Expand

Many of the extra requirements for missions are very unclear leading to lot's of failures because you just don't know what is expected, so often times you spend vast amount of time to complete the first extra requirement only to take one mistep with the other and you lose all the extra rewards. Last fight is really a blooper, worst in the series. And the biggest crime is that in the end all the trouble you wenth through was for nothing. Expand

However i really enjoyed this assassins creed because of how polished it is and how much effort you can see has gone into the game. The map is decent sized and getting around it is pretty straightforward. you can go around on a carriage and use the grappling hook. which is something that was very cool to introduce to the assassins creed universe. pretty much everything about this game runs smoothly. the combat feels satisfying, the climbing feels fluent and fantastic. and the city of victorian london feels very alive. the side missions are fun and interesting and contain some of histories most interesting people. they're very engaging and have a lot of personality and variation which is something ubisoft tend not to do. As with playing a lot of assassins creed games you feel compelled to dig deeper into the history. victorian london is definetly a interesting setting and i'm pretty sure the developers knew it was a no brainer. As for the actual characters Eve and Jacob fry are okay. They're a bit cheesy but they have colourful personalities and the writing for them isn't too bad. the musical score is fantastic and i always enjoyed hearing it in the background of a fight or a chase. This is also the first assassins creed which introduced the levelling up system and although its not too crippling and its pretty lenient when compared to origins i still remain with the opinion that assassins creed doesn't really need an rpg style level cap system and it would probably be a more interesting game without it. the activities that need to be done in order to level up can be considered tedious and it'd be better if it was a bit more varied. despite that i really enjoyed the game, its story, the characters, the music, the design of the city and loved the history. Assassin's Creed Syndicate more than compensates for the blunder that was Assassin's Creed Unity. In fact I didn't play Unity at all because the reviews were so dissuading. Whilst the mission structure is more than adequate, the story suffers a little due to a plot decision midway through and the final boss fight is poorly designed.

Overall, Syndicate redeems the franchise after it's predecessor's mistakes and has me eager for the next Assassin's Creed game.

This instancing and spamming of the various mechanics and scenarios across the open-world is disappointing. This is made that much more evident when compared against Unity, which boasts far superior level design, controls, story, pacing, and overall polish. However, this is an Ubisoft game so the map is absolutely packed with pointless collectables and boring side quests. I know you don't have to do them but I'm something of a completionist and also you need to do a certain amount to level up enough to be competitive.

If Assassin's Creed Syndicate was more focused with a smaller map and less distractions this would have been a very good game. instead you spend 90% of your time clearing the map of random things and when you come back to the story you've forgotten who you're helping and why. Less is more Ubisoft!

For those that don’t like that aspect of the AC lore, it delivers without pulling you out of the Animus in a way that some people didn’t like with others in the series such as AC2 and AC4. - Story quite empty, just killing, the Twins are always talking about Father, but father never appears, like I said they have no past.

    - Definitely a bad game, the world is quite empty with a huge lack of interest, the gang role is artificial, with perks that make the game easier in a huge way,

This is my favorite AC game to date, Much better than unity and origins. The story is amazing, and exploring london is one of my favorite things to do when I am bored wit the story. Having been to london several times, I found locations in Syndicate that matched locations from where I was staying. Add this game to a list of Ubisoft's best!

Syndicate sees the return of a more traditional feeling Assassin's Creed style of gameplay. The changes to the established formula made in Unity are still present, only now much better implemented. I still think it's kind of dumb to have a leveling up system in an AC game (why should I have to buy abilities I started off with in the other games?), it too won me over. There's a real feeling of growing more powerful and capable as you progress through Syndicate's many activities.

This entry of the Assassin's Creed series takes some notes form the playbooks of some of gaming's biggest open-world franchises. Most notably Rocksteady's Arkham games. The open environments the missions take place in, as well as the wide variety of items and abilities at your disposal, encourage experimentation and allow you to find your own solutions and playstyles like never before. Even the fluid combat system that has you juggling multiple foes brought back memories of taking out thugs as The Dark Knight. The inclusion of multiple paths to your target and various opportunities that can lead to unique kills reinvigorate the series' big assassinations. Things like new zip-line tool and the inclusion of carriages make navigating the open-world more exciting than ever. The latter giving the game something of a Grand Theft Auto vibe.

The story is where things take a slight hit. You'll meet cool characters and the protagonists are great. Kudos to Ubisoft for finally having making an entry in the main series with a playable female character (even if she does have to share the spotlight with a male counterpart). I'll even forgive them for the fact that she isn't the more likable of two leads. The events themselves just aren't that interesting. Some bland villain is taking over London, is after some precursor artifact, and blah, blah, blah. We've all seen it before. Only never with such a dorky final boss fight. The modern day story continues going nowhere. Only now there's some stuff about cloning! We just watch Rebecca and Shaun do some stuff in the occasional cutscene because the people at Ubisoft think we like them for some reason. While killing off Desmond was a pretty gutsy and unexpected move, it's clear they haven't had any idea what to do with this part of the series for some time now. They've even removed it from the gameplay side of things.

Narrative shortcomings aside, this is a phenomenal return to form for Assassin's Creed. One that even brings some much needed change to things. It's brimming with content to the point where you won't even care about the lack of multiplayer. This some of the smoothest gameplay the series has seen and one of it's best settings. Syndicate makes the series worth returning to after it reached it's lowest point with Unity. Let me tell you, it's one heck of a comeback.

    So.....

Only recommended if you're super hyped about Victorian/steampunk London setting! The virtual rendition of London is marvelous and interesting. The game wastes both setting and characters on rompy entertainment-flick-clichés, and gameplay that too often collapses under annoying controls and weird, embarrassing bugs. Few, if any, missions add anything new to mission formulas that constantly copy games of the distant past.

If you're super hyped about crossing the virtual Thames river, climbing various famous buildings, then maybe consider it? But don't expect a polished next-gen game. The gameplay feels copy-pasted from PS2.

I would give 4/10 but the game has virtual Darwin and virtual Karl Marx in virtual London. It's kind of amusing like that, occasionally.

This entry into the long running assassin's creed series adds nothing new and several of its gameplay features and mechanics are starting to show their age. I've played every game to date apart from rogue but found this one a bit of a chore. I'll start with the cons.

    Cons -

    1. The controls are quite temperamental, in particular the climbing mechanics. You will at several points find yourself climbing the wrong wall, moving the wrong way or struggling to move at all. This is something that's always been a problem though throughout the series.
    2. The controls have been altered slightly, you need to hold r2 and O when you want to move forward and down and r2 and X when you want to move forward and up. This took quite a lot of getting used to.
    3. Graphically this game seems to be a step down. Unity blew me away with its visuals but this game is less detailed and environments lack character.
    4. The city is London this time and that means more grey skys, brown buildings and lots of chimneys. Personally the setting doesn't compare to Paris or The Caribbean.
    5. The new grappling hook isn't user friendly. It's not clear where and when it can be activated. It's also very slow. Developers have spaced buildings further apart and made them less easy to climb as well so you're forced to rely on it.
    6. Missions require much less stealth this time around. Unity was more required a greater deal of thought in its missions in my opinion.
    7. The story is quite dull, this is particularly true of the villain who just tries very hard to come across as psychotic.
    8. The combat isn't aging well. The counters, break defenses and repetitive attack animations make it feel quite dull. Other games like Batman and Shadow of Mordor are simply much better at climbing, combat, grappling and level design.
    9. It can be buggy at times. Some bugs prevented the completion of missions which was very annoying.
    10. The load times are crazy long. This make dieing incredibly frustrating.

    Pros +

    1. It's quite fun and there's a lot of content
    2. There's almost zero eavesdropping missions this time which is nice.
    3. The story is dull but the good thing is that the modern day storyline which has been consistently awful is very much in the background this time.
    4. The introduction of carriages is quite fun. Ramming others off the road and zipping around the city is a nice touch.
    5. The skill tree and ability to develop two characters in different areas (strength or stealth) worked well.

So, overall it's not a bad game and i enjoyed it but there are better games. The series really needs to improve its gameplay because it is falling behind. It's worth playing but only if you can get it really cheap (like 10 dollars) or don't have anything else to play.

In a game where parkour around the rooftop is a major component of the gameplay, I think both new features feels out of place. Using the zip line and the carriage is the fastest way to move around London. Which is unfortunate because the parkour in this game is the best of all AC games. This game is a huge disappointment for me. The original Assassin Creed is one of my favorite game, because back in 2007 the game was innovative. Huge open world map with the ability to climb everywhere was new in the gaming world. However, as the years passed the same game is released every year without any major improvements.

The gameplay is reasonably fun. The combat system is faster and much more responsive, however some may consider it too easy. Nevertheless, it's an improvement. The parkour is almost exactly the same as last year (I personally on't mind this), with the main addition being the rope launcher. I believe this makes parkour flow more however if you don't like this idea it is optional. The stealth is more responsive and fun then Unity's, however it does have it's fair share of inconsistencies and annoyances. The customization allows for a lot of creativity, but is a slight downgrade from last year. A few bugs but not to many.

The graphics are great. The close ups and long distance shots from he game can sometimes be beautiful. The game doesn't lag in the slightest on this console. Ubisoft did an amazing job of recreating Victorian London.

The story is okay, at best. My main problem is that it lacks a bit of depth, but nevertheless it isn't a complete flop. The characters are reasonably well written, they each have their own personalities and differences, especially considering we are playing with two characters now. But be warned, the ending is pretty anti-climatic.

Overall a decent game, a massive improvement from last year, but not perfect.

This is the second AC game I've played through to completion, and unfortunately it has not lived up to the heights of Black Flag. I have little interest in the series unless the setting excites me, and as with the "pirate" theme of AC IV, I was eager to explore the streets of Victorian London. The story is as banal as it has ever been in an AC game, but at least the characters were a little bit more diverse. Had they not included the option to play through the game as Evie I don't believe I would have been able to finish this installment, as Jacob is as boring and cliche as they come. Where this game saves some face is in the presentation of the setting. The visuals are stunning, and the locations spectacular. The World War 1 side mission was enjoyable for as long as it lasted, and was certainly the highlight of this game. However, my main gripe with this game is in the mechanics. New mechanics introduced to the game all worked as expected, but the core mechanic, the parkour the series is marketed on, seems to be devolving rather than evolving from game to game. Animations are buggy and interaction with the environment is terribly mapped. The movement which should feel fluid and fast instead feels awkward and unnatural. Ultimately the grandeur of the game's setting, and avoiding a repeat of the disaster that was unity saved this game from a dismal score. With Black Flag I was eager to play the game every chance I got, and once I completed it I longed for more. With Syndicate my only motivation to complete the game was for the relatively easy Plat trophy. Once that goal was met, I was happy to put the game away and never play it again. Expand

This game is one of the better AC games in recent times but it is still a long way of any of the Ezio trilogy games or black flag. Its still pretty fun though and having two characters made the game-play feel refreshing.

Many of this game's core missions, and many of its optional missions too, are quite fun and satisfying. However, there is simply way too much open world bloat - there are like, seven types of collectibles, and none of them are particularly interesting.

The best thing about this game is the story. The chemistry between the characters is organic and doesn't feel forced like it did in previous games. The story is a bit generic but the gameplay is familiar yet polished with new mechanics in play. The game is short but sweet.
Very nice to see another female protagonist in an AC game.
Easily one of the best games of the year.

I've completed first missions and i can tell - this game not dedicated for hardcore players. Too easy, really:
without any preview of this game i run through first two levels without death. No falls, no kills, enemy can't stop, with small skill in MK (for example) you can win many hand-to-hand battles without any gadget.
Graphics amazing, good anymations, not bad gameplay, but this game

It's a fun game, but it's basically more of the same from the AC franchise. The main story isn't really engaging at all, although the side missions are a bit more flushed out than they have been in previous installments. If you like the AC franchise, you will likely get entertainment value out of this, but it certainly won't make you fall in love with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was the first AC game I truly enjoyed and actually finished. The gameplay was fun, albeit a bit repetitive the more you played. Once you levelled up enough it also became quite easy, again still fun.
Unlike AC Unity, I encountered no issues whatsoever with Syndicate.

You play as two characters, a brother and sister who are both equally enjoyable to play as, even though the sister has a cool chameleon ability you can eventually get.

My biggest gripe comes with working with Karl Marx, in particular the mission "protect Marx". I failed it the first few times I tried it, simply because I sat by and watched him be killed. As a staunch anti-marxist and anti-communist I struggled with the thought of saving him.

Since I picked this up on sale for $30CDN with all the DLCs and extras I believe it is well worth the money. I look forward to playing the DLCs soon.

Quite solid entry for the series, exploring this London of the nineteenth century is absolutely amazing, I feel the graphics are great, they are just beautiful. On the other hand, while mechanics are not bad, battles are just button mashing (and there are very few types of enemies as well), and missions are extremely repetitive.

All in all, while the game is not by any means a top game

What has happened here ? I have played all the A.C. games and some of them are great, most notably Black Flag and AC 3.

Combat is another issue. It seems to be designed for an 8 year old button basher and quickly gets tiring.
The main character of Jacob is an absolute moron but his twin Evie is a slightly more interesting prospect.
Ubisoft seems to be slipping back into old ways of releasing unfinished and ill thought out games with little imagination and flair.
Avoid this game. It's as huge disappointment compared to Black Flag and AC3.

Jacob and Evie are fully realized characters with a story that makes you grow genuinely attached to them and effort towards bettering their outcome. The art, direction, writing, voice acting, and cinematography, as well as the character-specific choreographed fight styles entices you to play more. The rope launcher pretty much fixes parkour, as does the "parkour down" ability. The missions are carefully selected and build to important assassinations, as they should. The modern day is a bit disjointed and lacking, but it actually moves the meta-plot football along if you have been following that portion of the story. They have set the stage for what could be a very interesting modern day franchise title in coming years.

The World War I rift is gorgeous and inventive, and makes excellent use of game mechanics by adding in touches of "Rogue" game play, and the other side activities such as "Child Liberation" and "Investigations" are fun and interesting. Fighting is still quite simple, but that's not really what this game is about. If you play the game with the understanding that the "Optional Objectives" are the "correct" way to complete a mission, you will have a blast. Stated another way: Many situations lend to cheesing by abusing game mechanics or fighting through masses of enemies, but if you play as if you were an assassin who is not Neo from the Matrix, you will have a lot more fun.

The story of this era of London is told through more than just the missions, so it is key to read. Evie's notebook, the animus database, and even the NPC chatter in the streets all tell a more complex and 3-dimensional story than if you were to simply play through as quickly as possible.

I have to place this title in a tie with Assassins Creed Black Flag/Rogue for gameplay, and place it as Number One for telling a more nuanced and subtle story of a sibling relationship set at a time when the world was changing faster than anyone could quite grasp.

Nothing new in graphics, repetitive and annoying sound (I had to mute it when no dialogs) It is the worst story of all Assassin's Creed. Like in previous Assassin's Creed released last year: bugs and more bugs.
If you get it for free, then it worth the price.

Another Assassin’s Creed game that you can either buy or ignore sight unseen depending on whether you grew tired of the old formula. Some innovations (e.g. the grappling hook) are a welcome addition, some (like two playable characters and their development system) feel forced and not really thought through. The brightest aspect of Syndicate is London, which might be the most spectacular city in the series. [13/2015, p.42]
