Eternity takes the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, adds in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and ties it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment. Choose to play as one of the six playable races: Human, Aumaua, Dwarf, Elf, Godlike, and Orlan. Whether you're playing a stout Dwarf, a towering Aumaua, or one of the otherworldly Godlike, Eternity's plethora of playable races scratch every role-playing itch you may have and allow for deep character customization. Is it even possible to return to the roots of isometric RPG, and not only find them healthy but create such a wonderful game from them? Obsidian has proved they could do miracles when their hands are not tied. [Issue#252]

Renaming the game to "Baldur’s Torment" may be the easiest way to describe the triumph of spirit, design and scope of this masterpiece made lovingly by Obsidian.

It has so many moving parts that work so incredibly well together with an unbelievably rich history and mythology.

Beautiful and complete, Pillars of Eternity is a captivating game mastered throughout. Despite a lot of text to read and lengthy load times, it stands out as one of the best RPGs of our time.

Pillars of Eternity is an outstanding game. It can be criticized with number of individual issues, but as a whole it works great, almost perfect. I know that all veterans of isometric RPGs will enjoy this game, and I firmly believe that not only them will do so.

Pillars of Eternity is indeed great fun for RPG players young and old, and you don’t need a $2000 beast to play it on either.

Pillars is a title that should make old-schoolers happy while still offering a solid core game, story, and a rich setting for new-schoolers.

At first the game is frustrating because the combat system is not standard rpg and their is a learning curve. However, once you start to piece it together the game gets better and better. If you invest in this game and give it some love it will give you love back. In this regard - it is EXACTLY what you would want to recapture the old school magic. I did not give it a clean 10 because I do believe it could have received a bit more polish and mainly because the old school 'pause to play' combat system just seems dated nowadays. They could have added some character AIs like baldurs eventually did but I think something even better should have been created. The chanter is a really great character and I think they need to develop more solutions like that so combat can roll fluidly if they are going to leave it 'real time'. Or they could have simply switched it to a turn based system (like divinity orginal sin) but this would definitely have violated the whole 'Baldurs' gate successor mantra.

UPDATE: I had reviewed this at a 9 but made it a 10 after i saw how much content is in the game. there is a HUGE amount of content and as such it deserves a solid10.

From the look of the game, the feeling when playing, the customization of your characters, the interaction withe them and the environment - everythinfg feeld like Baldur´s Gate - and plays like it. It´s the great old-school RPG all bakers - and not only them - waited a decade for. Fantastic, deep gameplay, tactical pausable combat and many many loot to ind.
I can just say: love it. And recommend it everyone who only slightly loves deep and richt group RpGs, where tactical combat is more important than fast clicking in 1st person view!

I'm only about an hour in and I can say this is the best game I've played in years. I appreciate having a great story, but I'm generally a skimmer. Not in this game. I paused for a second to read all the text and it's blockbuster novel level, it's actually entertaining to read. Additionally there's generally excellent voice acting for the first (or couple) layers of dialogue, which really draws you into the characters. After that it's text only which is a great design decision since I find I read much faster than voice acting and generally skip it after the first layer anyway. A great balance.

    Character:
Character creation took an hour, but it was an enjoyable well informed hour. Little hoverable highlights explain all the details you usually guess at and end up recreating your hero after learning them in game. So far I'm satisfied with my first shot which is a sign of a great character design section. The customization is incredible (characteristics more so than aesthetics). I went for a cypher, a really unique soulsteal-for-mana crowd control caster.

    Interface:
The interface is fluent and hasn't felt clunky, save for a multi-monitor mouse bug that they're working on.

    Combat:
The combat is excellent and quite difficult. I've already died in the game (which I consider good). I've come across enemies that can one-shot me (clearly not linear). The interaction between your allies in combat is critical. The pause mechanic is necessary to execute the strategic dance necessary to defeat enemies and it's implemented very well. The only flaw can be the occasional mistarget when things get clumped which would be hard to remedy in an isometric game.

    Graphics:
I'm playing at max 2560x1600 and I don't know why people complain about the graphics. It's absolutely gorgeous at this level. The prerendered maps look great and really draw you into their world.

Currently I'd rate this a 9.5 if I could. I think there is room for very minor improvements in their next iteration, but they very nearly delivered a perfect game here so far. I'll update as I approach the end-game.

Go ahead and get Pillars of Eternity. That simple. It's fun, it's easy to get into, it's sufficiently deep to avoid that console RPG feel... it's PC gaming.

Graphics are adequate. Pretty large skill trees. Combat stays fresh.
I had a couple sound and graphic glitches but I'm not going to be the guy that gives the game a hit for what is likely my tech specs fault.

If I was going to knock it on anything it'd be the typical RPG lore that feels like a social statement similar to a George Romero movie or D&D game sometimes but that's a personal gripe that likely will have little to no impact on most people's experience with the game.

    RPG fans shouldn't hesitate.
