PoE is a great example of a game with strong gameplay and storytelling features. Its challenging and complex, but the tooltips and well organized journal will get you through it.
There are bugs, most are just annoying but you will have to deal with them. Still only about half as buggy as you would expect from a kickstarter game.

This game isn't for everyone. If you care much about visuals or graphics, and little for story or gameplay, you should try another game. But if you, like me, are into story-driven CRPGs, then you should really go for it! Chris Avellone is a good writer, you can expect a great setting and a good story from this game.

Regarding a lot of the negative reviews based on the games graphics, its incredibly ignorant to downvote this game based on its engine when it promised from day one of the kickstarter that it would be a 2D game going back to the Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale style engine. When other developers release old looking, even 8 bit games like Terraria, Minecraft, Super Meat Bow, Binding of Issac etc etc, the gaming industry and players rave about such graphics being retro and great, yet a game like this that still looks better than a purely flat 8 bit game gets idiots whining that it looks outdated and old.

People will remain dumb and uneducated, and such people's opinions will continue to stink of ****

Ever play Pathfinder or D&D, or the old Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic games? Then the systems here should be *relatively* familiar. And you know what to expect -- incredible versatility, lots of choices in how to build a character, how to grow a character, how to shape your party, and how to approach the story & world.

And it's made by Obsidian, so it's good that this goes heavy on the text & story, because Obsidian has the best writers in the business.

This game has. The writing has been brilliant, and coming from someone who enjoys reading a lot, that's pretty cool. The whole soul reading aspect of the game was a surprise to me and being able to read about a bunch of the inhabitants of the world helped bring life to it (I'm still bitter about how lifeless the majority of Dragon Age Inquisition felt). And the companions are a pretty fun unique bunch to go on this journey with. Previously I had never really gone too hardcore when it came to combat in games, but in this game it's sort of required that you be at least a little strategic and it's actually making the game more fun (I restarted my first play through because I felt my character was not optimal). I've never played the old infinity engine games, but after I beat this game a few times I'm definitely going to check them out. The role playing elements is far superior to any game I have ever played. Your dialogue choices are catered to what your background is, and how you shape it in the early game. No more of this "bad or good" nonsense, with dialogue being the exact same. Obsidian went through great lengths to bring us a true role playing experience, I honestly feel like I am sitting at a table playing dnd with my friends, only it is an interactive video game.
The only issues so far is that it is slightly buggy (one instance where my mouse just stopped working so I had to reboot game).

It perfectly captures the feel of the classics, while tweaking the mechanics to make it more intuitive and user friendly. it has pretty much everything I loved about Baldur's Gate without the weaknesses. I was never a big fan of the real time with pause and would have preferred turn-based combat, but it is very well executed and balanced. Combat can be challenging at times, but never feels unfair (Btw, I'm playing on normal). The engagement rules and the slow motion mode are a great addition to this kind of combat. Most potions and many abilities can only be used while in combat, making the usual cheap trick of buff stacking shortly before an engagement impossible.
All things considered the gameplay is top notch, with a character system that offers a lot of flexibility for your player character's backstory and specialization. Your race, culture, class (and sub class, there are several different Paladin orders, some of them definitely not the stereotypical good kind), stats and reputation often give you alternative dialogue options which can lead to different approaches and outcomes.
Reputation is more than just good/evil. Instead you can earn a reputation for being honest, greedy, diplomatic, aggressive, benevolent, cruel etc, and most dialogues give you options to that effect. I have also had at least one encounter where choosing the diplomatic option backfired and I was attacked. Some people just can't see reason.
Anyway, that's what an RPG is supposed to do: it gives the possibility to really play a role and define who you are.
The graphics are probably a bit too old school for some people, and I often wish it was in 3d. Combat often makes me wish that I could rotate the camera and zoom in some more, especially during bigger fights. It is reasonably pretty and serviceable for the most part, but I see it as a (not very significant) weak point.
But Avellone and his team have proven that even in the 21st century a well written game doesn't need cinematic cutscenes, body language, facial expressions and extensive voice acting to tell a story. Those things are helpful to enhance good writing, as classic PC RPGs and console game of the 8 - 32 bit era show, they are not necessary. They also can not make up for ocassional bouts of terrible writing (like pretty much all of Iron Bull's dialogue in DA: I).
It is the writing that matters, and on this front the game far outclasses every single other game I have ever played. Although I haven't met all recruitable characters yet, those I have met are very intriguing. Do yourself a favor and speak to Durance about the region and history when you meet him. My jaw figuratively dropped to the keyboard when the crazy bastard started talking about the war. It is sometimes a bit heavy on the exposition and treats the pc as an ignorant foreigner to the world That can be forgiven, considering the fact that I'm playing a freed slave from another country, but it's still not the most elegant way to build a world.

All the flaws are tiny, and while they make the game fall a bit (just a bit) short of perfection, it is still closer to a 10 than a 9. This is a masterpiece. It may be Obsidian's best game yet, it may be the best RPG that has ever been made. It is definitely the best RPG (and maybe the best game) for over a decade. It is not an unofficial Baldur's Gate sequel in 2015. It is better than that. A great game in its own right with an added nostalgia bonus for those old enough to remember the classics.

I'd say it easily stands alongside the likes of Baldur's Gate I & II and Planescape Torment, and that's not something I would just throw out there without serious consideration.

    - The mechanics are wonderfully crunchy while still being very accessible to newcomers to the genre. Character creation isn't obtuse and fraught with mechanical pitfalls, nor is it limiting or simple; there are a huge number of diverse and viable builds. The combat is engaging, through-and-through, and it's very satisfying every time I get a unique option in dialogue based on my characters build, which is surprisingly often, considering the huge variety of possible PCs.

    - The visuals are serviceable; that's the most I can say, really. A good art direction goes a long way for compensating for the relative weakness of the graphics.

    - I'm very impressed with the companion NPCs, and although I really wish they'd banter with each other more, they each have their share of interesting dialogues with the PC. I definitely can't see myself ever replacing them with a custom-made party, even after a few playthroughs.

    - The setting. I'm in love with the setting; the races, the nations, the history. It's very thoughtful and rich in detail. I've been soaking up every bit of background lore I can, and I usually don't have the attention span to do that in these games since I tune out the moment things start feeling too dry. I can't say that it's *all* absolutely revolutionary, but it's a well-executed fantasy setting with some extremely novel stuff that puts it above a lot of the other toothless, bland stuff in the genre.

The story is 100% worth experiencing and is pretty close to Planescapes Experience if you enjoyed that classic. The sidequests can be engrossing and feel as detailed as the main campaign at times. Tasks are your fetch/kill/item quests for extra xp, so the three tiers of quest types cover all the usual ground.
I am loving the companions, Obsidian have always made well written characters. Durance is probably my favourite so far. WHORES!!!
Combat is fairly clunky but provides a challenge and a lot of patience late in the game on normal to hard difficulty. I played for a good 10 hours or so on hard but switched down to normal to experience the game over the engine issues that need fixing. No doubt various balance patches will come out for this. Obsidian are hardly known for their clean bugless games on launch..historically their QA department are a bunch of clowns, which is a shame considering how good their game design can be.
I would say the only flaw (albeit a subjective one) is that Obsidian did make some progressive choices with NWN2 with regards to game performance (faster loading or no loading when moving upstairs in a building etc. For some reason they have regressed to having a loading screen for every map change similar to Baldurs and Icewind Dale engines. While I realise this is a nostalgia trip for some, to completley dismiss advances of modern tech to cater to some purists is an oversight in the long term now you're marketing to people beyond the backers.
Eitherway, I am loving my experience of this game and purposefully have said nothing about the plot.

Today, many games are developed while the greedy publisher is influencing many design decisions and the developers can't make many of the changes they desire to make in their games because they have to get the constant approval of the publisher.

Here ,the developers had all the freedom they needed to create the game they wanted to and were only influenced by the fans themselves. This by itself is a practice that deserves all the praise and support any devoted gamer should give. It might help in changing this twisted money grabbing industry and encourage more publishers to include the fans themselves in the development process and to give developers more freedom to create the games they envision.

    Plain and simple:
It's an rpg, a trip back to the glory days, when games where made to entertain and not turned into franchises with season passes, ingame Shops, day 1 dlcs etc.
And nothing like Bioware's dating simulators of late.
Great times, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2, now Pillars of Eternity and Torment on the horizon.

It will look great 10 years from now just like the way BG2 continues to look neat even now.

For me, the tactical combat that this style of game brings to the table is what really sets it apart from other games. I have been craving a game like this for a long time and it's nice to see one come around that has great dialog options with a meaty campaign that gives the gamer a reason to replay the game again and again. I am glad to see a game that doesn't focus on the social element of gaming for a change. So now that I played about two months without losing interest, I'm writing again. First, if you don't like reading, this game isn't for you. But if you do, it's a very welcome light at the end of the tunnel of the so called AAA straight to console feces on a silver platter you get served so often these days.

In fact, the Obsidian team is the only studio that never dissapointed me. They seem to be still hungry and invested in their products. As opposed to the empty suits being at the helm of the big shareholder companies. The story isn't original, but I don't expect a game narrative to be the next great novel. You can have an influence and you always feel to be part of the world, which ultimately, is all that I expect from a game.

There are bugs, make no mistake about that, but the team is constantly working on ironing out the flaws and adding some additional balance fixes to the different classes and spells. So they don't let you stand in the rain and listen to the community. There are also some real issues I have with this game. Such as guards not reacting to fights right under their noses. But all this doesn't take away the impression of this being something great and having every potential for expansions.

So, all in all, if you like a good old school RPG, are not afraid of reading and don't fall for the shiny factor so many games put before content these days, consider giving Obsidian your money. At least side quests are quests and not a glorified FedEx simulator of fetch and carry. And don't compare it to Baldur's Gate. It's a game in it's own rights and has nothing to do with D&D rulesets for starters. These comparisons are quite asinine as most coming from game magazines is today.

It has many of the things that we loved about the BG games, the IWD's, and even Planescape Torment. You can totally control a party of up to 6. The class, race, spell, ability, build choices/combinations are almost as vast as they were in Baldurs Gate. The dungeons drip with atmosphere. Many of the quests are quite good. Level advancement is old-school slow, rewarding and allows you to choose how you advance your build in a way I haven't seen in any RPG in a really *really* long time. The UI is slick and intuitive - gloriously designed for PC. The bestiary is suitably large and varied. The attention to detail *everywhere* is unmatched..

It's just a flat out solid game.

...With a few glaring flaws (at least in light of the very games the Kickstarter pitch name-dropped and claimed to take cues from).

--Loot itemization is bland. and soulless. And unmemorable. Remember when your party found The Wolf Talismen in Icewind Dale? or Carsomyr in BG2? Or Bassilus's Hammer in Bg1? Yeah. That doesn't happen in this game. The labor of love simply isn't there with the magic loot.

-Combat is dull. I get what they were trying to do by eliminating the ability to pre-buff, and incorporating an engagement mechanic, as designing spell and ability durations to last 2 or 3 seconds. But it just doesn't fit. The IE games weren't action RPGs. But this game tries to be.

-I don't have much to say about the story, because I didn't understand it. I'm sure it was excellent (this is an Obsidian game we're discussing), but the way the game dumps its lore on you, and the overly cryptic delivery of its narrative resulted in me not understanding what's going on, and consequently not caring about it.

-The pacing. Ok this is the reason I'm giving PoE a 7 instead of a 9 or 10. The pacing in this game was terribly amateurish. You're either tirelessly engaging in combat every time you take a step, or else exploring whole districts of a city without engaging in any combat whatsoever. There's no in between. The plot delivery is, again, also wonkily passed (is that a word?) There's no slow dip to the lore and plot (like there was in the BG games and in Planescape torment). Instead, It's dumped on you at an incomprehensible rate....and then it's not. There's no in between.

Overall though, this is a *good* game. And a long one. (took me 100 hours to complete). Probably the best game Obsidian's ever made. I'll take another!

I played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2. These two sagas are the best thing I ever played on pc. Now I must add at these two even Pillars of Eternity.

It's an amazing game, period. I hope to see future expansions and sequels.

Arcanum still remains the best RPG for me but I'm happy to see new lore. The graphics in this game is amazing! I don't understand people that says it's mediocre because I understand how much work the put in and it shows : every weapon is made with detail and care, the background , 3D models and lightning looks amazing. Another great thing it's the option to increase the size of the text : I played it at 130% because it has a lot of text and it's really great to not have to stare at the monitor or TV in order to read it with ease. Recently found out that we have no low INT dialogue. I miss that.. Expand

Truly a successor of old school cRPGs. Incredibly beautiful locations, nice and stylish characters models and animations, captivating story with unexpected turns. All details in the game are done excactly as they should be done in a classic cRPG. By all means classic reborn and it's one of few true cRPGs in the recent times.

I'll admit I doubted the game a little leading up to it's release. It felt like everyone was looking at it through rose tinted glasses, and while this game absolutely fills those nostalgia feels, that's not why it's a great game. Both the writing and combat in this game are amazing. The locations are beautiful but it's the quality writing that just lets your imagination run wild. The story and it's side quests come together like a good book you just can't put down. As far as the combat goes it's some of the most rewarding I've played. The game is tough (quicksave often) and many encounters you may find yourself playing a couple times before you get through them. But that's not to say it's a grind either, it's just the right amount of challenge.

If you're on the fence about this game, get it. You won't be disappointed, plus it's entry price is 25% less than other new releases.

*Combat is challenging and tactical. You have to know your skills and party well and use them very cleverly in battle. You can die very easily but it's also very satisfying when you defeat a challenging situation in battle through good tactics.

this is the worst work around from Obsidian, and the farthest thing from a true RPG. Simply put, this subproduct is likable only to a minority of hardcore CCRPG players, more so if compared to modern masterwork DA: Inquisition.
It lacks the highly praised fetch FedEx quest system from DOA and Skyrim, as the popular dialogue wheel mechanism and the combat elements from another Bioware's master piece, Mass Effects 3, where gorgeous and complex button mashing mechanics make fights so brilliant. It lacks first-person shooting mode, QTEs and the mechanism of climbing tower to reveal map, and all the things a true RPG needs to be enjoyable.
Also, here comes back the annoying character stat building mechanism, and the boring concept of a concept plot ala P.Torment (another great failure) which gives player's frustration to recall memory about the main quest and story line. This is just an insult to all COD fans and action gamers, as well as any potential casual gamers. It diminishes the taste of all gamers around the world via greatly reducing its accessibility. It is a jerk of all trade. This is a game for no one.
You will hate the return of the old-school tactical view from the mediocre DA:Origins, which only hardcore players who appreciate pausing the game all the time, breaking the pace of combat. Friendly fire is enabled by default, making the game too easy.
Overall, by adding the complexity and annoyance of old-school RPG, removing the best elements from 2 most famous modern RPGs, as the exciting button mashing combat mechanics to the game, this game has reached the lowest low of RPGs that none in the world could ever reach. This is some anachronistic piece of garbage no one should care for.
