One of the best games I've ever played. The story is compelling. Combat can be challenging. It often requires the player to prepare for the particular type of monster and to patiently negotiate striking distances while controlling crowds of monsters. There is a lot of exploration in a very realistic looking world. Finally, the music is awesome.

Yes, they do suffer the console limitation for some asinine reason, and one can only wonder at what marvel we would have received if they didn't appeal to the limited graphics capability of 8 year old hardware. But mods on PC fix it somewhat.

The quality of product here should become the baseline for larger studios, who somehow produce much worse products with far greater budgets.

On release I gave this game a 4 for horrid controls and optimization among other things. Recently there was an update that has appeased me greatly. The game now runs with an extreme smoothness on my pc. This new fluidity has improved gameplay for me immensely and has caused a turnaround in my opinion. Better late than never I suppose.

Been playing RPGs for a very long time, since elementary school some 30 years back, and CRPGs since Bard's Tale I. I've had the fortune to experience almost the entire progression from initial text adventures, through 2D and the jump to 3D. What CDPR has managed here is total immersion, by exploiting the medium chosen for maximum effect.

What made traditional RPG and text adventures fun was that there was always a personal connection that made you feel like an integral part of a world, not just an avatar trodding through one. There were never any busy-work and the game sessions always sought to keep *you* entertained. Witcher 3 is without doubt the best embodiment in digital form of what initially drove me to like RPGs, in that it managed to take me away to a distant land for moments of time (longer than I'd dare to admit) briefly becoming one with the world.

Sure it's an absolutely stunning looking game, a technical feat that ran flawlessly on my modest system (i7 4470 + GTX 780) at 1920x1200, but what really set it apart and made it so memorable for me was the masterful game design. The chaps behind the title must have iterated the formula over and over, for months on end, always asking themselves what the essence is that RPG gamers crave, what is fun and what isn't. The ingredients to make something wonderful have all been carefully prepared, that is clear from the first minutes of game play. Fantastic story, meaningful interactions and lots of surprises, including twists that seasoned gamers might not expect (like believing the game is about to end, and then discover you've not even scratched the surface). But *how* these ingredients are woven together, and the unfolding of the adventure paced, is what I believe makes this title something extraordinary, something for the developers to be proud of, and me thankful for having experienced.

I never thought I'd see a title like this, but now that I have, I'm afraid I'll be disappointed by pretty much anything else released the coming years, aside from the promised expansions that is.

Some advice; if you're an RPG fan, don't buy this game until you have quite a few vacation days lined up. It's like a great book that keeps tugging at your attention whenever you let your mind drift or relax, even when you're not gaming. Resistance is futile, so let yourself succumb.

I think this game has many flaws, such as mechanics, skills and abilities design, enemy and encounter designs and level design so on. Games like Skyrim and Bloodborne have much more entertaining core gameplay.

But the Witcher 3 redefines the scope and depth of what a game's narrative can hold. Although the narrative isn't terribly interesting in the beginning, it soon expands into a vast variety of different stories that are woven together into a coherent and vigorous narrative spanning many hours. This is something we haven't seen in RPG storytelling before. I suspect this was where the bulk of the game's efforts went into, and it's the part that remains with you after the credits roll.

If RPG's before the witcher were analogous to teenage fiction with A to B straightforward storytelling, the Witcher 3 feels like a complex novel you have to struggle through, but the very act of navigating such a complex narrative is an entertaining and rewarding exercise in itself.

I think the scoring of this game as a 9.3 vs a 9.5 comes down to what weighting you give to the "game" portion vs the "role-playing" portion. With my criteria prior to playing this game, I would have given it a 9.3, because I believed that games should foremost be games. However, The Witcher 3 completely works as just a piece of interactive entertainment, with the emphasis on the participation in the broader narrative more than the moment to moment gameplay. As an experience, even with its gameplay shortcomings, I think this game deserves the distinction of one of the top 10 video"game" experiences ever.

So far i've played for about 5 hours and the game has a fantastic atmosphere, music and visuals. The combat system seems very fluid and satisfying (big step forward compared to 2nd instalment). Writting is as always outstanding. The world looks and feels alive. Even the smallest quests I encountered are well written and simply interesting. Everything looks astonishing and runs great on i5-4570, 8GB and msi gtx 760 2GB Twin Froz in 1080p on high settings (number of background character on ultra and shadows on medium) with depth of field, blur, ssao, light shafts, sharpening, vignette on. I have solid 30fps (with 30 fps cap)

Now I am sitting in my job, writting this review but the only thing I can think of is where will I go and what will I do as Geralt. This is how modern RPGs should look - with great technology but not deprived of the most important aspects of this genre: great story, characters, choices and depth - this game will not offend your intelligence (and i am a long-time fan of Planscape Torment, Vampire: Bloodlines, Fallout 1&2 and Arcanum fan). Now run to the store and buy it!

While there are mountains of praise to be poured onto a game this rich and a company that earns it's keep while treating it's player base with respect, there is little I can add to the sea of love this game receives and rightly deserves. I think the most meaningful thing I can share is what is most meaningful to me in the time I spend in enthralled abnegation.

The little things. While the game has massive and detailed set pieces, a vast landscape and expansive writing that could never be overpraised, it's the infinite little touches that amount to so much more for me. There are hundreds of nods to minor characters, quests, and choices in previous games, subtle humour that is never out of place, references to all levels of game culture, subtle views into the souls of the characters through minor narrative elements made evermore compelling by beautiful voice acting, and constant reminders that the world in which you adventure is truly alive. From the tail slaps of the blue wales in the Skellige Isles to the uniqueness of each hidden ruin. Every thing has a story, a personality, a life of it's own, and it's all worth exploring.

There is no effort needed in falling for a true labour of love. A love so evidently shared by every level of CDPR's team. From playtester to CEO, there is not an individual there that does not possess the company wide unity of vision needed to produce a game this beautiful.

Thank you CDPR for reminding us what a lovingly crafted triple A game can be.

    - Sense of conflict in world, tension, where everything is complicated and your only choice -- lesser evel. Not crappy fairy-tale about good knights and bad big demon.
    - Good pace and balance between story + side quests around. Just in right proportion.
    - Big open world, great level disign. Nature is good and extreamly realistic. Villages and towns... oh! Novigrad - best fantasy town IN ALL GAME INDUSTRY IN ALL TIMES. Simply amazing.
    - Pretty weapon and amor disign. Some times just pleasure to made and see new items on Gerald. Eye-candy.
    - Integrated card-game. Simple, but enjoyble.

    Not so good:
    - Im not a fun of open world filled with markers "to visit" (more Assassin Creed way).
    - Rather agressive scaling of encounters by level, annoying after DS2 where you can kill anyone with just skill (or Skyrim - with... time).
    - Combat system is not ideal. Better then in Witcher 2, but still more or less mechanical (simple pattern - defence spell - strike - roll back wins 99% encounters with no use of brain). Skyrim-like healing, when you eat tonns of food during actual fight.
    - Clumsy inventory.

    So?

Must have and play for every RPG fan and veteran. Buy it, will worth every coin you spend during hours and hours of adventures : )
