This is a great exploration game. The scope of play is amazing, and the lack of loading screens to go from one planet to another is unbelievable. While the graphics aren't super incredible, it looks beautiful due to the variety of the color scheme in the planets.

Exploring is the name of the game, and space travel is all I care for. People rib the game for being "pointless," but I'd argue it was a true space sim when it first came out. The universe is an empty place, why would it be filled with countless species?

This game is SO much fun and I will admit I love playing with my buds now, but I always understood and appreciated the game's original vision.

Hello Games really turned this project around. Game delivered on what was promised at this point in spades and much more. All other space exploration/crafting game devs should take a deep look on how to do project like this.
I would easily rate this game 10/10 but we should not forget the abysmal launch.
People should really take a fresh look at the game and if they like what HG did,

Personally I see a player expectation is to find unique or regular items and know what to do with it rather than storing it and guess for the future use, if you can't connect with real players or even influence on a particular space region and escalate some game thrills then what's the point of No Man's Sky ? after playing nearly 350 hours, I find many items I have collected have no use at all, you can't make a blue print to make new items or build something special, and I am still guessing even if this feature still available in No Man's Sky, well at the end it doesn't matter if you have unique stuff or not because there is no common goal to compete against other players.

I will give you a nice analogy with some metaphoric expression : No Man's Sky is an empty vacuum you just jump from a system to a system and wasting your time, by the time you play this game you get older and older and then your wife leaves you behind, sneaking, and sleep with other guys , while you are exploring some virtual planets building your virtual home for yourself alone like being disposed in this world.

To be honest, the game developers have no idea what's going on in real world, because they spend most of their time at the basement and isolated, alright, I respect their effort as they want to make some money but their concept about real world is entirely unrealistic.

I'm not here to talk about what it was. But to talk about what it is NOW.
    Positive points:
    - Bast game exploration.
    - Very good ship control. Simple but effective (and other vehicles with the same good feeling).
    - Lots of hours of campaign.
    - Good crafting system (very similar to Subnautica).
    - The design is unique in every single thing. The Ships and the weapons are especially cool.
    - Coop is now a thing. Very easy to spend hours making missions or building together.

    Negative points:
    - The shooting system in first/third person is the weakest point (I'm not including ships, that is very good indeed), the enemies are always the same and their skills are quite boring too.
    - Although it was (a lot) improved, the performance in PC could be better.
    - The planets could look the same after several hours of playing (despite you can get surprised anyway).
    - Living beings could be better. Is very usual to see animals that look like a... well... a d**k.
    - Sometimes you have too many missions in your list.
    - The inventory can be very short at first, and annoying to manage.

I put a 10 only because I think this game's rating needs to be balanced. In my opinion, it deserves from 7 to 9. Depending on your taste in games.
If you didn't like it at first, give Hello Games a second chance. They truly deserve it, seriously.

I think No Man's Sky is a great game. The graphics are impressive, the gameplay relatively exciting. What I have to criticize in the gameplay, however, is that the missions are mostly structured as follows:

If you want to explore and build in an open universe this is the game for you. If you want Metroid in space, move on. I do not intend to stretch too far, simple the game changed from a huge thumb down, to a small thumb up, through all the effort and dedication.

No Man’s Sky was a massive disappointment upon release. Leading up to its release me and my friends were bursting of excitement. We could not wait for the release but after finally having purchased the game and about a day of intensive gameplay we soon found the game getting stale and quickly realized that the game was not at all what it led up to be.

The game had and still have astonishing potential but this only led to our disappointment when we saw how poorly the game was executed.

Recent updates have improved the game immensely and certainly regained my interest. This definitely was one small step for No Man’s Sky but will still need a giant leap to regain popularity and get into a different light with the community.

In my opinion the game should focus on improving the survival aspect of the game.
I think with the recent updates implying that the developers are willing to improve and rectify their mistakes. I will encourage people to support them purchase No Man’s Sky to help get this game to its potential which is revolutionary for its genre.

Years of free updates have brought what was once probably the most disappointing and disastrous launches in the game industry to a fully realized universe sandbox experience. Sure you can laugh at them BUT in the end the vision and potential for such a project is something that should not die.

You are constantly getting stuff to do its almost overwhelming. I went to a site on my home planet (You can now build anywhere) to find buried technology only to find a crashed freighter (the size of my home town mind you) on my way. I stopped and got a salvage mission and while digging up the ships hull I feel into a cave containing "Sentient plants."

The plants gave me a giant pearl and after taking it I got into a 2 hour long chase when the sentinels (aka the NNMS police) instantly raised my wanted level for taking the pearl (it was very valuable). This was not a simple chase seen in GTA, this was a planet by planet chase which resulted in my hiding out in an unknown moon to wait out the authorities. This entire experience would not be possible in any other game.

I hated NMS at launch and I was furious with the excuses from Hello Games BUT I have to say I am impressed. They could have let it die HELL companies like EA and Actvision would have. I am so happy they didn't because NMS delivers an experience that I feel is absent in current games. The feeling of freedom and discovery.

This Review is for redeeming purposes.

No Man's Sky : NEXT is a completely reworked, refined gaming experience and offers definitely what was promised 2 Years ago. The Game is now what it should have been in the beginning - But this shouldn't stop us from forgiving Hello Games due to their hard work in the last 2 years delivering what they promised. For my part, I LOVE this Game

For my part, I LOVE this Game now. It is so much fun, has so much content, so much to do - And gives you an idea of our galaxy like no game before. You are just a small person in a galaxy so huge, you will never fully discover everything in a lifetime - And you fight for your own reasons, you follow your own goals - And still you get a nicely done story line to follow, if you so desire.

Only thing that I didn't like is hiding some features behind progress walls - but these fade pretty early in the game and you are free to go. It doesn't change anything about the fact that this game is now a true 10/10.

Vastly improved with Next, almost a completely new game. I had to re-learn the game after 15 hours of traditional gameplay. I also didn't lose my old base gear or ships. Very few and small bugs, I never crashed.

The newest update is neat, though the game's still a pain to go through since you always start on a hostile world with sentinels aka fun police shooting you for doing actions the tutorial wants you to do. You can get into crazy shenanigans later on though.

Following two years of enhancements, the game is now unrecognisable to that released in 2016. Significant new content and well considered changes to the story and game play loops make this the game promised, and a must play experience for any fans of Sci fi, spare exploration, base building or survival.

Loved the game from when it was first released and now after the NEXT update I love it even more. It's like a whole new game since this update. So many changes and improvements. Still isn't for people who want an Elite Dangerous experience, rather for those who like being alone but every now and again wouldn't mind a friend popping over.

Now, while before I said it was recommended, but not quite for everyone, not it is a much more “universal” recommended game. Some people will love it, others will find it a nice game. But its no longer a “love it or find it ultra boring” it was before.

The original game was a simplistic, wide-as-the-universe, shallow-as-a-puddle world exploring and screenshot generator. It was fun for about 30-100hours, and after some 30 hours, you’d have seen nearly all the game could offer. Fantastically beautiful vistas could be found, but were rare (was they should be) so you’d get a few jaw-dropping moments every now and then.
For instance, landed my ship on a new planet, got off the ship, and immediately a giant foot came from the sky and landed in front of me – a bipedal, t-rex style dinosaur over 7m tall was just about on top of me.

Then came the big updates. One added bases (which could be shared), and what fun that was.
Another added vehicles. While you could see some 90% of what a planet would offer in a 300 meter radius of your landing spot, vehicles were fun. Could easily do some long range farming expeditions to re-top off your stores.

Then came Atlas Rises. That improved the terrain generation massively. Suddenly, planets had a couple or a trio of biomes. Not radically different, but the visual difference between them was enough to give it a more “alive” feel. No longer the planets were uniformly covered in grass, now they would have sections with and without grass. Some sections with and without trees. It just felt “better”. Base building, farming, trading and item manufacturing got overhauld, made very complex, so you could have a lot of fun discovering just HOW to get a very profitable base going to make units to buy a freighter, or to get that awesome new exotic ship.

    And now… NEXT.
NEXT is just… amazing. Everything from the ground up has been re-designed and updated. The core cycle is the same (farm to recharge equipment, farm to get elements to create other elements to create technology to sell), but is massively improved and complex.
Planet generation has been made jaw-droppingly good. While this might sound odd, we now have CONTINENTS on the planets. This simple change means the planets are no longer uniform wherever you land. They have a “planet” feel. You can land on a small island and explore, take off and explore coastal areas, then do it again and explore more inland. True, the things you find are somewhat the same in all three places, but the terrain is radically diferent. Its amazing to just walk around and LOOK.
-You have realistic HUGE mountains (where before you had rolling terrain), valleys, proper oceans.
-Planet appearance from orbit now very closely matches what you find on the ground (originally it was a crapshoot, after Atlas Rises it was better, but still note quite).
-Space stations now “feel” lived in, and used. It looks and feels like an airport terminal (as they should).
    - You have abandoned space stations, that “feel” abandoned.
    -Ringed planets
    -Actual clouds that cast shadows

    And much, MUCH more.
While the above look like small things, added together they just add immensely to the “feel” of the game, the immersion. It just FEELS like you’re on actual, alien planets. Its just that – NEXT added the correct FEEL to the exploration game. If have this odd urge to go climb that mountain on the horizon, just because. Its enormous, it pokes out from the surrounding terrain, I want to see it. I will build a vehicle to get there, but first get mats. And this way, I use up a very enjoyable afternoon.

Of course, you still have the much-touted multiplayer, but even without that – Even if it did NOT have multiplayer, it would be awesome. With multiplayer, you can finally share the amazing things you find with someone.

The original was just a sandbox – with no direction except towards the center. Atlas patch (and then NEXT) gave the game direction. Many directions. Explore, trade, farm, build bases…

I would recommend the reviewers to judge this game based on how it has changes, and if it is still enjoyable. (Since judging the game by how it was released, does not help people decide whether to buy the game now)

No Man's Sky, better known as No Man's Lie is one of the most disappointing games of all time. Even in the year of disappointments, it stands out..... In a really bad way....

The PR division really did a number on the game, making fake promises to not only the costumers, also to investors, which is just stupid. The most fun I had out of all this, is that it really bit them in the ass!

I haven't seen any reviews post 2016 so here is my take on No Man's Sky as it is at the end of 2017. It seems just like everyone else who's written a review for No Man's Sky I got this game when it first came out and I was disappointed. It's been a long time since I last played No Man's Sky but after I updated the game I can't stop playing it. I like exploring but I also like that now there are missions available to get new blue prints. They come from the aliens who now staff my base and from the aliens on the stations. The patches have added the structure this game was missing on day one and it has made a huge difference.

I wish all of this new content would have been in the original game because I probably wouldn't have stopped playing it and the reviews might have been a little more kind. The star map is still a mess though and I hope another patch fixes it but the game is a lot better now. Also YouTube videos are a great resource for just about every question in the game. So if you haven't played No Man's Sky since if first came out you might want to fire it up again and see what's new.

Mine resources ? To bad that every planet on the universe had planetary-wide "sentinel drones" on them, that will kill everybody who dare to steal a handful of dirt...Surviving simply means to refill one of your numerous constantly dropping meters. Manually of course, even if your have enought resources in your inventory. This game uses every opportunity to artifically extend the gameplay (Yeah, we like our Inventory small and fiddly).

The best part is probably the exloration, but of course it's shallow like the rest of the game - push your scanner run to the next question marker and "discover" one of 5 or 6 generic alien things that are pretty mutch the same on every planet. This game has too many flaws big and small to name them all, I won't even start to talk about all the technical problems this game has. The 60 € price tag is just the cherry on top of the cake. I think they knew very well why they gave no review copies to the press or showed actual gameplay vids before release.

Maybe buy this in a Sale after a couple of patches for 20 bucks, because the potential is there but buried under a pile of 18 Quintillion generic planets.

Being honest, when I first launched, I had a small hiccup with graphic-settings, where for some reason it had an issue when I went to restart the game, in switching to full-screen mode. Ended up having to edit the settings file in the Steam-dir to make it borderless windowed. Was able to play the game for, according to Steam, an 11 hour stretch, without any real issues and everything was excellent, fun, interesting, explorative... this is not only the definite game I've been wanting to play for ages... but even the game I've been dreaming of for the past 20 years. When I was a teenager and used to be more into coding, I used to have ideas of games that could just render, on the fly, procedural-code and functions, to make a gigantic game without much need of mammoth-space and resources to make it work... this is more or less exactly what I would have imagined... starting in space and working down to the planet-level, rather than the other way around.

Devs are already working on updates and additions to the game, which is GINORMOUS! To give an idea of the SCALE of this game: Before buying the game, I was SO excited for it... and found myself watching some PS4 gameplay videos on YouTube... kind of had a semi-idea of places to tighten up on that I'd see other players slip on, or stuff they'd pass by... or so I kind of thought. I had noticed in the journal-screen or whatever, that a lot of planets gave a few hundred thousand units, or more, if you discovered everything on the planet. Well, the planet I started on was awesome... which again, after the above-listed tiny graphics issue I had at first and flipping through some options, I found that if you exited and restarted at the very beginning you can re-renderer everything about the planet you start on. Since I was actually squared away, launched the game, and ended up on a freezing snowing planet... yeah, having grown up most my earlier years in the snow, I was good on that, restarted... and the planet I have now is lush, it's pretty, has neon-green grass with purple-ish and orange like landscape, the creatures are neat looking, the drones are there but only attack if provoked (and sometimes go into attack mode when I mine, which is odd), and findings are plentiful.

This is where the scale comes into play, because I'm not sure if the amount of stuff per planet is semi-set or if it's procedural, but OMG, the first planet I'm on is SO HUGE with SO MUCH TO DO! As I said above, I noticed in videos that if a planet is completed there's a big pay day, and having an enjoyment of being a completionist, I thought I might start off completing the first planet or two. WOW! I can tell you now, the whole 11.5hrs listed up to this point has all been spent on THE FIRST PLANET! I have my ship repaired and ready to shoot into space... but I wanted to try to get everything on the first planet to have the few hundred thousands of credits starter-funds going into the cosmos; which I'm coming to find, with the found junk/sell-loot [like daggers and cubes and such] sold in a decent amount, can make just as many units, and perhaps for that reason, I'm feeling a nudge to move on with the game and maybe come back later, BUT... and this is the critical part...

There's SO MUCH TO FIND... this game is an EXPLORER'S DREAM come TRUE! On just the first planet I've managed to upgrade my ship to a slightly nicer upgrade (another slot, a few more pre-installed functions/weapons) that was found in "downed ship" or whatever map-marker. I've also upgraded my multi-tool TWICE, and I think it's a 12-slot now (looks like an MP5), with a bunch of cool mods, that I crafted onto it. Also learned a TON of tool mods and ship mod (+several language words)... still can't access some of the materials yet to build them... but looking forward to huge mutli-slotted tools/ships that can be loaded to the teeth (it kind of reminds me a slight bit of Kingdom Hearts and the Gummi Ship with its upgrades & such).

But seriously, after 11.5 hours, I'm STILL finding new stuff, on THE SAME STARTER PLANET! And I've barely made, in comparsion I'd imagine, a reasonable dent in the surface of the planet... when I think about how far I've traveled and what I've seen... I can't say that I can recall going in one direction, then realize coming back around the other side as in going all the way around... the planets are HUGE!!!! Which is a GREAT THING! This game is a UNIVERSE-SIMULATOR if there ever was one!!!

From what I've seen in the videos, there are space-stations, there are "space bars" it'd seem, and everything in between... for any that grew up on the classic-game-series "Space Quest" by the *original* Sierra On-Line you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to try this, and be patient with it.

Yes, it may not have fully lived up to the expectations that people had when buying it but people are missing the big picture that Hello Games made sure to accomplish before releasing the game: Exploration. Yes, there may have been a lack of actual gameplay but exploring worlds that no one but I will ever see in my lifetime is not only glorious but extremely wonderful and eye-opening. The graphics and color scheme were amazing, the small but substantive gameplay that they had were meant to strive for, and the random generated planets and galaxies were something to look forward to!!! Hello Games wanted you to get lost in each and every one of these planets and to focus less on the destination and revel every moment in the journey. A few things that they could have done to really sell the people at the initial release would have been to provide a better random-procedural algorithm for making some animals to prevent lookalikes on different planets!! Only one GPU, at that time, could technically run what they were wanting to put in... so yeah they were going to dumb it down to appeal to the mass market. I see people complaining that its boring... what do you expect about a game that is centered around single player exploration, and not combat? Its not as bad as people say, but its also not as good as people say by any long mile. Its average. If you want a single player space exploration game, with minimal combat, then this is not a bad option. The worlds are big and there is some form of mindless, and minor, satisfaction from exploring ruins and learning an alien language. I oddly never had crashes or fps issues, since day 1 of launch... I was running a dying r9 290, with 16 gigs of ddr3 and an amd fx-8350 black. Stable 49 fps. Expand

This game is not bad, also it is not fantastic. I have an enjoyable time bopping around the universe in my ship, then gathering resources and building new things. If excitement and fantastic action is what you are looking for, try another game. If you like a decently solid exploration game, give this a try.

Space Engineers steadily is becoming more and more with each update, and has been in development for some time.

Elite Dangerous is hugely immersive, finely tuned, polished, and is a great game.

In order to get a score by my scoring system, you need to have atleast 20 hours of gameplay in order to be considered a game, that gets you a 1. This game gets a 0.

Over 100 hours in this game and I can say that it's really a pleasure to explore the galaxy in this game. Visually very beautiful and with a gameplay relax, without the rush of the current games. The updates are simply being fantastic adding base building, vehicle exploration, cargo ships and the ability to visit friends' bases. For me it is a unique game in its genre. Worth every cent.

The game is an unholy mess and for 50 euros nevertheless, low frame rates and repetitive gameplay. The developers lied to the community which supported them and their behavior shouldn't be left unpunished. Honestly, you are better off with Minecraft.

    8. Fight animals, wild plants, sentinels, robots, space pirates.
    9. Different game mods and special crafting mode.
    10. Each free update adds so many features like: vehicles, buildings, crafting, resources, technologies, plants, music, animals, more content and fixes then you could imagine! This is only the beginning since this game is a project in process.

    DON'T LISTEN TO CRITICS!
Before the game was released, all the critic websites said this project was genius. Finally, when it was released, the critic websites didn't get money for commercials and advertising so they gave it a score of 6 or 7 out of 10. When will people understand that big critic and commercial websites need to make money to survive. They don't work for free. Usually, the indie studios don't have the money to pay for reviews or advertising. Do you think huge commercial websites like IGN and GameSpot will give this game a good score without getting some money? If they did, then nobody would pay them and their business will close.

A concept manipulated in a mediocre way, giving a result a videogame without heart, without entity, and with a disastrous performance.

No Man's Sky was hype. There's no hiding the fact that this game was hyped up to be a massively multiplayer, open world, incredibly detailed and insanely interactive. It didn't deliver in any of these aspects.

Over the course of the game's creation, developers promised and showed us many things that never actually saw the light of day when the game was finally released in mid 2016.

Over the course of the game's creation, developers promised and showed us many things that never actually saw the light of day when the game was finally released in mid 2016.

The ships, although cool in looks, are severely lacklustre in this game. Bigger ships do not necessarily mean more control, better weapons, etc, instead they allow for the player to carry larger amounts of materials than before. There is no feeling of progression from gaining a new ship after hours of endless grinding, rather, a feeling similar to something like "Oh hey look a new ship, that one looks cooler than my last one".

While I'm on the topic, the endless grinding? The game was hyped up to be some sought of "choose your own adventure", and from trailers and developer details, this is what we were lead to believe. Instead, you spend hours upon hours finding very specific resources, some of which aren't available in certain planetary systems simply to fly your ship, not very satisfying gameplay, especially since, from early trailers, players were lead to believe that again, you could choose how you played. We were supposed to be able to grind resources if we wanted, discover new planets if we wanted, discover life forms, learn languages and although all of this is possible, the gameplay is extremely lacking and in order to do this in the first place, large amounts of grinding time is required.

Multiplayer was another functionality that was promised by developers, and probably the biggest let down of the whole game. The grind, in my opinion, would be totally worth it if I could fly my ship to a certain solar system to find my mates, fly around with them and destroy other's ships. Unfortunately, the only interaction I will ever have with someone else is when I see details of the planets they have discovered in game.

Although this game does disappoint, credit must be given for the vast expanse of planets and that have been created and the graphic quality of the game. Looking through the universe's map certainly leaves a feeling of wonder and intrigue as to what might be out there, and the graphical quality and aesthetically pleasing aspects of the game add to this, however, from feelings of being let down from previous gameplay, those hopes are soon quashed.

Hopefully, the developers can continue to create content, similar to recent updates (bases can now be created and land ships are now a thing) that will fix some of the glaringly obvious problems that the game has. Otherwise, I doubt I'll be playing anytime soon.

Its no spoiler the center of the galaxy only restarts the game with your current ship. The other route tells that you created a new star-system, but technically there are only 64bit different planets (9,223,372,036,854,775,807) the random generator will generate a unique planet for each one and you can not add there a planet created by you. Also there is no report of planet-systems named like "created by user" so its a nice story, but nothing more in this "multiplayer/singleplayer-multigame" experience.

The base building, teleportation and renting the ship with the option to build a base in it feels shoehorned into the mechanics of the game. Most ideas are done by other indie developer like starbound and subnautika already. Also this basebuilding breaks with the mechaniks of the core game. It was not developed to be a base building game the core mechanics are not changed.

For pacing the game there are to many grinding moments for just improving the grinding it self. In other games you grind to do some thing different. Example: Starbound. With the multitool you dig to improve the tool to grab liquids from the planets. Then you will grind to place wire and paint the placed blocks. In No Man's Sky you just grind to grind more. There is no target or improvement in your game and without these shift in mechanics there is no fun after 3 to 4 hours.

No Man's Sky (NMS) succeeds in creating the environment of a explorer in the vast reaches of space. The joy of discovery, of repairing your ship to take to the stars and then to upgrade your ship to go to other worlds faster and better than before. The progression from surival to exploration to mastery of the stars.

However it fails on some basic design flaws:

    * Why does almost every trader, explorer and random alien you meet look and sound almost the same.

    * Why do you have to discover all the elements or basic designs. Any high school student can name a fair amount of the perodic table. So why can't the scanner in the game identify basic elements.

    * After your first couple of dozen worlds, you realize how much sameness the NMS has.

    * Do you really need 16 quintillion planets to explore when creating a slice of the universe with a few hundred worlds would occupy one's time for a while. And one could put more resources into creating more engaging worlds than alot that look like rehashes of the one's you have already seen.

    * Random starting points are okay, but aleast make the starting world a little more newbie friendly. The first two times I started a new game I started on a radioactive planet with little oxygen.

    * Why can't my ship scanners locate elements and plot them out for me, why must I hack relays to get the knowledge that should come from a decent onboard computer.

    * No Autopliot or Fast Travel

    * No real focus or compelling reason to get to the center of the galaxy. If you want to put that as the focus you could easily say humans just got FTL travel and you are one of many explorers to do the Star Trek thing aka Seek out and explore bold new worlds

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
