This game is better than you would expect if you are not a fan of the other games. The controls are perfect, the graphics are quite good, and the campaign is better than other cod games. Great addition to the Call of Duty franchise. The balance to the multiplayer is perfect. There are no weapons or perks that I feel are overpowered. Rewards you for capturing objectives and not just camping. Matchmaking is fast.

Modern Warfare 3 brings a new level of action and fun, sure, it follows the same formula from last years Call of Dutys, but this is what CoD is about: Shoot enemies and having fun. Multiplayer is as epic and ridiculously addictive as you would expect, certainly blowing away the competition from another certain game that came out recently which I will leave unnamed. They added so many things to the game, most of it being nuance. This is still Call of Duty, but it's the most well done game in series history. The maps are very well done. I love them, but they will naturally take some time to get used to. Spec Ops is improved over the last game. Adding Survival mode was a smart move and is a lot of fun!

Overall great game that will make you sink a lot of time into it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good single player campaign and good multiplayer fun. Great fun rejoining Frost, Price and friends and playing as Yuri the possibly questionable Russian is a nice addition. Mulitplayer will take some getting used to after Black Ops, which is overall probably a better effort (go Treyarch), but looks this is the kind of game I want to find out more about. Say what you like about expectations and glitches, its still MW and its great being part of something that effects so many gamers. If you enjoy slightly unrealistic fast paced shooters and dont take things too seriously you will probably enjoy this. Nice work Infinity Ward. Expand

First and foremost, trolls need no reason to hate, may of them have probably never even played a COD game, they just see an opportunity to catch the "Hate everything express" and jump aboard tickets ready. So many disgruntled people expecting something different, something not COD. Really? Did you really think they would change the formula? It's not a new series of games, it's MODERN WARFARE 3. A continuation. It is what it is, it's the game Jerry Bruckheimer would be proud to have his name attached to. Look, it runs perfectly out of the box, you can play it on a laptop 3 years old or a top of the range pc. You can play it on 2 consoles that are approaching the end of their cycle perfectly. It has over the top voice acting, far fetched battle scenes and unrealistic combat. That's what COD is all bout. The comparisons to BF3 are boring and pointless. They both attack the Battle scenario completely different. Battlefield is what it is, a "battlefield". Tanks, planes, helicopter's, they haven't changed the formula since the first one. They are trying to push the technology but just read pc forums and see the problems people are having with it. GFX card companies struggling to get updated drivers out in order for you to achieve decent FPS. People with high end pc rigs having to enter BIOS and disable Hyper Threading to stop stuttering. That doesn't happen with the COD games, you hit play and it just runs. I bought them both and love them both but this constant comparison is just silly and and people hating because it's "More of the same" is equally as silly. After all, how far can they take the combat scenario? You want realism join the army. If you like COD games, just get it. What surprises me is reading the various forum postings about this title on quite a few sites, a surprising number of people pirated this title and STILL moan about it. Unbelievable. To sum up. Most of the posts on here are compete crap. Expand

For that reason it loses 1 point, Survival Mode is also limited to 2 players, which given the fact it was tagged as being the new Zombies I thought was pretty lame - for that reason it loses another point! The simple fact is that yes, it is kinda similar to MW2 - ok then, very similar! But to be honest, that doesn't bother me!! I really enjoyed the storyline, the graphics were good, I like the new survival concept and the missions, I like the new strike package options with support, assault and specialist... All in all its perfectly fine for what it is, and it is what it was supposed to be! A fps where you shoot everything that moves in the campaign before going online to complain to your friends about how many drop shotters, quick scopers and campers there are (something that is not the fault of IF). The issue with all these negative reviews is the player - not the game! You cannot order a CoD game that follows the CoD format and then complain about it - what were you expecting?? It delivers a nice conclusion in campaign and the online play is good fun, but if you still aren't convinced, rent it and then decide! Expand

I gave it a 9 because of some kind of communication issues with the bluetooth headsets. While in a game, talking with friends sometimes crackles a lot or just hard to communicate in general. When in the party chat room, seems to be fine. Something an easy update can fix.

I do not understand where you would get such a score from, perhaps all of you are just die hard Battlefield fans that are trying to degrade Call of Duty, or you are just angry at the fact that you can't get more than ten kills in a given match? I have been playing Call of Duty since 2007 (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is one of the best in the series. I say one of the best because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 probably has the slight edge being that most of its features are the basis of MW3 but to consider MW3 to be an expensive DLC for MW2 is completely nuts, because MW3 offers a ton of new content and features. Spec Ops Survival Mode is really good and online multiplayer has been improved. In my opinion and in the opinion of many others, MW2 was one of the best multiplayer games ever made, and by sticking to this winning formula MW3 will prove to be a huge success as well. With the addition of new killstreaks (Osprey, Juggernaut Suit, Overwatch Helicopter, etc.), the integration of a completely new killstreak rewards system, ability to upgrade and level up your weapons, and the addition of completely new weapons, multiplayer has never been so addicting. The graphics are the same as MW2 for the most part, although the maps appear to have more detail to them. The majority of maps take place in urban enivironments that provide a lot of cover and distractions compared to the MW2 maps where the majority took place in vast, open areas (reason why so many people camped in MW2). The maps in MW3 seem to be larger than the maps in Black Ops, but smaller than the maps in MW2. The maps are pretty good and if you are a Call of Duty Elite member you will be receiving many more additional maps over the course of the year. Overall this game is very solid and is a must have for anyone that enjoys playing online multiplayer games. The only drawbacks of the game are that the campaign lacks depth, the servers for online multiplayer are having issues currently (the Hot Fix system developed for Black Ops will solve this issue very soon with an update), and I would have liked to see a couple of large open maps such as the ones in MW2 just to mix it up a bit. I have to give MW3 a 10/10. MW3 integrates the best features of Black Ops with MW2 to bring you the best Call of Duty yet. Expand

Now, look at what made Half-Life 2 game of the decade, it did not really introduce anything new, but it fixed what was wrong with Half-Life. Half-Life's expansions added what was new, Half-Life 2 fixed everything that was wrong.

That was the issue with Modern Warfare 2, while Call of Duty 4 set the table and its expansions added new maps with new gameplay, that is what MW2 did, it did not fix anything, but it added new stuff. Infinity Ward fixed that, they did add new modes but they knew that to stay relevant in the video game biz, they needed to fix everything up.

They did add new modes, these modes were strikingly similar to other modes, yes, but the fine line of distinctions is what made them fun to play. Now I bet you in Modern Warfare 4 (they should drop Call of Duty, because that title is now Treyarch's), they will add new graphics and they will add more distinctions between the gameplay.

Look at everything they fixed: killstreaks, gameplay, audio, servers. You see, blame their work on MW2 for what is wrong, if they did their technique for MW3 on MW2, we would have seen a far better game, but does that stop MW3 from being a good game.

I mean even if they are just fixing everything, they took the time to add new features: many new modes, many new guns and the graphics run at 60 FPS. Lets go back to modes, they will add more distinctions in the next installment of Modern Warfare. I also expect Treyarch to do this as well with their next WW2 or Cold war game. Now to guns, every gun is the same, its just how you use it. Now to graphics, this is the hardest thing to get finished and make better, I bet you if they were to match the game's graphics up to lets say Uncharted 3, the IW Engine would overload and it would take them up to November 2012 to finish the game, they will advance the graphics for the next game, don't worry, but by adding 60 FPS they did do a good job on fixing the graphics that they already had.

Don't listen to the negative reviews, actually play the game for yourself.

When you have been gaming for a few decenia like I have this is a very troubling development to observe and I hope it is one that will end soon, however I am fearful the opposite might actually be true and this is just the beginning of an actual movement of marketeers influencing kids into thinking they have but one choice when it comes to a certain type of game.

Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence.

What you guys need to realize is that you are not fighting your own battle, you are actively involved in the marketing of a product and are willfully doing the job someone normally gets paid to do. You are not living in world where you need to chose between drinks, books, games, etc. You do not live in an either/or world. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc.

It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors.
I want metacritic to reflect the opinion of people playing a game and providing me with insight into their experience again, just as it used to be. What I do not want is to read hundreds of nerd-rage fuelled marketing stooges supporting one developer or another not being aware that their fueling of the fire is actualy equivelant to putting money in their pockets.

    Stop it, now!

If you go to the cinema to watch an action film you don't complain that all you got was explosions & people shouting, it's the same for this game...

They have succeeded at every single aspect of that. The singleplayer is intense and succinct. It flows beautifully and pits the player right in the middle of some extremely entertaining action. It properly rivals the glorious singleplayer of Call of Duty 4. Spec Ops mode is absolutely enthralling, you really are in for a treat with Survival. It'll keep you hooked for hours. And the Multiplayer. It is a well known fact that Black Ops multiplayer was a poor show for a Call of Duty game. Let's just say, the multiplayer in this has brought back what we missed in Call of Duty 4. Balanced gameplay, fast paced gun-on-gun gameplay, and an absolutely entertaining and enjoyable video gaming experience. It really is everything they said it would be.

If you want me to compare this to Battlefield 3, which I also own, then all I can say is to pick what is right for you. If you like more teamplay and tactical gameplay, go for Battlefield. If you want fast-paced and intense gameplay, go for Call of Duty. I like both, so I will play both and enjoy both.

As a Call of Duty player since the series came out in 2003, I was legitimately worried that this game would fall down the same hole as Black Ops did last year. My God I was wrong, this is everything I could ask for in what is one of my favourite video game series of all time. This is not Black Ops, this is not Modern Warfare 2, and this is not Modern Warfare 1. This is Modern Warfare 3, in a league of its own. Best game in the series to date. I implore you to at least rent this game. You will enjoy it.

Then when I went to Gamefest and actually played Modern Warfare 3 along with Battlefield 3. I really enjoyed both. The gameplay is very different to the previous Modern Warfare games , its actually incredible compact and close quarters which me and my friends had to adjust to (especially considering Battlefield 3 so huge) and once you get over the very close CQC it is very intense and action packed. Snipers are reduced to a minimum, which is interesting. Sometimes the spawn points do seem bad though which is a negative (friends been spawned right into grenades or enemies).

The concept of how capturing domination points gives you a point for your killstreak, was a great idea and support killstreaks is a interesting addition and gives you quite a power to help your team and EMP is really useful finally. Also the weapon leveling is great addition and the weapon proficency is rather intriguing and kinda awesome. But giving people a point to their killstreak when capturing points is a very great idea. Now people actually bother to capture points. Many times in BLOPS and previous MW games have I been capturing and pretty much only 2 other people with me, now people actually bother to capture. Yes the engine does look dated and hopefully the will design a new engine, I dont see it selling too well if they continue to use the same engine. The knifing is really fast, and I do get annoyed with the quick stabbing (unrealistic) but it looks like its been set for everyone commando style melee which makes it balanced but its much better in BF3 how the knife works, its far too fast. Also I think the shotgun is far to lobotmized, it completely cut out at a certain range which I can see why would be done but ultimately that have gone to far with it. Especially considering in CQC fighting a shotgun is really deadly. However the gameplay is still pretty fun, and better graphics does not mean better gameplay any real gamer will tell you that. Lastly it still runs pretty well, also the Sweeping Helicopter Killstreak is incredible and awesome and one of the best ever. I do however express annoyance that delta force isnt available in Multiplayer only in Spec Ops, really love that re-enforcement. I do support Infinity Wards original members whom got the short end of the stick with activision refusing to pay royalities, which is wrong but Sledgehammer and the outer layer of Infinity Ward have certainly done a good job with Modern Warfare 3. It is completely miles better then Modern Warfare 2 and Sledgehammer and this Version of Infinity Ward show they are the right people for the job.

Online is the same as always, long, fun and progressive, but it is sort of the same as MW2 online, (except for the maps). Survivor mode is the highlight of the game for me, what is more fun than mowing down hundreds of enemies. On a map like resistance its quite a calm level where you just have fun killing people, (until wave 26 when you get like 3 juggernauts, 2 helicopters a ton of attack dogs and suicide bombers as well as the normal guys who are heavily armoured anyway). but on a map like lock down, you need to be on your toes as the enemies get harder quicker. Survivor mode is great fun and every map is great.

Special ops aren't as good as they were in MW2 but they are still good, i particularly like the stealth ones. but some missions are just a bit to hard and get annoying when you keep on dying, but still, the special are good.

Despite no massive revolutionary game engine, or no relatively new features, MW3 will draw you in more than Battlefield ever did. I am a huge fan of singleplayer modes. I have been playing COD since the second one came out and always have enjoyed the stories that INFINITY WARD told (no offense Treyarch). MW3 does such a great job, along with any other game in the modern warfare series, of producing villians you truly hate, badass comrades and friends you hate to see die. The levels are intense as always and usually always have that "OMG that was cool" element in each one. These elements are what make COD's singleplayer so much better than BF3's. I didn't care for my marine in Iran the same way i did for Soap, Price and Delta Force. Overall i felt the singleplayer was a success. Co-op is fun too. Infinity Ward and Activision have learned from Treyarch's Zombie mode, that endless waves of enemies means endless waves of fun. The new survival mode uses this mode and should provide the player with hours of entertainment. And if one gets bored, you can always jump over to the mission based modes for a even more fun. Multiplayer, will as always be the mainstay for most. While not as innovative as other games (cough BF3) it takes the core formula that changed online gaming forever and improves upon it. Regardless of what people will say, next year at this time there will still be millions playing this game everyday. Most hardcore gamers seemed to have turned away from COD but they forget that COD isn't about the hardcore gamer, its about creating a game that is easy enough that anyone can get good at it. But complex enough that one can never seem to master it. Millions will buy this game and in the end will have played it more than any other online game this year. While I myself enjoy BF3's multiplayer more, the majority of the public will play Call of Duty. Overall, I feel this game has been put down by so many for so long that it isn't getting the attention it deserves. Infinity Ward has worked hard and long to create this series, they deserve the credit for the great work they have done over the years. Now we will live in a Treyarch COD world. Looking back people will look favorably on this game. A praise it deserves. Expand

The multiplayer has been refined to the limit. All the people complaining about new features need to grow up. Just because this game doesn't feature new pro-pro-pro perks and is fair and that you are now forced to run around and leave your lonely corner. Just because you cant shoot people in 2 bullets and because your were amazing at a game that was unbalanced, and you suck now, means you need to adapt.

Besides my rant on the ranters, I would like to point out that the new Survival mode is a TREAT. It needs refinement in the future, but it is a terrific start to an amazing mode. It definitely challenges Zombies mode, and in my opinion beats it in terms of fun.

Lets face it. Waves are better than rounds.

Modern Warfare 3 has an unbelievable multiplayer, Spec-Ops, and Survival mode. Campaign is weak, but is a great addition.

In the past, we used to buy games for a decent multiplayer. Now, I buy Call of Duty for a great multiplayer and a decent campaign.

Everything about the game is fun and rewarding, and no other franchise has search and destroy, so solid game in my book

The Campaign continues the story of Soap, Price, and Makarov from Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2. It's a pretty good finale for the last Modern Warfare and I, personally, thoroughly enjoyed Blood Brothers and the flashbacks from the previous two games. The Multiplayer is okay. The spawn points are horrible and the players are just as bad as ever, but the new game mode Kill Confirmed is surprisingly good. There only seems to be one over-powered thing in the Multiplayer, Assassin Pro. The Spec-Ops Missions are more for people who want more of the Campaign but the Survival version of Spec-Ops is wonderful. It could be better with the inclusion of Akimbo attachments to Handguns and Machine Pistols, more of a perk selection, and 4 player co-op instead of just 2. Overall it's decent for an FPS and good for a Call of Duty. Rent it if you're an FPS fan and get it if you're a Call of Duty fan, whether or not you have the previous Modern Warfare games, it's still good. 8.5/10 Expand

There are several moments, especially one, if you have played all three games where you will be shocked and saddened. A fitting end to a fine story. The multiplayer is however the main reason to jump on any COD game. I swear it's the only time I still talk to some of my college friends. The new features, especially the support kill streak addition, makes the game much more accessable to main stream gamers like myself. The maps are fluid and fun. And the competition is top notch. There are some buggy issues with setting up matches but pretty much all games launch with bugs like that these days. They will be patched in time and the experience will get even better. With that being said, MW3 is a fitting sequel to the last outing by Infinity Ward. Single player is as frantic and cinematic as ever. I felt like I was playing through a Michael Bay movie. Of course, if you are expecting something more Oscar-worthy, you obviously don't know the franchise very well. Overall, it was a lot of fun. The spec ops mode of MW2 has returned with some enhancements. Eat your heart out Zombies, because IW has conjured up the fun with survival mode. It's a wholly different experience when the enemies can shoot back. Multiplayer has a lot more depth with the addition of 2 new game modes, Kill Confirmed and Team Defender. The weapon leveling system is a nice touch, too. The matchmaking servers are still just as problematic as ever, although I'm not getting a lot of lag once I'm in a match. Most of the issue is with getting into the match to begin with. I've also had problems with getting separated when I'm playing online in a party with friends. Graphically, MW3 looks so much better than Black Ops. I didn't realize how much I missed the weather effects until I played through a rain storm on one of the maps. I won't say this is the prettiest game ever, but I did feel immersed in the game environment than with the last Call of Duty. For those who are complaining that IW is using the same engine from MW2 with no improvements, I have to disagree. These developers are obviously learning more about getting more out of the same game engine. Many game makers use the same game engine for multiple outings. It's like saying that the graphics can't have improved because it's still the same ol' PS3. I'm really enjoying Modern Warfare 3 and I can't wait to see what IW comes up with for DLC. Expand

This hasn't hurt CoD in the slightest, and MW3 is going to be a huge hit. And it deserves to. Sure, battlefield 3 is prettier, but it comes nowhere close to the pure FPS mastery that makes CoD such a juggernaut. The campaign far surpasses the vaguely interesting BF3 campaign and, thankfully, blows the stupid and confusing MW2 campaign out of the water, surpassing the surprisingly strong Black Ops to fall, imo, just short of the first Modern Warfare and Bioshock as the best FPS i've played. The scale is bigger, and while that's not always better, MW3 thankfully avoids a michael bay feel while still having over-the-top set pieces around the globe in the throes of WWIII. But nobody gives two **** about single player except for me, so multiplayer: its pretty **** good. they've made some changes, and while it doesn't seem to be enough for many people, i really don't see much point in ignoring what's widely considered to be one of the best multiplayer experiences ever and trying to reinvent the wheel for the sequel. spec ops, which i've just barely played, is also a ton of fun. Bottom line: haters gonna hate. But MW3, even with all the hype surrounding it, is a fantastic game and completely worth the money. Yes, it runs on an old engine. Yes, the multiplayer feels very similar to MW2. But if you can get over these two flaws (and one of them isn't really even a flaw, seeing as people still play MW2's multiplayer today), then you will be rewarded with a very, very good game. Expand

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class.
