This is going to be a hard one.

My story is... I've seen people play this game, and then was gifted a copy of the game, and then caught up on the DLC with it... because it was insanely fun. Like, crazy insane. The game gets compared to Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 in terms of team play... but it's SWAT and special forces, not zombies. It's stealing and heisting and not just trying to survive,

Lots of choices in terms of cosmetics and of weaponry. Also a skill system that makes things very unique in terms of team play.

    So... the bad review?
For a game that has a straight up cost out of the gate, then five times that cost in terms of DLC just to make it feel like a full game and help the developers behind the game...
It's... literally, on the birthday of Payday 2, that Overkill has taken a gift box, and relieved themselves inside of it, then pushed it over to you with warm loving care. With the implementation of micro transaction and features that no one ever wanted in this game.

This -was- once a game I was begging Dad to play with me, and bought two copies to get friends in on... but now my two friends are turning away from playing the game, just as they were warming up to it a bit.

Real good job turning an enjoyable pass time of mine into something that nearly makes me relapse into a fit of fevers and illness...

Previously this game was quite a good time. Quality community, and for once I could play a game with no worries that it would burn an even bigger hole in my pocket.
Alas, with new micro-transactions and the stat boosts achieved from them, I can not recommend this game to anyone. Do not waste your time on this game.

Promising no microtransactions was as selling point. Now they've gone back on their word and shown they have no respect for their fans unless they're shelling out money on a regular basis.

I give the game a 1 because I really enjoyed playing it for a RIDICULOUS amount of hours.

Otherwise, I would've given it a zero due to it's current state. Do not buy drills, do not buy safes, demonstrate to Overkill it was a bad investment for them to lie to the community. AND in the future, NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER OVERKILL GAME AGAIN. They don't care about you. They'll act like

Game was great, now this microtransaction crap? 100+ dollars in dlc? dont make enough money? bull. I bought this game on sale last year durning crime fest. Was great put in 200 hours with in 1 month. Now, now I barely touch it cause all the dlc that came out made it more pricey. I go out of my way to look for key sites to buy dlc.

Payday 2 is a great multiplayer shooter, however its developers have decided its time to replace the veteran player base with the new one by allowing a 10 day free to play period with 75% off to sucker in a new player base. I'm very happy that the player base has grown but it wont be long until they realize that the new weapon balance nerfs weapons that were already weak and overpowers weapons like pistols.

A good example would be the long sword from the Chivalry Gage DLC VS the Katana from the Yakuza DLC, they both now have the same status except the long sword has a 4 sec charge up and the katana has a 3 sec charge up but the katana swings like mad were the long sword takes a whole second to swing making the long sword utterly useless and now is only used when getting an achievement, after that it may as well be a paper weight.

If you thought of doing stealth heists with other player on some maps forget it, there's still bugs up the @$$ so your better off solo stealthing negating any reason to play online. And the desync and net-code hasn't improved at all, worst you wont know how bad your connection is with the host because they couldn't be bothered to add a ping display, and when it is bad enemies will phase through walls and shot at you when their either not around the corner or shot at you through the walls when they haven't pulled themselves into view through a window all the way making death-wish impossible for anyone using an armor build.

To begin with, there is an excessive amount of DLC for the game, with almost every update only adding new content in the form of DLC. In addition, weapon balance has been all but ruined, and lastly the game has been given an (unoriginal) micro-transaction system ripped straight from CS:GO in almost every aspect. The micro-transactions wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that they have stat boosts.

In about 6 months time, I bet you won't even be able to unlock weapon slots for in-game money, that will be a micro-transaction. And re-spawning when in custody? Yeah, if you pay $0.99 USD you can re-spawn instantly.

2 years of broken promises, unfixed bugs, and a basic inability to care about the community means that this game joins the ranks of so many other games with toxic developers. Time after time we have been challenged to do a lot of things for free content, only to find that free content to be Bug Fixes and Quality of Life updates. If that wasn't enough, for an ONLINE MULTIPLAYER game, the2 years of broken promises, unfixed bugs, and a basic inability to care about the community means that this game joins the ranks of so many other games with toxic developers. Time after time we have been challenged to do a lot of things for free content, only to find that free content to be Bug Fixes and Quality of Life updates. If that wasn't enough, for an ONLINE MULTIPLAYER game, the desync is horrible, and the developers refuse to acknowledge it even after having the game out for two years.

What they do acknowledge on the other hand, is that you have to pay for the base game, pay on average $5 dollars for every one of their 27 DLCs, as well as paying a micro-transaction fee for an RNG change to get a skin so that you can boost guns that have been nerfed SPECIFICALLY to fit the micro-transactions.

Even if you buy the game and the DLCs at discount, you're still talking about $100 for a bug-filled, money grubbing game, on a completely antiquated engine (about 10 years old), Not only that, but the developers have shown time and time again their inability to connect to the players, or even reality hiding behind such excuses as "The people who complain are a vocal minority" (Because minorities don't matter, right?) and "If you really cared about the game, you'd forget your buggy console version that you bought and buy it again on the PC".

With the toxic developer, the tripple-dipping of base game fee, DLC and microtransactions, this is a game you should absolutely stay away from. You might not think it when you first get it, but at some point you'll be so tired of being lied to, that you'll be thinking "I wish I never bought this crap".

    Stay Away.

Also i like the feature that everything is customizable. Masks,Skills,Weapons and your armors. You choose how to play your game are you gonna go silent like a ninja or go BOOM like Rambo its totally up to you.

    Pros
Decent game that needs teamwork and strategy Totally customizable features, Awesome soundtracks.

    Cons
No cheat protection (got screwed by hackers once and had to reset my progress way back to level 0 when i was IV-100)
Still has lots of bugs (Bugs are not annoying they're minor bugs but they're still there)
Crashs every once a while (I bought a dlc cant play the dlc i bought contacted Overkill about it no one answered.)

These cons are about Overkill the company that made the game.

To-do list to successfully become one of the greediest and worst, but still overrated and loved developers on the gaming industry.

    - Create a grindfest with minimal content and charge $30 for it - Check.
    - Never improve the game's mechanics - Check.
    - Cut content from the game, sell minimal stuff and objects that you promised would be included with the game on release as overpriced DLCs - Check.
    - Create one of the worst communities on the gaming industry to support your greedy moves by creating a clan full of proud idiots and deleting/mocking posts criticizing your game (REMEMBER! If the community starts to revolt, release 1 or 2 small free DLCs to appease the rabble. Then you can continue to release paid DLCs) - Check.
    - Create a DLC that requires you to buy another game - Check.

EDIT: It seems some people didn't find this review to be helpful, so I will paraphrase.

Not a single DLC for PAYDAY 2 has been worth their price. Every single of the content they have released separately should have been implemented with the game at release. They don't improve the game, they don't care about their fans, they continue to sell overpriced DLCs to farm their customers. More than a third of the game's content is sold as DLC, the game's total price is gonna be more than $60 usd when this is all over. PAYDAY 2, a game with graphics from 2006, worse gunplay than CoD, tiny maps and short, repetitive missions is gonna make you pay more than $60 to unlock it's whole content. Do YOU think you should support these kind of developers? When you realize you have to buy another game to unlock the DLC's whole content, do you feel incentivized to buy it? Do you want to keep being scammed by OVERKILL and Starbreeze?

    Overall
Awesome game with worst developers i have ever seen in my life. Critizing them or anyone related to Overkill in their forums apperently a deadly sin. They say "You're agressive" And lock your thread sometimes they even ban you from forums.Buy the game love the game but dont waste a single cent to dlcs dont support the company.Overkil is the indie version of Ubisoft.

UPDATE : Banned Permanantly from forums because I spoke my mind. But I am Grateful that some people has finally woken up from their sleep and realized what kind of company overkill actually is. Thank you overkill for achiving the impossible, Because no matter how much I tried I just couldnt get people to understand me, But now They do. You tried to hide your true face by deleting ANY negative comments and critizings towards overkill Just to reveal it yourself. I am the most happy person in the World now. Call Me hater all you like people are finally AWAKE!

Was this game great at one time? Absolutely.
Is it worth your money now? Heck no. Stay away. You'll just end up having to spend even more of it anyways.
Should you support this developer? I would suggest the opposite. I would suggest not buying a single thing from Overkill and spreading the word far and wide to others not to pick up anything from Overkill Software ever. I obviously cannot control what choice you make, but this is a suggestion I highly recommend not just for the sake of your finances, but for the sake of the gaming industry as a whole. Do NOT let practices like this continue.

Game's not unpleasant, but shockingly overpriced and unbalanced. Fun mechanics buried under too many updates.

Shooting's fun, special enemies are decent. Matchmaking isn't dreadful. Unlocks, microtransactions and DLC work like a free-to-play MMO. Payday 2's turned into the sort of game you need to make your full time job.

The game WAS good, the problem was the developers at overkill who lied to the community. Don't buy this game or any game made by Overkill. I paid for all the DLCs (now worth over 100$) and they STILL add microtransactions AND defend them. Payday 2 WAS good and I'm hoping will be again. But until then, this review will stay at 0.

Okay, so I put in a thousand something hours into this game, and I enjoyed it. It was great. Wonderful game. Really solid gunplay, amazing music, interesting theme, and engaging level design. Never have holding off waves of enemies been such a fun experience. Usually doing that in games is boring and/or frustrating as all get out, but PAYDAY 2 found a way to make it work, and work REALLY well.

So what happened to get this negative review? Long story short: the updates. People began to note that with each passing DLC there was a sort of power creep going on. A pay to win system. Now the latest update promises weapon rebalances to fix this issue as part of this massive community event where we completed challenges for free rewards. What happened instead? Weapons were further nerfed and a microtransaction model was implemented. Get a safe at random and then pay a fee of real world money to get a drill to unlock the safe to get a random skin. Sounds familiar? CSGO and TF2 did the same thing with their key system. Only difference here is that the skins enhance your stats.

So what did this update the community have to work for and were promised a free reward turn out to be? Your guns are rendered useless and the only way to buff them back to where they were before, which means still a power creep and paid DLC guns are still superior, is to spend even more money to have a CHANCE at fixing your loadout. That's BS. What is also BS is that prior to release the company stated in an interview when asked if PAYDAY 2 will have microtransactions, "No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No." But wait, that came from someone who left the company! I hear you, I understand. Here's a link to a statement from Almir Listo, who is still at Overkill and working as the unofficial PR guy because Overkill won't hire a real one for some reason. This update has turned them into liars.

"Wait wait wait, Bandana Dee," I hear you saying. "Not all the guns were nerfed. Some of them were buffed." Indeed, buffed to ridiculous extremes. For example, pistols are now doing three times the damage shotguns are. This is its own problem. As stated earlier, there was a powercreep going on. It has gotten so much worse now, with specific items at least. The balance has been thrown out the window. So how do you catch up your nerfed weapons to be back where to were, much less on par with the other weapons that were buffed to high hell? Skins! Pay up and MAYBE you'll see your gun marginally improve.

Nerfing weapons to hell and putting buffs to them behind a gambling paywall is wrong.

Buffing weapons to the point that the game is completely unbalanced and Bulldozers, this game's version of COD MW's Juggernauts, are able to be killed in 3-5 headshots and the effect where their mask flies off from the damage taken simply doesn't work anymore is also a game killer. You don't really have a game anymore. Just something to throw money at.

EDIT October 20, 2015: As of today, the option to unlock drills from a card drop has been added. Now there is a free alternative to the new microtransactions. However, this does not change the fact that Overkill lied to the community about this in the first place and are still refusing to speak to us about it. Additionally, we were not informed of a droprate for the drills (just because technically we can get one doesn't mean we will. Technically I could win the lottery. Technically I could survive a gunshot) and Overkill has yet to issue an apology on the lie, making this update send more of a message of "Fine then, here's an alternative. Now will you shut the hell up and stop lowering our score and getting us bad press coverage?"

EDIT October 25, 2015: Almir Listo has made multiple statements today that both the microtransactions AND the stat boosts on skins are here to stay. He has expressed disbelief that people are upset at him for going back on his word and adding microtransactions, and despite the shocking drop into red zone territory on Metacritic and the drop of about 22% score on Steam within a single week, as well as the huge backlash on reddit, the forums, and even gaming media, maintains that the people complaining are a vocal minority. And that "statistically" "from an economic standpoint" the microtransaction update has been very profitable, so it won't be changed. He has just plain out admitted that he doesn't give a damn about the community, all that matters is he's making a quick buck.

When asked about the issue of safes unlocking skins for weapons that you can't use without spending additional money on DLC (yes, this is a thing), he says it won't be addressed unless the statistics show it's a "common enough" issue. Okay, what constitutes "common enough?" In my book, having an issue happen just ONCE where you have to spend additional money just to use the skin you spent money on, is "common eno

I didn't mind all the DLC 100%. It did bug me, admittedly, I never liked staring at a mostly blacked out in-game store of weapons I couldn't get because I didn't own the DLC. But it got worse, so much worse, when they threw in microtransactions and stat boosts. This isn't a freemium game, this isn't a free to play where these kinds of things to support the devs are okay. I'm getting real tired of seeing reviews with people saying "This used to be a great game". Payday 2 was never a great game. It was never even an acceptable game.

From its constant desync, to endlessly recycled maps with minor changes in objectives and slow updates (Both from Overkill and the community modders), to its horrendous playerbase of unreliable, half-blind fools with no reflexes or sense of awareness, to its never-ending flood of overpriced DLC that you MUST buy, unless you want 75% of the games content to be locked out for you. This game was rubbish from day one. It had potential, sure, but it never lived up to it. Overkill showed us what path they were going to take with this game pretty early in its life and they never tried to hide it.

These microtransactions are bad, yes. People are hurt about the broken promises and I completely understand why this is the breaking point for a lot of people. Personally I couldn't care less about those stat bonuses on skins, because you already have to pay more than what the game is worth, in DLC packs, just to keep up with other players anyway. The game always has been "Pay to win". But my father always thought me that you don't break your word to someone. If you make a promise to somebody, you keep it. Overkill are on record as having said at least 3 or 4 times that they would never add microtransactions to PD2, one time even saying "Shame on you if you thought otherwise", but they didn't keep their word. I don't know how things are in Sweden, but I can safely say that in most places on Earth, your word, your promise about something, means a lot, and if you break a promise to somebody they are going to be upset. Now, combine that with how upset the PD2 community already was about the DLC releases. Every time one was released, the PD2 Steam Group would get bogged down with angry comments and spam from people who clearly have been very unhappy with Overkill for a long, long time. Payday 2 has hit rock bottom here, as well as in Steam reviews. This is what happens when you break promises, keep brushing aside community complaints and adding new systems people don't want. I call it “Star Wars Galaxies Syndrome”.

I realize the game was different to other shooters, and it still is somewhat unique, but that doesn't make it a good game. It was built on an unstable base, and it has been falling apart for a long time now. Personally, I gave up on the game back with the Hypetrain event. Do you remember that? When Overkill promised that we'd all get free content if we BOUGHT ENOUGH DLC DURING THE EVENT? Including a $20 DLC pack that was released just for that event! Don't forget all the masks that don't cover your face anymore, the particle effects Ala TF2, the Overkill pack adding a Minigun and an RPG-7, and even a mission to steal nuclear weapons to sell to terrorists. The sense of being a classy bank robber, a James Bond turned evil character, is long dead in favour of the sense of being a low-moral terrorist. That was the moment the game died for me and my only regret is that some people still don't see how bad the game was before these microtransactions were added.

Summary: This game was never great. If I had a drill for every time a cloaker one-shot me through a wall or a floor, or for every time I've been pinned by a tazer when he had no line of sight with me, I'd have enough money to buy Overkill.

Then crimefest came along with its 'FREE' 10 day content event, featuring microtransactions on the first day which were originally stated to never happen.

Now Overkill have resorted to microtransactions, where players can purchase skins for the guns similar to CS:GO. Sounds fun doesn't it? How can that be a bad thing, you might think? Well, unfortunately these skins give stat boosts to the player's weapon. It doesn't matter if you have the same gun with the same modifications as someone else, if their gun is painted purple and yours isn't, they have an advantage.

A month after crimefest and the microtransactions disaster and what happens? Overkill updates their microtransactions system by allowing some skins to even provide an experience and money boost. Not only that, the boost stacks if other players also have a skin which provides boosters.

TL;DR: Overkill are not the be trusted. Game is pay to win. Stay away.

It was funny for the first 30 hours. Then I realized I wasted $30 usd on an arcade shooter of killing retarded cops for the sake of lvling and getting enough money for doing "Infamy", which is almost the exact thing that "Prestige" from CoD. You loose all your money, your level is reset to 0 and you can start lvling again. All for a mask and a supposed "buff" that gives you nothing.

It's not funny. The whole game is based on hooking you to grinding exp and money. Heists are boring, limited and repetitive, with re-used maps and repetitive objectives. There used to be a simple stealth system that was rather fun and gave actual replay-ability to the game. You could challenge yourself and solo-stealth missions on the highest difficulty just by being level 35 or so and by having the right gear. After Update 24, the "Death Wish update", stealth and low levels got almost completely ruined. You can't solo stealth most missions now (and there aren't many missions), hell, you can't stealth most missions now, period. Low levels got ruined because of the new exp system, which is BS.

Want more BS? There's no anti-cheaters protection. This game is swarmed by hackers. But I personally don't care. They actually enhance the game rather than annoy the community. They give tons of money and can make you lvl up fast if you're good to them, plus they can start custom game modes like pvp or a boss fight with a powerful Bulldozer and his henchmen.

OVERKILL keeps saying they care about their community, but the proof they give is different. They keep releasing weapon pack DLCs with items that should have been included in the game and they barely release new, innovative maps. Grenades, which come in the "Gage weapon pack #1" and are very useful, are worth $5. And you buy that pack only for the grenades, the other content sucks. It makes me wonder sometimes if this is a p2w game and if they ruined stealth in purpose so you would go loud and buy their DLCs.

Overall, this is not the big game of robbing big banks with lots of preparation, planification, etc we were promised. This is the lvling game. You play a lot to level up, or you hack and become bored when you find out there's not much to do on the game when you're level 100.

Let's get the positives over with. This game fills a niche market; a game where you get to play as a criminal with very specific skills and profiles. I know you may be thinking GTA at the moment but Payday is very different. Not being an open world game, Payday focuses on the jobs and heists themselves. You and a four person crew work together to hold off police forces while accomplishing goals and gaining assets. There is also a fleshed out skills system in which you customize your characters abilities and fighting style. For a long time this was the best game for anyone who loves heist movies and wanted to experience the thrill of criminal enterprise without all the jail time.

Now for the negatives. This game has always been buggy and the graphics are below average at best. The AI has always been awful, demanding that you play with other people; any hopes of playing by yourself will be quickly shut down. While these were relatively minor issues, because Payday 2 is constantly being updated, problems have cropped up. One can easily spend over one hundred dollars on DLC for this game, some of which is needed to stay competitive. DLC's show no sign of slowing with a new one being introduced nearly each month. Micro-transactions are also part of the game costing $2.50 for a gamble on a new weapon mod each time. One can't help but wonder if the studio has squandered all its profits on a hugely successful game and are now bailing out a sinking ship. The point is that Payday 2 certainly looks to be on the decline and isn't worth consumers' funding any longer.

As another note, any potential buyers should understand that the older any reviews are, the more unreliable they get, due to the nature of this constantly updated game. The newest reviews are all going to be the most accurate to the game as is it right now.

Microtransactions are the worst thing that Overkill could have added. Not that they are bad in principle, but when they offer STAT BOOSTS?!? That is where I draw the line. I will not play the game again until they are only cosmetic or removed entirely

Micro-transaction BS was added. The game is Payday 2 GO. DO NOT BUY THE GAME. DO NOT BUY DRILLS TO OPEN SAFES. DO NOT BUY DLC FROM OVERKILL. If you see this add another negative user review.

Ive been playing for awhile and really did enjoy the game. And usually updates are a great thing, but they kept adding $5 after $5 after $5 dlc's, that really shouldve been free. Now microtransactions? No thanks.

I've been playing this game on and off since its launch. I don't have nearly the amount of time most of its veterans do, only a meager 200 hours clocked on steam.

Payday 2 started out as a fairly solid coop-experience, there was stuff to do, things to earn, it was a great game at launch and the several DLCs following. It had a very fair pricing model, only the party leader required to buy the DLC so the whole party could play. But as time went on, and more of the core founders of OVERKILL left, things started looking grim. More paid DLC was pushed through faster, often adding very little to the game. The community events started to take a turn for the worse, focusing on raising money and advertising partnerships instead of celebrating the the fans or improving on the game.

Ultimately the game became a gigantic grind, a handful of missions were always the best to run to min-max rewards. And when they promised to rework the infamy system once more, all we got were additional levels that served no use in game-play other than to distract the completionists for a few more weeks.

The final straw was Crimefest 2015, an update touted to be free to play for all, with an event leading up to its release featuring challenges and rewards for the community as a whole to unlock. Instead they chose to add pay to win elements to the game, and not only that. Ones you would have to gamble for. Unlike TF2 or CSGO where skins are purely cosmetic, in payday 2 they have the ability to roll random bonus stats and modifications. There is no trade system and some of the skins are for DLC weapons only, leaving some player stuck with skins they have paid for that they are unable to use unless they shell out more money for the paid weapon packs.

Rightfully so, the community has been outraged. The developers remain silent instead of trying to resolve the issue or reassure people its being looked into. Given the track record with the current staff of OVERKILL, it comes as little surprise they would do something so controversial. After two of the three founders of the company left to persue other careers there has been a history of lies, half-truths, and selling out the players best interest for every penny.

Unfortunately between the horrible update design, developer silence, and previous experiences, I will not be playing this game or any other game from Starbreeze studios or OVERKILL software in future. Nor would I recommend their games to you or anyone who will listen. They do not value their players time, devotion, or even money.

Payday 2 is a fun game marred by the greed of a company that thinks it's okay to drop more than $100 in DLC onto its customers on a regular basis, only to then convert their game into a microtransaction-heavy affair where you have to pay money for "skins" that grant better stats to your weapons. Stay away from this game.

I had to buy the game again because they refused to support the older-gen port.
Then, I bought the COPack to keep the game's policy at a state of "Paid DLC is necessary" and "We do Free DLC as often as we can"
I also bought it knowing that Overkill was an indie dev, had new concepts like Safehouse Customization, and wouldn't have microtransactions. Currently, all of those are wrong.

Don't forget grinding to unlock "free" content which was really paid.
Or having to sell ourselves out like a mobile game to unlock content.
When that backfired, they called the community out on not liking that, and claimed that even though I "Didn't donate, I supported" them, I didn't REALLY understand how much the Voice Actors did for Payday 2.

I used to like to play this game, but the direction the Overkill came taking is affecting the game.

All we get are more and more paid DLC, some being totally clueless (maybe funny?).

The OVERKILL crew wants to get ALL your money by all means. 100$ + micro-transactions for skins that change weapon stats is the worst marketing idea ever.
Playing the game be ready to deal with desynch that makes coop stealth impossible, bugs, and disbalance (coz DLC weapons are 200% better than vanilla).

Guess honesty is not something Overkill practices given that it was just announced.Going the CSGO way of releasing skins in safes that can only be unlocked by using drills that cost 2.5 euro/dollars and have to be bought specifically from Overkill. This is despicable, not only because of the previous promises of no microtransactions, but also because these skins unlike in CSGO make weapons BETTER.

So basically now anyone that wants to have the best weapons in the game needs to pay Overkill and hope to get the right skins, wich is dependant on alot of luck, but also once they get them run around the game with weapons that looks like childrens toys.

I will not tell anyone NOT to buy this game, that is a choice people have to make on their own, but I will advice everyone considering it to read up on the events of Crimefest 2015. The lies and deceit from the developer prove that they hesitate at no turn to screw over their customers if it makes them another buck. It makes me sad to see the game go this way, since I have played well over 1000 hours and had alot of fun, and now it has come to an end and the company is even trying to tell everyone that "it is a reward, you should be happy that we are **** you in the ass without lube using a barb-wire wrapped baseball-bat", although I will admit that they might have used slightly different wording.

Hopefully the staggering amounts of negative criticism from the community makes Overkill realize their misstakes before it is far to late, because at this rate the game will soon be dead.

PayDay 2 is one of the nicest surprises of the year. Overkill Software understands the atmosphere of gangster movies and wisely improves these pieces of gameplay, that might have been disappointing in the first game. The sequel is better in almost every way - you can play a thief and enjoy good character development and shooting systems. I really hope, that PayDay 3 will be even better.
