The storytelling in this game is an absolute masterclass. Character development, plot and mechanics are perfectly in harmony to tell an at times hilarious, occasionally terrifying and sometimes gut wrenching story. The game is extremely creative with its combat mechanics, has a very fitting disregard for the fourth wall, and the world building makes a relatively small place feel enormous. The musical score is gorgeous, and the visuals, a little rough around the edges, are for the most part very good.

Even if you normally detest JRPGs (which I do, and which Undertale is very much in the style of), do not miss this one.

This game, although initially confusing, might be the very best thing to come out this year. It certainly was the one I enjoyed most.

The flow of the game is so perfectly designed, you never feel like you're wasting your time at all. I dare anyone to pick their all-time favorite RPG and tell me it didn't at times seem boring. This game keeps the player entertained while allowing for peaceful moments in-between.

The tone of this game is somewhat weird. There's a sad story behind everything: a child lost in a world full of monsters, but at the same time, there's the realization that there's more to it than that. Every character has its own story, its own strengths and flaws, and the music and graphics provide the perfect atmosphere for them to develop.

Then there's the unexpected. Boy are you in for something. Or not. I really don't want to spoil anything, but just know you will find much, much more than what you think.

It won't take you more than an hour to get hooked, so go for it.

Charmingly , Fantastic. Like a good book you simply cant put down. You'll do anything to have things turn out perfectly. Innovative an interesting combat system, great characters you will love, LOVE, and hate. And best of all, not one has to get hurt in the end if you are truly determined.

theres just something about this game, its enchanting in a quirky and unassuming sort of way--yes it looks like potato graphics but it doesnt matter, the person who wrote this was obviously a deep and interesting sort--just like the game. somehow, it manages to suck you in and get stuck in your head.. the music is incredibly good and the whole experience is just weirdly compelling.

The scant information I have on quick observation of the game, after not seeing what the big deal is, is ultimately that it has great humor and a great soundtrack. It also appears to be one of the few games the internet is unanimously trying to avoid spoiling.

It is also currently ranked the 17th best PC game of all time on this site.

I was honestly wondering why this game was getting such high scores. From screenshots & gameplay it didn't really seem all that amazing. Well, this is one of those games that you really can't judge by it's cover. It's got so much more to it than what's present on the store page. I urge you to NOT go too deep into learning about the game because spoilers will probably ruin it for you. IfI was honestly wondering why this game was getting such high scores. I was also skeptical at first that I was not buying into a hipster game. i can say honestly, this game is fantastic., It's fresh,, it's comedic, and in many ways turns a regular RPG's on it's head,

It's also completely re-playable. You can play the game in two extreme ways (with a multitude of endings) and have an almost entirely different experience. It's the most enjoyment I've had

Also some of the music tracks are especially good.

If I had to highlight a criticism? Some of the graphics might not be to your taste and the game pace can be slow at times. However these are also positives for the majority. It's very hard to criticise.

    Pros:
    - Every character (enemies included) feels unique and important. No generic goblins or shopkeepers you usually get from normal RPGs.
    - The narrative is impressive. There are so many conflicts surrounding everything it feels touchable.
    - The music is amazing. It really adds to all situations.
    - All good games are all about the player. Undertale is a good game.

    Cons:
    - Gameplay-wise, you feel weightless in some battles, specially some boss battles. Some are just about re-choosing the same option, reading through the enemy's dialog and enduring the battle.

A terrific title you have to play at least twice to appreciate fully.
Really very hard to give reasons as many spoil the joy and surprises in store.
The story and it's characters (which are anything but shallow, I really do NOT understand that criticism) alone are a great reason to enjoy this.

Presentation - 10/10: perfectly crafted and expertly written with humor, references, parodies, and plenty of heartwarming, nostalgia-inducing, and chillingly creepy moments. A little on the short side but multiple endings (including absolutely brutal bosses on one of them) and overall memorability ensure you won't soon forget this game.

Gameplay - 9.5/10: The simple combat is clever and innovative, and the puzzles, while rather easy, still leave a sense of satisfaction upon completion.

Sound - 10/10: Superb soundtrack mixing various real and synth instruments over a variety of soundfonts, many of which reference other games.

If you allow it to, it flowers into a triumphant reconstruction of innocent wonder and joy that drove us towards games in the first place. Undertale is a masterpiece in the realm of media, not just gaming, and proof that artgames don't have to be aloof and opaque, and that games shouldn't be afraid to try to touch our hearts, that games can sometimes trust their players, can confidently hide their secrets in the negative space of what's left unsaid.

Enter: Undertale. A GameMaker game that might strike you as plain at first glance, holds nothing back to wow you at every opportunity.
Trekking through the opening area, you get a fairly basic premise of what to expect through and through. Along the way, you're showered in a veritable metric load of astonishing music, encounter dozens of monsters all with their own quirks, and the story develops into something else entirely.

I'm going to be completely honest, the path I took made me tear up, something pretty much no other game for a long time has accomplished, because even without Triple-A graphics or any voice acting, Undertale managed to paint up such a vivid and immersing world that I could not help but react to what was going on in the game.

And it's not a massive thing, either.
You could sit through the entire game in one marathon day, if you so wanted to.
But every little thing has such nuance to it that you're most likely going to be compelled to interact with everything.
And as you progress, things will continue on as you left them, to some degree.
If you desire to trek back, you're free to do so.

In short, the game doesn't have 'modern' graphics, but does a stellar job with what it gives.
The soundtrack is (in my opinion) worthy of an orchestral rendition, and the story and character development is endearing and really pulls you into the amazing world that is Undertale.

And, quite frankly, for that price, it's worth it thrice over.

It's not a perfect game. The graphics, while stylized well, are fairly simple. Depending on who you are the humor may fall a little flat or be grating -- but the sheer breadth of work accomplished by (largely) one person is astounding. It has the most entertaining battle system I've seen in an RPG since the Mario & Luigi games, and the soundtrack has quickly become one of my favourites. the number of possible outcome scenarios that the game successfully accounts for in any playthrough is both impressive and amusing. And when all is said and done, it's actually made me stop and ponder the sorts of things I take for granted with the deeply ingrained gamer mentality that applies to almost any other game.

I laughed, I cried, I was caught off guard repeatedly, I had a barrel of fun, I felt things that no other game has made me feel, there wasn't anything about it that struck me as particularly underdeveloped or aggravating, and for those reasons it earns a 10 from me.

This game is a giant middle finger to everything made since the dawn of gaming. It's...the standing RPG that I will judge all future "Story" driven games by. And, in my own personal opinion, Chrono Trigger doesn't come close to comparing to Undertale. Undertale does more to your look on life in an hour and thirty minutes than an entire series of games can try to do.

Strange, is it? I honestly don't think so. Undertale is the story of when Man becomes the Monster's monster.

You're a human child that falls down into the banished realm of the monsters. Every single thing you decide to do affects the lives of everyone around you. But not just them. How you are represented within this, too.

It's hard to really talk about the story, as, amazingly enough, the internet unanimously avoids spoiling the game. I will continue that gesture by not furthering your knowledge of the game. Instead, I will talk about what first caught my attention about this game.

    The combat system.

You have "Fight"___"Act"___"Items"___"Mercy"___ at your disposal. Your fight option mechanic consists of timed button presses to do more damage than you should.

    Items is self explanatory.

    Act...and Mercy...

They are your non-combatant routes of dealing with foes. You can, in a strange idea, stop a monster from attacking you by telling a joke, stealing their hat, or getting close to a tsundere plane...but not too close.

You can choose to spare your foe, or flee altogether with Mercy. When a monster no longer wishes to fight, they will be able to be spared.

Although...You're not forced to stand still and take damage, unlike in most other RPGs. In the Mario RPG style, you're able to do actions to avoid ALL attacks. You can go through this entire game without being touched, although that'd take ridiculous amount of skill...Instead, you dodge attacks via bullet hell style. For those of us who have played games like Touhou and the sort will be in their zone. Although, the game is able to teach players who haven't played them (or like them) on a perfect difficulty ramp.

One of my favorite things about games are bossfights.

My opinion on Undertale's bossfights? Absolutely perfect. Each boss brings an entirely new dimension that is explained by subtle hints that the player WILL undertstand quickly. All of the bosses in the game deserve high, high amounts of praise, but there's a particular one that puts Touhou bosses at their very knees in comparing. I wish I could mention it here, but if I do, "you're going to have a bad time."

This is also the only game I've given 300% of my ****s given for the characters. Every single one of them I cared for, cried for, cheered for, and was pissed off at (in a emotional way.)

The game time is all over the place for people. Some people complete their first run in six hours, some in fourteen.

The music is godlike. Beyond the levels of talent of those like ZUN and Two Steps From Hell. These songs are not "Song Walls Of Heroes" that you'd hear. Every single track in the game is built more for the moments, and play right when it's needed. There's over 100 songs that are unique, and none overstay their welcome.

The humor of the game is just as perfect as the rest of the game, but I won't spoil them here.

Not only this, but the game is aware of itself. It knows your actions, beyond multiple playthroughs.

I highly reccomend this game to the highest degree. It's the first game to be "Perfect."

As highly opinionated as that word is, that word is fact for this game.

If I was forced to choose experiencing any game, and that'd be the final game I'd ever get to play, I'd be perfectly alright with this being the finale of games that I'd ever play.

If you pirate this game, you're beyond cruel. For 10 US $, it's much cheaper than a AAA 60$ "experience."

    Many morals will be learned.
    You will learn to live.
    You will know pain.
    You will know sadness.
You will know happiness, beyond the walls of the game. Is it even a game anymore? No. It isn't. It's the finale. Perfection.

    --

This game has moved me like no game ever before it, even those few I hold precious to me - this game is at once nostalgic yet unrelentingly modern, culturally a product of our times but with the trappings of older games at first glance. I desperately want to replay it, yet the game itself leaves me in a such a state I'm not sure I can. It has been several days since I completed it, and it still holds a ludicrously powerful emotional sway over me, something incredibly uncharacteristic for me. It's genuinely overwhelming, to the point I can't write this review as an analytical or objective thing - it's a moving work. It'll challenge your notions of what constitutes a game. It's genuinely funny and genuinely sad. It's a piece of art that surpasses anything I could have dreamt of. At times it is languid and calm, at times rapid and exciting - it dabbles with reference humour, but never indulges in it. It pulls no cheap tricks besides music - and if music to inspire the emotions is cheating, then this game cheats extraordinarily well.

I can't carry on right now, so I'm just going to throw this 'review' out there as it is - an emotional impression of the game by someone left enraptured, blissed and devastated by it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know people are gushing about the atmosphere, charm, humor, etc. And this game has it in spades, as well rocking music and great visuals. I think that's been sufficiently emphasized already.

But the thing is the game can be picked the f*** apart. Whenever I think it's just a generic (though well executed) plot development or world element, even with the ending, if I explored a bit, looked for all the item descriptions, interactions, endings, gameplay variations, how and when you save your game, you find a whole bunch of **** about the background story, subtle character details, the nature of the world and how it relates to the game itself reminiscent of Elder Scroll's Chim, or Homestuck (which for obvious reasons I imagine is a more direct inspiration). IT's all stuff you enjoy finding more than having it blatantly presented to you- and the innocent, whimsical and whacky veneer just makes it that much cooler that this stuff is at its core.

Regarding the morality system, even though the "true ending" is [spoiler] the one that absolutely ideal morally, all the mixed endings have those aforementioned small details that still make them worth playing, or at least reading about/watching to give a little bit more depth. And they all relate to each other in world as well- [spoilers] basically time travel. And while this isn't a totally original concept for games dealing with saves/newgames, and there aren't nearly as many little tidbits regarding this overarching story, it's some of the more interesting stuff, as it relates back to a single trio and a mysterious force, that one can gradually trace back to a large portion of the games happenings, as well as the nature of an unexpectedly judicial entity throughout all of them, with enough digging.

But the biggest impact is what is essentially the alternate route, genocide- note: IMO you should DEFINITELY do this after getting the true ending. It has drastically more difficult bosses (I don't think you should play Undertale if gameplay is a HUGE priority for you, it's more of a sum of it's parts kind of game. But if you are looking for a challenge from this game, definitely aim for this route at some point-note, it's not necessarily just killing every enemy you see). A lot of plot points won't make sense. The persistent save that allows the "timeline overarching" story elements will permanently alter the true end (in a small, but significant way)- but most of all the effect of doing it after playing through the world as you know it once was makes the impact that much greater.
I don't want' to spoil the effect, but the route essentially does what very few games, let alone simpler indie ones, accomplish- being entirely evil does not feel like failing to be the games hero. It feels like successfully being the apocalypse. And this route is incorporated seamlessly, not only into the worlds lore, but also back to the aforementioned three central figures. And the difference in tone is so well and subtly executed it actually made me queasy, which in this case is a plus.

This is pretty long, but I really wanted to capture some of the really unique, but not immediately evident qualities of this game, b/c a lot of people are essentially writing it off as tumblr/meme circle jerking. And I sort of know what's provoking this reaction, as it does lie very heavily in that area of the internet tone/humor spectrum, and these tropes are very often abused or self absorbed mutations passed around a la the circle jerk that spawns them. But let's not pretend that all communities and all individuals aren't capable of doing that with any kind of humor/tone, nor that there aren't legitimately GOOD ways of executing and presenting these qualities that inspired the abuse to begin with.

But even disregarding kneejerk reactions towards the lingering scent of your "outgroup"- know that people who like games, classic games, niche games, are playing this because it has a certain substance to it, that if not objectively good, or even something you enjoy, is at least something that you appreciate it exists. This guy put in work, he didn't advertise himself or blatantly appeal to a key audience. This game is crafted. Not necessarily for you, and therefore there will be those who dislike it, and those who don't have positive experiences. That's to be expected.

It's not a cash in. That's outright ignorant. To those who say it is a failure of x-genre, or y-precedent, it more often than not is trying to be x or y. By my interpretation anyway.
That's my response too most extremely negative reviews.

As for the positive ones- they might be a bit too glowing, to the point where they start to lack credibility, and play into the whole "it's just a dumb fad" perception many detractors have. But they do come from a place I agree with. It's a good game. It's been a while since I've gotten so into one, not because it's necessarily deeper than the rest, but b/c its simplicity draws you in unexpectedly.

I must say Undertale is amazing like what most of the reviews said. However, I must add that this game is not just a pretty cutie RPG, this is heavy (perhaps heavier than LISA) and really make you think about your choice you make in the game.
I really wish tobyfox will make a major update or DLC sometime in the future.

The most unique part of this game is that if you have the option of either defeating an enemy, or sympathizing with it and letting Toriel take care of it. That may seem like a stupid idea, but you get different endings depending on whether you attacked enemies or went through the game as a Pacifist. The writing, the characters, the story, the gameplay, the boss battles, everything about this game is executed so well. Many AAA games today work so hard to make a game immersive, charming and overall perfect; while I won't point fingers, Undertale is the true definition of perfect. There isn't a single thing that I can say bad about this game, it's seriously that good. The only nit-picks I have are minor, and I don't think they're worth talking about. If you are thinking about buying this game, my answer is an absolute yes. 9.99 is the perfect amount for this work of art.

    Undertale gets a 10/10.

I'll keep this short since I'm not good at reviewing, but this is easily one of the best games I've ever played, the True Ending has left an impact on me and only made me love the game even more than I do.

During combat, you are able to either kill enemies by typical rpg attacks, or spare them using dialogue options. This creates three main choices for how you play the game, pacifist(no kills), neutral (some kills, some spares) and genocide(kill everything). This creates subtle yet meaningful changes in the story that force you to question the choices you made along the way. The only downside is that in some places the art can be a little rough, but the game makes up for it with great characters, combat, music, pacing and one of the most creative final bosses in gaming. Toby Fox clearly understands what makes a RPG great, and understands the many flaws that the genre harbors and channeled all that knowledge into Undertale.

The theme the game carries is being a 'friendly RPG' where killing is totally unnecessary and your choice alone. It's a theme that's more than just conventional and runs deep into the core, and works absolutely wonderfully and results in extremely great encounters and dialogue.

Nothing in Undertale feels like a drag. Everything has been put into the game for very specific purposes, and it almost feels like Toby Fox thought of every possible outcome when working on the game. It's mind blowing.

It sounds like I'm just nerding out and gushing about the game, but it really is that fantastic. The flaws that I have are purely nitpicks and do nothing to ruin what the game pushes forward. NPCs could look more lively and I would've loved to see more of the world it presents, amongst other things. All just little tiny nitpicks.

The sad thing is, talking about many of the things that make Undertale the fantastic game it is would require spoiling the experience itself. However, to put it in short... I don't believe I'll ever be able to play another RPG the same way again after experiencing Undertale.

Please do yourself a favour and play this spectacular game.

Then about 10 minutes into the game I messed up, big. I cried a bit because of how crappy it made me feel about what I did, then looked up a guide on how not to mess up like that and restarted the game. This game really surprised me, I did not hear of this game before its release and I really did not think I would enjoy it. I never really liked RPG type games but this game is absolutely astonishing and has brought a amazing take on the RPG genre. Before you read more about this game you should really play it first because it WILL change your perception on games and maybe even life itself. Its got beautifully simple retro graphics and one of the best sound tracks I've ever heard in my life (Even though it is just chiptune music).

The fighting mechanic is what really sets this game apart since you don't have to murder anybody and the world around you will change in a variety of different ways which will leave you feeling guilty or proud of yourself. The game also has an un-necessary amount of detail, almost everything in the game world has a few lines written about it when you interact with it.

This game is absolutely full of moments will will leave you in tears and laughing for a long time, and will change your playstyle for all other games. It has the best replay value I have ever seen in a game and it will leave you hooked for a long time, forcing you to try and find all the little secrets the game has. This game puts ALL other AAA games to shame and is made by an indie developer with 1/1000th of a budget that a normal developer has, and still manages to blow them out of the water.

Play this game, I guarantee you will have a tonne of fun

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's been a long time.

When I was a child, sure I played video games. But only one could completely and thoroughly encapsulate me with it's gameplay, charm, lore, and more... The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For years I loved this game, and (sparsely) replay it to this day. The magic of it, pulling me in and keeping me there thinking there was a way to get that pesky Triforce. This was an age before the Internet truly boomed and secrets weren't revealed twenty minutes after release. It was almost like the game was alive to me.

Then, I grew up. Or at least I thought I did... Maybe I just had to accept the fact that what I had was in front of my. No special secrets, no truer ending than it's final credits.

You get older. Games became routine. Suddenly, games became fifty shades of brown, they became shooters, they became hide behind cover, they became cookie cutter. Unable to lose my addiction I'd play games, but I'd hate myself doing it.

I assumed the magic was gone forever.

Until this odd little game came out that I hadn't heard of. Undertale.

I managed to beat it through once. I had overheard to be a pacifist and it had supposedly paid off until my first runs end. The game had to start over. But that was when I realized...

There is magic. There IS MAGIC.

Multiple endings! Being truly judged by your actions! Not everything has been found yet. There is still a search for Gaster. Whatever spark, whatever imagination I had as a kid playing OoT... Suddenly it's back. And I can dissect the game by MY rules. I've completed all three known "true" endings but I know it, I KNOW there is more to this little game.. and it's what keeps me going.

The characters, gameplay, bullet hell mechanics, all just icing on top. This truly is a masterpiece that came out of nowhere and I'm proud to have bought it.

+AMAZING finger-snapping soundtrack that blends 8 bit and 16 bit MIDI of the past with the recorded instrumentals of today, to create something nostalgic yet fresh and never-before-heard.
+Well-written, witty dialogue and likeable characters.
+Deep, extremely meta storyline that will tear you apart guaranteed.
    +Sweet, dark, and funny.
+Simple graphics that belie the true nature of the game.
+Innovative hybrid gameplay where your actions will have consequences, even across playthroughs.
+Chock-full of secrets that nobody's found yet as of this writing, much more to see past the main story if you have the patience to find it.
    +Hella replay value.
    +Nightmare fuel!!
And if you care about this stuff...
    +Canon lesbian couple.
    +Canon gender-neutral protagonist.

-Rather short, a playthrough can take 4-6 hours.
-One path is rather tedious, but the lore it contains is worth it IMHO.
-You will never want to leave.

I always said to people that Mass Effect is my favourite game of all time. It now has very strong competition. If not the world's most perfect game, it's definitely worth considering when the time comes to pick the year's best.
