Oct 13, 2014Alien: Isolation desperately tries to give us something fearsome and memorable. But the inconsistent approach leads to periods of tedium thankfully interrupted by flashes of unmitigated terror. If you can revel in the highs and forge through the lows, you should emerge satisfied. If, on the other hand, you’re more sensitive to design, control and mechanical issues, you’ll be a bit harsher on the game.

Oct 26, 2014I don't want that to deter anyone from playing Isolation—truth be told, I think it's one of the year's must-play releases for those with as much adoration for the original Alien film as I have.

Oct 14, 2014When the game works, it is head and shoulders above any other title that uses the license. When it fails, however, it descends into frustration and tedium.
-
Oct 6, 2014Alien: Isolation is a nice try in being the long-awaited game that Alien saga fans have been clamoring for. However, the lack of rhythm, technical issues and repetitive mechanics weigh down a game that didn't know how to materialize what was a great idea at its core.
-
Oct 6, 2014Padding is Alien: Isolation’s unfortunate undoing, as there are a few too many recycled moments throughout the course of its seemingly never-ending single player campaign. Still, when it’s on form, this is a nail biting affair, as you use sound and cunningly constructed items in order outwit your incredibly intelligent enemies.
-
Oct 3, 2014Pacing problems and a lack of variety take their toll, but in its best most moments this is the most successful big budget survival horror in a decade.
-
Oct 7, 2014The game takes about 15 hours to complete, but more than half of that time is spent wandering around and waiting for something to happen.
-
Oct 8, 2014Perhaps fearing their game would be too short, development studio The Creative Assembly have artificially stretched Alien: Isolation’s length far beyond necessity or logic. From the endless backtracking to and fro across the Sevastopol to alien-free sections that have Amanda dealing with difficult-to-kill rogue androids, the game’s pace ebbs too low too often.
-
Oct 3, 2014This is four hours' worth of a great idea stretched into 14-plus hours of messy stealth gameplay, creaky video game cliches, and limp exploration.
-
Oct 3, 2014It’s a shame that Isolation doesn’t track stats, because I’d be curious to know how many of its roughly 15-20 hours I spent hiding in lockers, staring at the motion tracker, and, most of all, how many hundreds (yes, hundreds) of times I died without a chance to save myself.
