Everything that you do in this game feels like it takes way longer that it should, heck, even dying, and respawning takes a couple of more seconds than it should in my opinion.

My guess is that the game looked up to games like the classic Prince of Persia games as a "model" for their game, so every single one of the actions, such as even opening your inventory takes a while, you have to

It makes the whole game feel like a slog to play, there's a reason as to why games stop using rotoscoping.

I kept playing to see if something interesting or engaging would happen, but sadly, it didn't.

Unto The End sets a high bar for itself right at the start. "This game is different," it says. This proves to be a tragically sad statement from a development team that doesn't realize that their game is a boring, bog-standard retread of sidescrolling swordplay that's been done much better a hundred times over. But that's the kind of game that Unto The End is. It thinks it's the first game to come up with a parry mechanic. It thinks Dark Souls would have been better in 2D, and without any of that bothersome atmosphere, enemy variety, polished combat, or world design. Make no mistake - this game is punishing, but in an extremely repetitive and uninteresting way. I really, really wanted to play the game that Unto The End thinks it is. Sadly, that game doesn't exist and the game that does exist kind of completely sucks. Expand

Newsflash: If your game is going to be VERY difficult, it should at least be a LITTLE enjoyable. Unto The End reminds me of Capybara's Below, another very punishing game. While there are probably worse games out there, I haven't played any of them. Unto The End feels like that failed 10 years ago on Newgrounds.

The mood, gameplay, sound design and the visual storytelling are well made. But the game falls short on longevity and replayability.
In this case more would have been better and much needed. When the game ended I felt very underwhelmed.
It had the potential to be something great but it feels more like an unfinished product that ends in the first act.

Unto the End is a game that not everyone can enjoy, or not everyone has the patience to enjoy the game. At the beginning you see a writing that says ''This is a different game'' and it is actually. I don't think it's a soulslike, it doesn't have that checkpoint system, but it has a similar one. At the beginning you see a writing that says ''This is a different game'' and it is actually. I don't think it's a soulslike, it doesn't have that checkpoint system, but it has a similar one. Or the fighting mechanics, it is complitely unique to me I don't really saw a 2D action game that has a similar fighting. But I'll be reviewing the story, gameplay and the general design of the game seperately. So let's begin.

Alright the story part, I won't be giving spoilers by the way, the story is very simple, as a father you got lost trying to hunt a dear, and you try to get back to your home, on the way there are dangerous creatures try to hunt you or protect where they live, but you can fight too. Nothing to criticize actually, but I found myself as a player thinking ''Holy **** this place is actually dangereous I hope they are safe at home''. But don't expect to cry or something like that, I think maybe you are emotional but I don't think you will care what happens to your family %99 of your playtime.

The gameplay is also simple but at the same time very complex, at the beginning you only think you can block, attack and throw a dagger. But as you defeat more enemies using different moves you think ''Oh the father is getting better.'' But that's not true, you are learning to play the game with different strategies and get better, mastering. So how good is the gameplay? It's actually pretty good. You need to be patient and careful fighting your enemies. It's slow paced, but not out of control, but when you press a button twice your character wants to do it even if you pressed 3 seconds ago by accident but that's not a huge problem actually. And this is a hard game! You die constantly trying to kill f*cking stupid weird creatures! Every enemy is deadly like in Dark Souls. But I have a similar problem with the games where you die so many times and try again and again like Hotline Miami or Katana Zero. Well Unto the End is not exactly like that games, well you die but the game is not that fast. But it has an even bigger difference. You don't mindlessly try to ''memorize'' enemies moves, you try to ''learn'' them. For example in Max Payne (I know this games can't be compared in terms of gameplay they are so different I'm just giving examples) you enter a room, get blasted by a shotgun guy, quick load. Now you are going to blast him because you know where he is but then a guy shooting from far away dropped your health quite a bit, quick load. Now you try to one shot him with your deagle etc.. Well in Unto the End you are not playing the game like ''Oh ok, now I will hit this guy with a jump attack then he will try to attack me so I roll back and quickly throw a dagger...'' well Unto the End is not like that, each fight is different even if you fight with the same guys you try different moves, think smart. But I would want to use not just different moves and strategies, but different weapons and equipments. Well this a pretty short game but at you first try (it could be boring if you finish the game twice though) you won't finish the game under 3 hours. Especially if you don't use the assist mode. And in a game like this I'd want to use something different more than another throwable at the very and of the game. But different enemies will force you to change your playstyle, some enemies will make you dodge, some some of them will make you block and the blood effects but some stronger enemies are capable of block right after they attack, so you crouch to hit even faster after escaping their attack or to make a jump attack, but don't forget you can always try your chance and press RT to stun your enemy. Overall I really like the combat.

General atmosphere of the game changes as you play the game and progress and this game has interior parts like caves, and outdoor areas like forests. I hate cave areas and dark parts in games, and this doesn't change in Unto the End, but actually this means they succeeded what they want to. I have chance to communicate with one of the developers (there are only two of them by the way) and Stephen Danton exactly said ''The full game has I think (and hope you'll agree) a good balance of indoor and outdoor areas... so we want a back and forth, a yin and yang. Sometimes we want you to feel uncomfortable, alone or even lost, and then we want you to feel hopeful and free'' and I'm happy to say they did what they want! Well kind of, I found myself hopeless but not hopeful, maybe free yeah, but not hopeful. Because when you enter an outdoor area, there are literaly dead corpses! So in this game don't expect to relax, though the art and though the atmosphere is so beautiful. But on the puzzle part of the game, I found myself hard to navigate. So on the cave parts game can't show it's beauty to me.

I know this isn't a game for anyone, but I recommend if you like what I wrote.

I love this game. The atmosphere is on point, the sound is perfect, and the visuals ideal. The combat is extremely well designed too, way better than it first appears. I played this through many times to see the secret endings. However, if you have no patience, are bad at puzzles, and can't be bothered learning combat mechanics, and if you don't want your inability to rise to a challenge to be exposed, then this game probably won't be for you. On the other hand, if you're up for a real challenge, and if you like a dark and atmospheric setting with a few secrets to find, then maybe your quest to learn the game and ultimately find the secret ending in Unto the End should begin.

Unto the End is a minimalistic, very intense and ultimately exhausting adventure that requires patience. Enemies are always faster than our sluggish hero and almost always unpredictable, so even a lone foe can pose a challenge, while a stronger one will kill you with one strike. Not all encounters seemed fair, by the way. [03/2021, p.45]

Unto the End is a scenic, lonely 2D side-scroller that sets its primary focus on a fixed number of intense battles with its unique combat system that is difficult to learn, but satisfying to master. There is no hand-holding here, though sometimes you might wish there was.

Unto the End just wants to punish the player. It feels like it went too far off the deep end of “purposefully difficult game” and ended up in kaizo territory. The challenge here isn’t fun, it’s just annoying.
