I've never written a review on here, but felt this one needed some defending.

Outer Worlds isn't reinventing the wheel by any means here, but what it does do is highlight a lot of classic RPG aspects without wasting your time in the process. The dialogue options are very well branched, and often times well hidden. Obsidian are almost the godfathers of this sort of dialogue gameplay,

Other than that, I was really surprised how good the gunplay felt after getting used to it, and the VATS-styled ability does a good job in keeping it smooth and familiar. The environments are also very colorful, and not straining on the eyes, which I feel sometimes studios never quite get dialed in correctly.

All things considered, the Outer Worlds is a rock-solid RPG that doesn't try to do anything it shouldn't. Everyone knew they were getting a full game with no micro-transactions, and getting what they were paying for. In my opinion, that alone is adds another aspect that should be commended.

This game focuses heavily on story, and world building while still maintains very fun combat and exploration mechanics that we’ve all come to love in our first person RPG titles. Honestly I did my very best to not spoiler anything for myself and to go in knowing as little as possible and boy have I been rewarded. I created a meta critic account just for this review. It’s a solid 8 out of 10. GO BUY IT or get it off the Xbox game pass for $5 the first month like I did. This is a MUST play experience if you have been severely disappointed by another shattered company... cough cough. Bethesda. This is RPG done right. Play on super nova. GO Expand

Bethesda should be ashamed. The outer worlds is everything a fallout game should be, the character interaction options are so deep you could drown in them, the gunplay and gameplay is spot on and no single build wins, there are options for everything, from someone who sneaks around fights.and talks their wy out of others, to characters who go in everywhere all guns blazing. The companions have a "life" to them that I've not seen in YEARS; instead of the usual "please sidekick and romance" option you get real storylines and personalities for each member of your crew.
The amount of quest outcomes is staggering too and greatly adds to the replayability factor of the game.
There are a few bugs and issues with the game right now but they are bearable and I've yet to encounter something game-breaking.
All in all if you want a story driven, lore heavy, first person action RPG then you should buy or "try" The Outer Worlds.
It's a welcome break from the usual AAA garbage that gets churned out.

One thing I find surprising is the people claiming that this is an SJW game, as "the board" reminds me most of the Chinese Communist Party; where workers are treated as party (or in the outer worlds; company) property. They must not have.any real idea of political systems (and probably support Donald "Israel First" Trump) though setting that aside you can work for the board, it is an RPG. It doesn't say group A is evil thus you must kill them. I suggest the people calling this an SJW game recheck their reality, even the character creation only has two gender options, something which will be "broadened" in Cyberpunk 2077.
Of you think this is an SJW game you are an NPC; not a leftist NPC but the Trump cheerleader NPC. At least the settlements in The Outer Worlds have walls.

In this day and age of micro-transaction trash and pay to win duds, this game is the breath of fresh air. It is so rare to have a new intellectual property pack such a wonderful punch. If you are a fan of Star Wars, if you are a fan of Firefly or its movie Serenity this game is a must. I took my time with this title, exploring every area and every quest I came across and spent about 30 hours. For the average player I see somewhere in the ball park of 20 hours of game play. IMHO the only con for the game is that it's too short. Had to play it through twice

9/10 (Giving it 10 because a lot of people gave it 0 which is totally undeserving)

This is a breath of fresh air in a world and time when literally every game tag itself as an RPG doesn't even have much RP elements in it.

This game is not an AAA game but you can clearly feel the amount of love developers put into this game.

    1. Story and side quests are short. Could be double the length.
    2. Gameplay is very easy, even in hard difficulties.
    3. Everywhere in the game is filled with same useless loot (millions of bullets and food and so on all around)
    4. Very few rare/gold/epic/whatever usable items (except 3 science weapons, which are useless). All the rest are standardized...

Game designers need to realize the killing effect of this "standardizing" in recent games..
Chaos is what makes the world flow, not order. You need to implement chaotic features into the game, to allow for great and unexpected experiences. Some very hard bosses, some unbalanced weapons and so on. Fallout 2 wasn't so much fun because everything was standard. Life doesn't work that way. Standardizing is totally boring and removes all fun. Please go ask Blizzard and learn from their mistakes. Ask them why people reverted to totally unbalanced and chaotic Vanilla.. Was it because it was nostalgia, or because the experience felt better.

Still giving the game a 10, because it deserves a flat 8-9, which some people won't be giving due to other reasons.

Outer Worlds is an open-world RPG that is fantastic and worth your money. The game is stunning and not too hard to run on your computer, the story I find is mediocre but the side quests are amazing and worth the time to go through on your first run. It's a true RPG allowing you to become who you want and not some Fallout 4 trash where everything is already there for you. The combat is dull at first but becomes progressively better with the introduction of companions in a mass effect style and also the introduction of science weapons and special weapons spice up the gameplay. Companions also have special moves and slightly unique skill trees. I do think there is a lack of standard unique guns to use and eventually it becomes dull. Also, the game is wayyyyyy toooo easy on normal, definitely play on hard to have an enjoyable experience that's challenging,
The setting, each planet at least has one special creature and unique humans. The cities do feel a little copy and pasted but the environments on the planets are diverse. The cities feel lively with filler citizens talking constantly and unique NPC's with great side quests or tasks. I've only encountered two side quests that have bored me in my own experience. The planets feel lively and also gruesome with some pretty dark and menacing areas. The game is also beautiful and I've caught myself looking at the sky for minutes at a time.
The creation menu and leveling are interesting at first and I do like how the skills are arranged. The skills are arranged in certain categories like strength and perception and on average each of these categories have three skills. You can upgrade each of these categories increasing all of the skills under the category but once the skill gets to fifty you have to upgrade the skills separately. Also every two levels you get a choice of a perk, it's kinda boring in my opinion since none of the perks have any interesting benefits. You can also gain perks through flaws, for example, if you take damage from falling too much you will get a phobia of heights which subtracts some skills but you can gain a perk but instead you do have the option of rejecting flaws which I always did since perks were not a huge deal. The creation of your character's physical appearance is a little lacking with hairs, face shapes, and facial hair having a lack of options.
This section will be very short and it's about bugs, I encountered one bug related experience in the game and that was a barrier on a mountain which I found to be weird but it didn't hinder my experience.
Now to talk about the story which I find to be pretty dull, the main story is funny in my opinion but it is not focused on at all and you have no incentive to do anything in the story. I wasn't attached to anybody related to the main story except my companions. I do think the story is creative with its witty irony and jokes, but otherwise, the main story is boring and probably one of the worst elements of the game funny enough.
Looting and inventory in the game sometimes are funky, the ship you have has basically infinite storage but there is a huge amount of consumables in the game that you will pick up and not use. They will clutter your inventory and do not pick them up unless you are playing on the hardest difficulty which has a hunger bar mechanic.
    TLDR;
Pros: Fantastic side quests, a fantastic blend of other game's mechanics, great companions, decent combat after the first hour, funny, a very very hard mode, cool special weapons, fantastic environments that are stunning, great unique NPC's, towns feel real, cool innovative skill system, basically no bugs in my experience, replayable game, and a true RPG.
Cons: Dull main story, perk system (not skills) is useless, the physical creation menu is basic, too easy on normal, funky lootings system, and a lack of interesting standard weapons.
Overall the positives outweigh the negatives and the negatives are not a problem at all really. The game is short but is replayable with multiple endings and is what the bar for a modern RPG should be. You are able to be who you want which is more than what RPG's now in days can offer. Outer Worlds is way better than fallout 4 and is better than Fallout 3 in my opinion. I say give it a shot at least and if you don't trust epic games buy it off of humble bundle or wait till 2020. Thank you for reading and I hope you'll like the game as much as I did.

What Fallout 76 should have been!

This is how you make a good open worlds action role-playing game. Good story and it seemed like choices actualy mattered. Runs perfectly fine on my half decent pc. The only reason I'm not giving it a 8/10 is because I had some bugs while looting resulting that some loot got lost before I could pick it up but thjs did not happen too often.

This game isn't FNV, it's not a diamond in the rough, it's an exceptionally beautiful set of narratives and characters that are at times slightly flawed and could use some external consultation, which I'll partially attribute to budget and an unforgiving release schedule, but gameplay/graphics are primitive, no crafting, no weapon diversity, none of the things which went into and made hits of the games obviously inspiring this, Borderlands had dynamic weapon diversity, Mass Effect had strong character agency, Fallout had diverse environmental story telling, tonnes of discoverable notes/info not related to the primary campaign and persistent object interaction all of which spells "immersion" .

Survival is also a nightmare, companion permadeath would be fine if it wasn't so easy for them to get their faces blown off and ineffective controls to prevent said faces from gleefully escaping mortal trappings. Survival shouldn't be a difficulty setting, it should be about survival, and given the lack of a dynamic world that's exponentially harder than it is in FNV/f4 etc. Punitive gameplay mechanics don't enrich an experience when they're presented as absolutes with limited alternate routes and extremely finite choices, that sort of thing hearkens back to the 90's when games were typically an hour or two long and your choices were to jump fire, miss and die or jump fire, don't miss and not die.

Also the landslide of reviews giving it ridiculously high scores are dubious as hell, but if that's what you need to get your bonus due to aforementioned monsters i'm there for you with a 10/10 also. But please try harder to realize your vision, and I don't mean at your craft which is clearly peak, I mean the general practice of managing talent, you have the people and the talent - how is it being used? who sets your release schedule and how do their ethics interact with your own? these are dire times for this form of game and both you and your fans deserve better. Break free of slavery, re-finance your house and do a kickstarter, let us prove to you we can carry you with a bundle of cashmoneydollars. The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.
