Outward is harsh and occasionally frustrating, but it does what so few games do. It requires you to put real thought into the choices you make, and it makes those choices feel like they really matter. Most of all, it makes you approach each and every encounter as if your life depended on it—even though you never die.

Outward is a fun and unique experience for those who desire the harder type of gameplay reminiscent of Souls like games.

This is a great choice of old-school RPG fans, with many, many good ideas, and only a few issues preventing it from being something excellent.

It's still a solid playthrough and unique enough to consider worth experiencing -- especially with a friend. The best case scenario is that Outward serves as a successful proof-of-concept that leads to an experience down the road that hits a bullseye where Outward just narrowly missed the mark.

Taken as a whole, Outward practically screams "cult classic." Its consistent challenge, cumbersome combat, and co-op systems won't resonate with everyone. But for a particular type of player—ones that don't mind trading dozens of frustrating moments for open-ended experiences—Nine Dot Studios' RPG is sure to find a dedicated audience. Outward's aspirations are commendable, but just like its protagonist, the end result is just average.

Nine Dots Studio's RPG will appeal to people who love fiddly systems and have enormous patience. But if that isn’t you then it'll simply feel like a time drain.

Oh and its split screen coop! As a 90's gamer this is a dream come true. No transactions, no pay to play. What a refreshing approach in a market flooded with underwhelming £50 AAA games that take 7 hours to finish.

Great idea, a ton of fun. I wish there were more games made like this. While it is missing some AAA graphics and flair, the overall gameGreat idea, a ton of fun. When playing it tugs at my old memories of playing Morrowind or dungeons and dragon adventures with a group of friends.

This game expands beyond the generic standard of most fantasy games, reaching more for the outlandish, strange, and mysterious art direction. Exploration and experimentation are by far the biggest draws in this world. You don't "level up" but instead gather knowledge from across the land and through training. Your power is solely dependant on your knowledge, your equipment, and your preparation.

Combat is simple, feeling clunky at first, yet it does have a finesse to it that when mastered you can show off a dance of death to whatever challenges you.

This game is not for those who want to dive in and zoom through the experience. It's complex, slow-paced, and deeply immersive by design. Also a word of advice, there is no such thing as being too prepared in this harsh world.
