One of the best games EVER. The graphics are old, but who cares! About 3 endings. Not just one. There is an very interesting story. There are lots of enemies. Instead of just beating them, you can spare them. Only one minus; the genocide route. BUT WHO CARES! The genocide route is so hard. The soundtrack is good, too. This is worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is really good~ It's based on a really REALLY great game called "Earthbound." The creator, Toby Fox, is really funny and cool. He has made another game before, Hacked version of Earthbound. SO, with that, let's review the game itself. So you're a kid who fell to the underground. You learn that the humans and monsters had a war many years ago. But you also learn about the monsters and some really good life lessons like "Treat others with kindness and they will (probably) give you kindness back" or "Always stay determined and never give up on yourself!" We should probably talk about these really cool characters. Let's start off with the character you first meet, Flowey! He's evil but with a purpose. Toriel loves humans (for a reason that is a HUGE spoiler~) Sans is a smart but lazy skele (Also SPOILERS) Papyrus, an over working INNOCENT skele because he is a GREAAAAT PAPYRUS after all. There's undyne. She's the head of the royal guard, and REALLY hot headed. She thinks humans are anime and is over all innocent (besides killing you) Alphys is a weeb scientist. Asgore is the king (and a WHOLE LOT of spoilers) And there are two other main characters but they are also spoilers~ I love this game because
of there's no going back. If you do something, like killing EVERYONE, there's no going back.

I love this game because at times it is horrifying but cute at the same time.

What do I say that no one else has already said, great game, great music, great game play, and great pixel graphics and animations. Can’t wait for Toby fox to make another game already, although I do hope it isn’t Undertale, it has a satisfying ending and should stay that way, but definitely can’t wait for another game by him.

This game is a breath of fresh air for RPGs and gaming in general. It questions morality in an interesting way and has the characters to back up this statement.

Amazing music, fun gameplay, interesting story.

The only part where it could fall flat is the artstyle. It isn't too amazing, but doesn't detract from the game experience at all.

P.S. (Many haters say that the game is bad only because of its community and graphics. Well, for the first time the game cannot spoil the community because it is single in dota 2 and cs: go yes it can-be. It's extremely linear and although your choices are recorded by the game, honestly there just isn't that many choices you can actually make, its more like one choice over and over again. Because of these things, as a whole the game is much more like 'one shot' by Mathew Velasquez and NightMargin than earthbound. Which isn't bad. One shot was great and if you liked that game I would recommend this game or vice-versa.

I would just agree that this game is similar to earthbound in more of an Easter egg way, then anything else . However, you have to consider, earthbound, was a fully staffed, and much larger game. Which is all the more reason to buy this game and support Toby. Unlike soooo many kickstart games that are ridiculously bad or never even finished. I think Toby delivered a solid enough game to give me hope. This game is not an epic adventure, its more like a fun romp in a very small city. But if you enjoy it for what it is, it is fun enough. And who knows, Undertale 2, or whatever is next, could be spectacular.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This essay is as non-spoiler-y as possible until a paragraph later on. I'll let you know before hand if you want to keep your experience garden fresh.
It's very strange for me to be writing a legitimate review on just about any game, but I feel that Undertale is an exception to the rule in the fact that although it is extremely flawed, the parts that make up the whole are incredibly charming and amazing in more ways than a rational human being should imagine.

Mechanically, it's really not the most amazing thing in the world. When you break it down, the fighting system is entirely timing based and the mercy system a more intuitive version of the part-time barista minigame in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. But where it shines is how exactly it uses this admittedly bland system to make many fights their own little events. The best example I can give without being too spoiler-y is one of the main boss battles, in which you're confronted by someone who's been chasing your tail for quite a while, but you manage to escape every time. How do you win peacefully against this rather determined figure? By running away of course!

The story, to be honest, is very weird and sometimes a bit convoluted. A few plot points hinge on smaller details, and unless you're meticulous, you might just miss them. It is rather amusing, however, and if you can keep up you're in for one hell of a ride. The best part about the story is, again, how it twists itself to fit the situation. It remembers everything you do. If you think I'm joking, I'm not. It remembers if you accidentally hurt someone and tried to go back so you didn't do it again. It remembers if you lied to someone, how you reacted, IF you hurt someone...

If anything shines directly and without remorse, it's the artistic presentation in three mediums; the writing, the art, and the music. Every character is a /character/. If you fight them, their fighting animation is unique to them and them alone. Their speech patterns are never shared unless they're more minor NPCs, and every major character has a personalized Bebebese they say with their lines. But even minor characters have some serious personality, such as the odd Vegetoid or the Temmies. Settings are, indeed, settings. The look and feel of each area, from the Ruins to Hotland, varies drastically. You can feel the freezing cold or sweltering heat, the water spraying onto the rocks or even the eerie silence of a hopeless city. The music made me cry. No, seriously. Near the end of the game I was bawling like a child, and I cried again the day after completing it. The music is just gorgeous.

But if there's anything I want to praise louder than anything is the tone of the entire experience. For reference, my first run was Pre-Pacifist and my second was True, so I got the fluffy end of the stick. For those of you taking the No Mercy run first, you will not have the same experience. In fact your experience will be drastically different and could reshape the entire game for you, and that's part of what I like about it. The game, as I experienced it, is one of becoming more than the sum of yourself. I know it sounds weird but hear me out.

Here's where the spoilers kick in, so skip this if you don't want to be spoiled.

At the end of the True Pacifist run, you have to fight someone in particular who not only sucked up six of the seven human souls needed to break the barrier, but literally every monster soul in the entirety of the caverns. You cannot beat this boss with violence. Your attacks always miss him and his defense is infinity. What you can do is hope and dream with all your essence that you can persevere, and eventually you discover even this was not enough. You cannot defeat this boss on your own. Instead, you reach out to your friends souls, the ones that you made along the way, and free them. Each of them are just as you remember from before, but it is only after you remind them that what they were is not all they can be, and that you can be a part of them, that they truly snap out of their trance. Finally, then, you can reach out to the one who took them in the first place, and ask him if you can be a part of him too. It's an amazing, touching, epic moment, and it spoke to the small, afraid ten year old me inside that was still making these mistakes. It hit me right there.

    Spoilers over!

If this was any other game, without its charm and compassion to do something just a bit different, Undertale would be mediocre at best. The music and art save it from being trash, and the characters would bump up the experience, but the combat and story would still be a slog. As it is, however, Undertale is what it strives to teach; you can make those mistakes. You are greater than the sum of your parts. Remember those who taught you that, and you will go far in life.

Or you can just kill everyone and have a really bad time. Your choice, really.

Undertale is an absolutely charming, hilarious and clever indie RPG that wound up making me incredibly emotionally invested within the very first hour. Toby Fox clearly understands what makes a RPG great, and understands the many flaws that the genre harbors and channeled all that knowledge into Undertale.

The theme the game carries is being a 'friendly RPG' where killing is totally unnecessary and your choice alone. It's a theme that's more than just conventional and runs deep into the core, and works absolutely wonderfully and results in extremely great encounters and dialogue.

Nothing in Undertale feels like a drag. Everything has been put into the game for very specific purposes, and it almost feels like Toby Fox thought of every possible outcome when working on the game. It's mind blowing.

It sounds like I'm just nerding out and gushing about the game, but it really is that fantastic. The flaws that I have are purely nitpicks and do nothing to ruin what the game pushes forward. NPCs could look more lively and I would've loved to see more of the world it presents, amongst other things. All just little tiny nitpicks.

The sad thing is, talking about many of the things that make Undertale the fantastic game it is would require spoiling the experience itself. However, to put it in short... I don't believe I'll ever be able to play another RPG the same way again after experiencing Undertale.

Please do yourself a favour and play this spectacular game.

    Let's keep it simple.

This game just blow my freaking mind (with 8-bit graphics*)

Short yet satisfied story planned out

Undertale, easily one of my game of the year and even on my best game I had ever player list

This game is SO hard that is HARD to

Just play this game, Since I dont want to spoil much I cant tell you how much this game is worth the prize that Toby is asking. I'll tell you one thing: If the game makes you not want to hurt final boss, and instead tell him that you wont fight him and later give him a hug, it has done a good job. Easily a competitor for the best game of 2015 and Best Indie game of 2015.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale was a brilliant game for me. It's been a while since I bothered to spend my money on a new game, and I'm glad that this was the one I chose.

The story is emotional and incredibly deep. I don't plan to spoil anything here, but if you're looking for a JRPG with a neat storyline, this one should blow your expectations; and the fact that there's more to the plot than just the story (its confusing, but once you figure it out it turns out there's much more than first meets the eye).

Obviously the fact that you didn't have to destroy anyone, as advertised, made Undertale special. It had its own unique spot in the JRPG world; or at least, thats the way I've seen it - perhaps someone with more fond knowledge of that game type will be able to disagree with me.

But what truly made me want to write this review was that this game makes you feel for every action you make. Sometimes it's actually better to look up the result of an action you're unsure of, at least the way I see it, as long as you try to not spoil the plot for yourself at all. But for every decision in this game (except two of them - this game was tough), I decided on my own what I had to do and wanted to do, and every time I got the outcome I was looking for.

You are rewarded for your determination. Just remember that you should always go for what you think is right.

(Also, dogs. I don't think I'll ever look at a dog the same way.)

I don't really want to go telling you about the game, the other positive reviews are here for this, what I really want is to talk about the guys who did negative reviews...
    To begin with, I think that nowadays, kids like you that give negative reviews to this game, S H O U L D B U R N I N H E L L.
but being serious, let's read (without thinking they are telling the truth, cause they are joking or are just retards) the negative reviews, let's begin with a little scum of humanity that I found here called "RetroGirl" (you can know by the name that she is a attwhore), and you can ask me "why are you talking about exactly and exclusively about this review?" then I answer "just because this little girl kinda combined everything that haters posted here in a 'well-made-6-years-old-review'" sooooooooooo let's read:
"I was put off by the weird mix of retro graphics right away- Enemies from Galactica, some SNES sprites, some NES, and some PlayStation background elements." okay okay okay, in this part we can note two things:
    1- this girl is just a kid;
2- kids like to talk about graphics as it make some difference to the gameplay.
guys, we are in 2015, DON'T be childish to think that graphics can make a difference, even because the designs were made by only 2 guys with no professional tools, and I think they are pretty damn good for a two-person team, the animations are also gorgeous.
    TO PART TWO!
    "The "puzzles" are laughable with most involving remembering a previous room." wait vvwait vvvvwait... this girl is saying that most of the puzzles involve remembering a previous room?!11one!?? THIS. ONLY. HAPPENS. IN. THE. TUTORIAL. she only did the tutorial and sent a review to Metacritic! such a beautiful love story ;-;
well, I think we can conclude two things with this:
1- she only did the tutorial to send a review
2- the puzzles are not hard but are not like that, they are "fun"

    TO PART THREE LADS!
"The characters lack real development so accidentally killing one evokes no emotion other than annoyance that you ruined the chance of a good ending. It all relies on you resolving the cognitive dissonance of everyone raving about the game when it's just long, unpleasant, and dull in a positive way." ...so, this one is kinda long, but we need to do it so other people can play this wonderful game.
about the line that she says about the characters development, acording to what she played (the tutorial), the player only mets one character, Toriel, that has lot of lore to discover through the game.
also, when she says that accidentally killing one evokes no emotion other than annoyance that you ruined the chance of a good ending, she might don't understand what the game is about, the game is about K A R M A, if you kill everyone in the game you will get the GENOCYDE ending, if you kill some but also let some live, you get the NEUTRAL ending, and if you don't kill anyone you get the TRUE PACIFIST ending. so, what does that mean? That means that you have more than one playstyle, which every route let you know more and more about the game lore, so you need to end it more than two times to know it all! obviously, the TRUE PACIFIST ending is the one that is called the "good ending", where everyone /l/e/a/v/e/ /t/h/e/ /c/a/v/e/ and live hapilly, but every ending or the wiki are needed to understand the lore, who are you, who is the TRUE enemy, what are the monsters etc.
Now that we finished about that little child review, I'll just add one thing
THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING (even if it was created by only one single guy, gj)

So, what I really wanted to do is to show everybody that the negative reviews are sooooo superficial that the game would have arround 9-10 points without them, cause they have no sense, who the hell would play the tutorial of a game and do a review? This is insane, I hate the fact that this kind of person breaths the same air that I do.

Have a good , kisses and hugs to everyone that read this all.

It's a nice game, interesting breaks in the fourth wall. But ultimately a shallow universe of twists in convention and narrative tricks. I wouldn't be pointing these out if it wasn't for the overwhelmingly positive reviews it has gotten so far. I think we need a few more level-headed reviewers to bring the score down to something a bit more reasonable.

Undertale is the most overrated game ever. I know, this game have original ideas and interesting plot twist. But the level of quality is poor. Maybe I played many good Indie games, but this game is not so good. And here's why:
Firstly, the plot of the game is not deep. It's just a rollercoaster of twists and fourth wall breaks. Characters in this game are plain and idiotic. And humor is stupid. Very stupid. If you came here for plot, you're in wrong way. It's just an absurd comedy with simple kindergarten moral "Don't Kill".
Second, this game is too childilsh. Sometimes Undertale tries to become "serious" or "scary". This game is too weird for me. Most of time is oversweet melodrama, but if you play at Genocide route, this game become into edgy horror.
Also this game gives to player illusion of non-linearity. All variability is just choosing to play as angelic pretty child or juvenile maniac. There are no challenging moral dilemmas, especially after you learned about the conditions for reaching the endings. This game is very linear.
And yeah, graphics. Undertale's pixel-art is terrible even for Indie games. There are so many SNES games with beautiful pixel-art like Chrono Trigger or Tales of Phantasia. Just look at Hyper Light Drifter. This game is also created in Game Maker Studio and it have breathtaking visual art. And where's optimization? Why this game is run only on 4:3?
Well, the game's music is the only thing, that makes this game good. I liked Asgore's theme much.
This review if just my opinion. If you like the game, then I will not blame you. It's just an overhyped game with terrible fanbase of 14 year old schoolgirls.

Music's great. Been listening to the soundtrack almost non-stop for a few days now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is so bad it refers to its own puzzles simply as "puzzles". "In order to proceed you must solve this puzzle", "the dungeon is full of puzzles" etc. Yep, that's modern writing for you. Not to mention that the puzzles themselves suck, of course. Why are they even in the game. Also during the fight with that obnoxious gay-robot my father came into the room and spotted what kind of **** I was playing. He got so mad he actually sweared to send me to the military school. Eventually, he didn't, but I wonder that it could've been for the best. It'd certainly help me to absolve my soul after playing this abomination of gaming. Expand

UnderTale is a video game that was released for the PC platform on Sep. 15th, 2015 by Toby Fox. There are many aspects to UnderTale and before I reach my final conclusion, I want to cover those subjects.

Developer: Toby Fox is a fantastic developer, who takes the often obsessive (and even toxic) fanbase in stride. A great example of an indie developer, Toby hasn't appeared to sell out (yet), limiting and restricting the amount of offical UnderTale merchandise. While every store on the face of the Earth may carry Five Nights at Freddy's merchandise, Toby tends to be much more selective on who can sell his product.

Programming: A well programmed game, during the time I spent with UnderTale, at no time did I experience any bugs or crashes (that weren't intended by the developer).

Mechanics: UnderTale is a "bullet hell" stylized RPG in which the player will have to physically dodge enemy attacks while being confined to a box. During this phase, players move a red heart, which represents your "soul". While your attack is a fairly standard JRPG turn based attack, enemy attacks tend to be much lengthier and involve dodging bullets and memorizing attack patterns.

While this combat mechanic will start off feeling fresh and unique, by the time you finally finished the game, you'll be glad you are done with it's combat system. Often times, Boss Fights revolve around a marathon, in which you will not even be able to FINISH the fight until the enemy says everything they need to say, which can be frustrating at times, most bosses have a trick you need to figure out to defeat them, very few of them are straight forward fights.

Community: This is most likely one of my most biggest complaints with the game (next to the story). UnderTale has managed to collect some of the most obsessive, often times toxic fans in almost any fandom I have come across. Managing to collect the attention of furries, sexually confused individuals and SJWs, frothing, foaming at the mouths the fandom will defend the game to any end, often verbally eviscerating anyone who has anything remotely negative to say about UnderTale.

This is possibly one of the worst fandoms I have ever seen, ranking right next to Five Nights at Freddy's. Most users seeing I didn't rate UnderTale a solid 10 out of 10 will most likely rate this review as "unhelpful" without even reading the entire review.

Story: I will try not to spoil the game in this part of the review. Simply put, you are a child who has fallen underground, it is now your objective to make your way through the underground, trying to find your way home. As you progress through the game, you'll quickly discover that not everything happening here is quite as it appears to be. The underground has problems of it's own and you can take it upon yourself to try and solve these problems.

The story of UnderTale, while unique is possibly, one of the biggest issues I have with the game. Themes such as love, friendship and dedication are drilled into your head constantly.

You will also be judged based on your behavior while playing the game, which is what my problem is with the story. Kill any enemies and you'll be judged for it. The game acts as if any enemy deaths, no matter what, are a violation of the underground's citizens, completely ignoring the fact most (if not all) monsters are trying to either capture you or kill you.

I find it ironic, even asinine, that the game expects you to lay down your life for creatures, all who have an agenda that revolves around capturing or killing you. Very few of the relationships that you'll forge feel genuine in any extent. For a story about love, understanding and friendship, I found it hard to ever feel a real connection for any of the characters, let alone care about them.

The story is branching, there are three major branches in the game, all which will make changes to the game worth seeing. There are lesser branches to the game, but the content that changed is so minescual it isn't worth the effort of another play through. For these minor changes I suggest just using YouTube.

Conclusion: At the end of the day, Undertale is absolutely a game that is worth your time playing, rough spots and community aside. The game is short enough that you can fit a play through (or even multiple ones) in a day. The price is reasonable and I think supporting a developer such as Toby Fox is enough incentive itself to purchase the game.

Unique, amazing, and immersive as few games. This is not just a game, it's an experience. It's not that you can play it, you MUST play it. This is the kind of game that plays with your decisions and your prejudices, and gives you an unforgettable experience. In other words, go play it. You won't regret.

I guess I can see why people like this game so much, but personally I have found most parts either boring or frustrating. Other than his two-word review, I knew absolutely nothing about the game or the high praise it received from most reviewers and players.

This is probably the best way to experience a game like Undertale, as much of its WOW Factor supposedly relies on the story and how the player interacts with the game's world or characters. Whether heart-breaking or hilarious, most of these parts are well executed. The major problem is that the bulk of the game, puzzle solving and RPG elements, tend to be awfully boring and repetitive. Puzzles which take place outside of battle are very uninspired and mostly seem to be a case of trial and error, or repeating a certain pattern. Those which do occur in battle sequences are funny at first, but quickly wore thin when I realised I had to repeat the same process several times depending on which enemy I encountered. I have not even been able to force myself to complete one play through. Some people may say that I since I haven't completed the game I shouldn't be writing a review, but if the game truly bored me to the point at which I no longer want to play it, then I regard that as a serious problem.

Undertale is quite short, so I've heard, but since player choices influence the story, several different endings and outcomes can arise from in-game decisions. While this may seem like a good idea on paper and works well in other games, for me it just created a sense of constant paranoia. The game constantly usurps common assumptions and tropes of the RPG-genre, and this sometimes works to humorous effect. However, that also means it is not clear which decisions will influence the play-through, which decisions won't, and which decisions actually have a required answer/action in order for the story to progress. Of course, it would be easier if it were possible to predict the consequences of your actions, but in a fantasy, convention-defying world such as the one presented in Undertale, doing so is extremely difficult. But! If I make a mistake, then surely I can just reload my old save file, and start the section over, right? Wrong! Undertale actually remembers if you reload your file in some cases, so whether you like it or not, you may be stuck with the adverse effects of a previous mis-click or accidental push of a button for the entirety of your playthrough. All-in-all I found this choice-making aspect of the game very flawed and more frustrating than enjoyable.

That is not to say Undertale is all bad, not in any sense, and '6' is not a bad score. The music is absolutely superb. Although, I found the retro style graphics and music clash with pieces that are more orchestral. The game really does ooze atmosphere despite its graphical style. Furthermore, regular enemy encounters are great fun the first time around, and most of the Boss Battles are so ingeniously hilarious or touching that I would still recommend you give the Undertale a try. It really does show some innovative game design, and the interactions with the main cast of characters are the most enjoyable part of the Undertale for me. Unfortunately, it is the dull process of getting to the good parts that takes up most of the game. I also find the game's story and pacing to be very slow, which is fine if the game play is fun, but it most cases it just isn't. Furthermore, once you've figured out the trick to beating a certain boss or enemy, having to repeat the process if you die can feel very repetitive. Not every joke or fourth-wall breaking effect is funny and sometimes rub off as rather annoying. The level of importance or outcome of different decisions is never really clear until it's too late, and in my opinion this takes away most of the fun that should have come from these segments.

Overall, Undertale is a great, but seriously flawed, game that I would recommend to fans of RPGs. As someone who loved Chrono Trigger, a superb RPG with multiple endings, and also story-driven games like Ace Attorney, I'm disappointed I don't love this game as well. Unfortunately, for me, Undertale's gameplay is rather lacklustre is most parts, and there are not enough occasions when the game is engaging or fun. Maybe it suits you down to the ground like the hundreds of others who gave this game 10/10, just be aware it might not be for everyone

One of the best games I've ever played. It provides small touching pieces of text with each object you interact with. It's emotionally moving from it's characters to it's response to the player's actions. There are very few games that I would recommend more than this one.

First off, the games pacing. Undertale keeps great pacing for most of the game, and is exciting and well driven by its characters. However, the games pace slows to a grinding halt in the third act, when your thrown into a volcano and get stopped every 5 seconds by a "lol so nerdy" scientist. THIS SECTION DESTROYS THE PACING. This game has so many amazing scenes and set pieces, and comes crashing down at this one spot.

Next, the characters. I wont lie, this game has so amazing character development. Characters are complex, interesting, and well made. My biggest complaint comes in undyne, a fish women who, after I fought, crawled away. I shrugged this off but after completing the game and looking up videos found this character has a whole side quest, completely unknown to me that in order to find required you to backtrack to a specific village and have a conversation with.

Speaking of side quests, they seem oddly out of place in a game like this. A game like this feels like it should be alot more focused and the characters should be more involved. This is done fantastically with the skeletons, but all other characters seem to lack this focus. I didn't look for side quests when I played, and I ended up missing a couple of interesting areas.

Now for the game play. Its oddly enough a bullet hell, and works fairly well as one. the morality system is well made, but can be confusing in certain fights that require a very specific pattern in order to succeed, and some that you don't know if you need to keep talking to or if there is another solution to the problem (undyne and toriel come to mind). Its a good system though, and the morality system is very interesting.

I wont say much about the music. It is without a doubt the best part of the game. lots of memorable tracks that are either cozy and fitting, or well suited for the boss battles. easily a 10/10 soundtrack.

It feels shallow to say a game is bad because of the hype, but I do think the hype has taken a lot away from undertale. If you mention you plan to play it you will get a detailed map from the fanbase on what route to take, where to walk, how to spend your money, etc, etc. This game will be a lot better in a couple of years when hype has gone down and people can play the game blind.

In conclusion, expect a game that does a great job at making the characters, has a fun combat scheme that would get boring if the game lasted longer than it does, and a soundtrack that makes you remember how good retro music can be. Its by no means bad, but try not to buy too much into the hype. Besides, it wasn't event the best rpg maker game of 2015 (Lisa)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I shall preface this review with "I DON'T EVEN LIKE RPGS." Keep that it mind. Undertale is frankly a one-of-a-kind experience. Its storytelling is powerful and the paper-thinness of the fourth wall is amazingly creative. You'll grow to know and understand each and every character in the game (my favourite being Mettaton, as yours should be too) as you progress. For replay value, the game can be played two different ways, each of which has its own challenges. You can decide to NOT kill any monster you come across, which requires some outside thinking to end each conflict peacefully, or you can decide to go down the Genocide route which actually showcases the game's characters at their best - y'know, as they all join together to try to stop you killing the entire world, you monster. Overall, it's worth playing the game to see BOTH of these experiences - the Genocide ending gives fantastic battles, the most epic tracks in the OST and a subtle "TAKE THAT, **** at streamers (invaluable, really) while the Pacifist ending is the more... stomachable route with many genuinely funny moments and... a skeleton-dating sim. Well, that's all you can ask for, isn't it? Expand

Gameplay - Every encounter is a unique mix of bullet-hell and turn based dialogue. The fact that one can go through the entire game without fighting anyone is applaudable (and even encouraged in game).

Story - Outstanding. Although slow to build up, the story quickly grips you emotionally. It is absolutely encouraged to play the game pacifistically, and I would recommend this to anyone.

Story - Outstanding. Although slow to build up, the story quickly grips you emotionally. It is absolutely encouraged to play the game pacifistically, and I would recommend this to anyone. You will struggle to see the best in others, and because of that you will be rewarded by witnessing their vulnerabilities and flaws. The ending that this all culminates in is incredibly touching, and many moment may bring you to tears if you allow yourself to become invested in these characters lives. There is an insightful array of meta-narratives that put to question assumptions and conditioning people are put into from most video games. This is the only video game that has brought me to tears.

Art - While minimalistic, the art style is well used. Characters have just enough detail that their expressions and unique flair can be put succinctly on display. There is an interesting meld of several retro art styles, running the gamut between 8 and 32 bit pixel art. The art really isn't the focus of this tale, however, and while could have been tighter in some areas, did not seem like an area of improvement necessary to advance the narrative.

Sound - It shows that Toby Fox is a composer. The music, while not all 16-bit, has a consistent retro bent. Almost every character has their own theme, and this goes a long way into adding to their personalities. There's an old saying in the game development business that music is 50% of a game. If that is the case, Undertale has that half locked down.

I only have a few complaints. One is that the pacing in the early stages before exiting the first area of the game called the "Ruins" was a bit too slow, padded by a few too many puzzles and random encounters before catching up to what I would call the real story. Another is that there is perhaps not as much resolution in the default ending (although I can see why from a thematic reason this is the case, to encourage more play-throughs).

I have never understood why it's always the average games that explode. Flappy Bird, Five Nights at Freddy's, and now this. Yeah, I'm not going to make very many friends with this one. But let it be known I do not think this is a bad game. I just think it could have been so much more. To be fair, I've never liked RPGs. Yeah, I'm not going to make very many friends with this one. But let it be known I do not think this is a bad game. I just think it could have been so much more. To be fair, I've never liked RPGs. The only reason I even gave this a go was because I have two friends who are enamoured with it. So I was pretty hesitant to try it out. Lo and behold, I didn't think much of it. I did see it through to the end, though.

One of the game's main draws is that you're able to choose either a "Pacifist Route", or a "Genocide Route"; either using the ACT command to pacify foes through simply talking to them, or using the FIGHT command to slaughter foes. I knew about this going in and as such I was ready to do a Genocide Route because I figured I'd have more fun that way... until I learned that the Genocide Route involves near-constant grinding as one is required to defeat every monster in a given area. After learning this I was particularly soured and ended up just clearing through the game only fighting enemies I encountered naturally, which the game considers a "Neutral Route". Sure, the clue was in the title, but after seeing that the Pacifist Route involves no grinding whatsoever it's hard not to feel jealous. And no, I'm not going back to play through the entire game as a Pacifist just to skip grinding, that would be silly. to do on a game I don't like.

Its "heartwarming" characters I found more irritating than charming (with the possible exception of Sans and Papyrus). Its "unique" gameplay I felt was an unstable mash of an RPG and a "bullet hell" shooter that demanded the use of a controller due to constant spikes in difficulty. The story was clichéd with most of the "twists" being fairly predictable (there's one in particular that doesn't even affect one if they are playing on the Genocide Route), and the humor was hit-and-miss, most of which being references or "random" humor, both of which I despise.
There's also nostalgic pandering to other quirky RPG games, such as Earthbound and... yeah, that's about it. I have a feeling the reason most people like this game so much is because it follows in Earthbound's steps so much you may as well just call it a sequel with a frustrating bullet hell game attached.

That being said, the soundtrack is phenomenal, with many varied genres and styles. I've added a lot of the songs to my music playlist on YouTube, because holy hell, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a soundtrack nearly as much as this one.

In short, if you like RPGs, give it a go. I have a feeling this is just a game that wasn't for me, and that's fine. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go build a bunker. This game has a fanbase that's mostly rooted in tumblr, and God knows they're all nutters over there.

I still ended up feeling hollow when it was over. I wanted more, but I suppose all good things must come to an end.

The downsides can be that the game can be very hard and frustrating, and solutions are sometimes so obscured that they don't feel like an option. It sometimes sort of tells you that you cannot do a thing, and the solution is to do just that thing. But in the end, those things are all worth it.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
