This game has insane amount of content... thats what I was thinking before it got few gigantic updates with hundreds of things in them. Its not really Minecraft in 2d, think about it more like a metroidvania with crafting and building. Once you get into it, you can easily have fun for months, maybe even years...

Fantastic game, especially if you play it with a couple of friends like I did at the time. It is just a really chill experience. It might have been a 10 if I had spent a bit more time with it, and maybe a little bit less time solo where I am simply building stuff. I think otherwise this game is even better than Minecraft imo.

Terraria progression is kinda weird, took a while to get used to it. Cant do much and it forces you to explore while you know nothing. But its pretty addictive. Has many bosses to offer and its core gameplay doesn't get old quickly. Minecraft should take a little bit of inspiration from Terraria and add more bosses.

This game is just amazing and stupidly addictive. Years ago i thought this was like a 2D Minecraft, kinda boring you know ? Oh man is was soooo wrong. I would even say: Terraria > Vanilla Minecraft. I still have not experienced 1.4, but when i come back to this game i will definitely lose my Real life again.

So This is why I bought it!
But It's Sad Tho That They Stopped Doing Major Updates
They Could Have Made More Stuff!

amazing game that I've played all the way through. You will need this to be your primary game to play though because when you come back to you world after a while, you can lose motivation and could get lost. But overall, the content is great especially for that price-tag, it's a steal.

Why are game critics stupid? They gave it a low score because it was a "Minecraft" clone but in 2D. They have the same genre but not the gameplay. Terraria is a game that just made me grind. It's so fun i actually had more time playing than me studying. The gameplay and graphics is very good. I've introduced this game to all of my friends, it was the first game I completed with my brother and the first game I played with my wife.
The game is basically pure gameplay, but, wow, what gameplay! The soul of this game is character progression, and the whole world progressing with you.
First, you start with the weakest tools and weapons, very weak and without almost any magical aptitude. You are very vulnerable to all enemies and the game is very scary at that point. But quickly you start finding better equipment, you start to increase your health, and you start to become a very powerful being, that has shaped the whole world for its purpose.
The game is very thrilling, you fight many bosses, each with completely different AIs and strategies to defeat.
I will forever love Terraia, and I hope the team behind gets all the praise they deserve from the gaming community.

Terraria is an exceptional sandbox game that has captivated players with its boundless creativity, addictive gameplay, and vast exploration. With its charming 2D graphics, extensive world-building mechanics, and a staggering amount of content, Terraria offers an unparalleled experience that keeps players hooked for countless hours of adventure.

One of the game's greatest strengths is its open-ended nature. From the moment you step into the procedurally generated world of Terraria, you're free to forge your own path. The game seamlessly blends elements of exploration, crafting, combat, and resource management, giving players an incredible amount of freedom to shape and mold their environments to their liking.

The sheer depth and variety of gameplay mechanics in Terraria are truly impressive. The progression system is well-crafted, offering a satisfying sense of growth as you gather resources, defeat powerful bosses, and unlock new items and abilities. From building elaborate structures and crafting powerful weapons to delving into treacherous underground caverns and battling fearsome creatures, there's always something new and exciting to discover.

Terraria's multiplayer mode takes the experience to another level. Joining forces with friends or other players online to explore, build, and conquer adds a whole new dimension of enjoyment. Whether you're collaborating on ambitious building projects, engaging in thrilling PvP battles, or simply adventuring together, the cooperative multiplayer aspect enhances the game's longevity and replayability.

The pixel art style of Terraria is visually appealing, evoking a sense of nostalgia while still maintaining its own unique charm. The vibrant and varied biomes, from lush forests to eerie underground caverns, are filled with imaginative enemies and captivating landscapes. The game's soundtrack complements the gameplay perfectly, setting the mood for each different environment and enhancing the overall immersion.

While Terraria offers an extraordinary experience, there are a few areas where it falls slightly short. The game's learning curve can be steep at times, especially for newcomers who may find themselves overwhelmed by the depth of its mechanics. Additionally, the absence of a clear tutorial or guidance early on may lead to some confusion. However, once players overcome these initial hurdles, the rewards are well worth it.

Terraria's dedicated and passionate development team continually updates the game with new content, ensuring that the adventure never grows stale. The regular updates, including major content patches and events, demonstrate the team's commitment to keeping the game fresh and engaging for its dedicated community.

In conclusion, Terraria is a masterpiece in the sandbox genre, offering an immersive and endlessly enjoyable experience. Its freedom of exploration, engaging gameplay mechanics, and collaborative multiplayer make it a standout title that appeals to a wide range of players. Despite a slight learning curve and initial lack of guidance, Terraria's exceptional depth and constant updates earn it a well-deserved 9/10 rating. Prepare to embark on a journey filled with endless possibilities and unforgettable adventures in the world of Terraria.

At first glance Terraria might look like a simple cash-in on the popularity of Minecraft. But it is far from that, as there are numerous features that make this game different and infact and alternative to the blocky 3D sandbox.

Terraria is more RPG/exploration orientated than Minecraft, which relies on the users creativity to make their own fun. You will dig, explore, collect materials and craft. Sounds similar, but Terraria breaks away from Minecraft with features like a deeper level of exploration and bosses. Instead of simply mining in a randomly generated cave that become tedious. You will find yourself in areas like dungeons, an underground jungle and even hell it self. All adding to the variation in the game, something that Minecraft lacks. Bosses also break from the tedium of basic monsters by providing the requirement of additional strategy than simply just hit and run tactics. Characters are also capable of being migrated to new generated worlds when you inevitably do all that is possible or you meet the end of the world (an opening to an ocean) , which is something that Minecraft lacks.

The only problem I see with this game is there is a wall you reach when you have done all of exploration and item collection. I have played for more than 40 hours and I have done all what can be done. I'd like to see more updates to keep the game fresh and possibly a mod API to have an effectively infinite replay value. Some people have also been having issues with multiplayer, I have yet to try this feature due to the issues I've had, so no positives or negatives can be levered towards it. This is a serious competitor to Minecraft, I (and possibly a lot of other people) believe that this game shows Minecraft's flaws, and Notch is going to be losing a lot of customers who want a more RPG/hardcore orientated experience.

That's because they haven't played it.
Terreria is similar to minecraft, yes, but has a much more diablo loot feel to it.
honestly if you threw mario, minecraft, castlevania and diablo into the game-o-matic you'd get this.

Future updates are already in the works but I'm reviewing the game as of now. If the TerrariaOnline.com Wiki didn't exist or if people don't take the initiative to seek answers for their questions about the game, I can see how it is very frustrating in the beginning. The Guide doesn't really help you at all and hardly goes in depth when explaining the proper way to build a shelter and how to get the other NPCs to move in. Also, explanation of the crafting system deserves some improvement. If you have no IT background, hosting a server is difficult and entering a users IP to join instead of selecting from a list is frustrating as well. Other than that, the game is genuinely fun. A couple friends and I started a world together and I found myself laughing almost the entire time. The content is so intricate, you are bound to spend hours exploring and adventuring. I am truly excited for what they add in the future. Expand

This game sucked me in for the first ~20 hours almost playing 10 hours in a row (so be careful to miss school / your job!). Even after "finishing" the game by obtaining the best gear and defeating all bosses there is still plenty to do. Unless you lack imagination in which case you might get bored. There is a lot of room to build. Not just houses, but fun creative stuff like Bowling or even Buzzwire (check youtube). Now to the negative parts of the game. First off the multiplayer was kind of laggy, as in that monsters often 'teleport' especially slimes and deamoneyes. There are still bugs and errors after the first patch, the game sometimes randomly crashing on switching to fullscreen. But those should be fixed with the upcoming patches. Speaking of patches there is still plenty of improvement, like adding more NPCs, items and bosses. I am sure this game will improve even more. One of the best games I have bought in years. Enjoy. Though...there's a lot of little detail that the 'Tip Character' doesn't let you know, forcing you to go to forums or Youtube videos to understand (which shouldn't be the case for simple things like how big a home should be to attract people to your world). The music gets a little drab over time as well, but it's very easy to turn it off and pull up your own playlist or Pandora. The combat can be downright irritating at times, tempting you to avoid confrontation with very basic baddies. And the multiplayer is tons of fun, but a lobby system is something to be desired at times, when playing with only friends isn't an option. This is a tremendous game in the end, regardless of little things that could be better. The size of the game really hits you when you go mining down into the world and seem to never hit a boundary, exploring and discovering new things and places is fantastic, and the freedom of creation in Terraria will keep me playing for a long time. The music the first time you hear it is great, but since there is only 3 minutes of it it gets boring after a while. Hopefully if they continue to add content to the game this will be that one game I play when I want to do something other than shooting or thinking.

The gameplay and the focus of the two games are very different. Whereas in Minecraft, the emphasis is to build impressive structures and go exploring, Terraria is about getting stronger and better gear to fight bosses. Yes, you can build in Terraria, but it's only to get another NPC character to live in, not really to impress with the scale and grandeur of it. Of course you COULD build for that purpose, but I think that side of Terraria is quite dull. Fortunately, the game's focus is on exploring underground and searching for floating islands for upgrades, weapons, items, accessories and materials to make better gear and weapons so that you can take on the strongest enemies in the game and it's a lot of fun doing so. There is a lot of gear in the game which helps keep the game from becoming stale the more that you progress and the boss fights are a lot of fun. The best way to think about it is a Castlevania/Super Metroid with Minecraft elements.

Unfortunately, getting used to the game does take a fair amount of patience as there is no direct tutorial, but I've never been one for hand holding in video games, it takes away the feeling of fun and accomplishment you get when you get good at a game. Also, once you've beaten the bosses and obtained the best gear you can, the building mechanics really cannot sustain the game and there's not much of a reason to continue playing the game, but for £6/$10, I've sunk more hours into it than what I do most full priced retail games.

It might not be a perfect game, but it is a lot of fun and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest iota of interest in it.

So why should you buy this game? Just like Minecraft Terraria is a work in progress, each patch (released at a rate of 1/month or close to) adds new monsters, bosses, items and crafting recipes, so new content to collect and spice up the game is free (for the cost of the original game). Nostalgia value, 15 years ago this would be SNES game, and it would suit it. But then the same could (and is) said about Minecraft, if you buy this game you acknowledge the fact that you are buying a mining and life simulator. You collect goodies, kill monsters, build remarkable 2D structures as befits your imagination and the limitations of the engine - and if you get bored, hookup with friends in a server to build, kill and do what you would do in Minecraft. The game places the responsibility on you to make fun for yourself, it provides you with challenges (monsters, limited resources) but it gives you no quests and no story. Random events like Blood Moons and Goblin Invasions are there to keep you on your toes, but can be avoided.

This is unlike Minecraft, Minecraft by the limitations of being requiring much more rigorous coding for 3 dimensions updates infrequently, but is essentially infinite in size though only allowing one character per world. You cannot take characters into brand new worlds meaning that if new content requires seeing parts of the map you have yet to arrive in you'd best either make a new world (and reacquire potentially hundreds of hours worth of materials) or travel far away from your spawn point (a limitation in its own right). Terraria is 2D, so updates regularly (requiring far less rigorous coding) and can add many new objects and fixes, if you require a new world you lose only your building and mining excavation but keep what your character has on them. Both games have their own advantages, differences and similarities but both are valid and brilliant games. You should only buy this game though if you want to tap into some of that SNES era nostalgia, enjoy frequent content updates, challenging experiences and 2D mining. Do not buy this game if you expect the level of 3 dimensional complexity of Minecraft, you will be disappointed.

Terraria is however in many ways a very different game, focusing on a 2D pixel-fest the game is aesthetically pleasing and great to look at, by being 2D Terraria affords more detail to be applied to everything in the world. The aim of Terraria is to build structures, dig for resources to build better tools, adventure across the land and fight monsters. All of which are easily done and the game has clear cut curves of difficulty, the deeper you dig the rarer the materials you find, but also the more dangerous the enemies. There are a lot of items to collect in Terraria through random events or crafting creating a RPG-style system of weapons armour and magic. However this was it's downfall, by adding more directed game play and content, the games ability to keep you playing wears off after you have obtained the best armour, weapons and more gold than you could ever need. Luckily, I have no imagination, so Terraria was a nice change of pace. So what is Terraria? It's basically a game about mining and exploring. You can craft things with your minerals, fight monsters, and trigger world-changing events. I've spent about 30 hours with the game and have seen most of the content (I played through with two friends, one who's spent twice as much time as me with it). Overall everything about the game is pretty fun and I don't want to spoil anything. I got a lot of laughs and enjoyment from the game. My three complaints are that the UI can be frustrating, searching for specific minerals is annoying, and the game is extremely content dependent and my interest fell HARD when content ran out. With the recent 1.2 update, I gave the game another shot and it is such an improvement over the original version. Retro graphics and sound is a nice touch and the expansive worlds provide a great deal of freedom and exploration as there are a variety of biomes, enemies and loot to be discovered. The inclusion of an optional tutorial would be nice for newcomers though and I would've liked some more guidance in terms of crafting items, as I found myself constantly alt-tabbing to check a wiki. Options for world generation would be nice as well, so I don't have to generate a whole bunch for a pyramid or something. There is a sense of progression in the game which does make Terraria more accessible for players who find absolute freedom a little daunting. Even for players who aren't into building great spectacles of creativity, there was much fun to be had in acquiring the best gear available.

Overall a good game, but not without a couple flaws. The icing on the cake is the game is very cheap so get it now if you haven't already!

Terraria is a magical combination between 2D platformer/"shooter"-fighter + creative building + Item Farmer. I like the options you have in building stuff, it gets very close to minecraft. The fighting (pve/pvp) makes a lot of fun (far far far far far more then minecraft), especially the heroic bosses and pvp with some friends is just a ton of fun.

It's basically Minecraft in 2D and the lovely settings help making it a bit more than the game that copied Minecraft. For a cheap price you can play hours and hours and explore the places around you. The gameplay is extremely well made and offers a lot of possibilities. All in all a very good game, addicting and with a great replay value.

Terraria is very nicely executed sandbox. If you expect stories and quests then this game is not for you. That being said, game is not for everyone. You go venture underground and slay mobs, build your castles in fairly nice 2D graphics in a bit old style.
There are 2 major downsides of the game.
Firstly as you kill more bosses and go to hardcore mode, hardcore bosses are really very hard.

Secondly developers already announced that there will be no support in future which may turn some away.
All in all the game will be as good as you make it yourself in good sandbox style.

How can you show off your amazing new skyscraper you just built if you play alone? You can fill your friends' houses with sand, build ingenious pitfall or boulder traps, fight epic bosses together, and have fun getting lost in the labyrinthine cave system, where you'll be spending the majority of your time. If you don't have friends to play with, avoid this game. Expand

RPG and sandbox elements in game, combined with scripted events such as bosses. The only downside is I wish they introduced an option to get a server list in game instead of resorting to out of game server lists.

Upon starting the game for the first time, the similarities to MineCraft are quite obvious. You must collect wood and find a shelter to hide out for the night. You must collect wood and find a shelter to hide out for the night. However, just 10 minutes of game play showed me how different (and, in some aspects, better) this game is from MineCraft. There is a greater variety of enemies, NPCs come to live in your town, and, frankly, there is just more stuff to do. I can't go into details, because the surprises add to the fun, but just reading on the Terraria Wiki shows me that, even with all the time I have logged, there is still so much more for me to discover and do. The reason I rated an 8, not a 10, is because of two big inconveniences I have run into. First, the game can't be paused, unless auto-pause is on, which means you will be unable to navigate with the inventory/crafting menu open. Also, whenever you exit the game and relaunch, you start back at the spawn point, which might come in handy if you are battling a ton of monsters and about to die, you can just exit and relaunch, but if you are in the middle of a cave, and you have to exit out the game for whatever reason, it is hard to resume where you left off.
Final thoughts: While most games focus on graphics, Terraria focuses on the actual game play. While it most likely did come from the idea of MineCraft, it adds to MineCraft in so many ways. Granted, I still love MineCraft and will continue to play it, Terraria is a great game as well. If I am in the mood to be creative and build and explore, MineCraft is what I will play. If I am in the mood for an adventure, Terraria. Two completely separate games, one unique concept. If you love MineCraft, play Terraria! If you love Terraria, play MineCraft! Terraria is probably the best 10 bucks I have ever spent. Period.

I, like many other gamers I'm sure, was very skeptical of this game when my friend recommended it to me. When I first saw the videos for it on Youtube, steam, and various other places, I could not help but immediately think of Minecraft in 2-D and who could blame me? After playing it however I realize the there are several differences as well as a few unfortunate similarities between this and Minecraft. First of all, like Minecraft, you will spend a majority of your time digging underground looking for various metals and the such and like Minecraft it's incredibly monotonous trying to find enough to craft everything you need. In fact it's harder to obtain the right amount of material to make things like better armor and weapons and other tools. It goes without saying then that this game is much better and easier with friends, still it is enjoyable playing single player from time to time. The real fun of Terraria comes when you actually get the right amount of materials to create a myriad of different tools, weapons, armor, and accessories for your character to use. There is the basic stuff, things like swords and pickaxes and armor. Then there's a lot of cool stuff that you can't get in Minecraft such as guns, lightsabers, flails, rocket boots, wings, spell books, special charms that turn you into a werewolf, the list goes on. There is a lot that Terraria can offer you but only if you're willing to work very hard to get it, but when you do, you feel awesome. Expand

This game, terraria is a very good game. It is a good game for people who are familiar with minecraft. It's the same concept of survival and such and they put a bit more into it. The controls are a bit confusing and hard to work with but other than that, its a very good game.

I would like to make an update to my previous review, even though towards the end there is nothing to do, and you most likely have everything in the game, there is still an insane amount of conquering to do in every realm thing. And it is also pretty fun to burn stuff with the lava and such.

Terraria continues to receive hefty updates, even as Starbound's release date edges closer. I bought this game on sale for about 2 bucks purely for the lulz. Little did I know this game was laced with crack.
    WARNING: Simple yet so addictive.

Terraria is an amazing game, taking from all aspects: free-roam, rpg, adventure, sandbox, and allows you to do plenty of things in game, such as boss fights, creating your own world, and exploring dungeons and caverns to expand your wealth and arsenal. The sad thing about Terraria is that creativity isn't that possible in 2D compared to minecraft where 3D is amazingly easy, and when you have all the end-game items there really isn't much to do but delete your character, delete your world and start all over again; or try to make farms of all sorts. The annoying thing about Terraria is that it's very easy when you get the end-game armour and weapons, leaving you to try and figure out what to do. A little imagination, however, can go a long way. Making farms and houses look visually appealing, making boss or gameplay challenges (underwater fight, no armour/potions fight, tier1 gear fight, etc# can make the game a lot more fun than people think. the disappointing thing is that Terraria's updates are slow #especially since they only started updating it again after the 1.1.2 release#, and there's no supply&demand other than ammunition for ranged weapons which is easily accomodated as items have no durability #unlike minecraft) If you enjoy exploring, surviving, creating things to your appeal; then I'd reccomend this game for you, because with a little imagination, something simple goes a long way Expand

Often accused of being a 2D Minecraft clone, Terraria proves that this couldn't be further from the truth. While I admit they do have some similarities, when you get into the meat of the game it becomes it's own thing. Accompanied with an enchanting soundtrack and charming retro pixel art, Terraria has become one of my favorites.

Terraria is one of the best sandbox games. Terraria has some Minecraft spirit, however the focus of the game is on fighting and crafting, so it involves more action. The best way to enjoy Terraria is to play it with a couple of friends on your own server.

It's a title that will appeal to the adventurer, the explorer and the builder; not to mention those who appreciate a substantial amount of player freedom. If you happen to be all of those things, Terraria is a lightly tarnished treasure.

A lot of games tried to copy Minecraft – or at least participate from its' success. But this two-dimensional take on the well known formula is the only game that is able to step out of the shadow of the indie phenomenon that inspired it. It leads you into a unique world full of creative magic.
