Everything that you do in this game feels like it takes way longer that it should, heck, even dying, and respawning takes a couple of more seconds than it should in my opinion.

My guess is that the game looked up to games like the classic Prince of Persia games as a "model" for their game, so every single one of the actions, such as even opening your inventory takes a while, you have to

It makes the whole game feel like a slog to play, there's a reason as to why games stop using rotoscoping.

I kept playing to see if something interesting or engaging would happen, but sadly, it didn't.

Unto The End sets a high bar for itself right at the start. "This game is different," it says. This proves to be a tragically sad statement from a development team that doesn't realize that their game is a boring, bog-standard retread of sidescrolling swordplay that's been done much better a hundred times over. But that's the kind of game that Unto The End is. It thinks it's the first game to come up with a parry mechanic. It thinks Dark Souls would have been better in 2D, and without any of that bothersome atmosphere, enemy variety, polished combat, or world design. Make no mistake - this game is punishing, but in an extremely repetitive and uninteresting way. I really, really wanted to play the game that Unto The End thinks it is. Sadly, that game doesn't exist and the game that does exist kind of completely sucks. Expand

Newsflash: If your game is going to be VERY difficult, it should at least be a LITTLE enjoyable. Unto The End reminds me of Capybara's Below, another very punishing game. While there are probably worse games out there, I haven't played any of them. Unto The End feels like that failed 10 years ago on Newgrounds.

The mood, gameplay, sound design and the visual storytelling are well made. But the game falls short on longevity and replayability.
In this case more would have been better and much needed. When the game ended I felt very underwhelmed.
It had the potential to be something great but it feels more like an unfinished product that ends in the first act.

Unto the End is a minimalistic, very intense and ultimately exhausting adventure that requires patience. Enemies are always faster than our sluggish hero and almost always unpredictable, so even a lone foe can pose a challenge, while a stronger one will kill you with one strike. Not all encounters seemed fair, by the way. [03/2021, p.45]

Unto the End is a scenic, lonely 2D side-scroller that sets its primary focus on a fixed number of intense battles with its unique combat system that is difficult to learn, but satisfying to master. There is no hand-holding here, though sometimes you might wish there was.

Unto the End just wants to punish the player. It feels like it went too far off the deep end of “purposefully difficult game” and ended up in kaizo territory. The challenge here isn’t fun, it’s just annoying.
