heap of circumstances and mechanics so positive as others that we should left behind in the past.
