There have been lots of very negative reviews. While I can certainly sympathize with those who have technical issues with the game I can't subscribe to the point of view that this is in any way a bad game. The gameplay is paper thin, and this is disappointing, but the game has been about exploration and it still delivers on that promise. I would have given the game a 8/10, but I added one point to do my part in offsetting the angry mob.

If it weren't for the bad optimization, it would have been a good game for 20 minutes and half the price...
I might play it again once it gets fixed, though i doubt that ill enjoy it. Everything is the same.

I don't know what it is about this game but despite the simplistic play style and overly repetitive worlds I can't not play it. I go to play other games and with in 20 minutes I'm back on No Man's Sky trying to find something new I suppose. There is a rush when you actually find or see something cool, and I feel like a lot of bad remarks come from people simply not knowing all you can do in the game. For example those pods with lasers spewing out of them towards the sky; if you create a by pass chip they'll give you way points to various things, from extra inventory slots to bits of lore. This game really needs some more content however and hopefully with in a year we'll be looking at a totally different game. I would personally like to see some sort of terra-forming and base creation, as well a better map and ways to connect to other players. Think of it as a mine craft where you're attached to the entire world and other people can land on a planet you've been too and gaze at structures you built. In addition perhaps some RPG elements could really help this game out, the ability to truly have different classes, a real in game economy, and some actual affiliation with different groups. Even making this into a 3D version of the palm classic Space Trader would be great. Ultimately this is a good foundation that could with a lot of work be made into something incredible.

On the technical side of things, simply editing the max FPS rate and turning off v-sync fixed all my performance issues. It is not a breathtakingly stunning game either, but if they added more content that wouldn't matter. Music isn't that spectacular either.

For now I will continue to play and enjoy this game myself as I let my imagination run wild, but I will not recommend this game to anyone. Perhaps for around $15 bucks I'd say, "Yeah if you have every other game around 15 bucks and you need to buy something." I hope to be able to amend this review in a few months time.

You see hundreds of reviews that say this game is awful. That it does not run. Its all BS. The first time i launched the game, i started on a planet next to my ship, but decided i'd turn the settings up to the max. I got a little bit of stutter after restarting my game, then all of the sudden my frame rate stuck right around 140-144 matching my monitors refresh rate. I was surprised considering 90% of the reviews said it only got 30 on a good day. The game looked great, the planet i was on was full of life, its just great! I've played around 30+ hours so far and have warped 20+ times. I cant put it down, and once i figured out the basics, which did take me a little while, but once i did, it was great. Most people haven't even played long enough to actually get into it, they play for a few hours and go to a few planets and boom their bored, obviously not the game for them. There is always something new to do, with objective. I sometimes spend hours just colecting rare resources from a hostile planet to save up for a new ship, or just to build my wealth to buy equipment to warp to different types of stars. There is no reason for the negative reviews, because you all bought this game knowing exactly what you were purchasing. Sean showed a lot more than i expected him to, but it was mainly to calm the Nancys. The game is simply art, and if you didnt buy it purely for exploration, then i dont know what the hell you were expecting and could care less if you put it down and didnt touch it again. Overall, i enjoy the game, i am addicted and thinking about buying a gaming laptop so i can play it while at work, because once you get hooked, your hooked. Also, everyone needs to stop comparing it to other games, because this is nothing like other games, nor is it trying to be, your reviews are irrelevant. From what i saw in trailers, video game play and everything sean has said about the game, it is exactly what i pictured it would be, so if you were dissapointed than you clearly didnt read up on what you were buying. Good day nubs. Check out some screen shots ive taken here

The ammount of lyes around this game before the launch is tremendous. People need to know that besides them liking the game this is a scam, and supporting this kind of crap leads to more crap in the future. This game has been selled like a AAA game being an Alpha indie one. Hello Games doesn't deserve any money.

Moving in this game is incredible slow, when you run, it feels like sneaking in any other fps game. Alt + Tab not working, poor optimization, boring gameplay.

An obviously incomplete game. If this had launched as early access for $15-$20 I could see rating it around a 6 or 7. At $60, it's a rip off. It's a great explorer sim but is no where near polished enough from a user experience or performance perspective to sell for full AAA prices yet. In another 2-3 months the game could be polished to the point where it would be worth $40. In 6-12An obviously incomplete game. Again, should have launched in early access.

Issues I encountered in 3 hours of play time:
Corrupted save because I alt-tabbed out.
General confusion about what I was doing because the in game tutorial is so bad and the UI is not intuitive.
Have to restart to change settings. If you do this before saving the first time, you lose your progress and starting planet.
    Ship flying control is poor.

Keeping up with news on this game after launch has been less than promising as well. Already there are mentions of paid DLC in the future (maybe distant future, but still, finish the game first). Lots of promises and continued expectations by the community that the game will be finished AFTER launch. Temper your expectations for this game. Daily player numbers are dropping very fast according to tracking sites suggesting that this game does not have staying power.

Minecraft, meanwhile, actually does have multiplayer down to dedicated servers and we're going on the sixth (or so) year of free updates, while Sean Murray has already mentioned paid DLC for No Man's Sky.

Both of these games were completed at least a year before development on No Man's Sky even began. While the game has a very attractive visual style, gameplay ages quickly and dies sooner than the most banal 90s first-person shooter. To reward your efforts, the ending is an unironic next-decade version of Spore's, with a little bit more Arthur C. Clarke and a little less Douglas Adams.

This is not even getting into the massive technical problems that the launch is currently having, even on the most common hardware (hangups on 970s with modern drivers surely could have been foreseen even by an indie developer). The game deserves no more than a 2/10 and you should pay no more than 2/10 of the launch price for it.

The execution however is just lackluster, rushed or lazy, it's a console port with zero efforts going into the PC version.

After every graphic setting change you need to restart the game, the intro sequence already stutters and you have microstutters on a lot of actions in the game, textures load very late in a weird way, the resolution was poorly upscaled from the PS4 resolution and it makes the game look kinda blurry, the performance is just not acceptable for a PC game with these 2010 graphics.

Flying in this game feels like riding one of those automatic toy cars in front of shopping malls, you insert a coin and the thing is moving somehow, but only a kid would believe it is really steering and controlling the vehicle. You can't crash your ship, you can't fly close to the ground, you can't hit any rocks or buildings, you can't land on your own, it's an automated sequence, basically the game holds your hand the whole time you're flying, which completely kills the flying immersion for me.

Then the riddles, you have to solve them sometimes when unlocking new waypoints or targets. They're pretty much on 1st or 2nd grade level, it's always the same pattern. It's a number sequence that either adds, deducts or multiplies by 1,2,3,4,6,7.. or the other way round.

Ships, buildings and space stations in an infinite universe, you would expect them to look interesting and different, right? Well, they don't. There are like 5-6 different ship designs in the game ( with slight variations like color or inventory slots ) and all buildings and space stations look absolutely identical, at least from the inside. In an infinite universe with countless different intelligent species, this just doesn't make any sense.

A side effect of this, no planet you are exploring is actually unexplored, you are never the first one. There are buildings, ships, sentinels and structures on every planet or moon, nothing is unexplored.

My biggest gripe with this game is the flat-out lying about Multiplayer, that is just unacceptable. Sean Murray promised multiple times, that you can meet other players, turns out you can't. But not only did he lie about this aspect of the game, he simply refuses to address it, like some dodgy politician being in the business for 50+ years.

He lied about multiplayer, he lied about the formula they're using for the procedural generation, he lied about the engine they're using, he lied about some other missing features and he also lied to the people when showing the trailers for the game.

The game has been data mined already, and it turns out, that everything in the trailer was designed and scripted, there was no procedural generation at all.

There are times, where I have some joy with this game, the atmosphere of some planets is really relaxing, but this should have been a 10$ game, I regret not refunding this for this price.

I suspect this is what is causing the frame speed dips for people, despite them having powerful GFX cards.

Playability wise, the game is a little rough round the edges in places, but overall it is compelling. The procedurally generated landscape and creatures is the real star of the show, and it is impressive. The static content is less so.

I've had quite an emotional roller-coaster ride with this game. From feeling pure delight, boredom, then disgust and now having rather somber afterthoughts.

I enjoyed exploring my first few planets and naming my first few critters very much. Swimming, diving, jetpacking, spellunking and all that. At one point I climbed a mountain at sunrise and said to myself "this is the most beautiful view ever, what a game!"

I actually like the look of the game and I had great fun on the night of release.

Sadly, after exploring twenty more planets with different but somehow familiar looking creatures on them and appreciating the beautiful but similar vistas, I found the exploring part less and less thrilling. Not good when this game is all about exploring.

The game generously offers a gozillion worlds of this boring dejá-vu adventuring. Guess you could slog on for a while and end up with the meanest ship in the galaxy (and the biggest exosuit). But what's the point of that? In the end there is not much else to do...

The crafting, isnt it challenging or rewarding? Not pretty much so! Just collect, build and install upgrades that in many cases doesn't do squadoosh.

Compelling characters and interesting, scary or funny alien encounters? Nioerp! (Gek word)
Aliens and their culutures are fairly well done and they look ok, but posess no personality whatsoever. Furthermore there are only three species (and you) in the entire universe. What!?
(Now I will go into a bit of rant.)

Hey, how about "procedurally" (very fancy coding only known since the sixties), generate aliens instead?
No, that won't work, it'll still be the same old aliens' bodyparts combined in bizarre ways,

You should always look ahead, so perhaps in the distant future this game after patches and DLCs, will be more entertaining. We will see, but it's unlikely that I ever will consider NMS a great game.

For now it's massively overhyped and overpriced.

Don't go in to NMS expecting a combat experience of the like of Elite because that's not what the game is. NMS is a sandbox game where you make your story.

This game is about exploration and making up your own style of play. It has many survival elements and has very little hand holding, so it's easy to get yourself in a bind. The game is beautiful, like walking into a sci fi book cover from the 80's. the focus is on exploration and discovering

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not for everyone, many people will feel let down by this game and angered about the lack of content, performance issues etc. However, I lowered my expectations and found this game to be a complete blast to play. The fact that you can explore an "infinite" universe really blew my mind and I still find it fun to discover new planets, atlas interfaces and black holes. The space combat is great and poses a challenge to me. Some of the game can be a drag such as finding resources that are few and far between especially when I needed Zinc for a spacecraft and there was no flora on the planet so I had to find a trading post to get it which took ages :( . I was able to run the game at 1080p maxed out on a mid range gaming PC it just seems like pot luck for now whether it runs well. I also experienced lag spikes when entering a planets atmosphere. Hopefully this is fixed soon. Overall this is a great (but not perfect) game that will blow your mind if you know what to expect. Expand

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

It's partially broken, shallow, repetitive and aimless, but hang me, I still kind of love it. [Issue#255, p.56]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
