Unto the End is a scenic, lonely 2D side-scroller that sets its primary focus on a fixed number of intense battles with its unique combat system that is difficult to learn, but satisfying to master. There is no hand-holding here, though sometimes you might wish there was.

Though it's a small package, Unto the End manages to deliver both an amazing visual experience and surprisingly deep combat systems. You won't want to miss the sort of adventure that will keep you coming back for more punishment, death after death.

Unto the End is a minimalistic, very intense and ultimately exhausting adventure that requires patience. Enemies are always faster than our sluggish hero and almost always unpredictable, so even a lone foe can pose a challenge, while a stronger one will kill you with one strike. Not all encounters seemed fair, by the way. [03/2021, p.45]

While the sound design is gripping, the platforming is solid, and the puzzle solving is unique, Unto The End unfortunately suffers from a bloated combat system and harsh checkpoints.

Unto the End just wants to punish the player. It feels like it went too far off the deep end of “purposefully difficult game” and ended up in kaizo territory. The challenge here isn’t fun, it’s just annoying.

Even with clear intentions and a striking presentation, Unto the End's borderline broken combat mechanics drag the experience down into a spiral of misery.

  1. I’d say “I’m sorry, Unto”, but I’m really not sorry because I hate this sluggish, clumsy little arsehole and I wish he’d stayed dead the first time. Some of you will like him (and it’s worth giving it a go via Game Pass to see if you do). But that’s your problem now.

My guess is that the game looked up to games like the classic Prince of Persia games as a "model" for their game, so every single one of the actions, such as even opening your inventory takes a while, you have to wait for the animations to end before you continue playing, etc...

It makes the whole game feel like a slog to play, there's a reason as to why games stop using rotoscoping.

I kept playing to see if something interesting or engaging would happen, but sadly, it didn't.

Unto The End reminds me of Capybara's Below, another very punishing game. Below's problem was that although it was very pretty and interesting, it was more punishing than it was pretty or interesting, and so it didn't quite work. Here we have a game that is twice as punishing and not at all pretty or interesting. Little wonder it doesn't work at all. Full Review »

While there are probably worse games out there, I haven't played any of them. Unto The End feels like that failed 10 years ago on Newgrounds.
