When I first saw this game, it looked interesting, but It didn't look ten out of ten worth. I thought that the spare or kill mechanic was just a useless gimmick, but it was an interesting idea, and I eventually decided to buy the game.

Oh, I was so wrong. This game blew my mind. All of the characters are so memorable, and they all feel so real. On my first run, I killed a few important characters, and I regretted that decision as time went on. Killing important characters drastically changes the game, but that wasn't the real reason I regretted taking these character's digital lives. The real reason was, I legitimately cared for the characters.

So, on my second run, not only did Flowey (A Character you meet at the beginning of the game) dare me to kill no one, but I also dared myself. This lead to the "True Pacifist" Ending, in which brought so many different emotions. Real emotion. I don't want to say too much though, because this game is best experienced not knowing much.

I have recently done a "Genocide" run, in which you kill everything. You actually kill so many monsters, that you can't get random encounters anymore. It felt horrible killing these characters. The weird unsettling way the protagonist acted just added to this horrible feeling. As you kill, NPCs begin to disappear from towns, which just has this overall lonely tone. In contrast to the "Pacifist" Run, where there is humor oozing out of the walls, and all the characters act and feel like real friends; the "Genocide" Run is like a different game.

As for the other stuff, the music is gorgeous, and while the gameplay itself is really simplistic, it is still both fun and interesting. The multiple endings are really amazing as well. The writing is some of the best writing I have seen in my entire life. The humor is great too, although it is a very quirky humor, so some may not appreciate it as much as others.

The characters, and writing and where the game excels. Humorous, or should I say Humerus, quirky jokes, with great characters that are memorable and evoke real emotion. There are two characters I have to talk about though, and those characters are, Sans and Papyrus. I know for a fact, that I will never forget them in a million years, because not only do they cause the most laughs throughout the game, but they feel like real friends. There are so many things that make them memorable, Papyrus is a spaghetti fanatic, Sans eats ketchup, Papyrus says "Nyeh heh heh" a lot, Sans says the worst puns ever, which funnily enough makes them the best puns ever, and so much more. I don't want to say anymore though, meeting these characters without knowing their best traits makes it a great experience.

With the price of $10 on Steam, you just have to buy this game. I am not going to forget this game, and neither will you.

I had pretty low expectations from Undertale as I bought it before much of the media blitz.

Both pacifist and "genocide" routes have good stories (and actually very different stories), but pacifist is easier for a first timer, which you'll want as it's a moderately difficult game. If you find yourself unable to complete the game due to difficulty, look up how to get temmie armor (looking that up may contain minor non-story spoilers).

Nearly every character you come across actually has a story behind them you can find at some point in the game (although you have to dig for some of them).

Easily the best game I've ever played.

I probably listen to at least one song from the soundtrack the day I finished it. The gameplay is exciting and challenging, but ultimately a fair fight each time despite what some people say about certain bosses. Everything about this game is spot on. And if you think for a second that this game is receiving "paid reviews", keep in mind that this game was made by just two people and a Kickstarter. Can one honestly think for a second that these people have the resources capable of pulling in so many positive reviews in a short amount of time? It would be highly unreasonable to think so, and a damn shame considering how much this game moved me.
I won't say any more, I refuse to. Get out there and experience this for yourself, you won't regret it. And when you do, how about actually beating the damn game and then judging it?

The game takes advantage of being a game and does things only a game can do. By breaking down the game or using the fact that it's a game to it's advantage, it breaks the innocence you always feel the game is, that is mainly because of the art style. It's better than Earthbound, which has a lot of grind and the jokes get a bit boring (and then the game is a bit weird at the end - still like Earthbound though). In Undertale, the makers continually screw with you and your expectations built from the history of RPGs, which is awesome. I couldn't try playing another MMO without thinking about this game.

The negatives seem to be about simple puzzles - they miss the point - the puzzles were just a navigation, a way point. This is not a game about nostalgia but about challenging your expectations. In a way, your game play will also give you a reflection of yourself. Other negs: the trailer tells you a superficial (but necessarily superficial) view of the game. The graphics are simple, but you get used to them. A good book is not based on its typeface, and a good game shouldn't be based on graphics.

The story writing is clever, light hearted, fun and never comes across as preachy. I was having so much fun and becoming so immersed, that I let my guard down, and suddenly realized that I genuinely cared about the characters, and I cared about consequences of my choices. The game often stays in my thoughts long after I've finished playing for the day.

Undertale is advertised as an "RPG where you don't have to destroy anyone", but Undertale is not a game about tiptoeing through the tulips with your newly made friends. There are difficult, grim decisions that you need to make, and some of the consequences can't be undone EVER, even by deleting or restarting the game. There were also times that the game made a complete 180 when I wasn't expecting it and left me feeling very disturbed, unsettled, and just saying "Wow". We've become so accustomed and desensitized to all the usual video game tropes, that it's hard for a new game to evoke this kind of emotion. I give Undertale lots of credit for being able to do this so well, with so little (small file size, simple graphics, and being mostly created by one person).

Like most games, you are in control of a character, but Undertale often breaks the 4th wall and also acknowledges YOU (the player) as another character in the game. Undertale may not be the first game to do this, but it's one of the best.

There are lots of secrets, sub plots and interesting variations to discover. Lots of replayability potential. This is an RPG, but there is no grinding, back-tracking, or wasting time. Every moment was designed to be enjoyable or purposeful. Toby has taken the RPG genre, deconstructed it, and created something very unique and fresh here. There was so much thought and depth put into this game, it's unbelievable that this was created mostly just by one person.

Also need to mention that the soundtrack is fantastic. There are something like 77 quality songs in the Undertale OST, so the music never gets stale. I read somewhere that Toby would write the music first and then create a scene/level for the game to match the music. This really helps with the continuity/immersion/mood of the game.

There's already a lot of hype about this game, but I don't care; I just had too much damn fun playing it. This is easily now my favorite game this year. I hope that you get to enjoy it too.

Its a nice departure from the tried and true formula of those games and still being able to very much tug at your heartstrings.

Is it any of those older games? No. But it doesn't really try to be. It's pretty easy to play, its fun, and thats really it. What more could you want for something like $10?

The storytelling in this game is an absolute masterclass. Character development, plot and mechanics are perfectly in harmony to tell an at times hilarious, occasionally terrifying and sometimes gut wrenching story. The game is extremely creative with its combat mechanics, has a very fitting disregard for the fourth wall, and the world building makes a relatively small place feel enormous. The musical score is gorgeous, and the visuals, a little rough around the edges, are for the most part very good.

Even if you normally detest JRPGs (which I do, and which Undertale is very much in the style of), do not miss this one.

The most unique part of this game is that if you have the option of either defeating an enemy, or sympathizing with it and letting Toriel take care of it. That may seem like a stupid idea, but you get different endings depending on whether you attacked enemies or went through the game as a Pacifist. The writing, the characters, the story, the gameplay, the boss battles, everything about this game is executed so well. Many AAA games today work so hard to make a game immersive, charming and overall perfect; while I won't point fingers, Undertale is the true definition of perfect. There isn't a single thing that I can say bad about this game, it's seriously that good. The only nit-picks I have are minor, and I don't think they're worth talking about. If you are thinking about buying this game, my answer is an absolute yes. 9.99 is the perfect amount for this work of art.

    Undertale gets a 10/10.

A little over-hyped by the community around it, but that isn't the game's fault. Still a solid 10/10 especially taking into account its short playtime and low price. Definitely a game worth experiencing. While many players may be shut off by the very simplistic nature and beginning of the game, it is generally a very lighthearted and enjoyable game. The game has an oddly universal appeal depending on how deep you look into the game. You can find a lot of meat if you are looking for it, but it can also just be a quick and simple game.

When trying to describe Undertale, the word "lovely" comes to mind a lot. If you fancy retro RPGs and all things lovely, you'll love this game. If playing something that can be described as lovely sounds absolutely horrid to you (so in other words if you're a total killjoy in life), you'll probably not enjoy this game so much.

To compare it to anything, it will be War for the Overworld to Dungeon Keeper 2 - a good game, but you know throughout that everything it is doing is borrowing pretty much everything from another title.

I'd have scored this higher if they'd brought the premise of the game into 2015 with an updated graphic style and a few compelling twists on the genre, but it by and large does not.

So yeah - a really nice homage, a great play if you enjoyed the titles this one pretty much apes in every way, but a few people have gone really OTT on the praise for the title in my opinion.

+AMAZING finger-snapping soundtrack that blends 8 bit and 16 bit MIDI of the past with the recorded instrumentals of today, to create something nostalgic yet fresh and never-before-heard.
+Well-written, witty dialogue and likeable characters.
+Deep, extremely meta storyline that will tear you apart guaranteed.
    +Sweet, dark, and funny.
+Simple graphics that belie the true nature of the game.
+Innovative hybrid gameplay where your actions will have consequences, even across playthroughs.
+Chock-full of secrets that nobody's found yet as of this writing, much more to see past the main story if you have the patience to find it.
    +Hella replay value.
    +Nightmare fuel!!
And if you care about this stuff...
    +Canon lesbian couple.
    +Canon gender-neutral protagonist.

-Rather short, a playthrough can take 4-6 hours.
-One path is rather tedious, but the lore it contains is worth it IMHO.
-You will never want to leave.

I always said to people that Mass Effect is my favourite game of all time. It now has very strong competition. If not the world's most perfect game, it's definitely worth considering when the time comes to pick the year's best.

Same thing with the plot, at times it got me excited and curious, and at other times it got me bored thinking it was dragging on too much.

    --

This game has moved me like no game ever before it, even those few I hold precious to me - this game is at once nostalgic yet unrelentingly modern, culturally a product of our times but with the trappings of older games at first glance. I desperately want to replay it, yet the game itself leaves me in a such a state I'm not sure I can. It has been several days since I completed it, and it still holds a ludicrously powerful emotional sway over me, something incredibly uncharacteristic for me. It's genuinely overwhelming, to the point I can't write this review as an analytical or objective thing - it's a moving work. It'll challenge your notions of what constitutes a game. It's genuinely funny and genuinely sad. It's a piece of art that surpasses anything I could have dreamt of. At times it is languid and calm, at times rapid and exciting - it dabbles with reference humour, but never indulges in it. It pulls no cheap tricks besides music - and if music to inspire the emotions is cheating, then this game cheats extraordinarily well.

I can't carry on right now, so I'm just going to throw this 'review' out there as it is - an emotional impression of the game by someone left enraptured, blissed and devastated by it.

This game really surprised me, I did not hear of this game before its release and I really did not think I would enjoy it. I never really liked RPG type games but this game is absolutely astonishing and has brought a amazing take on the RPG genre. Before you read more about this game you should really play it first because it WILL change your perception on games and maybe even life itself. Its got beautifully simple retro graphics and one of the best sound tracks I've ever heard in my life (Even though it is just chiptune music).

The fighting mechanic is what really sets this game apart since you don't have to murder anybody and the world around you will change in a variety of different ways which will leave you feeling guilty or proud of yourself. The game also has an un-necessary amount of detail, almost everything in the game world has a few lines written about it when you interact with it.

This game is absolutely full of moments will will leave you in tears and laughing for a long time, and will change your playstyle for all other games. It has the best replay value I have ever seen in a game and it will leave you hooked for a long time, forcing you to try and find all the little secrets the game has. This game puts ALL other AAA games to shame and is made by an indie developer with 1/1000th of a budget that a normal developer has, and still manages to blow them out of the water.

Play this game, I guarantee you will have a tonne of fun

If you possess any measure of empathy or compassion to connect with the games you play, this game will pay back your emotional investment in its world and characters back a thousandfold.

But even if you don't, and play games like a detached sociopath plays with a box of toys, deriving joy by tearing apart what others have lovingly built, it has you covered as well, you lucky devils.

The graphics, although unusual seeming at first, really begin to grow on you as you continue playing, to the point where now, I can't even imagine any other way it could have been done.
The music is excellent, wonderfully composed, like the game itself, running the spectrum of joyful mirth, fierce conflict, and beautiful despair.
The gameplay is innovative and well balanced. Going the non-combat route is absolutely recommended if you are interested in game design.

It may be one of the best uses for 10 dollars right now. Period.

The music is also beautifully composed, so much so you'll be humming the tunes from it all day long. All in all, Undertale is incredible. Please go play it for yourself. Expand

Amazing game, extremely emotional experience. Unfortunate that people are rating it "0" to troll.

Extremely character driven. The OST is godlike and even surpasses that of LISA. Play it, and you will not regret it.

I've been playing games and, specifically JRPGs, for a good 10 or so years of my life. I've played Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, and all the highest rated JRPGs of all time. Even still, nothing prepared me for Undertale.

At the surface, it has simplistic graphics which might not impress some. The demo is cute and fun, but it might feel like the game doesn't improve

Everything you do matters. If you want to be friends with everyone, you can enjoy a very pure hearted and sweet experience. If you feel like a cold blooded killer, your actions will have consequences. It truly puts your morality to the test and will make you question your own humanity.

If you really want to, you can try the genocide run. But you're going to have a bad time.

This game made me feel feelings I haven't felt for a game for more than 10 years. A game that brought tears to my eyes and made me feel heartbroken at the end, but also happy. Bittersweet in a sense.

It's chock-filled with likable, memerable and friendly characters. Characters you'd wish were real, characters you wish you could just jump right into that world and hug and stay with.

It may be hard to believe such a statement when the graphics of this game are so simplistic, don't ever let the graphics of this game take you away from it.

The music is quite akin to that of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and what's more is that it uses the main theme in over songs just like PMD too. The music plays an absolutely ginormous role in this game, and for those of you that have been to the location that plays the song 'Undertale', yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Throat closes up even listening to it while writing this.

The game is quite short, you could finish it in a day. But it's not the length of the game that matters, it's the experience. It's the experience you yourself as a person, as an individual, as a player and as a character in the world of Undertale, that is what matters. This game will suck you in, this game will make you laugh, this game will make you cry, this game will make you think, and most importanly this game will teach you that fighting is not always the answer.

This game needs attention, it needs to be noticed by all those who enjoy games, it's beautiful. It's easily indie game of the year in my opinion, and is my absolute 100% game of the year.

Play Undertale. You won't regret it.

-Lackluster graphics, kind of inconsistent as they're clearly made by two different artists
    -Very lacking animations
-Genocide route is VERY tedious and grindy
-Inconsistent difficulty - the game is too easy most of the time, rarely challenging, and mostly trial-and-error at one point
-The writing majorly consists of cheap pop culture references and poor jokes
-Puzzles are too few and too simple
-Random encounters provide only annoyance, as they aren't at all challenging or fun to deal with after the first time
    -Progression is very linear
    -Short

Overall, a unique take on RPG games, but ultimately a waste of potential because of poor execution. I feel like the charm of this game clouds people's judgement.

I kept seeing this game mentioned / pictures online and I didn't understand the excitement about it, until actually playing it. I didn't hear it was earthbound like - but it did have similar elements - but elements greater than just being a "earthbound rip-off/homage"

This game is truly a marvel in this day and age. I haven't played a game with such creative writing or unique personalities in quite a long time. THIS goes to show you - that you don't need super HD graphics to have a good game. Just good story telling! This is not to say the game play isn't good - This game revolutionizes RPGs by taking long slow time based systems and turn them into active battle systems, and throughout the game constantly levels up the difficulty in fun and unique ways! Otherwise it runs like a normal RPG, with basic but solid controls

    Mechanics: 10/10

The music is just great. There are happy songs, epic songs, scary songs, even just background noise. It's simplistic, but for a game that you can beat in 3-5 hours, it has over 100 songs.

    Sound: 10/10

The graphics are often said to be weak. They're sprites, and although I must say that the main hero's sprite is pretty weak - there are a lot of other really really cool sprites. I mean, this was all done by 1-3 people, so it's quite impressive. Also, there's a LOT of black in the game - which REALLY sets a heavy mood - especially for dark or emotional moments which makes up for some of the simplistic backgrounds. It's all about emotional mood setting.

    Graphics: 9/10

As for Gameplay, it's a short game. Almost disappointingly short at 3-5 hours. There's a TON to do however, and requires you to replay it if you want to enjoy the game in more depth. Because it's so short, this makes it super easy to replay it over and over - and do choices / see things you didn't get to do in the first game. With such a character driven story - it definitely made me play through it about 2-3 times due to empathizing with a lot of the characters. Some people are whining about how easy the puzzles are - but this game isn't here to put impossibly difficult puzzles to stop game play- it's only to progress the story of dumb puzzles made by dumber (but lovable) characters. If you think games should be so frustratingly hard - then you don't truly enjoy video games or good story telling.

    Game Play: 10/10

Overall, I really enjoyed this game. I can understand that it's not a game for everyone, especially people who dislike RPGs or people who dislike mentally stimulating games, but in a sea of games that are nothing but visual graphics - I would highly recommend this game if you want a game that is MORE than just swinging a sword around by mashing forward and A for 30 hours, or sneaking around and doing the same thing over and over - then pick up undertale. With it being only 10 dollars, it would be a waste NOT to buy it. Thanks taking the time to read my simple review.

    Overall: 10/10

I'm someone who has no nostalgia for pixel graphics, being someone who grew up in the ps1 era of games, nor have I ever played Earthbound, yet the graphics of this game were utterly charming to me.

I came into this game the day it came out because a friend supported the kickstarter and brought it to my attention. I had no expectations when starting it up, and I was completely blown away.

It has been almost a month since I've played, and I still can't get the experience of this game out of my head.

I know it may not be for everyone, being a pixelated game with RPG and Tohou elements to it, but it is so obvious how much love was put into this game. Never have I experienced something so pure before, something that broke the fourth wall in such creative ways. I thought Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid was special, but this was miles above for me.

Every boss brings something new to the table, the puzzle element of figuring out what you have to do in order to spare the creatures is invigorating, and it reminds me of the talking with demons in Shin Megami Tensei without the luck involved.

Toby's aptitude for writing both good characters and good music is astounding, I will be remembering those names and songs for the rest of my gaming life I imagine. For the first time I actually felt like a kid again, entranced by every new face I met and the vibrant personalities they had.

Your enjoyment of this game will probably hinge on whether you enjoy the characters the game throws at you and how much you'll enjoy the puzzle element of trying to spare monsters.

I would go into further detail, list the things certain bosses or enemies do to you, or special story scenes that really pack a punch, but that would dampen the experience.

In my opinion, this is easily in the top 3 games I've ever played, and the experience and memories I have of it will stick with me for a very long time, I can only hope that the game can touch you in the way it's touched me and hundreds of others.

Honestly, one of the worst RPGs of all time. It copies from better games (Earthbound, Shin Megami Tensei, NieR, Final Fantasy VI), the characters are one-note idiots. The story is nothing spectacular, as is the music. There are huge difficulty spikes. It isn't even good-looking pixel-art and it throws morals down your throat. Do not waste your money on this

The scant information I have on quick observation of the game, after not seeing what the big deal is, is ultimately that it has great humor and a great soundtrack. It also appears to be one of the few games the internet is unanimously trying to avoid spoiling.

But beware, if you choose to FIGHT... You're gonna have a bad time.

Also. I noticed a lot of negative reviews claiming that people are being paid to post positive reviews. Aside from this being insulting to the fans of the game, it also shows a fundamental lack of understanding of Toby Fox's (The main developer of Undertale) financial situation.

Have a look at the Steam store page, and then try to tell me that the 16,431 (as of this writing) positive reviews have all be paid by Toby Fox, a guy who until recently was only known for his musical works for the Homestuck comic series.

This is not some AAA game that is paying for perfect reviews from PCGamer and IGN. This is a legitimately well designed and now well loved game.

If you don't like the game, you are welcome to your opinion. But don't try to belittle the opinions of others by spreading bulls**t about them.

That being said, this game has a great cast of lovable characters who each still have their flaws and missteps (except Papyrus, Papyrus is damn near perfect) fantastic music that anyone can appreciate but will especially get 8-bit fans excited, unique battle system that essentially is where you decide what ending you will get and wonderful little meta nuggets and fourth wall breaking features done in the best way possible. It's Metal Gear Solid 2 levels of meta at times, and one part in particular goes even beyond that...And the part I adore the most, it's a complete package. Almost every question you can ask can be answered by some part in the game, it's been a long time since a game offered such a tight, held together story in my memory.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
