I don't get the hype, it's okay, but the game is far less clever than it thinks it is. The full pacifist play-through is **** too. You can go the entire game without "Fighting" a single creature, but yet you are forced to at the end. That, alone, is what killed this game for me.

Undertale? More like Underdeveloped, because of terrible characters, boring game play, badly paced story, an unlikable main character, and dull set pieces.

The game is mostly a bullet hell which I myself am not fond of. The rest of the game is purely static old rpg build. Also no power ups and a boring way to attack makes this a boring bullet hell.
    2.Graphics 4
I am not a fan of the art style.
    3.Sound 6
I like the music. It was honestly one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. It was classic and retro while being very well put together and fitting for the fights that it went along with. Although that is also it’s downfall, it is tried and true and not really a new or surprising thing in this genre.
    4.Story 6
It can’t decide to take itself seriously or just be plain ridiculous. When it is ridiculous it is overly ridiculous, taking things far beyond the realm of serious just to make a small joke. It tries way too hard to make you laugh and goes so far just to make a small joke that barely even made me chuckle. Then with a whiplash it becomes so serious and dark that it feels out of place and makes you think you changed games. In fact the seriousness doesn’t really even kick in until second play through. There isn’t a lot of history given to the player and there isn’t really a way to figure it out either. It’s also hard to understand the timeline of the world when you consider the 6 souls and how much time has passed since the first. Each scene feels painfully awkward and forced like every character you meet is trying really hard to be a certain stereotype. Papyrus is amazingly self absorbed and won’t look past the mirror in his hand. Undyne is the typical popular girl who everyone wants and everyone wants to be. Alphys is the nerdy, unattractive anime fan girl who is in love with the popular girl that you can find in every teen drama ever made. Metaton is just a celebrity pretty boy who is and wants to be the center of all attention in the underworld. Sans doesn’t make sense, since if he watches you this much and cares this much then why make it all like he doesn’t and let you kill all of them. Asgore doesn’t have the balls to actually avenge his son and instead waits around like a pansy. Toriel is kind to a fault, she doesn’t even want revenge against the creatures that took both her children from her. Asriel’s 180 doesn’t make sense. He is so resolved and lost in his hate and anger that he tries to kill you and the entire world. Then seeing you give mercy he suddenly gains back a soul he had lost, which is remarkably still his with all his memories intact and such seeing as how he died, turned to dust, was used to fertilize a flower, then said flower was filled with so much determination that it gave it sentience from the remnants of a left over soul, which is not corporeal, and drove it mad. You can’t regain a lost soul, at least not like that. The game makes a very big point of saying, in great detail, that monster’s souls don’t last after death. Boss monster’s last but only long enough to get absorbed and that is still not very long at all. If the souls are lost and become nothing so easily then it can’t possibly come back after so much time has passed and though such a ridiculous procedure. Especially when the experiment was done before and what came back was failed amalgamations that were nothing near their former selves. This would all be perfectly fine if the story was silly and allowed for deus ex machine unexplained crap to resolve it but it does actually take itself seriously through the last 2/4ths of the game. Lastly and the most disappointing part of the story is how it is given to you. Toriel explains in the beginning that you don’t have to kill, that you can make that choice. From there the player goes through the pacifist run. If the game was presented instinctually and mercy was a forlorn thought that only came about when you fought Asgore and realized he doesn’t really want to fight at all. Mercy is then opened up as an option and is opened for future play throughs. From there the deep dark side of the story is explored and the player’s mind really blows. Instead the story is silly and leads you right to the final conclusion instead of making you think and really look at your self differently after slaughtering monsters.
I need to point out that the story is not new. It just says out loud what takes place in every RPG ever made. The monsters/soldiers/enemies in general that you are slaughtering to grow levels and save the world do have lives, souls and families. Just because this game yells it at you doesn’t make it a new concept.
    5.Controls 4
The controls are standard and bland. Also seems a bit unresponsive and slow for a bullet hell.
    6.Replay Value 5
There is obviously replay in this game, but that’s the problem. The replay is forced and not a choice made by the player because they enjoyed the game.
    Final Score 5
I had this game legitimately shoved down my throat by fan boys who couldn't fill they're eye holes with enough of it. My review is MEH. If you like bullet hells and or rpgs then you may like.

I gave this game a half hour of play time and it didn't grab me at all. The combat mechanics are trial and error as were the ''puzzles''. It's like they added random pacifist combat to Chip's Challenge. And the game is ugly on top of it. Call it an art style, I call it a low creative ceiling.

I'm sure it gets better eventually, but I've played better games that were made 30 years ago.

    Before I start, please Note:
Going into Undertale the only thing I knew in Advance was that in order to get the good Ending you needed to resolve every encounter in the game peacefully.
    -
    First impression:
Well, at first the game just seemed rather average, although it's unique look appealed to me.
The Combat was, of course, very easy at this point and I already got the impression that peacefully resolving everything in this game will be challenging, frustrating, but fun nonetheless.
That impression changed when I got out of the "Tutorial" and met Sans and Papyrus.
Suddenly the game threw fantastic, funny and, if you dig a bit, deep Characters at me.
At this point in the game there is no big story arc yet, so you just take whatever the game delivers to you.
    -
    And let me tell you:
What it delivers is nothing short of amazing.
But....Sorry fellas, if you're you want to know more about the story, go buy the game.
    -
    So let's continue.
    -
Some might say that this game is having minimalistic, even horrible Graphics, and you know what?
    That's true.
    Does it matter?
    Not at all.
This game is so charming to just look at. The Character Models are all well made as well as all the environments in the game.
The Sound design is really fitting too. Even though the Characters don't have actual voices, the tone that they make while speaking is giving you a good impression how it would sound like if they got Voice Actors.
That way though, everyone is giving them they're own voice, which makes the experience more personal.
Kudos also to the environmental sound design since it does it's job really well.
    -
    Talking about Kudos
You know what else deserves Kudos? It's Soundtrack.
It features over 100 (!) tunes and is nothing but amazingly well made.
They match every situation in the game and can make you happy, angry or sad.
    -
    Let's get puzzled.
    This game has "puzzles."
Quotations because most of the time it aren't really puzzles in the way a fully fledged puzzle game would present them to you, but in a way that is understandable for everyone.
They even have an explanation to why there even are puzzles that is chained to the story in some way though, so not giving that away. - A quick look at the game's Inventory System. You can carry a certain amount of items, which can be found in the environment or be bought from traders. Other way around you can also sell stuff you found for gold, from which you buy more items etc. In some places in the world you can find boxes in which you can store said items. These boxes are all linked together so you have a lot of room for items. - These items also include: Weapons and Armour. Throughout the game you can find all sorts of these. All of them naturally serving a different purpose, with they're different stats. Even if you play peacefully, equipping a weapon can get you a nice bonus like an HP Regeneration every Round. - Fists up, let's talk combat! The combat is really fun. It's best to be compared to bullet hell games, where there is just a ton of **** trying to hurt you from every direction. Fear not though, it's far from being that hard or simple. Let me explain: When you run into a fight the game offers you four different options. - Fight - Act - Items - Mercy If you choose to fight, you damage will depend on you equipped weapon. The game will then flip into a sort of hit-the-button-at-the-right-time type of thing. Basically you have to hit one of three lines to deal damage, otherwise you miss. Act is where the peaceful part comes in. Depending on the enemy, you can persuade you enemy into not wanting to attack you anymore or to check it's stats. Items is pretty self-explanatory. From there you can view you Heal-Items. Mercy only applies to the peaceful players and after persuading. From here you can mercy your enemy and let them go which will result in no EXP gaining. After each action the bullet hell begins. You'll have to doge a wide variety of really creative things in order to not get killed. Whether you're flying while doing so, or jumping, it's really fun and challenging. (It can be frustrating sometimes though) - - I could talk about this game so much longer, but I'm running out of Characters ._. I'll close the review with a clear recommendation to buy this game. It has Charm. It has good Characters, It has a good Story which expands below it's surface and is actually very dark. It breaks the 4th Wall within the story. Is it flawless? No. Do these flaws disturb the experience? No. - That's why Undertale gets a 10/10 from me. - (First Review :3) -

So I began Undertale and the very first thing I took note of upon playing it is it's aesthetic. The overworld seems partially earthbound inspired, with largely flat plains of colour rather than the shaded detailed spritework of Eartbound's contemporaries like Chrono trigger and FFVI. However Undertale's art design is even more stripped down, areas being extremely monochromatic and flat.

After meeting one of the game's core characters I'm introduced to the combat system, and for me this is where the aesthetic began to break down. The visuals shift from a colourful if low fidelity environment to a stark black with minimalist orange text boxes, and enemies are 100% black and white. They also aren't entirely pixel art based, many of them bobbing their heads or moving about slickly, aspects of their portraits rotating and tweening. The inconsistency felt jarring as well as pointless.

However Undertale is less like a full RPG than it is a narratively driven game or "walking simulator" with some token RPG elements. The game is aggressively linear, with almost no diverging paths. At its core it's purely a rail roaded tour, a straight line that you can travel as quickly or as slowly as you like, your only real reward for exploring being the dialogue and flavour text of everything around you. And herein lies the first fault of the game in my opinion. much of the game's attempts at humour are purely to take jabs at otherwise established RPG conventions and mock them from the perspective of the in world characters. You can't sell things at a store because of course you can't it isn't a pawnshop and you're selling a used band aid. The innkeeper gives you a refund because you were only asleep for two minutes, puzzles are mechanisms specifically designed and calibrated by enemies as well as referred to as such, a jeer at ancient temples in adventure games being full of inexplicable block pushing and light reflecting sections. The game has a bad habit of finding one joke it likes and running it into the ground before adopting another and doing the same. A game that is primarily a comedy that fails to make me laugh due to repetition is an obvious hurdle to trip over, but I understand that some people found the game quite funny so perhaps I just have a different taste in comedy which is totally possible as I think Home Movies is hilarious.

About halfway through the entire game my friend who recommended the game to me asked me how I liked it. I'd told her I thought it was okay, the combat was good but felt like wasted potential and she said she thought I'd love it if I loved Earthbound.

And this is where I had to take a stand because Undertale has very little in common with Earthbound. It simply isn't good.

Undertale is okay for the price but I think there's some severe score inflation going on here. It's very short (I beat it in under 4 hours) and although there's some replay value as you can choose different paths, there didn't see to be much else to do. Buy it if you like cheeky retro RPGs but understand that this really wouldn't have been considered very good if it came out back in the day of the RPGs it is inspired by.

This games explosion with audiences is similar to that of Portal. In fact the game themselves have some relation. A silent protagonist travels, solves puzzles, while being kept somewhere against his/ her will, and finding that an evil rules over.... Yeah I can't get the Portal connection out of my head. Looking even further at this we see Portal being incredibly innovative and creative with the standards of FPS's. And Undertale being incredibly innovative with RPG's. There is also a mimetic sequence in both games where a character talks about a food, and that sequence won't stop being talked about in real life. Also both these games have endings that will make you reconsider what a videogame can truly mean. I'm an avid suffer of juvenoia, and love believing that the age I live in is the ultimate age of gaming, so with that in mind I would like to propose the notion that games like these are the equivalent to what Citizen Kane and 2001: A Space Odyssey meant to movies. Again this is a mere opinion from someone who isn't a devote follower of the industry. I understand that this may be just a product of the times, but the amount of people who love the game so fast shows something. These games seem to have confirmed that they are classics at the bare minimum, only time will reveal how they hold up. This review has been 40% review, and 60% pretentious speculation, you're welcome.A game that wasn't really seen as something that would leave a huge impact, but did so regardless is a game worth talking about. I feel that the lack of pressure to churn out perfection is what lead to, as many people say, perfection. I wouldn't go so far as to call it perfection but it certainly works for what it wants to be. It seems like Undertale was made by people who never knew about movies, TV, or books because all the comedy in this game comes from sheer interactive choices. The timing is also great, even though you choose the next sequence, the game does so much to make dialogue and interactions last a long time. The gameplay kept me invested and truthfully I felt very moved by the ending. Everyone has said this but I do feel that the fact that it was our decisions that ultimately led to the creation of our relationship with this world makes it all the more sweeter. If you just showed a predetermined course where the character goes, you lose some of the impact because it becomes less personal. This truly is a game that only works as a videogame, which shows the true beauty in this game. Expand

The biggest problem with the puzzles is that they were all set up in such a way that you needed a hint to solve them, but once you read the hint (which is always sitting conveniently next to the puzzle) the solution was obvious. In all but one or two of the Legend of Zelda games, the puzzles were either just laid of in front of you for you to figure out, or if there was ever any kind of hint or unknown solution, you had to explore further to find it. Perhaps it is unfair to compare two games of different genres, but the point is that there was nothing interesting let alone captivating about the puzzles. All they did was make the game slightly longer.

The story carries the game along with the level of control the player has over the story. Without the ability to choose how you want the story to go, this game would be bland. With that aspect, it is above average, but that's about it.

A vomir !

In recent years, there have been a few things which have been widely adored for their wholesomeness. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic set the Internet on fire with its brony fandom, attracted to it by its positive message and general wholesomeness. Steven Universe likewise inspired many people.

This is the world that Undertale entered, and brought into the world a very wholesome roleplaying game.

There’s one central conceit, upon all the rest of which the edifice is built – Undertale is a turn-based RPG where no one has to die. Every single enemy in the game – from random encounters to boss monsters – can be spared. You don’t have to kill anyone, and indeed, can befriend almost everyone you meet if you work at it hard enough.

The game, then, is a very wholesome thing – it’s a game where you have the choice to be a good person or a terrible, murderous one. And if you choose to be a bad person – if you choose to murder the many goofy monsters that inhabit its world… well, it will be merciless in showing you just what an awful person you are, and how hurt everyone is by what you’re doing.

This is a game which is on its surface very light and cheerful – there’s a large number of goofy characters, and indeed, almost everyone in the game is quite silly when you get down to it. You’ve got Toriel, a goat monster who tells corny jokes. You’ve got Alphys the hapless shut-in otaku scientist who is deeply socially inept but who tries to help you anyway. You’ve got Papyrus the skeleton, who speaks in the titular font and who has no idea how funny he is, and who gives you his phone number to try and help you out, but who mostly instead just makes terrible jokes about the areas you’re in.

But there’s a disturbing undertone to it all. Toriel doesn’t want you to leave, and apparently has left the rest of the monsters for some reason. Alphys is depressed and not only unable to come to grips with her feelings, but has apparently failed in some disastrous way that has led her to shut herself off from the rest of society – and the further you go, the more you learn about just what happened. And Papyrus… okay, he’s just a goof. But the further you go, the more obvious that there is just something OFF about the world you’re exploring.

There’s some real darkness lurking under the surface, with some monsters wanting to steal your powerful soul to use it to break the monsters free and overrun the human world, a talking flower who keeps encouraging you to become a murderer, and the whole fact that you *can* kill everyone in the game… if you’re a terrible person. There’s something fundamentally wrong with the world of Undertale, and yet, the people in it manage to be surprisingly wholesome anyway, with everyone having some core of goodness to them, no matter how far lost they might seem at first glance.

This balance of humor, wholesomeness, and disturbing darkness all works together to create a very compelling package. Combined with a highly novel system where you defend yourself in the turn-based combat by dodging enemy attacks in a sort of shoot-em-up type thing that turns into something bordering on bullet hell by the end of it, and the game feels very fresh, despite being what appears to be on the surface a simple retro 8-bit turn-based RPG.

This is a game that breaks its own rules, which integrates story and gameplay, which makes the player laugh but also makes the player love the characters and want to protect them and keep them from harm. It’s a game that makes the player CARE.

That’s why people love it so much. The gameplay, without everything else, would only be okay. But the way that everything in this game is so tightly tied together – and the way that the game deliberately both helps and misguides the player to put them at risk of hurting the goofy inhabitants of the world – makes Undertale an experience that many people won’t want to miss.

That isn’t to say it is perfect – it has some issues with pacing here and there, especially in the pentultimate portion of the game, where things start to drag with a long series of repetitive puzzles, and in a game as short as this is, the weak portion of the game is all the more prominent.

But by the end of Undertale, I was filled with warm and fuzzy feelings. I felt good about completing this game – indeed, in my whole time playing video games, I think I’ve only felt this good about a game a handful of times. Portal and Portal 2. The Talos Principle. Chrono Trigger. And now this.

And in the end, it’s hard to say that a game that made me feel this good about having played it isn’t amazing.

If all you’re looking for is challenging gameplay, this isn’t the game for you. But if you’re someone who does like being touched by a charming (if offbeat) story and characters, you shouldn’t miss out on this.

    Cons

The style and the characters/dialogues are fairly childish (JRPG-style, basically, although a lot of games in that genre also try to be more mature). The plot is imaginative enough overall, though.

And interesting, fresh mechanics are a reason enough to check this one out.

Whenever I hear of a quirky role-playing game, I immediately think of one of my favorite game series of all time: Earthbound (a.k.a. Mother). Mother). That series's cult following has spawned quite a few projects inspired by it, and Undertale is the latest in that club. What sets this particular title apart, however, is that it has loads of original ideas thrown in the mix, providing an experience that is honestly unlike anything I've ever played. A mere clone this is not.

The world of Undertale is characterized by a struggle between humans and monsters. Humans, possessing stronger souls, won the war and confined the monsters to the underground. You play as a human child who inadvertently fell through a hole, finding himself stranded on monster land. From there you'll encounter a host of quirky characters in your quest to get back to the surface, experiencing some pretty great writing along the way. The musical score is also worth mentioning, as it's a superb collection of intensely hummable chiptunes.

What makes Undertale truly unique is how it allows you leeway on how you want to go about the adventure. Every single battle you enter, from random encounters to boss fights, can be solved through non-violent means (some of which further showcase the funny writing). Deciding whether to engage in combat with any given foe can have big consequences on the storyline, too, including future interactions with new characters. If you do choose to battle, though, you'll be treated to several different real-time, minigame-like sequences that make the whole process an absolute blast.

At around five hours from beginning to end, Undertale is short as far as RPGs go. This means, however, that the prospect of doing additional playthroughs, making different decisions along the way, becomes a lot more palatable. Right after I was done with the completely mind-blowing final boss fight, I immediately rebooted the game to start over, which really is a testament to how interesting the world and lore in the game are.

Undertale's main flaw, in my eyes, is how sometimes the storytelling takes away from the challenge. Often you'll be faced with a seemingly awesome puzzle, only to soon realize you'll never even get to solve it, all for the sake of a punchline. Other sections are so heavy in storytelling that gameplay end up all but absent, save from button presses to switch from a block of text to the next. It helps that, like in Earthbound titles, the writing has a pretty great mixture of comedy and poignancy, with doses of plain weirdness thrown in, which in turn makes you care enough about the characters that the extended dialogue sections aren't a chore to go through.

My main impression after finishing the game twice over is that the hype is certainly justified, as Undertale is a game that won't be easily forgotten by those who play it. Even if you're not that big on RPGs, there are enough quirks and new genuinely good ideas on display that just maybe you'll find yourself as enthralled by this curious little title as most people seem to have gotten.

The concept of not having to kill anyone is a very nice thing, and all the enemies are unique and have different "standards".
For such a "small" game, it has a lot of lore and backstory. There's no surprise that this game has been getting so much love.

For people willing to give different kinds of games a chance, I highly recommend Undertale.

Undertale is an RPG/Bullet Hell hybrid, but make no mistake, it's all about the story. At the heart of Undertale is a choice system revolving around killing or sparing the enemies you fight. I really like the idea behind this system, but unfortunately it doesn't ever culminate in a moment where I really don't know which option to choose (Unlike its more adult counterpart, LISA.) But past this, it has some of the best characters in a game to date, and the story tackles themes you'd never expect from this kind of game. The gameplay as well is wonderful, it changes up throughout the game, and each time it provides a unique way to explore the game's battle system. The soundtrack is really wonderful as well, and it's interesting to see motifs tie back into each other throughout the game. It's very difficult to describe a lot of the specifics of this game without spoiling them, but take my word when I say it's worth every cent of it's $9.99 price tag, and then some. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game! It takes real, I mean REAL talent to even get something like a 9 on my list. Yes, I know, I have Minecraft, Super Mario Maker, at the time of this review, a 9 as well, and The Incredibles at a 10, but that doesn't matter, what matters now is the game.

I came into this game blind with no expectations whatsoever. Now, just to warn you, I have only fully played through the game once. I have attempted to replay it, but I decided not to finish it because the dialogue wasn't changed enough in the other endings enough to really give it that much replay value TO ME that is which is why I don't consider that a flaw because the replay value in this game is optional, according to the player.

The game is not without it's flaws. The weird looking little boy that always praised Undyne needed more character depth and a less abrupt finish to his existence in the game. I always felt that he could have been used as a turning pont in any of the endings and was cast out as nothing. Another thing that was wrong were the blue signs on the wall (especially during the Undyne arc) that told you about the history of humans and monsters that was either: told at the intro, or told by characters, especially toward the end. There are also certain treasures and secrets that are so obscure, that you have no motivation to find out any information about them. Especially at the beginning of the game, there are certain hints from signs or characters about a random statement that I expected to be remembered for an oncoming puzzle, but I got a little angry when they just turned out to me meaningless jokes most of the time.

On the contrary, there are soooooooo many pros in the game. The humor was great and unique for an RPG. Storytelling was fantastic, I was enticed in every single moment offered at me. The CHARACTERS, the characters were SO well done. I liked something about every character in the game, an accomplishment not many can pull off. Some people found the gameplay boring and uninspired, but I didn't. I loved the gameplay, it was unique and so fun that I kept playing against the same bosses over and over again, even when they take 10 tries to beat (Asgore, I'm looking at you). The music is what drove the game inside the game. It made the atmosphere and the OST was PHENOMENAL. It either made me somber, nostalgic, or pumped at the right moments, possibly the best soundtrack of the decade. With that being said, the best thing about the game had to do with me in reality.

I got the neutral ending of the game. Not that that mattered anyways, I felt like a shameless/selfish monster when I was through with my first playthrough.

I got the neutral ending only because I didn't kill the gelatin creatures, the Whimsuns, or Asgore. THAT'S IT. That means I killed Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, Muffet, and everyone else. The first three were REALLY regretful, especially Papyrus. I found out he was innocent when his death was just, like his life, a joke, and it hit me harder than for most players. Anyways, when I decided to spare Asgore, I thought all of the killing I did could somehow be forgiven by Sans and especially Alphys (Favorite character of the game, I had a really odd crush on her by the end). BUT NOPE, all hope for anything dies out, and you don't really know what happens to your character, but I didn't care about my character anymore because I hated him/myself.

That's why I praise this game so much in that aspect; it's to give you a strong feeling of yourself. Doesn't matter what feeling, but something that makes you alive. Not many video games claim that achievement.

This is not a game that is supposed to be THE BEST GAME EVER (as some people would say) from the very beginning .It plays with what the player knows about RPGs and games in general , but you have to finish it at least twice to really get it and say whether you like it or not .I've seen so many stupidely over or underrated reviews of this game by people who didn't even play it or not enough to pronounce a judgment.

Personally, I really enjoyed my time playing it , and it don't feel like I have the perfect opinion or whatever but play it before saying good or bad things about it . ^^

Oh yeah and the fandom sucks a lot , it's really impressive

I persisted, playing an hour here and there. Once I had beaten Undyne and around about the time of Mettaton's arrival, I started getting into it. By the time I met Asgore, my tune had changed. I understood what the fuss was about. The emotional payload pierced me, and I thought, actually this is very good.

I can't say it's a great game, because I didn't really enjoy playing most of it, but I have to say, it's great when it finally engages. There's a lot in it that missed with me more than hit.

The music is excellent, and deserves a special mention.

    Story: 11/10

Undertale is a game that knows when to be quirky, when to be tongue-in-cheek, and when to be morbidly, unrelentingly dark and real with you. When in the end, a character asks you to think about my actions which led me to that point, I realized that my blind adherence to genre tropes have led me to chose a sociopathic decision at the very beginning...and I felt genuine remorse! In the end,I opted to finish the game on an imperfect run, thinking I would just restart - instead, the game treated me to the most disturbing finale and boss battle I ever had...AND organically enticed me to replay it the way I truly wanted to! What else? Characters are deliberately anachronistic or archetypal, with notable exceptions...but Fox manages to paint a beautiful tablou on that single dimension some characters have.

    Gameplay 9/10

Within the limitations of a retro RPG engine, the big names of the industry struggle to innovate. Toby Fox doesn't struggle - he embraces the limitations and combines a challenging bullet hell mechanic with a standard turn based system. My recommendation for all new players is to forget about the EXP bar, as battles offer a purely skill-based and not loot/EXP-based alternatives. Puzzles are somewhat of a stumbling block, in that it takes a while for them to become a mechanic, rather than a spoof of adventure game puzzles.

    Music - 10/10

Bonetrustle, Muffet's theme, Megalovania...my God, the music is so good in this!

Final score: 10/10 - A MUST PLAY AND A MUST HAVE!!!

Undertale has the best writing I've seen in a game. Unlike other games It keeps itself balanced. It stays humorous and funny, but staying serious when in it needs to be all while making you feel either disturbed or heart felt. But my reason for detracting a few points is mainly the game play. Now please don' for this hate on me, but I found the game play very lacking in Undertale. The puzzles were just filler for the most part. The only thing that made them enjoyable was the dialogue and writing Included in them. There were only a handful of good puzzles in the game, and they were short lived. The battle system isn't great either. Don't get me wrong I love fighting the enemies especially on a pacifist run, but the only reason for that is the writing. Other than that all the enemies are mostly just pushovers with uninspired attacks. The only good enemies were at endgame, they were a real challenge. In end I think Undertale is a wonderful game with amazing characters, a great soundrack, and the best writing ive ever seen, but it doesn't live without its flaws. Even if it is my favorite game of all time I do penalize it for some lacking game play. If they had done more with the enemies similar to what they had done with bosses then I would rate this game for more than what it is currently worth. Expand

A friend recommended me this game after I told him I received a $20 steam card for Christmas. I previously had only seen the cover of this game when scrolling through the Steam store. My friend told me all about the revolutionary spin on turn based combat, the unique characters, the moral choices, the witty and often subtle humor, and the emotional gripping story.
So after hearing him ramble on and on about the splendor of this game, I bought it.
When I first began the game I didn't know what to expect. I enjoyed the atmosphere and simplistic, yet nostalgic art style and the characters I encountered. The story was very lighthearted as I explored the pleasant underground world. The feels built up heavily inside of me in the most unexpected times. I found myself talking to every single NPC in order to experience more of the slight humor. And the music. Oh the music. I can't even begin to explain the beauty of the music and how it matches so perfectly to the moments you find yourself in the story. The entire journey was entertaining and, while some criticize it as slow, was a very peaceful and fulfilling experience. The ending, of which there are many, which I experienced made me cry like a little baby child over the sheer beauty of it. And I have only but scratched the surface.
It was after playing through the game which I fully grasped the scale of the profound artistry which filled the entire game by its motifs, tropes, and symbolism. The weight and moral implications of murder, even in a digital world led me to hours of philosophical reflection. The emotional grasp the game puts on you with its characters makes you care for them and understand their and all of the other monsters struggles and desperation. The often hinted ideas of what it means to truly be a "monster." The sense that you are in a world much bigger and more complex than yourself.
I know I am rambling on, but oh man was this game the best and most refreshing title I have played in a long, long time.
Buy this game and experience it for yourself if you are into rich, story based gameplay.
And to indicate how much I loved this game: I made a metacritic account for the sole purpose of reviewing this game.

The game design itself is unique, since nowadays, you won't really be expecting a 8-16 bit game to be one of the most popular games of the current decade. Undertale was based on Earthbound, a game created by Nintendo in the 1990s. The EarthBound references in Undertale are a bit heavy, but most people think its fine. I also love how there are 3 different routes, and how it's ultimately the players decision, to kill, or not to kill.

Undertale is worth your 10 bucks. That's all I have to say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale is charming, to boot, with likable characters and entertaining slapstick, but it's also emotionally controlling. That being said, it's not perfect.

There are two main choices that appear when you encounter an enemy: Fight and Mercy. I guess this is what most call the 'gimmick,' of Undertale. Depending on which you choose, your ending will be dramatically changed. Choosing to fight and grind is frowned upon by the fanbase, and even the characters in the game. If you choose to kill every encountered enemy, and even hunt them down just for experience, you will get the Genocide ending. It's just as it sounds. You kill everything, villages are evacuated, and Gold, the world's currency, is useless because even the shops are abandoned. You are treated horribly, and to put it bluntly, just like a mass murderer.

But then there's the Pacifist route. You get a lighthearted feel, jokes, puzzles, and make a few weird friends along the way. To get the Pacifist ending you have to somehow spare every monster you run into, often by flirting, and you'll be rewarded by what fans call the 'True ending.' This is the best ending, by far, because you, along with your friends, return to the surface.

There are a few negatives though, as a few characters aren't ideal. The best characters in my opinion are the goat family and the skelebros. The graphics can't compare with the average games, though, but it fits the feel better than 3D graphics would. Depending on what kind of person you are, the comedy might be cringy and unfunny, and the OST might be repetitive to you. But really, it's all subjective.

If you're looking for a different game with decent characters, by all means, get it. 10$ really isn't all that much compared to loads of other games like this one.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

This is a game that *needs to be a game* to tell the story the way it's intended. It uses the medium to its advantage in crafting the narrative. It would lose a lot in translation to a book or movie. It's funny, sad, thoughtful, and heartfelt. Every character is brilliantly written. Gameplay is fun and very different from most other RPGs.

That's the best part of this game, and I listened to the soundtrack before I played this game, so the soundtrack is what convinced me to try it out. Also, I wanted to see what all the fuss was and see why some voted it as the best game of all times, especially after a long contest was done on certain sites to vote for it. I was outraged how this game was voted beyond some of the other classic and amazing games out there.

I didn't want to just be a disgruntled gamer and allow my nostalgia for past games to cloud my judgment, without even playing the game myself. That's when I finally got a chance to give it a try.

Despite the soundtrack sounding like any old JRPG soundtrack, I can never get sick of hearing JRPG style music in various forms. Although this game and soundtrack was done by an American who is a large fan of JRPGs.

The gameplay itself was rather boring, and the story itself was nothing new or special. Monsters or enemies attacking you at first, and then you befriend them. It's a typical shounen anime story, or stories you even see in a lot of video games. There's a few unique things sprinkled throughout to try and make this game differ from any other RPG, especially JRPG, even though this game is technically not a JRPG.

The combat was a little fun, but I think it was fun because the game is so short, I wasn't spending hours doing the same combat system over and over again. I can't imagine if the game was 5-10x in length, and repeating this same combat system for that long. I think due to the game also being short, people were able to like it a little more, because there was no tedious grinding or side quests which might've been a boring fetch quest.

The menus and equipment was rather simple, and it truly felt like a NES game. The NES games had their time, and that's why they just remain that, a classic. Trying to do a NES type game now just feels a bit ridiculous and feeding off nostalgia. With the internet, there's so many things for people to get their nostalgia fix.

Other than putting a lot of work into the soundtrack, which seems noticeable, the rest just feels like lazy work in a game for a quick money grab and to have that 15 minutes of fame.

This is voted as the best game ever, but I think it was voted that back in 2015. It's an insult to gaming for this title to be voted as such, and I am almost positive this game won't really be talked about much in 10 years, while other classic games will still be talked about.

Every year or two, there's an indie game that the Internet grows attached to. In 2015, Undertale was that game. From a rich story to its phenomenal soundtrack (which I still love 2 years later), this is one of my favorite games of all time. And whether you choose to take the path of a true pacifist or the "genocide" path, this game will rarely fail to entertain you in one way or another.
Now, while this is without a doubt one of my favorite games right now, the only problems I had were that some of the characters either didn't have enough information or it was too vague (W. D. Gaster gets a pass since this was done on purpose.), particularly Chara. The vast majority of the community has been lead to believe that Chara is some sort of homicidal maniac - now don't get me wrong, I see where you're coming from with that belief - and in fact, the small (in comparison) number of people who don't believe this and in fact were against the so-called genocide path are seemingly silenced out; and we too have our fair share of evidence to lead us to our conclusion!
The other problem is in the true pacifist ending. When you "save" Asriel, you're not given the choice or some sort of way to convince him into returning to his family. Now, had we been given that power, the true pacifist ending would be a true ending to me - Asriel getting to see his family again, and to know he'd live on the surface in the end...
Well, other than those 2 points, I don't have much to say about it critically speaking. Great game, great soundtrack, almost worthy of calling it a 10/10. Good work, Toby Fox.

Undertale is absolutely unique. It's a RPG masterpiece full of weird characters and a moving message.

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
