Along with the fantastic scene building by using excellent audio cues and perspective switching.

I don't ever remember being this satisfied from a game I've purchased. I highly regret not being a part of Undertale's original Kick Starter.

Thank you Toby Fox, and all other artists who developed this Master Piece. Everything from the Game Design, Artwork, Music, Character Design, Dialogue, Scenario Scripting, to Everything. And thank everything who saw the amazing potential in Undertale to have supported it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About every game I played about RPG from earthbound to chronno Trigger tis is the first one hwo actually show you a option to not fight. Yes you can fight but it not necessary, and the game is incredible about this way you don't need to fight and if I go to deep on this it will be spoiler but, the way that the game use this it's amazing.

In the begining I sincerely killed inocent monster or good guys, so when i realize that wasn't necessary I reset my save so I could start all over again, then it was the surprise, and I realized that was more than a game. This is the best spiritual successor to earthbound.

ps: At the end of the game you will **** your pants so prepare to something more disturbing than Giyas.

I'm someone who has no nostalgia for pixel graphics, being someone who grew up in the ps1 era of games, nor have I ever played Earthbound, yet the graphics of this game were utterly charming to me.

I came into this game the day it came out because a friend supported the kickstarter and brought it to my attention. I had no expectations when starting it up, and I was completely blown away.

It has been almost a month since I've played, and I still can't get the experience of this game out of my head.

I know it may not be for everyone, being a pixelated game with RPG and Tohou elements to it, but it is so obvious how much love was put into this game. Never have I experienced something so pure before, something that broke the fourth wall in such creative ways. I thought Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid was special, but this was miles above for me.

Every boss brings something new to the table, the puzzle element of figuring out what you have to do in order to spare the creatures is invigorating, and it reminds me of the talking with demons in Shin Megami Tensei without the luck involved.

Toby's aptitude for writing both good characters and good music is astounding, I will be remembering those names and songs for the rest of my gaming life I imagine. For the first time I actually felt like a kid again, entranced by every new face I met and the vibrant personalities they had.

Your enjoyment of this game will probably hinge on whether you enjoy the characters the game throws at you and how much you'll enjoy the puzzle element of trying to spare monsters.

I would go into further detail, list the things certain bosses or enemies do to you, or special story scenes that really pack a punch, but that would dampen the experience.

In my opinion, this is easily in the top 3 games I've ever played, and the experience and memories I have of it will stick with me for a very long time, I can only hope that the game can touch you in the way it's touched me and hundreds of others.

People who hate on this game mostly say
    A. It has pixel art-style graphics: Seriously? It's a game. You play it for gameplay and the experience, not pretty lights to stare at in mesmerized wonder.
    B. It leans on Earthbound for its style: For what? its art style? The commentary on the nature of RPGs that Earthbound didn't have? The plot Earthbound didn't have? The multiple endings that Earthbound didn't have? Its now-res graphics and chiptune music? Or maybe just how you use mundane objects as items? The only similarities are in surface perception, not the actual game and how it's designed.
    C. It takes a long time: Really? It's an RPG, all of which are inherently long, and Undertale is a relatively short one at that, taking only 5-8 hours to complete one ending.
    D. The game has poor dialog and plot: In comparison to what, Moby Dick? It's a game, and every line was made to be exactly like what it is; in a game. Not only that, but it has secrets revealing even more to the already spectacular plot, in a quantity comparable to the massive tower of hidden lore, FNAF

    So, um...

Undertale is good, alright? It's a good game!

Definitely a game worth experiencing. While many players may be shut off by the very simplistic nature and beginning of the game, it is generally a very lighthearted and enjoyable game. The game has an oddly universal appeal depending on how deep you look into the game. You can find a lot of meat if you are looking for it, but it can also just be a quick and simple game.

The storytelling in this game is an absolute masterclass. Character development, plot and mechanics are perfectly in harmony to tell an at times hilarious, occasionally terrifying and sometimes gut wrenching story. The game is extremely creative with its combat mechanics, has a very fitting disregard for the fourth wall, and the world building makes a relatively small place feel enormous. The musical score is gorgeous, and the visuals, a little rough around the edges, are for the most part very good.

Even if you normally detest JRPGs (which I do, and which Undertale is very much in the style of), do not miss this one.

I was a really big Mother 1 and Earthbound fan growing up, so I pay attention when a game gets compared to one of them. It is my opinion that Undertale deserves much of it's praise in that regard, as it does a pretty well job of nailing the happy go lucky aloofness along with some darker themes.

Oh, and the boss fights are pretty **** rad. Not sure what else to say, if you are mildly curious check out the demo, it is a pretty sizeable jaunt and can give you a good idea what to expect.

I clocked in about 10 hours after getting 2 of the endings, but I won't spoil any more.

    - The $ - Hour comparison is WAY OFF, even if you played it twice or even three times to get the "good ending"

This game was just way overhyped by media like tumblr and such for its "quirkiness and level of alternativity" and it's supposed creative art style and the PC focus of combat being bad.

This game is just not very good. The puzzles are awful - in one you explored a room step by step, never knowing when you were going to fall through an "invisible" hole. Once you did, the hole was marked on the map, and you had to climb back upstairs and go through the room again trying a new step in a different direction - until the entire floor is explored. Sound fun? It isn't. Graphics are mediocre, combat is one one worst systems I have ever seen (You stand in a box and "bullets" fly at you and you dodge them. That's it.) and the sound is also so so.

So why is it getting so many high reviews? I don't know. It's almost like someone is performing a viral marketing experiment. The system seems to be being gamed. Negative reviews are being deleted. I wonder how long this one will stay up?

At first glance this game looks like one of the thousands of other RPG or topdown nostalgic themed indie games that manage to get past steams almost non-existent floodgates, and upon playing it only for a little, it may seem like that. But getting further and further into this game you begin to realise how much of an amazing game it really is. I personally began to grow attached to the amazingly well developed and likeable characters and the innocent, lighthearted humour, but also began to delve deeper into an interesting plot. I somewhat don't understand the negative reviews for this game and do not see at all what they're talking about in terms of their criticisms, but each to their own I guess. This creates three main choices for how you play the game, pacifist(no kills), neutral (some kills, some spares) and genocide(kill everything). I kept seeing this game mentioned / pictures online and I didn't understand the excitement about it, until actually playing it. I didn't hear it was earthbound like - but it did have similar elements - but elements greater than just being a "earthbound rip-off/homage"

This game is truly a marvel in this day and age. I haven't played a game with such creative writing or unique personalities in quite a long time. THIS goes to show you - that you don't need super HD graphics to have a good game. Just good story telling! This is not to say the game play isn't good - This game revolutionizes RPGs by taking long slow time based systems and turn them into active battle systems, and throughout the game constantly levels up the difficulty in fun and unique ways! Otherwise it runs like a normal RPG, with basic but solid controls

    Mechanics: 10/10

The music is just great. There are happy songs, epic songs, scary songs, even just background noise. It's simplistic, but for a game that you can beat in 3-5 hours, it has over 100 songs.

    Sound: 10/10

The graphics are often said to be weak. They're sprites, and although I must say that the main hero's sprite is pretty weak - there are a lot of other really really cool sprites. I mean, this was all done by 1-3 people, so it's quite impressive. Also, there's a LOT of black in the game - which REALLY sets a heavy mood - especially for dark or emotional moments which makes up for some of the simplistic backgrounds. It's all about emotional mood setting.

    Graphics: 9/10

As for Gameplay, it's a short game. Almost disappointingly short at 3-5 hours. There's a TON to do however, and requires you to replay it if you want to enjoy the game in more depth. Because it's so short, this makes it super easy to replay it over and over - and do choices / see things you didn't get to do in the first game. With such a character driven story - it definitely made me play through it about 2-3 times due to empathizing with a lot of the characters. Some people are whining about how easy the puzzles are - but this game isn't here to put impossibly difficult puzzles to stop game play- it's only to progress the story of dumb puzzles made by dumber (but lovable) characters. If you think games should be so frustratingly hard - then you don't truly enjoy video games or good story telling.

    Game Play: 10/10

Overall, I really enjoyed this game. I can understand that it's not a game for everyone, especially people who dislike RPGs or people who dislike mentally stimulating games, but in a sea of games that are nothing but visual graphics - I would highly recommend this game if you want a game that is MORE than just swinging a sword around by mashing forward and A for 30 hours, or sneaking around and doing the same thing over and over - then pick up undertale. With it being only 10 dollars, it would be a waste NOT to buy it. Thanks taking the time to read my simple review.

    Overall: 10/10

The only thing that can do this game justice is that you, whoever is reading this review, go and play the game yourself. This games essence can't be captured simply by reading a review or looking at screenshots.

Let's start off with: This game was meant strongly for the story and characters and isn't meant for everyone.

I've read all the "bad" reviews, both logical and both just pure hate with no reason. I'm not an extreme fanboy with no reason behind my love for Undertale. I have my reasons and here is my very detailed assessment. In Undertale, there's no interestingly fun wall jumping

In Undertale, there's no interestingly fun wall jumping mechanics like what you'd find in Super Meat Boy. There's no mind bending puzzles that keep you addicted and playing a lot like Portal 2. There's no blinding lens flare or graphics that can let you see each individual atom in this game like in DriveClub or Battlefield 4 that makes you feel like you're in real life. The reason for this is that these features were never the priority in Undertale.

Many people are unable to realise that the lack of these features are part of what made the game so hyped and so well recognised in the first place. Instead of trying to be like every other successful AAA title just by following their footsteps and being overshadowed in the end, Undertale takes a completely different path to stand out so that there's nothing to become overshadowed by. People see Undertale up with the AAA titles and they tell themselves that it has to be special.

Graphics-wise. This is disregarded completely. Nostalgia isn't the only reason why the game has an old-school (or as the haters would call it, s***ty graphics) look to it. It's because it's simple, works and won't distract you from the story which is what the game was meant for. The game wants you to read its dialog and immerse yourself into the game. Instead of mimicking the real world we live in, it wants you to pretend you're inside the world of Undertale. Toby Fox has written a meticulous story and crafted a world littered with very memorable characters with different personalities. You can only fully appreciate this when you try to explore and fully complete the game twice. He wants you to listen to, weep to, laugh to, smile to and relate to the amazing story he has in return for the $9.99 you've paid for Undertale. He put the NES graphics not only because it gave a nostalgic feel for those who can actually feel it, but when it comes to those who can't, they would focus on the story and dialog rather than be immersed in the graphics.

To those who gave this game a 0 saying it didn't make you heartfelt at all. Either you:

A - Legitimately didn't in the sections of the game that tried to tinker with your emotions.
B - You tried to feel heartfelt from the totally wrong sections of the game.
C - You judged the game too early and never even tried to play the game the way it was meant to be played.

Hand over heart, I've genuinely shed tears during the true ending because it was actually relatable. The game's soundtrack enhanced the effect.

    From the gameplay standpoint:

People complain that the combat mechanic is boring and repetitive. People who say this don't understand how games work. Don't tell me shooting soldiers in COD, Battlefield and all war games is not repetitive. Don't tell me slaying zombies again and again in L4D2 isn't repetitive. Don't tell me random murder on the streets and drug dealing is not repetitive. Don't tell me going in tall grass in Pokemon and having to battle random Pokemon every single time isn't repetitive. The game is repetitive, no arguing about that BUT, Undertale manages to pull off this repetition very well

Why Undertale is so special in this aspect is WHAT happens within combat and NOT THE COMBAT ITSELF. When battling an opponent, you either kill the opponent and move on or you have to choose a series of "acts" where you sort of try to connect with the opponent to a point where they no longer want to fight. Read the dialog when you do this; soak it in and not just spam the skip button or you'll end up misjudging what was so intricately set up just for your money in the first place. Bloody hell, there's even a frog somewhere in the beginning that breaks the fourth wall, complaining about how he feels sad about people skipping a game's dialog. If you listen to it, he's happy and tells you that you're kind. Skip the frog's dialog and he labels you the same as the rest who doesn't appreciate the dialog written for the player. Toby Fox knows the kind of people who play his game.

Why am I giving this a 10? Because it's refreshing. People label this as a hipster game for it's pixelated graphics. I admit, I personally play and enjoy the AAA titles especially Battlefield 4 which to me, has excellent gameplay. But the reason why Undertale gets a 10 from me is because I've taken the time to play the game thoroughly and it perfectly fulfills not the gameplay aspect, but the experience and the story. It's brought funny moments and sad moments. Toby Fox has written the game's story so well and put so much effort into it that I personally believe that this game, while not the best in everything, deserves to be where it is now; up there.

Undertale is absolutely unique. It's a RPG masterpiece full of weird characters and a moving message.

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
