It's basically a Fallout game dashed with some Mass Effect flair. It's real decent. Must check for sure, but not necessarily a must have.

Opening the map has the same issue, it will sit there with a loading circle for many seconds before it shows up. The story is.. eh. There's a lack of conflict and urgency in the context of your character. You're just unfrozen and go around doing things for people. There's no big villain, no impending doom, etc. There is a main goal of unfreezing other people from your ship, but after 16 hours of playing so far, nobody else in the game world is trying to stop you, or even acts like they know about the quest to begin with.

edit: I've found a workaround for the technical issues: turn on vsync. apparently my framerate was too high for audio and textures to load properly, which of course makes absolutely no sense...

Something else thats annoying is if you kill someone that's part of a city and you don't know. tough **** Everyone in the city will start attacking you next time u go there, even if there were 0 witnesses to you killing that one random guy. The whole main questline is just so bad. Idk how to say it, it's very unclear on what it really is and it is just not captivating, modding weapons is lame too. Things you kill are either too easy or too ridiculously hard (like **** mantiqueens), no satisfaction in killing, most of the time you don't even need to kill you can just run past everything until they de-aggro. Nothing cool to collect really like bobble heads in fallout. A huge thing for me is how boring and unsatisfying lockpicking and hacking is. u just get a bunch of ''magpicks'' and if something needs like 5 magpicks to open, u use 5 and u just hold ''e'' for 5 seconds. super lame, no skill in it, no satisfaction.

TL;DR: -Not clear on where to go for quests or any specifics
-Mainquestline is boring, uncaptivating and just unclear, it doesn't make you wanna play it, but then exploration is also scuffed
-If you kill someone important in some random place, the big city that he comes from will just attack you on sight next time, even if they have no witnesses of you killing that person and you didnt even know he was part of that city.
-modding weapons and armor is pretty lame, the mods arent really that cool
-things are either too ez or too hard to kill, not satisfying at all
-nothing cool to collect like bobbleheads in fallout
-Lockpicking and hacking is so... goddamn... boring, its not like in fallout where it make it a bit entertaining, u just hold ''e'' for 5 secs until it opens
-lockpicking uses lots of ressources so u have to be picky but u dont really know if something is worth picking so that sucks
-companions die instantly constantly, u need to upgrade ur skills to make ur companions do any stupid thing which is just unfun
-i get this is post-apocalyptic but the map is just bland and distasteful
i just don't recommend at all, at least i used xbox gamepass to get it, bc buying wouldve been a waste of 70$. Very disappointed and I can tell they put a lot of effort, but all in the wrong things, like dialogue is cool but they spent too much time on that compared to other stuff that needed work. Waste of 16 hours

I think the game is good and fun to play but that's about it nothing really special or new for me. It doesn't introduce anything new/original but it uses a good formula and uses in a new context which is the space colonization. Although nothing new in terms of the gameplay or storytelling i quite like the world/universe building and actually would consider to play new games in the same universe.

I love Fallout 1, 2, New Vegas, and The Outer Worlds!
Good story. Fun dialogue. Fun combat. Interesting skills and perks. Amazing art and music....
It would be excellent if there are Traditional Chinese, 3rd person POV to switch, and more more content. ( More stories, more quests, maybe DLCs, or The Outer Worlds 2 )

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's a great mix of Fallout and Firefly. Could have used a little bit more development time to really flesh out some side-story content. I did pretty much everything in about 20 hours. Still, a good start. I'd love to see Microsoft really get behind it with money so Obsidian can take it to the next level.

    PROS:
    - Nice worldbuilding with retrofuturistic vibe.
    - Clever sneaking mechanics albeit too easy

    CONS:
    - The plot opens with a good premise but then spirals towards a really unsatysfying ending. The promise of "many endings" is just marketing; in fact you have 2 endings - goody-two-shoes one and stupid one.
    - 9/10 of games' guests are MMORPG-ish fetch quests that are boring and repeteable. We visit 3 planets to collect crap from monsters here for one quest -hm I thought colony is dying? Wouldn't the resources be scarce, including fuel? Hell no, our vessel is supposedly fueled by solar power because we can freely roam back and forth for peanuts.
    - Speaking of dying colony and peanuts - people are supposedly starving, but there's a ton of food lying around not to mention food vending machines on every corner. Kinda like in Fallout 3 when 180 years after the war there were stil full-stocked fridges and cartons of cigarettes in trash bins.
    - Combat is really simple and your main oponents would be canonfodder - "marauders" that are supposedly transformed humans (?) but now uncapable of normal speak and behavior. Still capable though of wielding specialized weapons including flamethrowers and full armor, capable of camping at every road nook in Monarch - without any financial aid and organization... yeah bro.. that adds up, I guess...
    - Humor is near to nonexistent; in fact its limited only to funny adverts and occasional sarcastic remarks by your ship's AI. There is no situational humour, no absurd, no slapstick, no witty remarks from your companions. Most of the game feel boring.
    - Companions themselves are also nothing special. Game tries hard to evoke sentiment for Normandy, where crew had often something meaningful to say between the missions. Here companions angage in mindless chatter about tv series and baseball games.
    - Fractions doesn't matter in this game. The attempt to adopt system from Fallout: New Vegas was a fiasco. You can have good rep with all the fractions in the end and let's say it doesn't change much.

To sum up, I wouldn't reccomend bothering with this game. In a hindsight I could play much older games, from which Outer Worlds draws inspiration and it would be definitely time better spend.

Honestly, it's boring. I was a big fan of Fallout 3 back in the day, less so Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4, Fallout 76 didn't interest me. I jumped into this expecting a better version of FNV and I guess that's what this is, but the thing is - this game plays exactly like a game from 2008.

The combat is boring, enemy AI is as simple as see enemy>run towards in most direct route>attack. The AI perception is god-awful. I was sprinting around in full heavy gear and I could walk right up within 15 feet of an enemy without stealthing as long as they were facing the other way. Gun mechanics are bland and most combats are ended quickly with good aim, usually within seconds.

The NPCs are bland and boring, they simply stand around and wait for you to interact with them, completely ruining immersion. It's like something out of Morrowind!

The soundtrack is also boring, you'll basically be hearing long, slow drones repeating in the background constantly.

The story so far is uninteresting, I find myself avoiding interaction with NPCs in favour of wandering the wilderness and seeking out combat and loot. I was able to skip a portion of it by travelling a "dangerous" planet by foot to the other side, at least that was fun - finding loot 10 levels above my own.

Everything in this game feels like it was designed to be "safe" and to not take any risks. In other words, not to deviate from FNV in any significant way.

I got this game via game pass, but if I paid full retail for this game I would be mad. It's worth trying on game pass since it's so cheap but I cannot explicitly recommend it.

Except for Phineas Welles, there are really no memorable characters. Companions are meh, but you need them for skill checks, that give you... experience? Great. Ah, and invest i tech skills. Might sometimes get something usefull out of conversations.

But the thing, that really kills me is that no one... moves. They are always in the same place, no matter the time of the day. Breaks immersion.

And the choices. Will you support an corporation, or an idiot. A corporation, or a murderer. Corporation, or ... you get the idea. And why are all the planets the same? I mean, a bit different shade of stones, but the gravity is the same. Ship is static and boring. Cliche's like cannibals? Check.

If this game premiered 4 years ago, I would give it an 8/10. But today... games moved on.

Now for a good part. Lore is indeed fun and interesting. Characters, while bleak, have good stories to tell. It has some holes, however, it's enjoyable non the less. Guns and melee weapons are interesting, especially science weapons. Quests are okay, however mainly consist of - go fetch me something.

Overall - average. But if you just so happen to have windows gold subscription, you might just as well play it.

    -some decent humor sprinkled throughout
-INCREDIBLE amount of polish. I played 22 hours and didnt encounter a single bug, thats huge considering what a lot of the other AAA devs are pushing out nowadays.
-tons of side quests that aren't too grindy
-tons of loot to find, and upgrading to do
    -huge, awesome branching storyline

    Cons
-The main story is on the shorter side. You could probably complete it in maybe 10 hours, I chose a pretty mixed route and did all the side quests I came across. It took me about 22 hours.
-There are some things that break immersion. You can kill people right in front of your companions and they react, but only briefly. Immediately forgetting about it, and there's no dialogue options to discuss it with them after the fact.
-I wish they'd have made you go through more areas that were gripped heavier by the board, to make me feel their cruelty more. The first town is really the only one being super oppressed, the rest are either outside of board control or living happily.

Overall I would recommend this game to any who love polished RPGs. Especially the old Fallout games. If it is available to you, Game Pass is relatively cheap and it is available on that service.

There are a few things that I think could be improved. The ending feels like it comes too soon, like it finishes a lot of what I wanted to have played, instead its just telling me "and then these other things happened later". If this game has some epic DLCs that come later, perhaps that will help, but as it sits I just wish it went further into the story. Some other small things here and there also were not done to a "10" quality, but other than the story feeling suddenly ended, I could easily forgive any of the other little shortcomings I found here and there.

    PROS:
    - Fun gameplay
    - Humor (dialogues and writing)
    - Story's decent enough to keep the player entertained
    - Good and diverse companions with a character of their own

    CONS:
    - Outdated graphics: I mean it's the end of 2019, and the game looks much more like Fallout 3 than Red Dead Redemption 2. Let's face it, on the outside the game's dated right from the start. It's not a deal breaker, but all those generic faces and interiors get dull pretty quick.
    - Boring quests: most missions in The Outer Worlds are classic fetch-quests, and not of the good kind. Almost every mission seems to follow the same pattern: receive a quest, go somewhere to shoot things, come back withe quest item and/or knowledge. It gets old pretty damn quick, and if it wasn't for the fact that shooting stuff is actually quite entertaining, the game would be a drag.
    - Bad pacing: it's almost always the same; you come across a new area, you gather all the quests you can, then you solve them, and move on to another area. There is no grand scheme of things that would push you forward. It almost seems like a linear shooter with just a tinge of RPG, and that's a definite con. And it's all pretty slow.
    - Poor equipment and character options: this game will seem quite easy even for an average player. It doesn't matter what kind of character you create. The same goes for your equipment. You can use whichever armor and guns, it hardly matters. This ain't no Fallout.

IMO, The Outer Worlds got published a few years too late. Had it been competing with Borderlands 2, for example, it would have been a close call, but in 2019 it's just a pretty shallow action-RPG that only aspires to be a Fallout successor. In truth, though, it's much more an impostor. Wait for a sale, because it's not a bad game, just not one you NEED to play at the earliest convenience.

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

An excellent effort from Obsidian, and though The Outer Worlds doesn’t surpass its predecessors by offering a world worth visiting over and over, the adventure it presents is more than worth the time spent.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
