I love this game. The atmosphere is on point, the sound is perfect, and the visuals ideal. The combat is extremely well designed too, way better than it first appears. The game won't hold your hand on direction or puzzle solving, but it does offer a basic combat tutorial at the beginning - but make no mistake, there's more to the combat than what you learn in the tutorial, particularlyI love this game. I played this through many times to see the secret endings. However, if you have no patience, are bad at puzzles, and can't be bothered learning combat mechanics, and if you don't want your inability to rise to a challenge to be exposed, then this game probably won't be for you. On the other hand, if you're up for a real challenge, and if you like a dark and atmospheric setting with a few secrets to find, then maybe your quest to learn the game and ultimately find the secret ending in Unto the End should begin.

Unto the End is a minimalistic, very intense and ultimately exhausting adventure that requires patience. Enemies are always faster than our sluggish hero and almost always unpredictable, so even a lone foe can pose a challenge, while a stronger one will kill you with one strike. Not all encounters seemed fair, by the way. [03/2021, p.45]

Unto the End is a scenic, lonely 2D side-scroller that sets its primary focus on a fixed number of intense battles with its unique combat system that is difficult to learn, but satisfying to master. There is no hand-holding here, though sometimes you might wish there was.

Unto the End just wants to punish the player. It feels like it went too far off the deep end of “purposefully difficult game” and ended up in kaizo territory. The challenge here isn’t fun, it’s just annoying.
