Another year, another Assassin's Creed. This year the series takes us to another dazzling historical setting like the Victorian times, the London of the Industrial Revolution. But although the story of the twins, Jacob and Eve, has better elements than last year's Unity, it reinforces the fact that the whole series needs at least a year of two of rest and gathering new ideas. Yes, we have a grapple like Batman, and even horse vehicles, a great background scenario, a town to control and gangs of crooks to lead, along with the usual array of side-quests. But there plenty of elements that, if allowed time to polish, would have made Syndicate as big, fun and entertaining as others like AC II or Black Flag.

At the end of the day, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is a fantastic game trapped inside an archaic one.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate gets more right than it gets wrong, but in trying to amend some of the sins of the series, it exacerbates the issues instead of offering a cure. Despite that rather lengthy list of cons at the bottom of my review, one thing’s for sure: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is still a hell of a lot of fun.

Another Assassin’s Creed game that you can either buy or ignore sight unseen depending on whether you grew tired of the old formula. Some innovations (e.g. the grappling hook) are a welcome addition, some (like two playable characters and their development system) feel forced and not really thought through. The brightest aspect of Syndicate is London, which might be the most spectacular city in the series. [13/2015, p.42]

Fans of the series will appreciate it for what it is, but Syndicate doesn't repair all of Unity's damage. [Christmas 2015, p.72]

But overall, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is a very difficult game to dislike. It was never intended to break the mould, it’s no kind of reinvention and it probably won’t win the series many new fans. It is resolutely more of the same, but robust and varied with it.

Uninspired story and incredibly simple gameplay keeps this years Assassin’s Creed from being what it could have been.

In conclusion Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is an amazing standalone game packed with fun things to do from beginning to end. However a weak, badly paced story, and two uninspired protagonists hold it back from being a great Assassin’s Creed.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is actually good.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is an uneven game. Victorian London is great, there's some well executed evolution (running around, jumping and using stealth is getting better and better) but there's still some very stupid AI and tiring combat. Syndicate has some excellent missions proving that this type of gameplay can be exciting but unfortunately they are in minority. What's more - the story is weak, and the final battle is horrendous.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate lets you science the shit out of murder in a city where people are sciencing the shit out of everything. There's an undeniable appeal to that. But it’s an appeal worth looking in the face.

Syndicate comes off as another Assassin’s Creed game with a handful of improvements. London is beautiful if a bit laborious to travel around, and the missions are repetitive, but this doesn’t make Syndicate bad by any stretch of the imagination. It’s still a good game, it just hasn’t made a significant step up over the previous instalment.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate has an interesting setting, iconic characters and solid gameplay. It is, however, not the game that it could’ve been, due to a missing wow factor and some unfortunate glitches.

A series that, for all its wanderlust, is never truly going anywhere. [Christmas 2015, p.112]

There’s little “dark” and “brooding” to this game, not with Jacob and Evie’s back and forth, and a more playful tone to the music, and Jacob running about and recruiting Rooks to help in missions. In this way, Assassin’s Creed is revitalized.

Through a stunning revival of Victorian London, but also a damaged A.I. and stripped down gameplay mechanisms, Syndicate denies its Assassin’s Creed legacy and adds a boring chapter that just has to be played to move to the next one. No back story, no characters, no plot whatsoever. Unity failed to bring the series back to its trail, but at least tried. Syndicate doesn’t even bother.

With its superb reproduction of 19th century London, Assassin's Creed Syndicate is again a nice time travel machine. Still it feels like a new skin for Assassin's Creed Unity, but it is actually not as good as its elder brother. The game's missions lack originality and variety, the excellent online coop mode just disappeared... This fantastic franchise really needs a boost next time.

It's apparent that Ubisoft has been listening to the criticism that's been levied at them over the years about the Assassin's Creed series. This is the closest we've gotten to the one-two punch that was Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood, with a much leaner story and mission structure than before. However, the game lacks a certain uniqueness beyond being just another Assassin's Creed game, which is a shame considering this could have been so much more.

To this day, I call Assassin’s Creed II my favorite video game of the past generation. It was truly a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the Assassin’s Creed series has become a shell of its former self. Syndicate tries hard to recreate some of the magic, and even creates some smart new features, but it ultimately falls short.

Sure, this isn’t the broken mess that Assassin’s Creed Unity was, but in some ways it’s more of a blemish than its predecessor. After all, this is a functional game that simply isn’t all that fun to play, which is far more damning than any technical glitch could ever be.

The core gameplay loop is solid and it's built upon a sound structure, but familiarity and filler lessen the appeal of this open world outing. Vastly improved performance and all around impressive presentation mean that London's most definitely not burning – but there may be a little panic in the offices at Ubisoft.

Another impressive open world environment is wasted on dull, joyless gameplay and repetitive missions, making Syndicate as banal and artless as Assassin’s Creed has ever been.

It constantly rips you out of the experience, whether that be from frustration at the mechanics or outright bugginess. You'll want to forgive it its flaws because it does Victorian London so well, something you just can't get elsewhere. But leave it a few minutes and it reveals itself to be as utterly flawed as its forebears, a beautiful facade on a rotting core.

Syndicate is a step in the right direction for the series. It’s not as innovative as it could be, but it’s an entertaining adventure worthy of the name Assassin’s Creed. Buy it.
  2. Dec 8, 2015
The best parts of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate are the things it does differently from other entries in the series, and its greatest frustrations are what it has in common with them. The series’ heroes have been fighting the same battle against the same enemy for countless generations without success partly because they’ve always got one foot in the past. If Assassin’s Creed never changes, it’ll stay as stuck as its own stars.

Massive, Massive improvement over that crapfest that was Unity. The characters are well written, familiar gameplay mechanics such as theMassive, Massive improvement over that crapfest that was Unity. The characters are well written, familiar gameplay mechanics such as the whistling and being able to pick up bodies is back, the story has clever links to the story of the other AC games, the modern day is better and actually goes somewhere (albeit the ending is absolute wank) and the side missions are implemented well into the goal of the main story. Yes,
I got this game early (Wednesday) and the biggest criticism I can have of it is that It just doesn't make you want to play it

Yes, Assassins Creed has been similar for years now but I've always enjoyed them, this time I just feel like there haven't been many improvements in the places that matter.

The city, while very accurate to Victorian London is, in my opinion, extremely boring. Lots of Grey, Brown & Black. I understand this was what it was like in that era but I personally just don't enjoy it. The graphics are not a massive improvement on Unity

The grappling hook is a massive problem for me, it is basically a copy of the hook from Batman Arkham Knight, thus eliminating all the old 'climbing puzzles' from the older games. You just zipline from A to B (not always accurately I might add) so gone are the days of parkour across roofs etc.

The characters are very well written, especially Evie and are probably the most enjoyable aspect of the game so far.

As someone who has played every game, usually ending between 90-100% completion on them all, this just doesn't seem like one which I will put the effort into doing this with.
