It's to note that most folks who rate the game good call the game an "exploration game". The procedural generation of planets and the few assets used in the game mean that planets are more or less the same, with minor varieties, which also means there is nothing really new "to explore" once you played the game, say, for 2 hours. You have seen everything. I can get a classic linear game such as Tombraider and there I can actually see and explore more things than in this game. Grinding down "quintilllions" of rather similar planets to mine resources simply is not fun. Also, some people complain "a lot of people expect the game to be something..that isn't'". Point is, for a whopping €60-€70 I do INDEED have a tons expectations on a game. For the same price I can get countless other games with immersive worlds and an incredible amount to see and to do...example again the latest iteration of Tombraider (or, just picking something randomly, FarCry 3 or FarCry 4) where the crafting and collection aspect alone is far better implemented, YET only a small part of a game. Here, it is ALL what the game is about based around a game which otherwise has very little depth and motivation to continue. Expand

OK. To start things off I was extremely excited for this game. The Hype was real. Did it stand up to it though? Personally I feel like this game is a breath of fresh air. From a medium overly saturated with shoot em' ups and developers who obviously really wanted to make a movies, and developers that treat its consumers as incompetent children who need their hand held at all times, I am over joyed to see a game like this release. YES, its missing content, YES, features got cut. that's just what happens in most forms of entertainment. for example movies will shoot these big expensive scenes that may not make the final cut. things like this happen all the time. Sean is the head programmer for the game, this is his baby. He doesn't want for people to be disappointed and angry. He is a much more genuine guy then people seem to give him credit for.

Is Sean deserving of death threats and hate over this? absolutely not. I 100% believe that when he told interviewers and also us as consumers that there would be X feature and Y feature, HE MEANT IT. He is not some evil man maniacally laughing with a wad of cash from his "lies".

All in all i personally enjoy the game and have put more than 50 hours into it so far. [planning on playing some more even tonight :)] Although I can also see why people would be upset and angry because the game may not have lived up to their expectations, and how could it? The things some people were expecting just aren't what this game is about. Sean made it very clear in the interviews closer to release on what the game was and wasn't. He even made a post on the games website on what to expect. So the insinuation of "lies" is absurd.

Feels like enough to 'do' to satisfy the occasional aimless wanderer, but not enough to immerse yourself into the galaxy's lore.

I adore this game, but it isn't for everyone. I benefited from not seeing much of the pre-release trailers.

After a few hours locations begin to repeat themselves. After several hours you'll start bypassing locations you already 'know'. And the same eventually becomes true of planets. But there isn't a game that offers what NMS does, for the first dozen-or-so hours of play-time.

Hopefully 'Hello Games' will release more locations, more generative mini-quests, and more easter-eggs to keep things enticing, as well as increased optimisation and unlock PC-options to, for example, heftily increase pop-in distances. Mods are already on the scene, and the modding community will probably 'finish' the game before anyone else does.

i wish i could be a meta critic so i could rate this game the worst possible. 64 isnt the quality of this game, its the number of lies sean murray told about it and the number of missing features shown in the game trailer still being shown on the steam page

I am glad that the Steam refund system exists. I fell for the hype. I was so prepared to play this with friends and journey into the vast and expanded unknown. But instead I was given a different game on release.

The gameplay: Ok the game play is **** It is fun for discover a planet (the first 10 planet) then go to pointless journey to the galactic core... Fight with enemy space ship is not fun. Fight with stupid sentinels not fun too. The behaviour of creatures on the planets are the same. No multiplayer just you can see other players dicoveries if you are very very lucky... this is **** pointless.

And finally the technical problems in pc... Huge framdrops and low framerate on a high and pc... this is a **** joke again... On a same pc run stable 80-90fps GTAV, 120fps Star Wars Battlefront, No Man's Sky runs 40fps with framedrops... and bugs with creatures stuck in land and others...

This is a halfdone INDIE! game from an indie developer team. max value on the market is free to play or max 5$ not 60$.

Shocking piece of crap this game is. I'm one of the thousands of people who got a refund through Steam after playing it for over 10 hours. Nothing but lies, damn lies from the devs. The $60 price tag was a complete joke. It was only worth $2.99 at the most!

    Hello Games = Goodbye Games!

Incredibly false advertising, gameplay is shallow and clunky, no multiplayer, etc. Steam trailers show the game as incredibly smooth and clean, with great multiplayer aspects. If you are on the fence about this game, don't get it, the devs flat out lied and avoided giving prerelease keys to critics to keep the atrocity that is NMS from being reviewed until people had already purchased it

I am giving this game 6/10. The game is overpriced for what it currently offers. I think 30 euros or 30 dollars would be a more correct price for this product.

I think the limited inventory space in this game is intentional, and makes you use your braines to think out whats important and what not. Perhaps u indeed have to trade more often at the start to empty your inventory.

The problem with this game, in my eyes, it becomes more of the same. There are only so much anomaly's availble in the game. Also upgrades don't come fast enough. After 15 hours I am still in my second ship and second multi tool( without using guides...). Their should be a bit more variation in the game to keep things interesting. I also dont feel a real connections with the backstory when I am running around on a planet.

This game had enormous potential. If the developer had kept their mouth shut instead of spewing lie after lie AND the game had been shipped at a reasonable price, say $20 - $30, then they'd be fine.

I can only agree that No Man's Sky needs a lot more work to be a masterpiece, though I cannot help but think that the game is still an incredible achievement, and I'm actually glad I bought it. I love to find that somehow special planet among all the other ones. I love the experience of being the first person ever to discover that particular planet. But perhaps that's just who I am - NMS makes me want to do stuff just for the sake of doing them.

The game just somehow went from overhyped to underpreciated in few days. It's a really good game that had an extremely blown out marketing. That pulled in a lot of people that weren's supposed to be its target, which results in a lot of criticism - some justified, some just extremely toxic and unnecessary.

I'm not giving this game a max grade because of two things - as I said, even though I enjoy the game, some aspects of it are really poorly executed. I hope that sonner or later the developers will come up with something to make the game more deep. I enjoy trading, crafting, fighting, learning languages - but I'd like to have more reasons to do so, or some more mechanics to delve into.

The second thing is the price. Way too high for any game, really. I bought Witcher 3 for a lot less in a cool box with map, stickers and plenty of stuff. I don't see anything about NMS that would justify being more expensive.

Don't waste your time or money, I sadly did both. The game falls short of what was promised and is filled with more bugs and boredom than content. The method of the story in this is intersting, you go looking for information on planets rather than being hand held through a lienar story, you pick up bits of information slwoly drawing the picture of the univierse and what has gone before.

The trading system is a bit of a mess and I hope that gets some love in the future but it is not essential to progression and the ship looks could do with some customise options.

It could also do with more content to help pass the time sometimes but they have a fairly good base game to build something wonderful on, I'm looking forward to see what they and the modding community does with this.

Bitter nerd rage is common on game releases these days but boy is it over the top for this one. I think it was mostly caused by the inexperience of the developer suggesting features before knowing for certain they could include them at release. Hopefully they'll learn from this and give a lot less information in the future and also be able to include them in future patches..

I fear that a lot of people expect this game to be something it isn't. If you can see it for what it is, it's a lovely, quiet, interesting game. It's not a AAA multiplayer genre-buster, it's something completely different and enjoyable.

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
