This game is amazing. Has to be one of the best games in steam right now and Im not even kidding. But I don't mention this because he did that, but because he was reasonable in his review. Anyways, on to the review! First, a lot of people say "Oh, Terraria is just a Minecraft ripoff." and there is a fair deal of Minecraft ripoffs but ALL games are inspired by ones that have come before them in one way or another. In Terraria you collect materials, and build stuff. Sure you'll be building things and it is rewarding but you can't be as creative in a 2D plane than in a 3D plane, you just can't. Which makes building more of an on the side thing, but the core of gameplay in Terraria is raiding. When I say this I mean going and exploring whatever biome is available to you depending on how far you have progressed you character thus far. First you'll be exploring just normal underground, then corruption and jungle and oceans, eventually the Underworld and more for loot. Not just equipment but rare materials and statues. And when you hit certain landmarks in progression, you will acquire NPCs that will move into your house and sell you things. I have had many countless hours enjoying this experience in both single and multiplayer, especially multiplayer and I highly recommend you play with a friend or two but it is still very fun (and more challenging) in singleplayer. Terraria has an amazing soundtrack, depending on what area you're in, but of course it is all up to preference. And the graphics are very well done, it gives you nostalgia of the good old days of platformers, and are new and fresh at the same time. After assessing everything I would give this a 10/10, but once you've got the best equipment and defeated the last boss you have nothing to do unless you want to start over again. Which is fun for some. But what would this this great game into an amazing game would be having quests or maybe something rewarding to do with all your top-tier gear to flesh the game out. Don't get me wrong there is a butt-load of content, but if only there was more. Expand

I have to disagree with WookieLove. I understand how you say that Terraria isn't the best sandbox game. IT ISN'T MEANT TO BE. It's more of a RPG or a platformer. And under that genre it's amazing. I would say more but... Honestly can't be bothered. Most of the other peoples' reviews some it up nicely.

I LOL'd at all the haters that gave this game a 4 or less. What game were you playing?! This is a great 2D Platformer with so much to do and so many items to craft and build. Shallow gamers should stick to shallow games.

Anyways terraria is a 16-bit 2d platform game created by re-logic. My aspect of this game was "oh its a minecraft ripoff" i couldn't be much wrong. For a start the gameplay is basically an adventure, monsters are abundant in this game, some are challenging while others are not. With the crafting system it reminds me of a mmorpg called wonderland online of course that game you fight monsters to build. Build new stuff and being able to acquire rare items from dungeons and fight bosses makes it worth while. There is hidden treasures and some help your character in a big way relics that can be obtained just by finding it and a bunch of gadgets to build. Since i said its 16-bit style of play it reminds me of the super nintendo days of playing. The game has dungeons to explore building one thing to get the best thing you are achieving for is self rewarding. If you want to challenge yourself in this game there is softcore meaning if you die you loose coins which are helpful later on in the game, medium core loses items and coins, if you want to be the diablo 2 style of gameplay there is the hardcore gameplay which if you played diablo 2 you will know what i am talking about.

Water physics are impressive since you do not see the water just floating in space. Sure most of the building is simular to minecraft, but its rpgish adventure, looting and boss battles makes this a gem even if it has the SNES nostalgia graphic look.

I am sure that some people will just take a look at the screenshots of the game and just dismiss it as a bad game because the graphics are completely not high quality graphics. Just because the graphics are not realistic doesn't qualify as a bad game. Now lets look at the bad part about this game while i admire the SNES nostalgia feeling and the rpgish crafting system and building structures i had to say one thing and that is the tutorial. The tutorial for this game was a bit out of place. When i first started the game i did not know what to do. Sure there is a guide person who tells you what you can build and tips, but above all the tips only refer to things that might be in the game. Since this is a 2d game the suspenseful moment is small when fighting monsters. Like shooting games your character can recharge their health by literally standing there, terraria is like that but a little slow regeneration. This game has a low-moderate modding community the results of this modding community make the gameplay somewhat fun to a limit that maybe exceeds the price of terraria which is $10.00.

That is basically it on the game if you like building, and crafting while at the same time have that nostalgic feeling of the SNES era and RPG fashion, try this game out.

I got terraria a long time ago and it is a very fun game. The updates over time have greatly improved the game and added a ton of content and variety. It is a lot more combat oriented than minecraft while at the same time allowing you to do world changing effects much faster than possible in minecraft due to its 2D structure allowing you to cut the map up however you want and so on.

Terraria has pretty much no modding community. Do you know why? Because the game already has all the content you could possibly want. Seriously, this is the most complex sandbox game I've ever played. And most importantly, its fun!

I'm giving this game a 9 out of 10 only because there are a couple of punishing aspects to the game, that I think shouldn't exist in sandbox games: 1) Potions have a cooldown timer, and 2) Death reduces your armor (you can pay the nurse to get rid of this penalty, but it still feels harsh). These two things are the ONLY times I've ever thought "Hmm, not fun." when playing Terraria. Highly recommended, especially if you think you might like a combination of Minecraft + Metroid + Castlevania. It's even better when you play the multiplayer with a trusted friend. Well worth the ticket price of $9.99, if you're strapped for cash or looking for a really good deal, Steam routinely discounts it 50-75% off. Expand

And yet ANOTHER thing that's funny is the people judging the graphics. You guys realize that's a stylistic approach, right? It has a classic, retro look and feel to it. It's especially fun to pick up with friends. It appeals more to the explorer than the crafter, however. There's always something to go out and search for or obtain in the game, and I love that feeling. Although you can build awesome, detailed structures in Terraria, it's fairly limited as it's a sidescroller. In the end, your main objectives are to explore and combat against the various bosses in the generated world. More specifically, some things I really liked with the game were how I could port a character between different worlds (including single player worlds to multiplayer worlds and vice versa) with such ease and not having to sacrifice anything for it. I also love how it was a little more straight-forward about what to do in the game with their "guide" character. You don't have to spend large amounts of time looking up how to craft things on its wiki because it's there for you. You DO need to spend some time on the wiki in order to know how exactly to progress and know what is all available to you, but you're not completely dependent on it like you are with Minecraft. Overall, it's a great game, especially with friends. The only downside I had with the game was that I felt that sometimes there wasn't enough content available. Also, some people may disagree, but I think the implementation of an experience system would have been nice as well. I can't wait for Starbound to come out in the near future from these guys. They definitely know how to make an awesome game. Expand

TL;DR A good time waster that has been abandoned by the devs. Terraria is an interesting experience that will probably result in people not knowing what they're doing at first, and then either sticking with it or quitting. One of the only problems is the difficulty and gear curve at first, and then later when hard mode is started. The game has a very slow start due to the fact that you basically need a nightmare pickaxe, which takes a while to get. The game then repeats the curve once you enter hard mode, where you'll have about 4 hits to live with the common enemy. The great things about the game are the well done 8-bit graphics, versatility of the weapons and trinkets, progressive boss fights (though there could be a lot more), and the freedom to build whatever you want. Don't forget to invite a friend or an entire party as well! The only problem is the fact that the devs have essentially abandoned the game, so there will be no further updates unfortunately. While there is still quite a bit of content, you really have very little reason to play after getting a max character. There is also a lot of potential missing with the fact that there are only 4 bosses their hardmode counterparts, and I feel like there could have been more biomes featuring their own boss. One last big thing that might get some people is the grinding you have to do. Its part of the game, but to those who hate it, you might not last through those dry spells of action where it is required. Overall, its still a fun 2D platformer focusing on building and combat, though if you hate grinding and the current fact that it has been dropped, you might not enjoy it.

Sure it uses similar ideas, but what voxel sandbox game doesn't share ideas? With different bosses, loads of monsters (more to come in a update soon), and a whole extra gameplay mode (Hardmode) after beating the last boss, this game has a ton to offer. Did I mention it's only 10$?! The polishing this game needs is highly understood also, seeing as in early stages it was hacked and the lead developer was forced to release it unfinished, so he could get credit for his game.
Overall, this game will give much more play time than any 60$ game in my opinion. It already has for me, and I'm just entering Hardmode.

Its a MineCraft like game but in 2D but different. As you do in MineCraft, you can build a house, and build weapons. But in Terraria you can have special ability's, defeat bosses, holiday dlc, and much more. Fun game, but its mainly only fun if you have friends to play with.

The game is relatively cheap, and it often goes on sale on steam, so I highly recommend this game for everyone. I wish they didn't stop updating it, but it is still a really great game to have in your arsenal. I literally bought this game for everyone I knew, spent well over 100 dollars worth of copies (on sale each time).

Not to mention there's multiplayer, and the 2D CAN be invigorating to play with for some old-style recognition, and the music is just fun to hear. There are lots more monsters and items than in Minecraft, and much more bosses as well, giving more varied gameplay. Of course, with all this implemented, the world is limited and not infinitely generated, though it is indeed randomized each time you make a world. And with the current price of $2.50, it's essentially a must-buy. Heck, it's even a must-buy when it's $9.99. I probably would've laughed. But Terraria pulled me in and didn't let me go until I took down the Moon Lord. Through many....MANY countless deaths due to strong enemies, bosses, falls, explosions, drowning, more bosses, traps, I was able to build and craft everything necessary to survive in a world that's against you from the start.

Terraria drops you in the middle of a procedurely generated world filled with caves, tons of monsters, and nothing but a short sword, a pickaxe and an axe. Soon you'll learn how to build a house for your guide and for you to take refuge at night from the more dangerous monsters that roam around. You'll find ore, craft new weapons and armor to better protect yourself and finally start adventuring further and further, deeper and deeper in the world. Eventually you'll have everything you need to take down the Wall of Flesh and enter Hardmode where new enemies and bosses are introduced, new ore to mine and more weapons and armor to craft.

On the surface you can see this game as a 2D version on Minecraft, but if you look deeper, it's much different. Terraria is more like Metroid with the exploration of a new world you know nothing about and Castlevania with the enemies you fight, and bosses you encounter and a few dungeons to explore with hidden goodies. The only similar thing to Minecraft is really the mining and the crafting, everything else is it's own game and that's where Terraria really shines.

Of course no game is perfect and I do have maybe one gripe with Terraria. For example; Some deaths feel really cheap, enemies (especially in Hardmode) are more unfair than challenging, and you'll die countless times just trying to get your items back before even getting close to your grave stone to collect anything. It's important to keep extra weapons and armor nearly as strong as your equipped weapons. Trust me, if you die and need to go deep down, or far far out into the world, you're gonna need extra armor, weapons and equipables to reach your lost items, especially in Hardmode.

That's really it for gripes, though I'm sure people will be turned off by the slow start in the beginning of the game, only taking the game for surface value, calling it a Minecraft ripoff. But if you stick with it, do some research on what items you'll need, how to craft certain things, maybe getting a friend to help with the harder bosses, I'm sure you'll find an amazing game inside a small little $10 package. The ammount of content you get in this game alone is worth the price of admission, you just have to do your research to truly understand the ins and outs of this game.

With all that said, I can safely say this is one of those games that you can spend hundreds of hours doing nothing but building, crafting and still have a blast not really doing anything at all, or you can take down bosses, and look for the best weapons in the game and explore your world to find everything. With it's cheap price and the ammount of content and so much offered in one little package, I can safely say this game deserves a 9.5/10!

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

The game's a bit two-dimensional (no pun intended) in terms of progression after you enter "Hardmode" as you'll likely get killed countless times just trying to gather the ores to make the armour that you need to actually be able to progress. Admittedly, while the pixel art graphics should scare off the majority of "why no tutorial me bro?" types, this game still isn't for everyone and it certainly does not hand-hold you. The charm comes from playing with friends but strangely doesn't require every session be a multi-player experience in order to be satisfying.

Having come a long way in a few years, development wise it can now safely be considered 'done', but just when you're left itching for more, you can also download lovingly crafted adventure worlds (Zelda themed as an example) which somehow keep the exploration fresh while forcing you to relinquish your pickaxe for some good old fashioned brain work.

Excitement and progression is a three faceted affair of exploration, crafting, and building. Dig straight down until you're repeatedly killed by the increasingly difficult enemies, making you naturally want to craft a better set of armor before trying again. Explore so far across the surface of your strange new world only to die in an accidental fall, motivates you to build a new home in the far away jungle so you won't need to make the trek yet again after your next accidental demise.

Grab it on sale so you can purchase a few copies for friends and hop on Skype with them, if the visuals didn't already put you off you're likely not to regret it. Oh, and don't forget to turn off that in-game music whilst tossing on a set of your own tunes. Be it Classical, Gangster Rap, Indie Rock, or Country Western, you're going to be here awhile.

Terraria is slow in the beginning, but gradually climbs as the game progresses, to a point of huge complexity. It takes patience for some to enjoy the later parts of the game.

When I first purchased Terraria originally, I was only doing so to play with a few friends elsewhere, and wasn't expecting much from this game, aside from what others had described, which was essentially "2D Minecraft." These words really couldn't be further from the truth, or rather, barely even scratch the surface of what Terraria is, or can be to someone with a creative mind.

It's a metroidvania. It's a platformer. It's a city builder. It's a blank canvas. It's a social experience. Each of these descriptors can be used on this game and each is accurate. You choose a character, a world, a world size, and a difficulty. Your first nights will be spent scraping together resources to get a shelter up to shield yourself from the undead menace that comes spilling out each night, and finding ways to expand your operations, tools, weapons, and building materials.

There's tons of distinct weapons, ores, tools, armors, magic rods, spellbooks, vanity costumes, furniture and furnishings, and NPCs that arrive as you expand your home, allow you to purchase even more items. Each serves a purpose, as you battle the creeping Crimson or Corrupt biomes that grow each day, in an attempt to completely corrupt and change your world.

A note on biomes: each time you generate a world to play in, random biomes are chosen, depending on the size, each biome has unique wildlife, plants, drops and resources you can gather, ranging from jungles, snow, beaches, deserts, forests, corruption, crimson, the hallows, etc. Over these, random sky islands also hide, waiting for you to explore them. Under each one? Ores, more unique monsters/wild life and random caves/caverns or even dungeons, secret hiding spots with hidden treasures and treasure chests.

Think that surviving the corruption and building is all this game offers? Not quite. There's also massive boss battles and triggered events, like battling goblin armies, and a plethora of other things that words won't allow me to express. The kicker is that there's still another update coming, which will offer even more content. I have 400+ hours in and I still pick it up and play it rather frequently.

Terraria is an enchanting and exciting video game that catches the gamers attention from the get go. While this game is often called a Minecraft clone I believe this to be bull crap. This game has so much content, and choice, that it is completely unfair to be summed up to Minecraft. And don't get me wrong I have been playing Minecraft since the beta days. Anyway enough about Minecraft,Terraria is an enchanting and exciting video game that catches the gamers attention from the get go. While this game is often called a Minecraft clone I believe this to be bull crap. This game has so much content, and choice, that it is completely unfair to be summed up to Minecraft. And don't get me wrong I have been playing Minecraft since the beta days. Anyway enough about Minecraft, Terraria starts off just like all the other clones. This may be why people disregard it as a M.C clone and never play it again. Big mistake! even the beginning offers tons of choice and control over your world. For example do you go and explore an underground cavern with treasures galore? And risk the chance of meeting a ghastly monster, and lose all of your hard earned coins? Or do you stay at the top of the world and gather what you can and hope to fend off the mob of undead on the horizon? I hope I have sold you on getting yourself a copy of Terraria after all it's only $9.99 on steam right now. Now for some downsides to Terraria. The Multiplayer in Terraria can be very dry sometimes as it does not have as many features as other games on steam. You can team up with a fellow adventurer and attempt to take out bosses together, or you could go exploring together, or perhaps build a gigantic fortress and help protect it from waves of undead marauders. As cool as I made that sound it's really just co-op mode. You can also try to join a server but it's more of the same thing depending on which you join. I actually really enjoy the Multiplayer but I like the Singleplayer too. And I think the same thing goes for the other side. Somebody really doesn't like the singleplayer so they hop over to the multiplayer to see if their is any redeeming quality in it. Going back to M.C tons of people hate survival but love to play on servers, and I think something like that should be implemented into Terraria. I love this game and highly suggest that you and maybe a couple of friends pick this beauty up on steam and enjoy it. Expand

The game is fun but there is a lot of grinding to get to the mechanical bosses but that's the only real grindy part. This Game with its retro looks and style similar to minecraft was very fun at the start but as stated the part between the wall of flesh and the last of the 3 mechanical bosses.

Minecraft will 100% be better for multiplayer always but terraria is still fun with multiplayer and is even fun with single player when Minecraft single player is boring and a drag but terraria is fun since you will never know what you will find.

A massively fun game. You have no main goal, but killing all of the bosses seems like the most realistic one. And, oh my, does this game have a lot of memorable ones. And, oh my, does this game have a lot of memorable ones. For the sake of not spoiling anything, I won't say any of them, but most of them are completely unique, and even those that aren't, still have at least something new and fresh to bring. But one of the major gripes I have with the game, is how much the progression gets tied to the bosses, especially in Hardmode. A few other activities would've been greatly appreciated. Terraria does something I haven't seen a game do, and that is the prospect of characters and worlds being two different things. What I mean by that, is that when you create a world, any of your characters can visit it. Yes, this does mean your high-levelled character can give your three-minute-old one an absolutely over-powered sword, but seeming as the player has already acquired the item, it does little to no harm. The items are all incredibly unique, and I was acquiring them by the bushel, items such as the Umbrella, or the Money Through. There is usually a wacky event happening for you to partake in. Another major part of the game is house-building. While making a house early-game is quite a fun task, later it becomes laborious work, and houses that fit the criteria always have a chance to not work at all. Graphically, the game looks great. Every locale, NPC and block is well-made, and I enjoy the simplistic style. The music in the game is also a high note, no pun intended. From the main theme, to the ominous one of the Corruption, each track fits where you are well, and they transition oh-so perfectly. Mods are another giant factor of Terraria and there's no shortage of them. Small, yet almost compulsory ones, such as the Boss Checklist are just as great as massive, content-rich expansions that mods like Thorium give you. Co-op is just as you'd think it'd be, and it is quite enjoyable. Overall, Terraria is a very enjoyable game. Except for the second half not being as enjoyable as the first, and a couple other redundant features that I dislike, the game is a flawless 2D action-adventure game, with heavy RPG elements. Expand

This game is a 2d side scroller type where you have NPC interactions that progress as you get through the game. The game does not hold your hand much and that leaves a lot of excitement as you explore the game. This game has a lot of content. It also has some nifty automation features where you can farm things. I really enjoyed the Biome aspects and all the different types of weapons and really interesting upgrades and equips. You can crawl through the caves like spider man... slide down the side of walls, build elevators and mine carts, large or small houses and rooms. YOU CAN FLY!!! There are loads of scripted events that escalate as you progress, quests are fun and there is even a story line involved. This is awesome stuff and I am sad that there is not a bigger better Terraria 2 yet. Don't miss out on experiencing this game, I cannot find any game better than this one in its genre. It's just fun, and I play on playing this game again from the beginning when my children are old enough to play.

A lot of games tried to copy Minecraft – or at least participate from its' success. But this two-dimensional take on the well known formula is the only game that is able to step out of the shadow of the indie phenomenon that inspired it. It leads you into a unique world full of creative magic.
