  • Summary: Unto The End is a challenging combat adventure game in the style of a cinematic platformer. The story is simple: get home to your family. Master read-react combat in intense sword fights. Spot opportunities to trade and use items. An adventure told through your actions, how will you make it home?

Unto the End is a scenic, lonely 2D side-scroller that sets its primary focus on a fixed number of intense battles with its unique combat system that is difficult to learn, but satisfying to master. There is no hand-holding here, though sometimes you might wish there was.

Though it's a small package, Unto the End manages to deliver both an amazing visual experience and surprisingly deep combat systems. You won't want to miss the sort of adventure that will keep you coming back for more punishment, death after death.

While the sound design is gripping, the platforming is solid, and the puzzle solving is unique, Unto The End unfortunately suffers from a bloated combat system and harsh checkpoints.

Unto the End is a minimalistic, very intense and ultimately exhausting adventure that requires patience. Enemies are always faster than our sluggish hero and almost always unpredictable, so even a lone foe can pose a challenge, while a stronger one will kill you with one strike. Not all encounters seemed fair, by the way. [03/2021, p.45]

Unto the End just wants to punish the player. It feels like it went too far off the deep end of “purposefully difficult game” and ended up in kaizo territory. The challenge here isn’t fun, it’s just annoying.

Even with clear intentions and a striking presentation, Unto the End's borderline broken combat mechanics drag the experience down into a spiral of misery.

  1. I’d say “I’m sorry, Unto”, but I’m really not sorry because I hate this sluggish, clumsy little arsehole and I wish he’d stayed dead the first time. Some of you will like him (and it’s worth giving it a go via Game Pass to see if you do). But that’s your problem now.

The atmosphere is on point, the sound is perfect, and the visuals ideal. The combat is extremely well designed too, way better than it first appears. The game won't hold your hand on direction or puzzle solving, but it does offer a basic combat tutorial at the beginning - but make no mistake, there's more to the combat than what you learn in the tutorial, particularly with some really great nuance in enemy AI behavior.

I played this through many times to see the secret endings. However, if you have no patience, are bad at puzzles, and can't be bothered learning combat mechanics, and if you don't want your inability to rise to a challenge to be exposed, then this game probably won't be for you. On the other hand, if you're up for a real challenge, and if you like a dark and atmospheric setting with a few secrets to find, then maybe your quest to learn the game and ultimately find the secret ending in Unto the End should begin.

The mood, gameplay, sound design and the visual storytelling are well made. But the game falls short on longevity and replayability.

In this case more would have been better and much needed. When the game ended I felt very underwhelmed.
It had the potential to be something great but it feels more like an unfinished product that ends in the first act.

While there are probably worse games out there, I haven't played any of them. Unto The End feels like that failed 10 years ago on Newgrounds.

Unto The End reminds me of Capybara's Below, another very punishing game. Below's problem was that although it was very pretty and interesting, it was more punishing than it was pretty or interesting, and so it didn't quite work. Here we have a game that is twice as punishing and not at all pretty or interesting. Little wonder it doesn't work at all. Expand
