Aug 19, 2024Sins of a Solar Empire II is a great space-based real-time strategy game. It is designed to primarily appeal to those who liked the original, splitting factions into two, introducing variation to the star systems, and adding to the tactical complexity. The game does not offer a campaign, but each match generates its own unique stories. The multiplayer infrastructure is solid and there are plenty of options to work with. And the game offers quite the visual spectacle, as big fleets clash with energy beams and missiles striking targets everywhere. Sins of a Solar Empire II could have used an entirely new faction, like the threat the Vasari are running from, and a few more innovative ideas but I like its mechanics and every match feels unique.

Aug 15, 2024Ironclad's impressive sequel has made me proud to be a sinner.

Aug 15, 2024Sins of a Solar Empire 2 burrows a few aspects from the 4X genre, but it’s mostly a very focused strategic game where war is all that matters. It’s very good at it and it’s also great at putting on our screens dozens of very cool spaceships on blowing each other up to bits. If only it also had a campaign mode.

Aug 15, 2024A solid successor that provides more accessibility with many convenient functions and carefully adds mechanics. The new engine also lets the battles shine in a new light. Great effects, nice lighting and beautiful backgrounds create a real sci-fi flair. However, the pure focus on destroying the enemy makes for very uniform games with somewhat too static space battles. In addition, mechanics such as culture, secondary factions or mobile orbits play too small a role compared to the mass production of gigantic fleets.

Oct 24, 2024Putting that divide into a score is somewhat difficult because it’s going to be a compromise that won’t accurately represent either side. An old-school fan who simply wants to bask in nostalgia will rate Sins of a Solar Empire 2 very highly, while someone expecting a little more will inevitably feel disappointed by the wasted potential. I’m counting myself toward the latter group, but I have to respect Ironclad’s commitment to remaining faithful to the original.

Aug 29, 2024A solid space strategy that borrows heavily from major 4X turn-based games, Sins of a Solar Empire II makes it clear that its core focus is on action and conquest, with diplomacy and trading taking a backseat. The brilliant idea of simulating real planetary orbits, which dynamically alters the map, adds depth, though it can't entirely hide the unbalanced pacing and lackluster visual style.

Aug 15, 2024Sins of a Solar Empire 2's frantic, always real-time pace is both a thrill and a significant hurdle. Its banal space-opera vibes and even worse AI art are a huge detriment. But under the hood, Sins 2 still has generic 4X joys to spare.
